[[The JIDF (www.thejidf.org) describes itself as a "collective of activists and a non-violent protest group with over 5,000 members and supporters, which seeks in its own way to counter anti-Semitic content [that] promotes terrorism online in places including (but not limited to) Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia, Google Earth." Apart from its Facebook operations, which the JIDF calls only a small percentage of its activities, the group publishes online "guides" detailing how users can identify sites that promote hateful content. JIDF members also edit content on Wikipedia entries and monitor YouTube and Google Earth.]] This is the only piece where Wikipedia is mentioned and only in the margin. Do you have some proof of "hateful content" whatever this may be for {Allah|God|YHWH}'s sake? Even if you can point this why not just change it. It's the most open application there is on the planet...

perhaps theJIDF will answer that himself. he is here on friendfeed http://friendfeed.com/jidf but when you are talking about social science a person who asks for proof is usually looking for loopholes. of course you can't prove bigotry. to charge such vile behavior is an appeal to an administrator for discretion. in the end it is a judgment call based on precedent. to accuse those who...

On WP, it's more about correcting anti-Israel bias. However, the article about the JIDF was attacked with swastikas and flags of jihad, and we fully got to the root of it. It's all documented on the JIDF website.
- JIDF
Great you found who vandalized the JIDF article. Best thing to do is get it protected if you hav not done so yet. Problem is all controversial articles need to be protected making WP less open...

I also understand that there is a number of non-religious leftist Jews who have unfortunately been brainwashed to some extent to believe many of the lies with regard to the "fascist zionist policies" of the state of Israel. Chomsky and Finklestein are, in fact, antisemites. Finklestein also questions the Holocaust, so I personally do not believe his "1/3 of Jewish college students" - and Ha'aretz too leans very much to the left, so they will exaggerate the numbers so as to make it look like there aren't many solid Jewish supporters of Israel's policies.
- NoahDavidSimon
While I agree that most Jews are liberal, I do feel that the vast majority of Jews generally agree with basic Zionist principles (ie. that Israel is the home of the Jewish people.) The bottom line is that while you and I might have an idea of what "a significant number" - this "NonZionist" guy will turn to only the names you mentioned (if he even knows them): NK, Satmar, and the...

Please consider the difference between these two versions of the JIDF article to see how slight alterations can change the entire meaning of something in a completely non-neutral, biased, and inaccurate way. Lise Broer as a Wikipedian are you justifying the firing of the man because he violated Wikipedia policy?
- Igor The Troll
From the page: "IBS says a "junior-level employee" changed the Wikipedia entry to reflect Russert's death because he or she thought it was common knowledge. When NBC discovered the entry--and freaked out about it--someone else at IBS deleted the date of Russert's death and changed all of the verb tenses back. And then IBS took care of the employee."
- Igor The Troll
How did NBC find out who the IBS employee was? Was he editing under his real name or as anonymous editor? Durova you or another Wikipedian please address these questions.
- Igor The Troll
I think it would help to invite more Wikipedians here if we going to address the Wikipedian community and get the Social Media community interested in our discussions.
- Igor The Troll
What is Wikipedia and what we as Wikipedians are trying to achieve is not a simple answer. To address this question will require more input from other Wikipedians and from the general public. First thing and foremost we must foster better communicating among all sides; hence, the creation of this room.
- Igor The Troll
I see David just came here to caress his ego. Every question I raise to him or comment I make towards him he ignores. I never met David and I got involved in this because Durova asked me for help. But David called me a "bore" and a "Troll". Now David is following the famous adage, "Do not feed the Troll." So he resigned that I am a Troll even though he does not know one shit about me or what I do. Yes David, you invite negativity upon yourself. I do not condone it, or do I wish to "Stalk" you as you refer it. But I think someone or some individuals are pocking fun at you in a malice way.
- Igor The Troll
Here is a handkerchief, cry a bit. If you have a real stalking problem go see the police. Stop drawing attention to your ego.
- Igor The Troll
Could someone help me understand something? Why is there so much harassment, stalkers, blocking of editors, and other things happening on Wikipedia? I think somewhere Igor asked why there weren't more people here from Wikipedia, I mean maybe I don't belong here, but I joined to find out more about this, and really don't understand why so much is happening there. I mean I don't have an account with Wikipedia, and haven't made one since all I hear is bad stuff about it. However, I do use it. I just wish someone could make me understand what the hell is going on there with people??

@Skye B: I think the reasons are 1) anyone can edit the encyclopedia; 2) it is very influential; 3) its accessibility and influence create a feeling of power over information (on a topic, person, place, etc.); 4) people take these things very seriously.
- David Shankbone
Oh David, I am taking it seriously. As a social Media professional, I am dead serious.
- Igor The Troll
David - your article truly saddened me. I'm totally transparent online and don't think much about what could happen in the event someone decided I was a target. Hang in there!
- Douglas Karr
I am just wondering why so much negativity towards Wikipedia on the Internet. Everywhere you look you see different people posting negative comments about Wikipedia. Could this incidents invite stalking on editors who have done nothing wrong? How can Wikipedia fix itself to help their editors and the Internet Global Village?
- Igor The Troll
@Doug - thanks man. Stalking is not uncommon, and you should be careful, especially if you stand out for anything. Political views, things you do, etc. I know two very high profile people who talked to me about their real life stalkers - mine thankfully never translated into that. He just made contributing to Wikipedia a joyless task. That, and the schizophrenic response from the community. Hang in there yourself, Doug. Don't let fear make decisions for you; that's why I wrote the article.
- David Shankbone
Let's start with generally. We can always start a new thread about specifics if there is a need for it.
- Igor The Troll
I've edited for a long time and I've said "no" to some people who didn't want to take no for an answer.
- Lise Broer
Durova, I think it is a bit more than what you saying. Some of it comes from miscommunication. Another part comes from Power games. Another part comes on the part of the new editors lacking knowledge when joining Wikipedia. When you first join and try to create an article, it gets CSD - speedy - in most cases. That sticks on your recored and follows you around, even getting COI against you at a latter time. So from the get go a new editor harvests negativity to other editors.
- Igor The Troll
Well, of course there's more to it than the short answer implies. Most of the time the site is pretty good about cutting new editors slack when it comes to creating a first article that gets speedily deleted (I rarely speedy new articles, by the way). The vast majority of the people who have that experience adjust and learn, but a few take that situation or something like it as a personal affront, and a certain percentage of the time they just refuse to accept feedback.
- Lise Broer
Durova, you keep saying "they"! How about "the they editors on Wikipedia that intimidate new users". Can a few of them come to this room? There a few Wikipedian editors who keep spreading false rumors about me on Social Media networks just because "they intimidators" did not agree with some of my edits! I tried talking and being friendly to them off Wikipedia but they call me a Troll.
- Igor The Troll
So you see the bullying and the stalking is a two headed snake. While you can claim someone bullying and stalking you someone can claim that about you. I am not saying you have bullied someone, but can you say that for all Wikipedian editors? They may think they have done nothing wrong but the receiver may disagree!
- Igor The Troll
Let's be very clear about how we use the word stalking. It's a serious crime and shouldn't be bandied about lightly or cheapened. What David Shankbone faced were long term violent threats by someone who took great pains to learn his whereabouts and habits.
- Lise Broer
I think it is very easy to Stalk someone on and off the internet! With all the surveillance tools and networks aggregation tools out there it makes it a child play for a committed individual. I personally think they just wanted to intimidate him a bit, and nothing serious. Listen if someone really wants to do something they can easily do it to any Wikipedian anonymous or not. When I was fighting a vandal, an edit was purged out of the database. So how safe are any of us, you tell me?
- Igor The Troll
WHY is she being targeted with criticism, I don't understand this??
- Skye B.
Are all these people wrong about Wikipedia or is there a real problem?
- Igor The Troll
Heh, that's an old story from last fall. Factually wrong, too.
- Lise Broer
Durova, II was not talking about the story and what clandestine mailing list Wikipedia runs or does not run. I am talking about the negative perception of Wikipedia by StumbleUpon users. Are they all wrong?
- Igor The Troll

Noah while I am interested in you personal relationships, what do they have to do with Wikipedia? Maybe you should post the same picture in http://friendfeed.com/rooms... and we can talk abut them there. I think in this room we are all concerned with Wikipedia and its impact on society.

I am guessing you want to know if Wikipedia is censored? While Wikipedia is not censored, images outside the relative articles may be inappropriate, which has been determined by community consensus. But it is more case by case and how much attention is brought to an image by another editor or by a user of Wikipedia.

But for the last 2-3 years Britannica has been very hostile toward Wikipedia. It's probably been hurting their bottom line.
- Lise Broer
Can there be room for both? Can we both learn from each other?
- Igor The Troll
As far as Wikipedia is concerned, no problem. From Britannica's side the challenge is how to survive in a competitive arena where tens of thousands of people contribute to the other guy for free.
