Don't miss this. Very cool 3D and nice collaborative environment. Looks like Second Life done right. Oh, and check out @garyvee giving his own interview. Heh, that's what the speaker room at LeWeb was like.
- Robert Scoble
This is insane! Amazing how capable browsers these days are becoming. building applications and services for the browser is inherently solving the cross platform problem (for the most part)
- Bhavishya Kanjhan
Thanks for posting the interview, it was even more awesome in real life :)
- Shaun
@Veselka you probably saw the "space designer" demo which is more like a proof of concept. Our main service so far is the Paradise Paintball (see www.cmune.com to access it & see more demos) that is in the browser, in Facebook and in Apple Widgets (we have been the #1 widget on Apple.com for a month now). As for the difference with Lively (r.i.p.) you can check this post: http://www.plus8star.com/...
- Benjamin Joffe
you've been there a week, you'd think you'd speak fluently by now...jeez...
- Zee.
If you can't understand it then...ok, nevermind!
- WorldofHiglet
Looks like someone should've invested some time with Rosetta Stone.
- Akiva Moskovitz
any cool tech company addressing the language issue? seems like a huge opportunity to make this country and whats happening more accessible
- simonpure
xiha btw, is a very cool cross-alphabet, polyglot social network
- anna sauce
of course, now that you just called attention to it, somebody in the govt is probably looking into it :-)
- Mark Schulz
Mark: nah. If they wanted to block me they would have done that five days ago. :-) The great firewall is VERY efficient. They have tons of people looking through everything.
- Robert Scoble
Sometimes I'll block your Twitter and FriendFeed while I'm eating Chinese food. Just for the hell of it.
- Kevin Leroux
they block your blog but let you in the country...
- anna sauce
anna: I think they are investors in Twitter. :-)
- Robert Scoble
mhmazidi: can you add my account to Google Reader? That seems to work here.
- Robert Scoble
yes. i follow your activity all around the web. your blog is in my greader for long time. not bad for me. bad for other persian reader... sorry for bad writing english
- mhmazidi
The great firewall has enough holes to get in or out... This may be a bit too simplistic, but how about just using HotspotShield?
- Michael Leuker
from fftogo
mhmazidi: that's cool, though. Love it that Google Reader pokes through government censorship. I wonder how long it'll be before FriendFeed and Google Reader both are blocked?
- Robert Scoble
in some of region of iran, HTTPS is blocked. thus log in with FF is hard for us :(
- mhmazidi
How does that work, even if you have the same option, your blog is blocked but the content lives on very intieresting.
- Ray Marr aka Knatchwa
the filtering method in our countery , iran, is a little different. the filtering committee members will search some keywords, if you have that keywords on your blog, your blog will be filtered. if your post is not about policy , there is a chance that they unblock your blog after you accept to remove some of your posts but if you write about politics , you will be in danger because they can arrest you.
- امیرعباس
Little Savage: hopefully one day all people will have the freedom I have. Someday I hope to visit your country and shake your hand without you worrying about what the government might think.
- Robert Scoble
Farbod: I can't even imagine what it's like to live there. I wish you well.
- Robert Scoble
Farbod: I know. Maryam and my son are going to Iran in March (while I go to SXSW in Austin, Texas). You should meet up with her.
- Robert Scoble
@robert - acctualy our condition is not as bad as you think. we have every thnig that we need. but the problem is that our country is a third world country but our expectation from life is like people that are living in first world counteries :) we are trying to change the condition and i'm sure that we can. by the way i'm very happy that you have planned to come here. iran is a beautiful country ;)
- امیرعباس
Farbod and Shine: hey, I know about "unsightly patch." We had George Bush here for eight years. Yeah, Maryam is coming to Iran. You should send her email at g_maryam@hotmail.com and plan a meetup with her and Milan.
- Robert Scoble
Little Savage: I won't be able to make it on this trip in March, but Maryam and Milan will. Look forward to hearing all about it.
- Robert Scoble
Don't tempt us to make a gag about wanting to move to China, Robert. ;-)
- David Petherick
from twhirl
David: I'm not moving to China. I like California more.
- Robert Scoble
Interesting, my blog is fine and all the sites that I usually go to, have been no problem to access.
- Alvin
Would like to try them but I have to say I would be apprehensive. Having said that I do enjoys porkscratchings so I guess I have weird enough tastes to like them.
- Rob Brammeld
Let's go to Thailand together some time Robert - I'll get you some fried grasshoppers there ;-)
- Jesse Stay
oh, man, I love braised chicken feet. To be honest, I love practically anything braised.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
nimen hao! I wish I was in China eating some amazing food :(
- anna sauce
when i had chicken feet in china, i had no idea what it was at first. this is what happens when you order from dim sum carts by pointing at things at random. they were delicious, though :-D
- Karim
Not enough meat on them feet for my liking. It's like gnawing on rubber. lol
- Victor
lobster, crab, chicken feet all fall into my category of Tasty but too much work for too little gain... After all, I don't don't have to butcher my steak myself to enjoy it!
- David HC Soul
Cool demo of a touch screen in a taxi in Shanghai, China. This company has revenues of hundreds of millions of dollars. The VC is one of the most famous in China. Gary Rieschel of qimingventures.com. Gary was the founder of SOFTBANK Venture Capital/Mobius Venture Capital in the U.S. (1996), a firm with over $2 billion USD under management, and served on Softbank’s Global Board of Directors.
- Robert Scoble
17% of recent Christina Aguilera concert tickets were sold through this system, which shows how good it is. Competes with several other taxi systems, but shows much more interactivity than other systems.
- Robert Scoble
The thing that gets me about this video is not the tech but how clean the and nice the cabs look. They get cleaned every 3 days? I wonder the last time a cab was cleaned in Boston. America really needs to step up. Also the tech is pretty cool. I hate advertising but I would be suckered into playing with it :)
- Nelson de Witt
from twhirl
Photos or a short video of the market would be nice if possible, hint, hint!
- Roney Smith
Scott: about $200 before negotiating. I have some photos, but will post them later tonight.
- Robert Scoble
Look forward to seeing them. You know anyone who has tried one.
- Scott Overpeck
Scott: I don't. Everyone has real iPhones that I've met with, but then I'm hanging out with geeks.
- Robert Scoble
Definitely bring some back. Need a shipping address?
- Ralph Riccardi
Dealextreme has knockoff iPhones all the time. Not sure if they're dual SIM but my memory is they fetch about $120ish plus a few dollars shipping (which is super fast). I can't vouch for whether they actually work. I think the $199 price for an 8GB iPhone takes a lot of the wind out of the sales of the these fakes.
- Wayne Schulz
WOW - What a concept!! "and have replaceable batteries”
- JimmyJet
Replaceable batteries might have saved my co-worker, who dropped her phone into water. Sadly, I don't think there's a way to quickly kill all power to an iPhone, if you can't remove the battery.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Photos will be nice! I wonder if the knock offs function as well as the real thing, the battery idea is very cool though.
- MedicalQuack
Have fun in Shanghai robert. Try to take time for an evening visit @ "JC Club" in Fuxing Xi Lu / Wulumuqin Lu - great little jazz-place. Today Sunday is nice - w CoCo a local star. Show starts around 10pm.
- Niels Peter
Julio: I haven't seen any Android knockoffs yet. In the black market everyone comes up to you and says "handbag? watch? iPhone?"
- Robert Scoble
Android is open source. There's no such thing as an Android knockoff.
- scott anderson
PLEEASE show us some pics or videos of the iphone knockoffs
- natadd
natadd: I will post those later tonight. Still have tons of meetings today.
- Robert Scoble
No knockoffs of the Android software - but were these running the genuine iPhone OS? If so, you could get the same with Android: knockoff hardware, say copying the T-Mobile one, but running genuine Android.
- James
On the android thing, iirc there is already work being done getting android up and running on the neo freerunner. That is the latest openmoko phone, btw ;)
- turn.self.off
It might be fun to get Android running on the knockoff iPhones.
- scott anderson
I was just reading Louis Gray's post about being a real friend to your social networking friends. Robert Scales, Raincity Studios' CEO gave me keys to his house.
Even better, he's not even here. I barely know Scales. How many would give me keys to their house without getting to know me better?
- Robert Scoble
That is a good friend! :) But out of the thousands you interact with Robert - how do you define friend?
- Lucretia Pruitt
Lucretia: anyone who gives me keys to their house is definitely a friend. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'd be happy with just the whiskey :D
- Will Higgins™
I used to go out swing dancing quite a bit. 6-7 days/week. Especially back when I lived in Chicago. The dance community is a lot like what Louis described in his post and what you're experiencing with Robert Scales and his house, Robert. I've stayed in many strangers' homes and they are now counted in my bajigglion friends' lists. :-)
- Lisa L. Seifert
And now that I think about it, the dance community is one reason I moved to the Bay Area. I knew that even if I only personally knew 1 or 2 dancers, I actually had a ready-made community to rely on during a move since we all had dance as that common ground.
- Lisa L. Seifert
Robert, I would do you a favor and refuse you entry; my place is a dump of a hovel!
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Yeah, Christine and friends have really planned out a great day. Hopefully we'll be able to do some live video.
- Robert Scoble
Looking forward to seeing more videos from China. I just watched your Seagate drive manufacturing video. Very interesting.
- Jeff P. Henderson
christine is hungry so as soon as christine finishes getting ready christine will come get you and take you to check out the old part of shanghai with the tea house and we'll have lunch there. it's fun having you guys in shanghai.
- Christine Lu
Can anyone guess how many hard drives they make every week? It's an astounding number. They told us that we were first US bloggers to tour the fab where they make 2.5-inch drives for laptops and automobiles.
- Robert Scoble
over 18 per second!? Wow, now i do want to see that footage :)
- Simon Wicks
Simon: well, let's say they make more than a million a week. Divide that by the number of seconds in a week. Let's just say they make a LOT of drives. More than 10,000 people work at this plant, too.
- Robert Scoble
can i get that in writing? :) Just joshin' chief
- Zee.
@Zee: This means one more checkmark for your life goals ;)
- Jemm
hey welcome back to the online world - how was the trip?
- Web2Asia
genieyclo: this factory doesn't, but Seagate is working on flash-related storage devices, or at minimum, ones that combine flash with hard drive storage.
- Robert Scoble
George: we'll be on this trip until the 18th. So far it's going very well. Got a lot more video that I expected already. Seagate gave us complete access to its fab, which was really over the top.
- Robert Scoble
Is that the same amount of storage produced per week, or do they change it up depending on sales everywhere? I'm still finding it hard to come to terms with just how many drives that is. Amazed.
- Simon Wicks
Simon: they adjust the lines to respond to customer demand. So, yes, that can go up and down. It is totally amazing. I saw thousands of drives be built today. How many petabytes? I have no idea, but many of the drives were 500 gigabyte models.
- Robert Scoble
