Given the wide variety of hardware out there from a zillion manufacturers, including knockoffs and rebrands, Windows actually does a pretty good job. What we need is for just one hardware manufacturer to develop a platform driven by their tight grip on the hardware and the OS that runs on it... hmmmm.

I like to use Belarc Advisor ( http://www.belarc.com/free_do...). It's got my butt out of a jam many times. It's lite, fast, and easy to use.
