A room to discuss Web App Wednesday, a new site I am launching here: http://www.webappwednesday.com.
Every Wednesday I will launch a new web app, Occasionally interesting, often trivial, always original.
"This post will show exactly how one start-up improved their homepage conversion rate (visitor to sign-up flow) more than 20%, then 16% again, with a few simple changes and Google Website Optimizer. Once reading this, you will know more about split-testing than 90%+ of the consultants who get paid to do it… There are a few advanced concepts, but don’t be intimidated; just use what you can and ignore the rest. —"

webmaven: Dear lazyweb, please suggest some complimentary hyphenated adjectives for my next !waw app. Examples: 'big-hearted', 'open-minded'. - http://identi.ca/notice...
webmaven: @metajack Essentially. Insultr strings together a random prefix ('Thou art a/an'), two adjectives , and a noun. !waw - http://identi.ca/notice...
webmaven: Those of you looking for this week's Web App Wednesday will have to wait until later this evening. Sorry folks. !waw - http://identi.ca/notice...
Good Morning Folks. Today's release is pretty simple, it just displays the current northern hemisphere astronomical season, as defined by the solstices and equinoxes.
- Michael R. Bernstein
The site should be self-updating for the next couple of years. ;-)

Michael, I've just tried to download source with wget, and I got this: Cannot write to `whatseason.tar.gz?attredirects=0&auth=ANoY7coFBOK9D67P5JFcTwZ78V8rQxXbmVDrax_86gXgve6Q3hbWAtX68kI4xbW6aeMjPP9NZtlFN2eRvzXIOZLB4lk1vujPEN-8anFHYYZ8iKI_2UXm64i6qOIwMFkIfOQezypRCFxIwzYCnK3j3SezgI16lnCKxpDXyJAxdDR2keCzDia7uzo02ItYMDjrQkbAPjhBJjUg==' (File name too long). Firefox saved it anyway.
- Onur Gündüz
Yes, that's the same address. I can't download the file with any downloader, only browsers work. Maybe it's a cookie issue?
- Onur Gündüz
Hmm. Maybe. I guess I shouldn't be using Google Sites to host the tarballs.
- Michael R. Bernstein
It might be a while before I get the files (for all apps) hosted elsewhere. I hope this isn't a showstopper for you.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Meanwhile, what do you think of the app (or of any of the others)?
- Michael R. Bernstein
oh wget isn't working, but I don't think it's a big issue anyway. I downloaded the file, had a look at it :) I only saw that one and Benjamin's blog yet, just found the site. The idea is great, I mean web app wednesday. whatseason is yes, it's pretty simple, clean :)
- Onur Gündüz
benjamingolub.com Oh I thought it was part of web app wednesday :) I thought we are all releasing an app on Wednesdays, I was thinking of some idea just now :(( so are you the only one releasing? :)
- Onur Gündüz
As the name suggests, in the future I will expand the 'analysis' beyond shittiness, to which languages are the most fucked, crappy, and so on. Suggestions are welcome. ;-)
- Michael R. Bernstein
It is a language popularity variant of the previous License Info site.

webmaven: OK, I have next Web App Wednesday's app already done. Yay, me! !waw Now I'll have some time to clean up some of the existing code. - http://identi.ca/notice...
This week's application is pretty simple: You can create a page at a random URL. Everyone editing the page can see each others' changes in realtime.
- Michael R. Bernstein
OK folks, I ran into some difficulties with this week's app, so the functionality has been pared down quite a bit in order to make the Wednesday release. Nevertheless, it is now ready. Check it out!
- Michael R. Bernstein
*bump* OK, I got some sleep, and have fixed a minor bug that caused an error if any book does not have a thumbnail. So now we can see what books Bret has 'liked': http://friendshelf.appspot.com/bret
- Michael R. Bernstein
the feature that would make it immediately useful is (for me of course) a link back to the FF entry to like or comment on it + a way to see books by my network or even everyone (one can dream). It also seems like it misses books, but depends on your filtering I guess
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hmm. Joelle, the FF entry (for the same book) in each case might be different. Is that a problem?
- Michael R. Bernstein
well i am looking at filtered view of a particular's person feed, so getting their entry is what i'd expect, don't care too much which one if they entered the same book multiple times. I think. Hmm - I just found out that there is the "service:" search option in FF's search box, but you can't seem to combine multiple ones. Bummer, I thought I would try "service:librarything , service:amazon, service:goodreads" (comma means "or") but it didnt do it
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Ah, but it won't be *their* entry, it will be someone else's entry that they liked or commented on. Still what you want?
- Michael R. Bernstein
I concur on the 'bummer'. Right now only liked or commented-on Amazon items are being incorporated, but I'll be folding in additional queries for Goodreads and LibraryThing before much longer.
- Michael R. Bernstein
ah yes, i see what you mean with the link. It's probably just a me thing, always wanting to jump in conversations to volunteer my made-up-as-i-go opinion ;)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
No problem, I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. Thanks for the feedback!
- Michael R. Bernstein
webmaven: @metajack Good point on the empty FriendShelf result page. I'll add something better there. thanks for the feedback. !waw #webappwednesday - http://identi.ca/notice...
