Why Dominos video response at http://www.youtube.com/watch... is going to be textbook:
Why Dominos video response at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l6AJ49xNSQ is going to be textbook:
Play
1. They did it in video. THAT is the way to respond. Not text. Video says MUCH MORE than text can. - Robert Scoble
2. They went overboard with the response. They closed down the store and "sanitized it." - Robert Scoble
3. The CEO did it and repeated that nothing is more important that our trust. He demonstrated he understood the issue. - Robert Scoble
4. He thanked influencers for helping Dominos understand the issue and making sure that others knew about it. - Robert Scoble
5. He responded while the issue is still "hot." - Robert Scoble
6. He responded on YouTube, which is where the crisis started, not on their own video platform. - Robert Scoble
7. He communicated that there was "immediate" action including arrest warrants, and people getting fired. - Robert Scoble
Impressive. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
He didn't look straight into the camera, however - as pointed out by Steve Garfield. - l0ckergn0me
8. He knows that the real problem is that they hired idiots and are "reexamining" all hiring practices. THAT is the best way to make sure you get a good brand. - Robert Scoble
9. He used personal language "it sickens me." Not marketing speak. - Robert Scoble
Interesting mix of being apologetic and totally pissed at the same time. Overall thumbs up from me. - Mike Doeff
10. He is working to "regain our trust." - Robert Scoble
Is there anything else he could have done to answer this crisis? - Robert Scoble
He didn't offer us a coupon to make us feel better. I didn't feel condescended to. - Kevin Fox
Good lead, Robert. Glad to see discussion around the response. - Valeria Maltoni
Now if he could just work on making the pizza not taste so bad. - Dave Roth
now is the best time to go to Domino's in Conover. clean as a whistle. - nesman89
Fantastic job, I thought. - Matthew Freeman
Ok, so how bout some back ground? - Matthew DeVries
I don't mind that he didn't look straight into the camera. That shows he isn't "slick" or "overcoached." - Robert Scoble
Yes, it would have been better if he had looked into the camera, but given that a teleprompter is an expensive item, and rigging a two-way mirror with a magnified view of a printed script is a hassle... I think the minor shortfall can be forgiven. All seven of Robert's points remain absolutely valid. - David Muir
Matthew: Here's the background: http://beta.friendfeed.com/thomash... - Robert Scoble
Textbook is the best way to go. Swift and done. Now in time, people will forget, crave cheap, fast, and delivered food, and it's over. - Mike Lewis
Very well handled. I agree with you, Robert, this will make its way into textbooks alongside Tylenol's response to the poisoning crisis three decades ago. - Stephen Mack
Matthew: I already posted a link to the background. http://beta.friendfeed.com/thomash... - Robert Scoble
Or here if you wanna go straight to the source: http://consumerist.com/5210648... - Stephen Mack
They just taught a lot of clueless PR people how to handle a crisis like this. Well done. - Inside Alaska
I think theyve been handling this like pros from the getgo. Good job - Rasmus Lauridsen
Pretty slick. Many can learn from it. - Katie Dob
The woman is also a registered sex offender apparently: http://ncfindoffender.com/details... - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
so far this year, that's, what, rats in the peanuts, perchlorate in the babby formula, prescription drugs in the drinking water, snot in the pizza... what was safe to ingest again? - Karim
Bravo, Dominos. Nicely done. Speak up or be spoken for. - kevin j higgins
But he's using a teleprompter. He's evil. - teh Dork Knight aka Kenny
tehKenny: I don't think he was. I bet that he was looking at some notes, though. It didn't come across like he was reading. For someone not experienced with a teleprompter you can not use one and not come across like you're reading. - Robert Scoble
Their response was appropriate and in a timely manner which is key now. - Christi
Anyone who has ever used a teleprompter realizes how hard it is to use one and how hard it is to look natural doing it. I bet he had someone off to the side of the camera he was talking to who was holding notes up to remind him what to talk. - Robert Scoble
I wasn't there, obviously, but watching the CEO look off-camera yet speak as if to a person made me think he was looking at a person to stay "real" and "personable" and not canned or offering a performance. - Bloom Seed
It's just pizza - Ari Braginsky
Carmen: "W" had a LOT of media training and a team of people to tell him how to do it. I doubt this CEO has had much media training. - Robert Scoble
rewatching it makes it clear that he's reading notes (his focus starts at top, moves down as recording proceeds). Still, though, comes across as a real person. Not everything needs professional actors, producers, makeup, sets...imperfect may be the new perfect, as far as communicating genuineness. - Bloom Seed
Comes across as very heart-felt, and almost makes me want to order with them (I'm not sure we have them here in this town)! Shouldn't they have added something like "We'll now be installing cams in all our kitchens streaming direct to Ustream, making us the ONLY food delivery you can trust to not mess your food"? :) - Philipp Lenssen
Philipp: well, that would certainly be cool but would be way beyond something they could deliver on in two days. - Robert Scoble
I mean, I'm not a big fan of Dominos, but this helps them establish themselves as giving a crap. Good PR move. - Mike Nayyar
Great video response straight from the company president. As for watching food getting prepared, the Papa John's locations that I've been to are open and you can basically see them making your pie. Not sure if Domino's has stores like that... - Doug
Carmen, it's the "polished" vs "timely" tug of war: http://fftogo.com/e... - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
solid performance-- came across naturally and believable, blend of professionalism and good ole fashion ass-kicking anger. It was smooth but not overly slick; no suit or tie and shot in store surrounding. Content was solid too, assuring customers everything that could be done was being done. One minor tweak: he doesn't appear to be looking directly at the camera. - mark ivey
I wonder if they thought about making it a response to "that video" on youtube to get the eyeballs needed to make this count.. - Tom Masiero
Ari - it's more than "just pizza" - it's the livelihood of 125k employees. We are focused here on a textbook response, but this is also a clear demonstration of the power of leverage that SM holds: two idiots can do major damage to the brand, the company, and by ultimately to the employees. Hat's off to Mr. Doyle and his advisers. - Bill Sanders
good response for sure, way to go - sean percival
Rewatched it and yes he is reading it. Regardless, I think it was handled pretty appropriately. - Jay Neff
good job. small nit: next time they need to move the teleprompter (or cue cards) either over or under the camera. - MikeAmundsen
Video is good if Good Messenger (which Domino's guy IS) But also put the incident on my radar screen, which hitherto I was unaware of. - JimmyJet
Wasn't aware of the incident but sure feel bad for the independent operator.. - MiaD
The woman in the Wendy's chili fraud case ended up sentenced to 9 years in prison and her husband (who bought the finger off a co-worker who lost it in an industrial accident) got 12 years. http://www.bluemaumau.org/wendys_... - Kevin Fox
I wish that he was looking at the camera instead of a telepromter. Just sayin. - Andrew Baron
Andrew: he's not looking at a teleprompter. I bet someone is holding a notepad with an outline on it for him. - Robert Scoble
I haven't had Domino's in a long time. But, I'm happy to see that they put up this Video response to the malicious destruction of their Brand and business practices. - rob friedman
good job. that was a classy way to 'avoid the noid.' - grant fox
Hey Robert, can I use some of your reasons in a blog post in writing up about the Domino's issue? - Kenneth
Kenneth: yes, feel free! - Robert Scoble
Thanks Robert! - Kenneth
"Everyone else is doing it right." Yeah, right. [What are the odds of that?] - Craig Brownell
I kept hoping he'd actually look into the camera. - James Miao
I agree with James. I was hoping that he would look at the camera like he's talking to his customers. I get that he needs to make sure he says exactly what needs to to said, but the way he kept looking away from the camera made it seem a little "stiff". - Kenneth
like when dirk diggler looked into the camera during his documentary. that was powerful stuff. - grant fox
Kenneth: that's a mistake someone who isn't media trained makes. I actually don't mind that because it makes it less slick. - Robert Scoble
My guess is that they're multiple cameras and he's looking at the expensive one - Bwana ☠
Robert: Really? If corporate heads are on camera, they should NOT look at the camera especially if they're not being interviewed? It looks natural not to look at the camera? You're definitely right...I'm not media trained. :) Looks like he was reading off of a script and didn't notice a camera at him. - Kenneth
Who was he talking to? The sound guy holding the microphone to the right of the camera? - Diego Barros 
Kenneth: the only time you should look at the camera is when you want to speak directly to the viewer. You are right that he should have been speaking directly into the camera. Knowing where to look is part of media training. A good PR team could have helped (IE, one that had worked a lot with video before) but I can't really blame him. I still have trouble figuring this out. When I was on the BBC it was very difficult to look into the camera (it was aplate on the wall). - Robert Scoble
i just have to say, that by him not looking in the camera, or really doing any of this before it seems adds to his character that he's a regular guy, not some PR trained monkey doing a dance for us. - rob friedman
I dunno, I think it's more important that the response seem unrehearsed. I'll bet he did it in one take. - Ken Morley
Well done Robert: not a surprise to see this crew recognizes excellence when they see it. Dominos did virtually everything right on this aspect of its response. having seen a few crises, this example is among the best. blogged it here: http://www.mediadeluge.com/post... - Christian Anderson
Just to let folks know: the teleprompters I am familiar with allow the newscaster or talking head to look directly at the camera AND read the script. The result is like a HUD (heads-up display) for those familiar with video games or jet fighters. - David Muir
Right David, but there are all kinds of "teleprompters" some low tech and some higher tech. the point is he was reading. It was okay, he did a great job in one take. It would have been better if he hadnt read it and looked directly at the camera, but because everything else was so well done, the reading gets a pass - Christian Anderson
Not a fan of their pies, but kudos to Dominoes for the forthright reply and apology for the miscreants who brought this upon them. Hope they rebound well from this. - JA Castillo
Definitely a canned response but still heartfelt and sincere. Plus we learned its a federal felony to stuff cheese up your nose on camera. Imagine what happens at McDonalds on a daily basis - now that's frightening. - Chris Sparno
Very lucky that they had a CEO that even was willing to talk for YouTube in the moment; let's not now criticize him for his media training, or none will ever have the guts to do it again. - Francine Hardaway
Rich: This is deadly serious for him. He's right to take it seriously and I'm sure he genuinely does. - Michael Krigsman
So the real question is, who feels comfortable enough to order Domino's this weekend? - Chris Bartow
I do Chris, even more-so now than before. This weekend will be the cleanest in the franchise's history :) - Bwana ☠
@Karim: "snot in the pizza... what was safe to ingest again?" Years ago, I ordered a pizza (not from Domino's) and was surprised to see a piece of broken glass in it — and this particular glass shard had part of the pizza company logo on it! When I phoned them about it, they replaced the pizza in record time; of course, they asked for the broken glass back, too, so I couldn't keep the evidence. - Victor Panlilio
Victor *shudder* i think i would have just given up eating pizza after that :-D - Karim
The comments on You Tube are negative I don't agree with them, what is your opinion abut them? (They say Doyle is not sincere) - Maurizio Goetz
Rule #0 - Youtube comments have the value of a single molecule of feces - Bwana ☠
+1 Bwana!! - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
His response was right on and pretty smart for doing it via a video. It's sad but we are at the mercy of people that prepare our food. :-( I kind of feel bad for the kids because what they did shows a complete lack of intelligence. It would be nice if they took responsible and apologized in some sort of public forum. - John McCullough
@John McCullough "we are at the mercy of people that prepare our food" and people who pilot the planes we fly in, treat our municipal drinking water, etc. I daresay we only appreciate them when things go horribly wrong. - Victor Panlilio
@Chris White "The founder of Domino's supports Right to LIfe and Operation Rescue, which IMO, is worse than putting farts on sandwiches" Really? Watch the video at http://www.abortionno.org/ and see if you can stomach the idea that we dispose of unwanted human beings so cavalierly. - Victor Panlilio
Victor, your comment as well as John's above you, reminds me of that line in Fight Club: "We do your laundry, cook your food and serve you dinner. We guard you while you sleep. We drive your ambulances..." - Aaron Kurtz
@Aaron - almost everything we take for granted in "civilized society" depends on the everyday goodwill (and conscientiousness) of anonymous others. I've always thought that we need to become more mindful of the benefits we daily receive from these enablers of our well-being. Count your blessings, etc. - Victor Panlilio
Victor, I couldn't agree more. - Aaron Kurtz
Bret Taylor
You now get FriendFeed direct messages (and replies to direct messages) via email. You can also comment simply by replying via email.
Picture 3.png
This is the first of a handful of direct message and email enhancements we have lined up - feedback is appreciated! - Bret Taylor
woott - Tyler (Chacha)
Great job, Tudor! (Tudor did all the hard work on this one: http://beta.friendfeed.com/tudor) - Bret Taylor
nice work! - Cee Bee
I love u guys :D - Johnny Worthington
So.. how? - Rochelle
Rochelle: if someone sends you a direct message (http://beta.friendfeed.com/filter...) or replies to a direct message you send, you will get an email, and you can reply by email as well. - Bret Taylor
Nice! - AJ Kohn
Bret, so there's no option to turn it off? - Rochelle
Rochelle: there is an unsubscribe link on every email, or you can go here: http://friendfeed.com/account... - Bret Taylor
That's awesome! - Parth Awasthi
Awesome! now we can also do it by SMS right? (not IM) - Alfredo
Bret, how do you get to that URL if it's not typed in directly? Where is the account setting? - Rochelle
I was wondering what happens when I send a DM to someone who doesn't use beta. I guess after today they will get an email? - Laura Norvig
Rochelle: at the bottom of every email that you get, there is a link - "Unsubscribe from FriendFeed mail" - that takes you to the link that Bret posted. - Tudor Bosman
I'm stunned. Cool. - Micah Wittman
Tudor, there should be a link in the settings to change that. You shouldn't have to get an email to get a link to it. - Rochelle
seems to work well. jut tested it out with someone - Cee Bee
Rochelle, there will be, once we convert the settings page to the new UI, possibly before that. - Tudor Bosman
Rochelle: the email settings are also at https://friendfeed.com/account..., but the Beta is catching up with the account settings UI still. It will be in there imminently, just rolling things out progressively. - Bret Taylor
Okay, excellent. Thanks for the update! - Rochelle
Sweet! - Michael Fidler
Awesome! - Robert Scoble
Nicely done, Tudor. - Anne Bouey
If an entry is sent directly to you and as well as other feeds will it come via email? This can be a little ambiguous in my opinion with the potential for people to respond to direct messages that aren't private. I think its a great step though! - Frankie Warren
Why can't Twitter do this? Oh, yeah, their engineers suck. - Robert Scoble
Cool... Now my mailbox will seem more full ;) - Bindu Reddy
How did the DM feature work before this? There were no emails sent when someone DMed you? - Bindu Reddy
Bindu: this is correct. DMs would only show up in your feed (and in the "Direct messages" filter). - Tudor Bosman
On the DM feed, does a >> icon indicate privacy or just the fact that it is a DM ? - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
>> indicates that it is a DM. All DMs are private (unless cross-posted to a public feed, or to public rooms). - Tudor Bosman
I posted a DM to a room ... that's the same as doing a post really, isn't it? I think it disappeared from my DM list. - Laura Norvig
Yes, a "DM" to a room is the same as a post. Rather, the other way around: if you "post" to another user, we call that a DM. - Tudor Bosman
What!! than it was not really a DM till now...;) Good work. Did our chat at B&B inspire any of this or was this in the works already? - Bindu Reddy
Bindu: we've had this (and "a handful of direct message and email enhancements") working internally in some form or another for about 2 weeks. - Tudor Bosman
@Tudor I see, so the >> indicates DMness, but not necessarily privacy. Do you think we need a privacy icon - like the one we have for private Feeds (rooms) ? - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Got it. Congrats! Good stuff. Though I am not totally sure about sending emails on the comments. It makes total sense for the 1st DM message - Bindu Reddy
Ahsan: Let's say that you receive a message from me. You can look at the list of recipients. If it says "Tudor Bosman to you", it's private. If it says "to you, Tudor's feed, and FriendFeed Feedback", it's not (it's crossposted to my (public) feed and to the (public) FriendFeed Feedback room). - Tudor Bosman
@Tudor Right, thanks. - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Pretty cool! Is it possible to set this up to an SMS instead of an email address? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Scobleizer I get all my Twitter DM's via SMS and have for a long time. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Tudor: i guess it's similar to checking if people were cc'd on an email... but at the same time i think the potential to mess up is higher. especially since the feed paradigm takes some getting used to in the first place. - Frankie Warren
Mark: not right now. (The message isn't formatted in a way suitable for 140 characters...) - Tudor Bosman
Frankie: agreed. We may change the way locks and ">>" are displayed to reduce some of the confusion. - Tudor Bosman
Mark: SMS is not email. Twitter's DM sucks compared to friendfeed. - Robert Scoble
That's still really great, Tudor. Nicely done! - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Robert I agree it isn't optimal but many, many people using Twitter don't have a smartphone and still want to get their DM's when mobile. I also agree this feature now on Friendfeed is the right way to do it. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Excellent - I depend on email notifications for DMs from Twitter. Great to see it here. - Hutch Carpenter
Great! Thanks Brent! - AJ Batac
Why Facebook can't get this right is beyond me. Thank you for resisting the urges of noreply and donotreply email addresses :) - Jay Cuthrell
Thanks for all the love! If you notice any bugs (especially related to replying by email -- missing, incomplete, or incorrectly formatted comments) please let us know by forwarding a few affected messages (including full headers, if possible) to feedback@friendfeed.com. Thanks! - Tudor Bosman
Really good feature for email api, now it's true usable. Thank you. - Рыло из нержавеющей стали from fftogo
OK... so the structure of the email address is 'ignore.<username>@friendfeed.com'. Does this mean in the future I will be able to DM someone by emailing something like 'message.<username>@friendfeed.com'? - Johnny Worthington
Johnny: I wouldn't know :) - Tudor Bosman
Neat.. way to go, Tudor! - Balaji Raghavan
Thank you! Any plans to add it to the FF Notification tool? - Josh Haley
Bret, thanks! And Mark, as a workaround re: wanting to get DMs via SMS, it's pretty easy to set a forwarding filter on one's e-mail to [number]@tmomail.net or whatever your carrier's SMS gateway is. Okay, that's minorly geeky, but IMHO not much of a hurdle at all :) - Adam Lasnik
You can configure multiple email addresses on your account page (http://friendfeed.com/account/); for now, we'll send mail to the one you designate as "primary". You can set [number]@tmomail.net as the primary address and we'll happily send mail to it, which should be delivered as SMS; however, the email messages that we sent won't be properly formatted or clipped to 140 characters, so they may look ugly or get split over multiple SMS messages (and so you may get charged more if you pay per use). - Tudor Bosman
Adam that is exactly what i did. its very easy - Alfredo from fftogo
Thanks again Tudor! - Alfredo from fftogo
Now I just have to solve the problem that nobody cares about me enough to send me direct messages. - Bryce Roney
Bryce++ LOL - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
This feature really rocks. I'm glad it's built into the system here instead of having to be provided by a 3rd party as is is on twitter. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
wow, finally! - orie
Replied from my inbox .. it appeared on the DM by the time I switched back to FF ! Amazing :) - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Well done FF!! DM to a room can be really useful! Bryce LoL, Scoble Rotfl.. - CantorJF
All sounds good, Bret. Next up IM alerts please. ;-) I'm trying to cut down on email. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Please develop a decent mobile/iphone interface - Frank
Great news. I admire your profession on e-mails. - Alp
+1 that the lock and >> icons need a bunch of work (rethought?). The emailing is a very nice thing to have, though. But could we also possibly turn it off please? :) - Karl Knechtel
Thanks, this is another great feature! - Nicholas James
Wow. VERY cool! - Iain Baker
New to Friendfeed but this looks like a great feature! Thanks - Medical Alarm Concepts
this is very cool - Peter Efland
Tudor ftw! - Rick Cogley

Why is paper not dead? Answer CEO of Levenger here: - http://ourdoings.com/roberts...
Why is paper not dead? Answer CEO of Levenger here:
Map
I am talking to Steve Levenger CEO and co-founder of Levenger http://www.levenger.com (his blog is http://blog.wellreadlife.com ). He is trying to convince me that paper is not dead. He has some great ideas, but needs more. Leave them here. - Robert Scoble
I ♥ Levenger. There will always be people who like the high-touch pleasures of reading well-typeset books and writing on fine papers with high-quality writing instruments. I'm waiting for an order in the mail as we speak. - LogEx
Not sure what it's like in the US, but here in Australia a lot of government regulations still require paper based records to be kept. Add to that the fact that only a few companies are setup to distribute letters and bills electronically. Also junk mail / paper-based advertising is a big part of the reason paper is still not dead. - Jason Cartwright
Answer: electronic alternatives are not ubiquitous and universally accessible. it's making great strides, but not quite there. Also, universal wireless has something to do with it as well. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Index cards will ALWAYS find a home http://i.friendfeed.com/797be3c... - Dave Ferrick
Hah. He said friendfeed makes paper look boring. - Robert Scoble
The interface is both intuitive and ubiquitous. Paper's lighter in small quantities and the form factor is more adjustable. Also, most things that destroy paper will take out a computer as well. - Terry Robinson
Bring back the Circa Compact organization pages (ToDo / Goals), Steve!!!!!!! Paper is dead if you quit supplying great products for the medium! - Jack Collins
Ask him why Levenger doesn't accept Paypal. I'd buy a lap desk this second if it did. - Kent
Unfortunately, I can't agree, would love to hear Steve's points. I feel that the soon to be released flexible OLED devices will take the place of current newspapers, electronic forms are replacing paper forms, electronic medical records are replacing filing cabinets of patience history, digital media storage are making library contents accessible from almost anywhere in the world. Yes, this means that we are placing reliance on digital media, but weren't our forefathers placed faith on stone tablets - Vinko
Vinko: the point he made that stuck with me is that things on paper that are signed are worth more. - Robert Scoble
Yeah, there's no such thing as a digital original. - LogEx
auditors. auditors want more then just electronic proof. first they screw up accounting; then we pay them to fix it (SOX); then they make us have dupes of everything in paper. - clarke thomas
Brian: you are absolutely wrong there. Paper is MUCH more expensive. - Robert Scoble
I love Levenger, Moleskine, and Franklin Covey stuff, but I have this mental block where I'm not willing to "mess up" the nice stuff, so I end up writing on index cards instead. - Jon Adair
I have at least 8 Levenger products in view of my right now (not counting the one in my pocket). I think the vast amount of information will someday be transmitted electronically (newspapers, etc.) but paper will still be around, if only for the durability of it. - Mistletoe Glen
What I really love about paper versus digital is that, especially with index cards or loose sheets, I can spread things out and see much more at once than on my phone or even my laptop. I'd love to see someone make a really good Moleskine-like sketchbook that really opens up flat. And would it kill anyone to make journals, sketchbooks, etc. that have a built-in slot for a full-sized pen or pencil? - Jon Adair
People who don't have computers (especially those that don't have easy access to computers, either) need paper. - Rochelle
Both! I love physical notebooks. I also love the NET. I've debated this keep notes on paper or digital for ages. I've a little symbol system that has 'hyperlink' symbols from the NET (e.g. Google Doc) to the physical notebooks and a filing system (based on Star Names) that covers both. As a filing system it's bizarre but as a context in which I know I'm putting everything in a findable place it works well for me. I often start a note online, and continue it in one notebook and finish it in another. - Julian Edward
Leave a comment here on why paper is not dead? I think I'll just mail the guy a letter. Where's my quill? - shelisrael1
Several reasons come to mind: First the effective resolution of paper is much larger than that on a computer screen. (Of most screens, anyway) It's much easier to look at a big drawing, long chunk of text or pagefuls of equations on paper than on the computer. Second electronic ink input options like the Tablet PC are decent but very far removed from the actual mechanics of writing on paper. The PC is heavy and expensive and the format of the Windows electronic notebook is not portable in editable format. - Jiahao Chen
For people like me who have to think carefully before buying gadgets, it's hard to beat the cost of pen and paper. Third, you don't have to power up the paper before writing on it. You can write notes on a bus where you'd fret about ruining a HDD. Fourth, if you drop paper or spill on it, it's usually no biggie. Try saying that for your laptop! Fifth, and most importantly, the current state of hardware and software is well-suited only to the input of ASCII (and some limited Unicode) text entry. - Jiahao Chen
It is an incredible pain to work with information that is not easily notated in text form. Drawings are ok, but try working with chemical structures or mathematical equations on a computer. It's often an exercise in frustration reading documentation and/or shelling out lots of money for specialized software to deal with these data. Sixth, I write and scribble pretty fast, so much so that the time lag for Tablet PCs to process what I'm doing with the stylus is noticeable and distracting. - Jiahao Chen
Sometimes Windows will hiccup and part of a scribble will disappear off the input buffer while Windows deals with disk paging or something like that. Having said all that, computers are great for many things, especially for typesetting documents and page layouts for things that are ready to show to other people. However they are still far from ideal media to play around with ideas and words, and scribbles often do a far better job than dealing with the intricacies of data entry on a computer when thinking. - Jiahao Chen
OK, sorry for the terribly long answer and possible abuse of medium, but paper and pen works far better for me when jotting down ideas as they are forming, and are usually better than the computer for organizing these ideas as they coalesce into coherence. Once past that stage however, computers are far superior for producing legible output that you wouldn't be embarrassed to show people. BTW I love Levenger stationery! If I could afford it, I'd buy it all the time. Too bad I'm still stuck in grad school. - Jiahao Chen
Remember Minority Report where Tom Cruise rearranges information on a big board in front of him? You can do that today with paper products. - Bruce Lewis
I love the Levenger catalog!!!! Really nice, high quality paper / pen / ink products. Geared towards execs who remember the virtues of writing - Susan Beebe
I confess, I am a Levenger addict. I am also an IT professional, who uses many paper based systems for managing GTD, as well as a paper based planner, which is wrapped in Levenger's Bomber Jacket leather. I have several notebooks with Bomber Jacket leather, and for some reason, it adds to the enjoyment of putting pen to paper. I also use "The Hit List", which is a Mac GTD app, but honestly, the feel of good paper, with a good pen can't be beat. Instant archive, and no worry about media failures. - Bruce Garlock
It's just a flesh-wound! ;) - Meryn Stol
I don't want any time-sensitive information via paper, it's too old. However I like paper for portability, longevity, tactile sensation and smell. Moleskines, post-its, notepads etc are all part of my daily life. BTW, love Levenger.com . I'm an old customer in Australia. - Cait
I dispute that paper is always more expensive. Digital storage requires data conversion (if it's old), redundancy (if it's important and you want to keep something for a long time), hardware, monitoring and eletricity. But yes, sometimes it's more expensive. - Cait
I do the vast majority of my work in digital form, but I also love paper, a fountain pen, good ink. Each tool has its place. - Rob McNair-Huff
Paper can do so much more than computers can at this point. Try making a 3-D tactile model with a computer in just a few seconds. You probably don't want to see how far your computer can glide, unless you're mad at it. Paper is easier on the eyes than most monitors and screens at this point and even the ones that are getting closer to a soft medium for viewing paper is quicker. Paper is extremely cheap for area and the ability to write multiple contextual ideas down. Paper has at least another 20 years. - Jimminy Fuller
It's not dead because my parents and my wife still use it. It is going away though. - Jesse Stay
It's also not dead because there are still art-forms that revolve around it. I will always still love drawing and painting on paper or canvas. - Jesse Stay
i hate paper clutter. i am forced to collect them in order to document write-offs for taxes. it's unfortunately still a necessary evil. - sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
blackfeathers, check out Evernote - I've gotten rid of most my paper through them. - Jesse Stay
I'm sure when Guttenburg first published his books, some people clamored for scrolls. Humans tend to be sentimental about technology. It's only a matter of time until paper is gone, and I say bring it on. - Ian Wright
Dunder Mifflin will be pleased http://www.dundermifflin.com/ :) - Jim Connolly
It's simply a massively entrenched technology. People joke around about stone tablets, but clay tablets really were the dominant medium for information storage for probably almost 4,000 years. Modern paper has been around for less than 2,000 years. I'm thinking its probably going to be around for a least a little while longer. - Victor Ganata
Still always handy having some nice, solid records. Assume a worst-case scenario, if we had it ALL electronic...one decent, world-sized electro-magnetic impulse, there goes the entire planet's accumulated knowledge in one hit. Those ancients at least still have their stuff around 4000 years later because clay tablets and other solid mediums LASTED the distance. - George Hall (Australia)
Wow. I'm awed by the dialog in response to Robert's question about paper. We are living in interesting times as so many of us seek and find new balances between old technology and new--balance points that are themselves in a state of flux. We feel it's our duty at Levenger to side with paper and help it evolve in the face of the tremendous evolutionary pressure from advancing technology. If ultimately paper goes extinct, let it be a gradual and noble death. - Steve Leveen
One bit of advice that I gave to Robert and I'd like to share with all of you. In the waning days of the Golden Age of paper-based books, grab hold of the books you cherish and write in the margins. Write in the front and back and everywhere in between. History has shown that the most valuable books of all are those written in by famous people. And you are all famous to your family and descendants. Actual ink leaving physical impressions on natural paper in your own hand--it will never come again. - Steve Leveen
One curious little followup to this...I took a look today at the Twitter hashtags #vicfires and #fireupdates. NO tweets from #fireupdates showed up, even though it was a busy hashtag during the Victorian Bushfires. #vicfires only goes back to 30 days ago. Very good example of the IMPERMANCY of the electronic form. Any of us wanting to refer back to February 2009 for historical data on the Twitter record now really have nothing to refer to. Makes me wish I'd done my February 2009 tweets on clay tablets - George Hall (Australia)
Bret Taylor
Great job! - Robert Scoble
Nice job friendfeed! - Kevin Mohr
Awesome work! - Aaron Draczynski
Indeed, very good job. Gives me some ideas on Nambu integration. - Gersham Meharg
realtime by default now eh? nice - Karl Rosaen
I hate it. I love it! I haven't even scrolled down to the bottom yet. Hold on.......ok, it's good. :-) - Jeff Eddings
Cheers Bret & team - it's feeling pretty good so far (which includes initial gut reaction) - Christopher Galtenberg
Nice job. I can at the very least say it is a big improvement aesthetically. I haven't finished checking everything out yet, but so far so good. - Rolf Schewe
why there is no Re-share function? - Tony
I miss the ability to have a Firefox sidebar setup that just had my list of items scrolling past and nothing else along the side like this view: http://friendfeed.com/realtim... - Justin Yost
Reshare will be back. Just an artifact of beta-testing, didn't make it in for this morning - Bret Taylor
Definitely not looking for attention here, but I just don't like it. - Nick
This real time integrated updates is pretty kick butt. Especially for comments. - Gersham Meharg
don't like the grey background - Moses
Any new comment can not move up this item? - Tony
Our settings vary to prevent things shuffling around excessively. We bubble up when someone you are subscribed to comments. - Bret Taylor
I like the updating comments, but when it shifts what I'm reading out of the frame it's a little distracting. Overall, great work! - Derek Coatney
also wish i can add links/pics/embed in the "comments"...for example, i'd like to include an image of my email from http://www.emailcover.com, but it only shows up as a link - brainno722 (Peter)
thanks, it looks awesome! - Dani Martínez
Congratulations guys on a job well done! - Thomas Hawk
Love it, but needs a floating Pause button. - Barak B
+1 Barak - Kenton
Barak, very good idea - Kol Tregaskes
The filter is great! But any filter can not output to friends. - Tony
+1 Barak - Tony
what filter? - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
adding a filter sucks, things like has comments from should ajax populate :( - Stuart Evans from twhirl
you can create filters when you click "filter" - Tony
The anticipation was high, but so was delivery! Great job FF team. - Micah Wittman
Awesome! - Iván Abrego
Like it! Facebook import (notes & link, not status) seems broken though... - Alex Lomas
A keyboard shortcut for Pause, maybe? - Micah Wittman
Thanks, Alex, we will look into it, - Bret Taylor
Can you open an existing conversation in a new window? - Barak B
1st look is good, like the real time...didn't make it to the bottom the first few minutes. Also the comment box drops down as I am commenting now...message got off screen ;) - Sanne Buurma
please add keyboard shortcut for play/pause feed - Ouriel Ohayon
Please, remove the gray background. Any color, but not gray. - bnoise
Agree with Andy, dislike the fugly grey - Sally Church
Barak: click on the timestamp to open a conversation in a new window. - Kevin Mohr
Barack B : you can click the time and select open in new window. - Simon Wicks
Just bring back the filters to the main feed. Other than that, it looks awesome :D - Gerardo Curiel
Agreed, the grey isn't that great. - Gersham Meharg
refresh the page would move up the item which have newest comment? - Tony
sad grey: why don't you let everyone choose the colour of the background? - Davide Leonelli
looks awful for me - http://www.flickr.com/photos... - do not like the gray or the wasted space - Nick
Grey or not, rather think about what the beta has to offer in functionality - Sanne Buurma
Please, bring back service icons near each post — it's very hard to scan information flow without them. Also hope you'll do something with new subscription module — it's unuseful while managing a lot of imaginary friends. - Juras Vetrau
Nice. Good job guys. - Peter Kruit
The colouring needs looking at for sure. Unless, of course, you are going to redesign the logo? ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
dislike the grey, sorry - Manuela
Agree on colouring - but hey its a beta. Thanks Bret. - Roberto Bonini
But Bret, picking a nice background colour is basically free (although I guess you should really be testing 41 variations :-)) - Alex Gawley
perhaps highlighting your own comments in the flood of comments (easier to scan/find)? - brainno722 (Peter)
agree, gray background is bothersome. - AJ Kohn
Wait, is the frequent shifting up and down of items I'm reading (i.e. the items in view) really supposed to work out well? I suppose you guys tried it for a while and you just got used to it? - j1m
Peter, yep but thankfully the Cleaner FriendFeed GM script still works in Chrome and FFox, which does this for you. - Kol Tregaskes
Don't like: broke my Blocks list, Block not available from Hover Menu - Will Higgins™
Why Will Higgins have a superscript of "TM"? how typed in? - Tony
it keeps the bad low-contrast grey on white text for comments that deters me from reading it. You made the main text bigger, now make the comment text black. - Kevin Marks
Fantastic job guys ! - David Berrebi
can't see source of posts and comments - Moses
Will: block will be back, just missing today, but it is not something we are removing (just something we didn't get in for this morning) - Bret Taylor
I think you guys should really embrace the idea of hashtags. Let us add them to other people's posts, having various services auto-tag imported items, let us search on them using filters. Tagging is one great way for us to get a handle on the volume of information here. - Kevin Kuphal
What's with the orange and the green on the side? Its a bit ugly if you ask me. Also, is there a way to change this, as well as make the beta permanent? (I like living on the cutting edge). - darnell
I too like the orange and green. It's the blue I'm not sure about. :-) - Daniel Dulitz
I like the FF blue - nouhad
Yeah, but it clashes with the logo. Either Friendfeed needs to change their logo, or get rid of the colors. Or (even better) allow users to change the colors. :-) - darnell
Looks horrible to me, I think we should have a customizable interface more like iGoogle, I like the idea though, just more customization, like sidebar customization, friend lists, realtime widget, chat widget, all movable and arrangeable, there sure is enough space etc... - Kyle Weller
I'm with Kyle and Darnell - I like being able to customize my GMail colours, and having that feature on FF would be cool - nouhad
Yes, bring back service icons, somewhere. Also, the bigger font in entries doesn't look good. - bnoise
Ignoring 71 previous comments... I really like the new design! One request: allow the pause button to follow my cursor as a scroll down the page! - Chris Messina
+1 Chris Messina. That would be an awesome feature. - Beau Liening
Add a floating "COMMENT" feature at the bottom of each thread, so I don't have to scroll up to click "comment"... this is a weird experience in new beta UI - Susan Beebe
@Ari: This is why I really think tagging is what they need to focus on. If we could each add #ffbeta or something to our own posts as well as others, you get the trending and other features that twitter already has. Combine this with filters and you really get some killer information management features. - Kevin Kuphal
I really like having one UI instead of different modes (normal, realtime, miniwindow), but to support the old "mini window" experience, perhaps allow the right hand side bar with filters and subscriptions to be collapsible? - Karl Rosaen
@Karl: API is key here. Twitter isn't massively popular because their website rocks. Twitter is massively popular because there's a massive layer of applications built on top of it. Build that for FF and you have the same potential growth - Kevin Kuphal
I wish it could use more of the screen real estate of my monitor, given my normal window size, it has large amounts of unused space on either size of the content due to the fixed layout. Maybe a multi-column mode? - Ray Cromwell
Nice job! but, where are my rooms?? - Krishnamoorthy
@Krishnamoorthy rooms I believe have changed to feeds beta.friendfeed.com/[room_name] - Lou Paglia
the new design works better for me. I am sure there will be glitches, but so far so good. - Sharon Hurley Hall
Is there a way to change my prefs over to to the beta so I don't have to keep entering beta.friendfeed...? - Ryan Stanley
UI suggestion: there's a link to expand all comments, there should be one to collapse them as wel. - Ryan Stanley
UI suggestion: after expanding comments you scroll all the way to the bottom reading the thread, then you have scroll all the way back up to click the Comment link. Why not have it at the bottom of the thread too. - Ryan Stanley
Feature suggestion: FF needs a built-in way of referring to people publicly, just like Twitter's @. Perhaps use the same convention. But there needs to be a way people to address each other in public threads, so a user can make sure to be informed when people are talking or referring to them. - Ryan Stanley
going to read through faq - roadmap of what made beta & what's going away would be nice - big concern for me is the lose of ability to expand lists to see individual participants - i find that one of ff's strongest features - that and block but i see from earlier in this thread that its will make it in later in beta (whew)... - mike "glemak" dunn
Um, Twitter much? - Christiana
A Pause button that follows you on page scroll could be more distracting than it's worth. But how about something like it appears upon a white space mousedown/mouseup event. - Micah Wittman
You guys should use this userstyle: http://beta.friendfeed.com/ajbatac... - Kyle Weller
Curious about how the new design will affect the iPhone version of the site...? - Chris Messina
welcome qwerty. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
Hmm, I tried to read this thread, but I never got to the bottom, because the unexpected shifts of the text just became too much after a while. Fundamentally, if the page keeps shifting up and down unexpectedly, it's hard to see how anyone's ever going to read it -- hence the many requests for a floating pause button, which would help. You could also imagine pause on hover. Being able to read down the page without having the text disappear seems to me like the #1 use case of ff. - j1m
I like it. - Willem (@wim66) ☠
Of course, it's not really like you want Pause -- the real-time updates are great when they're below wherever the eyes are :-) - j1m
I love the new UI! I'm a big fan. It feels a lot cleaner and more organized. The real-timeness doesn't bother me. It seems pretty clever about when and when not to refresh. Great job, guys!!! : ) - Jess Lee
Bret - Great job! There are certainly things to clean up before this interface goes to the main page. Rooms should REALLY be on the subscribed list on the right hand column. I would LOVE to be able to put Blank Lines in comments. I don't care if they count for a whole lines worth of characters (as opposed to a more common one character for the cr/lf) Blank lines make comments more legible and clear than just a runtogether paragraph. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I don't like how the interface STILL loses my place if I subscribe to someone while posting a comment (or even reading it!) I should be able to subscribe to YOU while I read YOU and not lose my page place. The Page should need to be refreshed to reset everyone because of the new subscription. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I don't know about the queued items, I like the real time feed, having selectable speeds instead of "over-caffination required mode" would be good. Most discussions this is irrelevant, but the discussion on tis new beta this morning (i.e. on scoble's feed) showed how insane that can be. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The real-time-only feed in the beta is causing Safari 4b on my MacBook use up a lot of CPU cycles, hence depleting the battery faster. I'm sure FF3 will too. Please consider an "ECO Mode" similar to the current standard mode, which only refreshes once every few minutes, for those running their machines on battery power. Without such an eco-mode, and with the rapid-fire pace of live updates, I fear that I won't be using FFeed much at all. Certainly not leaving that tab open for hours on end like I used to. - Siddharth Deb
I don't know if I've done something, or you guys did, but when I look here, I only have a few services setup in the account, when I go to the old interface I have a LOT more -I'm not certain that everything is feeding through? (i.e. I have Digg and Disqus set up, I see the correct list of icons on the old interface, but on the beta "settings" popup, No Dice. Even if this is irrelevant to the actual data flow, please fix this to make me sleep well at night. ;) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
One more thing - Could we have a character counter in the comments? It would be REALLY nice, if my account is setup to post this comment to my twitter account, and it's going to post the link to this discussion, please Add the number of characters in the link (plus a space) to the total character count. That way I won't be truncating the comment and/or the URL when it gets to twitter. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Another thing: I used to be able to click the "More" next to a single discussion, and "Link to this discussion" Where is that? If this is an outmoded way of thinking please let me know. Otherwise, um...can we have that feature back? - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob: the timestamp ("9 hours ago") is the permalink - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: You rock! Thanks! - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
do you need a techno dunce to help the average joe make sense of this?? haha...i love it... - Lauren Shanahan
Very twitter like. But better due to nice conversational. - xiawinter
I actually kinda like the grey... though it does look like it's an opportunity to let companies brand the background in some way. - Frankie Warren
For cc to Twitter functionality, can the number of characters be a count-down instead of a count-up? - Winston Teo
I'd like to second the notion that there should be a way to address an individual within a thread...the agreed upon "Rob:" works great, but maybe could be clickable so that there's no confusion as to which Rob or which Scoble you're talking to ;) (i.e. maybe a CTRL-Click or something on the person's name after their comment to start a new comment with their name at the beginning? ) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The grey background looks kinda dullish, and it looks like someone ran out of ideas for colours.. - Winston Teo
IMO avatars occupy way too much real estate now, I liked the smaller ones better. - ǝuǝƃnǝ
thsi is nothing on the new design, but after being on here all night with no attention to a down twitter, I am reminded of this: It would be nice if I could set the post to twitter for comments and likes a) permanent b) off or C) on a per comment/like basis -twitter users say this "yeah, when ppl I follow flood me with FF spam ... I usually unfollow ... even block if it irritates me enough." And I would like to be able to be easily selective of what gets put through, and it would get more GOOD attn for FF - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
please, for the love of god, move the "comment" link to the BOTTOM of the list of comments. seriously, am I the only one who can't believe this hasn't been fixed for so long? - Dossy Shiobara
I like it - Cristian
Great stuff! :-) FriendFeed does it better than Facebook. Please go real-time all the way for subscription requests and confirmatoions too. - Nenad Nikolic from twhirl

It's not bad, but I prefer the smoothness of the old one to the lines and edges in this new one. - scott willeke
I love the new letter-counting post widget in the beta though. - scott willeke
at first glance, find it much more readable than the old one. Pity there still isn't "my items that were liked or commented by others" - Stephanie Booth from twhirl
Bret: all the videos are now up at http://scobleizer.blip.tv -- thanks for inviting me and for all you do. - Robert Scoble
I like this beta - Goofy2
Stephanie: comments:1 likes:1 from:sbooth - Justin Long
stephanie & justin - that is in the catch all http://beta.friendfeed.com/filter... - i went and liked/commented on something from each of you that had no other activity - you should both see that bubble up in /discussions... - mike "glemak" dunn
LOVE THE NEW BETA ! the new filter is so powerful, more powerful if you could add "language parameter"!! - foxmachia {山石}

No @drylight my friendfeed video is embargoed until either @techcrunch breaks the embargo or 9 a.m. Monday morning, whichever comes first.

Robert: you are really good at this teasing game :-) is it going to be much much better than twitter + facebook? - Edwin Khodabakchian
Really, he's worse than the last 5 minutes of a 24 Episode :S - Gerardo Curiel
The thing is, I bet Robert is busting to tell us almost as much as we are to see it... - Johnny Worthington
Quick, to the time machine! *looks* Oh crap. I broke it. Tell usssss! - Jon, the Chilled Beartato
I have the best video of the whole press event. I can't wait to put it up. I bet Arrington gets his up first. - Robert Scoble
Thanks. Now I can't wait either:-) - Francine Hardaway from twhirl
Edwin: yes. But the Koolaid they served us is still affecting my judgment. - Robert Scoble
Just too much, your the master of this and now I feel... well... TELL ME>>> WHAT IS IT!??!??!?!? - stephen pieraldi
Stephen: an all-new friendfeed enters beta on Monday. - Robert Scoble
Robert is trying to tell us through this secret message that friendfeed will "verify" your threads on the "right" and make your "choice". Then "stun" people that "can't wait" until "monday". and will also add World of Warcraft features to friendfeed. - Alfredo from fftogo
Patiently awaiting the Monday stunner. - Bernie Goldbach
I'm not sure why, but for some reason they let me in tonight. Robert went above and beyond the call of duty and has high def video of the whole thing, pretty much start to finish, up close and personal. It might be a few days until the video can go up, but in the end you won't miss anything... thanks to Robert. - Ken Sheppardson
You guys all have to wait through the weekend. Not everybody will like it. And that's how products evolve. Feedback. But I bet a ton of you will find it valuable. - Louis Gray
Brian: Monday morning, 9AM Pacific. - Ken Sheppardson
I'll have to like it Louis... I just bought another FriendFeed shirt... - Johnny Worthington
Damnit, Robert! You're such a tease. I can't wait until Monday to find out what's got you so excited about the upcoming changes! - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
ok, this just isn't right. I'm actually looking forward to Monday. - metalerik
I can't wait for Monday! - Keith - @tsudo
I am excited about new FF beta release on Monday - wooo hooo! So glad I loved and stayed with FF, just proves how smart I am huh?! :P - Susan Beebe
Susan yep :-) - Richard A.
and i also wish for an official iphone app for the stunning new design on Monday. - Philip Lei
ok i am really excited!! - (jeff)isageek
jeff: me too. I can't sleep. Philip: this new UI works on iPhone (I asked) but it still doesn't have an iPhone app coming out. There will be lots of goodies to come after this UI is done, though. - Robert Scoble
Sounds good and looking forward to checking out the iPhone compatibility - Joe Dawson
Nah Nah Nah. My access is better than your access :-P - Keith Barrett
Can't wait for the new UI. - Russ Jackson
I just hope CADIE wasn't involved in the UI design. :) - John E. Bredehoft from fftogo
Robert, just dont cry. ;) - Jeremiah Owyang
that'll be Monday evening in Europe, it's just not fair! :) I hope they finally give us profiles - Gaby K. Slezák

Daniel J. Pritchett
New FriendFeed feature speculation here:
New FriendFeed UI rolling out to http://beta.friendfeed.com on Monday. Paul Buchheit asked us a few days ago how we most like to direct message people, so that's a big hint. What are you hoping for / expecting? - Daniel J. Pritchett
DMs would dovetail nicely with more robust profiles. I've never really been sure if I believed the "we prefer to let your stream do the talking" explanation. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Based on Robert Scoble's talk today, real-time becomes the default way to view feeds. Maybe some tweaks to that UI so it becomes easier to follow a conversation in real time. I'm not expecting any of the stuff like DMs or profiles: those seem too minor to hold a big event over. Whatever it is, it has to be something new, or something old done in a new way. Profiles and DMs are old hat. - Mark Trapp
I agree with you that we're looking at a significantly overhauled UI based on Robert's "exhausting change" comments. I still think DMs are going to be snuck in there somewhere, even if it's not the centerpiece of the update. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
I'm also thinking we'll see smart lists, or saved searches, which would integrate with the real time view. To be able to track 50 services in real time for specific keywords would be pretty huge. - Mark Trapp
I like that one Mark, keep it coming! - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Temporal semantic noise filters = HIDE *.lolcats FROM steven perez | derrick WHILE (t != 9:00 - 17:00) :P - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I'm less confident in this one, but dovetailing into the real-time feed and smart lists, maybe a way to import entire social graphs from other services, and keep them in sync. Are you on Facebook? No problem, you don't need to add dozens of imaginary friends, we know about your social graph. - Mark Trapp
I would love to have smart virtual friends lists. Why do I need to import my Twitter friends when you can do it for me? How about you also discover the other services they're using while you're at it. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
"Better than Real Life" :) - Meryn Stol
Mark, I agree with your general observeration. Still, I think that a profile (if only a 140 char biography) and DM should be part of the mix. If they don't do it now, they'll add it later. I expect much more than that though. A leap in UI, something not easily explainable. Also, it's very hard to predict what exactly it is, because really no-one knows what the real-time, asynchronous, multi-user interface of the future looks like. But then, maybe the FF team does. ;) - Meryn Stol
Meryn, we can be pretty sure what it *won't* be - a rich client like Java or Air. FF rocks because it's a snappy web service with a lot of Javascript UI goodness. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Now, would the App store pipeline allow for a surprise timed release of a FF app? - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Daniel, yes of course. It surely will be light and snappy. That has been FF's UI edge from the beginning. But what it will look like... hard to say. There are so many possible ways to display data... For example, how threads bump to the top now if there's a new comment or like - that's very rough. You could notify people of updated threads/conversations in a gazillion ways I think. Maybe we'll see a sort of mix between regular and current "real-time" view. - Meryn Stol
Is there room for multiple vertical streams of content? Sort of like how you've got your selected feed in the main window and then the last 4 rooms to update on the sidebar? Maybe we could cram some more stuff in there. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
It certainly sounds like the realtime feed is where the new stuff is trending... it's too bad I rarely manage to get into the realtime feed. Every time I try I go back to the regular view. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
But most of all I hope they took their user feedback seriously. There have been so much good UI suggestions floating around on FF, not only in the FriendFeed feedback room. - Meryn Stol
I don't want to see cat-dog pics here :) Please make a photo filter. - Alp
That would be nice to see... I toss off UI suggestions in there pretty regularly and I don't often hear back from someone I recognize as a FF employee - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
I'd like to see the real-time notices somehow "grouped" per thread I think. Well for me this is totally opaque. :) A total state of not-knowing. :) - Meryn Stol
Somewhere in Silicon Valley Kevin Fox is reading this thread and saying "Crap! I've only got two days left to get Meryn's newest feature requests implemented!" - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
@brian +1 ... i'd just like a big "HIDE LOLCATS" button.. Paul - can we get that? - andy brudtkuhl
1UP Andy - Derrick
if( (lolspeak comments / total comments) > 0.33 ) then hide thread - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
One feature is that you can now get rid of Scoble. Arrington liked that one. - Robert Scoble
Robust profiles (with widgets which can be placed elsewhere). Smart lists, based on search. DMs. Some name changes to make things more intuitive for people coming from other services. Lists could be Pages, for instance. And Rooms could be Groups. Typography and layout improvements. Avatars linking to profiles on comments. Dunno -- so many possibilities. I hope the changes both add flexibility for power users, and familiarity for newcomers. - Chris Baskind
You trained us to set up "noisy asshole" lists already Robert, what more do we need? ;) - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Daniel: you'll see in the video on Monday! :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert, I hope it's the fabled "I don't want to hear about SxSW again for at least 90 days" filter. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Nice job adopting the new Hulk icon from Thomas btw - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
small profile type info somewhere, ability to comment at the bottom of the thread, rather than scrolling back up top as well. - Simon Wicks
++ Daniel. Now why would anyone want to do that Robert? :) - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Direct links and likes on comments? That's been a common request for a while now. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
On a brighter note no matter what happens somebody will be mad. - Tony C from fftogo
For instance I'd like to highlight Simon Wicks' comment on "add a comment dialog to the bottom of each thread - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Daniel, yes, that'd be great. Where did he write that? - Meryn Stol
Oh, and puppies. Every FF user gets a puppy. - Chris Baskind
@Meryn - about 5-6 comments before your latest - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Ah, missed that. Well we could also use a "like" button for individual comments. :) (which has been suggested an infinite times I think) - Meryn Stol
I'd like more visual cues on age and heat of posts/comments. For example, I'm tired of being taken in by freshly bumped six-month-old shares and embarrassing myself by treating them as if they were brand new. Plenty of other good things to do with simple background color gradients. Take a cue from video games in that department. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I think that the focus will be on search feature, more strong search more agregation mecanisme, not DM DM is a loosy way it will make coversation more closed, the positive way FF doing is to make it more public. the new FF will have some innovative search feature+integration of FB public page+integration of more service+Greader comment import. - abdellah
YO DAWG - I HERD U LIKE IT META SO I IZ COMMENTING ON YOUR COMMENT ABOUT LIKING YOUR LIKES ON COMMENTS *runs away* - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Hey is there a FFundercats coming up tonight? The chatroom should be a jumping like popcorn popper with this news - Daniel J. Pritchett
threaded comments seems easy, so we can comment on comments and have it visually apparent - I'm guessing a profile page, too, with DM - William Harryman
One feature I'd really like like - but I don't think we'll get is - faceted identity or persona's. Sometimes, I'd want to like art work, funny pics, etc. I'm quite human. Still, I think it'd mess up my feed. I'd like to be able to choose "funny mode" on FF were I can see my favorite funny people (or those who, amongst other things, post funny stuff) and if I then like something, it only turns up in my "funny" feed. - Meryn Stol
I really need to hold myself back to post all kind of funny comments on threads. - Meryn Stol
Daniel. Yes, we will be live tonight. http://friendfeed.com/e... - Johnny Worthington
Meryn: why can't you have two different friendfeed accounts? One funny, one serious? - Robert Scoble
Thanks for the link Johnny! Everyone take a look at Johnny's link for further new FF feature speculation, and join the FFundercats live recording tonight for more fun. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Robert, well yes, that would be another option. But I'd like it better in one account I think. Still, maybe I do it. I'll call myself "Prince Meryn". :) He's an allround asshole who doesn't have to work and makes sexist jokes all the time. Just like you know me! ;) - Meryn Stol
Imaginary Friends imbued with intelligence and a sense of self, able to issue Likes and Comments with reckless abandon. - DGentry
Two Words: Three Dee - Ken Sheppardson
Yeah imaginary friends who like me. I want that too! - Meryn Stol
A LOLCat to English translator built in. - Alex Scoble
On the subject of imaginary friends, why not replace the "like" button on an imaginary friend with the "reshare" button in the "More" dropdown? Liking imaginary friends always seems like a waste. Save me a few clicks on the reshare instead. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Sorry Meryn. I couldn't resist. Here are my top 5 feature predictions/hopes: (1) better threading for conversations to make it easier to parse, (2) visualization of conversations happening in near real time (ala Digg Swarm), (3) flexible search filters (like my first comment here), (4) standard profiles, and (5) DM/IM style direct comm linkages for impromptu backchannel discussions. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Down with the new FriendFeed! The old FriendFeed is better! Let us join together in protest now: http://friendfeed.com/rooms... - Daniel J. Pritchett
I'd like to see people's display names in my IM updates. The account names invariably confuse me - who are geekandahalf and itblogger? - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Smellovision integration that releases the scent of bacon every time alex tries to Kill the Unkillable Thread - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Me and Alex Scoble, Daniel. - Derrick
It will have a huge banner at the top proclaiming to everyone that ITBlogger is Alex Scoble. - Alex Scoble

It truly amazes me how much my Friendfeed wish list differs from everyone else in this thread. - Sean McBride
Sean, is yours related to politics? - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
No connection to politics whatever -- rather, more streamlined methods for managing huge flows of information and news in general. Advanced recommender systems. More efficient and compact displays of news items. Feedly is on the right track. - Sean McBride
That sort of thing is a bit harder to speculate on than plain feature requests, Sean. I'm sure we'll see some advances along those lines as well. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
I hope FF will explore the "conversation" route for a while. There's so much to be improved on that front alone. Let Feedly - break their head on filtering... The things get integrated eventually. - Meryn Stol
List view, multi-column view, and recommender systems are easily doable now, and other developers are pushing ahead aggressively on this front. Recommender systems are going to be the backbone of all news and social media services in the near future. - Sean McBride
DMs???????????????????????????????? Hmmmmmmm not so sure. - Roberto Bonini
@Roberto: Paul sure is hinting at it... http://friendfeed.com/e... - Daniel J. Pritchett
Oh yeah. I remember that post. Yeah. He is hinting. - Roberto Bonini
The best part of this thread is imagining the moans when it rolls out...no matter how hard developers try to please, it seems as though there are always some who hate it. (don't tell 'em, but it's change they really hate...LOL) - Karoli
It would be great to contact someone here instead of finding their Twitter and going over there to do it. I hope any changes include favoring what we share HERE on FRIENDFEED!!! over Tweets! This would be best for FF and I am tired of bumping my FF shares up to get them to show. I only do that for some of what I share and many are bound to miss many of the others. - Internet Strategist
3D LOLcats. - You.

We did same here, maybe same day, but no photos...the little "bug" needed a macro lens & the sonogram operator couldn't find one. Not polite in public what she did use but it is an internal device, an alternative to the belly transponder, and said shape is usually known by another name. Rather surprising in the further context that the sono operator was a very cute, young blonde. Confusing day. Regarding "marketing experiment" - I forget where I read it, but someone said that the most successful advertising is the stuff that doesn't look like advertising at all, because it does such an outstanding job of meeting your needs. Valid points in your post, and there's no reason why smaller services can't try to meet their users' needs also. For example, look at all of the fuss over how services suggest users. What if your personal suggested users on Twitter were to suddenly include pediatricians? - John E. Bredehoft

Apple previewing iPhone OS 3.0 at an event March 17 - http://venturebeat.com/2009...
I don't see a source? :S - Jalada
Whats in it????? Push????? Copy and paste????? Over the air sync???? - Roberto Bonini
Maybe it'll support MMS. =) - Daniel Bruce
Set expectations accordingly or you'll be disappointed. Why do I bother, people never listen and are always disappointed - Bwana ☠
Who CARES about copy and paste. BACKGROUND, PLEASE. - Mona Nomura
and maybe folders?? would be nice as well.. - Jaap Willem
We need to move away from MMS - why save media locally, when we can e-mail? Cloud? MMS is backwards thinking, imho. - Mona Nomura
Sure, ignore a technology "everyone" (at least here) knows and uses, for the promise of some other non-obvious, probably not well known (and as a result, harder to use), not universally supported tech. That's good business practice. =p - Daniel Bruce
MMS don't care. Copy/Paste don't care. iDisk app, now, that'd be nice. - Paul Grav
I'm backing Mona up with 1 MILLION JIGAWATTS! We need to ditch MMS and move forward. - vijay
I want a stable browser. I fear I'm setting my expectation too high. - Bwana ☠
MMS is also backwards compatible with many, many millions of phones which don't support email, either at all or well. Not supporting it is just embarrasing. - Ian Betteridge
Sorry Jalada, source was a good one: Apple :) - MG Siegler
+1 Ian, my point exactly. None of the non-smart phones have good, or any, support for email, much less the cloud or the internets. If I wanted to send a pic to any of my friends or family, I can't zap it into the cloud and magically expect them to be able to access it (they can't, none of their phones have e-mail or internet support worth a damn). With MMS, however, I can send it to them, pretty much without exception. It's a complete show-stopper. - Daniel Bruce
mms is for grandmas. I don't know anyone that uses it. - Zio Bonino
How about Apple Store 3.0 with reduced restrictions and deprecation of capricious app banning? :) - Ray Cromwell
+1 Mona; here's hoping for Background Apps, which will allow some innovation by app developers to improve upon what MMS and SMS offers. Background Apps also need improved battery life == new hardware hopefully. - Bob Hitching
There are many free services that enable picture emailing, without logging into the services. Facebook and Flickr are the two most common. With Docs to Go coming for all mobile platforms, why do we need MMS? (to add, I've personally never MMSd documents but someone in another thread said it was common) - Mona Nomura from fftogo
Because there's like 100 million phones that can receive MMS, and 90 million of them have really sucky web browsers, application environments, and slow network speeds. - Ray Cromwell
But what would you be using MMS for? If multi media is your number one need, get a multi media phone. And most multi media phones have native SNS apps. - Mona Nomura from fftogo
And another MMS question: wouldn't you want to view and save media via desktop w/out flashcard adapters and cables? The future is simplicity. Minimal chords, attachments, basically accessories that get tangled up and hog up USB or FireWire holes. - Mona Nomura from fftogo
The simplicity for me is taking a picture and sending it asynchronously to a phone number without having to care what kind of phone it is. There are far too many legacy phones to ignore MMS. Your assumption is that everyone upgrades to the lastest phone, I know quite a few people with 3+ year old phones. And I bought my Nanny a "free" Nokia media phone, an old Series40, which can't run squat. - Ray Cromwell
So let me get this straight: because MMS has been the standard to share media since 2003, naturally, more phones support MMS. Because more phones support it, and most people still have older phones, there is still a need. Ok, that is fair. So if you have a need to instantly send your Nanny pictures then why choose an iPhone? And I still stand by my statement that MMS is backwards thinking. Apple and AT&T made a bold and perhaps game changing move omitting MMS. I agree with their strategy 220%. - Mona Nomura from fftogo
I heard Nova excludes MMS, too. All hear say until Pre and 3.0 is rolled out. Bottomlime: I'm all for fewer accessories and peripherals, moving on to other options. I wonder if there's a way to exclude MMS from my plan to get the people I correspond with in the habit of checking where I aggregate my media in lieu of hardware dependence. - Mona Nomura from fftogo
There's something to be said for interoperability and standards. And the use case is really other people sending me MMS . The iPhone doesn't support vCard or iCalendar either, again, eschewing standards that have been in place for a decade. I honestly don't see forcing someone to launch a browser and synchronously load photos as an improvement over an asynchronous push technology that works without a gazillion web based UIs, chewing up extra battery life and memory. - Ray Cromwell
??? I email my photos or upload to various sites. People who do heavy business activities on their mobiles all have phones that support the various oulets I aggregate my media. All others, access them via desktop/laptop. As for Vcard and calendar, that is a whole different topic, but I have found my work arounds. The resources are there. It's just new and different. - Mona Nomura from fftogo
Either which way, my bottomline is: the future is minimalistic simplicity, and omitting hardware dependency. Once you lose your phone, the MMS media is lost with it. As is data you didn't get a chance to sync. How are solutions to that NOT forward thinking? - Mona Nomura from fftogo
If MMS is to be replaced with cloud storage, then define an OMA/IETF/3GPP REST API for this that is standardized and can be adopted by hardware, applications, and sites. Simply replacing it with a website just fragments everything and makes mobile implementations less efficient. MMS is about instant-photo sharing, not snapping photos and asking people to look at them later when they get to a desktop - Ray Cromwell
If I extend your argument, we should replace SMS with gazillions of Twitter clones. How does 20 proprietary interfaces improve user experience over a single one? The vast majority of people using these devices for media sharing aren't as tech-savvy as you think. Create a standard, then get MobileMe, Flickr, Picasa, FaceBook, MySpace, et al, to adopt it. - Ray Cromwell
LOL Ray I think we see different big pictures. I stated my point and you stated yours, clearly we are not going to see eye to eye. It would be interesting to re-visit this thread two to three years down the road. - Mona Nomura

@gregcollier my job hunt was over before I quit my old job. But my new job will be announced on Saturday on Gillmor Gang @stevegillmor
Awesome, that is nice to have things all lined up nicely like that. Of course, that's not due to just luck.. you're a very talented and smart guy with a crazy amount of industry connections and good will. You're a good example of career networking... very cool. Can't wait to hear what opportunity you landed! Cheers! <insert bottle of wine> - Susan Beebe

Official Gmail Blog: New in Labs: Add your location to your signature
"To try it, turn on Location in Signature from the Labs tab under Settings, then go to your signature preferences and check the box next to "Append your location to the signature." It'll use your public IP address to determine your location, so it may not always be that accurate. For example, if you're at Heathrow airport, IP detection may put you in Germany. If you want more accurate location detection, make sure your browser has a version of Gears that supports the location module. That way, Gears can make use of wi-fi access point signals to recognize that you're actually in London." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
This is pretty cool. I had wanted to add a feature to Gmail that would instead show the location of the people sending you email by geo-locating the source-IP in the "Received" headers (most non-Gmail services expose your computer's IP address). - Paul Buchheit
Doesn't seem to be working well in Linux and Comcast. Thinks I am in Sacramento not Los Altos. :-( Linux deperately needs better location based services. - Zaki Manian
I don't get why it's not using Google Latitude. If I manually set my location in Latitude, I don't want Gmail to say I'm somewhere completely different. - Tony Ruscoe from fftogo

@Ionut It's a Gmail Labs feature. That usually means it was done by one engineer in his/her 20% time rather than by a 'team.' - Adewale Oshineye
will be good to have the location in my GTalk Resource JID part. - Stoyan Zhekov
Will this work on the iPhone???? - Roberto Bonini
Roberto, I think Gmail Labs features are powered from the front-end, so it would only work on the iPhone if you could use the full Gmail AJAX interface (which I don't think is possible). - Tony Ruscoe

Good points but what about smaller companies? - Daniel Schildt
Struggling with this myself -- especially #10 (and btw Daniel most of what is there I think applies to small companies as well) - Brian Sullivan
Steve Rubel
Google Reader should have a ton of smarter features, here's why...
I love Google Reader, but given the number of users and feeds it has and the smarts of the team it should be able to: 1) Tell me what other items in my feeds link to the same story: help me manage my attention. 2) Support smart folders: Outlook and Newsgator have 'em. Gmail (via Quick Links) does too. Why not Reader? 3) Search unread items: you can search read items now, but not unread. I want to be able to say search for all items about X and mark them as read. What else? - Steve Rubel
Agree and I have to add that the social features suck currently: sharing by making chat contacts is @#%&*. - Nikos Anagnostou
I would like it to de-duplicate posts that somebody shares which I am already subscribed to. They should mention "this has been shared by ...." on one instnace of the post instead of showing me the post N number of times. - Brian Sloane
I like Reader, but the folks over at Feedly are doing much more to extend and improve the product than the folks at Google. - Robert Clockedile
Steve already mentioned it. But filtering items linking to the same story would be great. I'm getting annoyed when there is one story going around and every blog or website seems to write a post on it. But I know new other reader which is able to do this. Would be really a time saver. - Matthias Faller
Problem is, Rob, you need a plug in. - Steve Rubel from IM
Agreed. It won't work for everybody, but it's got an excellent (and growing) set of features, including beta Ubiquity integration. - Robert Clockedile from twhirl
...I know, I know...another plug in. - Robert Clockedile from twhirl
This is probably a silly question but is there a way to see a list of every reader-article that I've emailed out to either myself or friends?? - Will DeLuca
I love Google Reader. I would like to be able to choose my page view. When I click to read an article the page is adapted for mobile phone, I would like to view in HTML. I know of no way to change this. It would be nice to be able to choose. - Elizabeth
Google has a Digg competitor right in it's midst. I should be able to see most stared and most shared stories for the day, week, month etc. - Tim
The one thing I want with Google Reader is the ability to hide shared items from specific sources (source of that wishlist item? FF, of course). - Tamar Weinberg
I also love reader, but I would *love* to be able to setup rules to mark feeds with certain tags read once they become so old. For instance, I have feeds tagged as news and news-slow. Anything in news is stale after about 6 hours, anything in news-slow after about 2 days. I want to setup those preferences in Reader and have it mark those items as read for me, because going through yesterday's breaking news is a pain in the neck. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I like those suggestion Steve! Some of them are also applicable to feedly and the crowd we are catering. Thanks for kicking off this conversation! (Rob thanks for the support!) - Edwin Khodabakchian
I would love for Google Reader to flag duplicate news stories as well, Steve. - Liana Lehua
I wish they'd add Gtalk like in gmail. And adding friends/sharing has to be improved. I've also been unimpressed with search in greader. - Graham English
Merge Google Reader and Google Bookmarks ! - Stanislas Jourdan
Hmm, I wonder if Google Bookmarks is dying too. It was integrated with Notebook. - Steve Rubel from IM
My guess is that google has hired the founder of delicious to try to do something big and consistent around tagging and bookmarking. Something that could tie together Chrome, Android, Google Bookmarks, Google Reader. At least this is what I am hoping. The fragmentation is pretty painful for the end user. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Bookmarks sync is central to Chrome so somehow I think it will survive and become more social - Steve Rubel from IM
greader and gmail should merge. Both emails and feeds are easy to manage and access with the help of filters and labels. Email is a good tool to share with a wide variety of social networks. - xavier vespa
the shared items doesn't have the proper rss feed format. Can't use it elsewhere without it getting all monkeyed up.. Also a mark as unread option. Themes seems a direction it should soon incorporate. A piping feature like Yahoo Pipes offers. - Mike Skramstad
I love reader, but duplicates haven been driving me NUTS recently. I've recently started using Yahoo Pipes to combine some of of my feeds that commonly duplicate stories into one feed and remove duplicates. - Steve Boerner
Greader needs to be integrated with gmail. - Russ Jackson
one of my most desired options is to be able to sort my feeds by unread count, regardless of what folders they're in... so I get just a big list of all the feeds I'm subscribed to in order from feeds with 1 or 2 unread stories all the way to the feeds with 1000+ unread - I mentioned this to Edwin at Feedly and he seems keen to add into their product soon: http://getsatisfaction.com/feedly... - It's amazing to me that Google Reader doesn't offer that option already. - Nathan Chase
Getting the duplicate stories out will be a little tough - especially if the feed you subscribe to doesn't link back to their source - but it can definitely be done... would just have to do some regex/fuzzy logic-type querying of post title, content, and outbound links on the page to determine a percentage of similarity. You could then have a similarity threshold slider to adjust your "duplicate filter". - Nathan Chase
Are there perhaps other readers which do some of these? - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I use reader heaps, but I'd still love more features! - Will Higgins™
I'd like to save my searches in greader. - Wallace
I, too, would like a pony with my gReader. - David Chartier from BuddyFeed
I would NOT want gmail and greader combined, but better social features in the sidebar would be nice. Also improve tagging and let me set time based rules. I like yahoo pipes, though I'm not sure google would want to add something like it as a feature of reader, but I would like a pony. - John
I agree, the pony seems obvious, and it's certainly within Google's power to provide one for everyone. - Michael C. Harris
The ability to offer 3rd party features is exactly what the purpose of the soon_to_be_launched "Google reader API", as discussed by Niall Kennedy, is. His post: http://www.niallkennedy.com/blog... There is also an unofficial reverse engineering project here: http://code.google.com/p... - coldbrew
Duplicates within Reader are annoying. There is a script that helps with this but it's not great. It's certainly one problem with GR that needs looking at. - Kol Tregaskes
On my Google Reader wish list: 1. smart recommender system for news of personal relevance 2. incremental search of subscriptions in left column 3. incremental search of unread items in right column, both for All items and in each folder 4. rename folders 5. delete folders 6. easier moving of folders and feeds from one location to another (perhaps cut and paste) 7. seamless integration with Friendfeed. - Sean McBride
I'd like greader to be smart enough to know I already read a post - at the site, via an aggregator or ... No time for ponies - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
Plus could it stop letting me subscribe twice to the same feed :) - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
@mcwflint if you are a firefox user and install the feedly extension, you can configure feedly mini to mark articles as read in Google Reader when you visit websites directly. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Thanks. I'll try it on the non iPhone days - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
This one would be useful: "search for all items about X and mark them as read." I like the search feature in Google Reader. When I notice an interesting news about a subject, I immediately search for it to read what has been said about it in my other feeds. 2 or 3 articles are usually more than enough to know more about it, so it would be really useful to be able to mark all the others as read. - Mehdi Trimech
I'm loving Feedly so far. The fact that it is a plugin is very beneficial when you are generally surfing (not reading RSS), and you auto-discover the relevant conversations to join in on. Obviously Google will do something soon that will take me back to Reader, but for now I'm going to use Feedly - Paul R. Grant
Feedly's picture grid view is awesome, but the fact that I can't mark items as unread keeps me from using it fulltime. Some innovation in the way feeds are displayed would add a lot to Google Reader. Here's some idea - picture grid (ala feedly), timeline, contextual view (grouped by content like videos, links, etc) - Ashish Bogawat

Google Executives Face Jail Time for Italian Video - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com - http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009...
"Four executives of Google begin trial Tuesday in Milan on criminal charges of defamation and privacy violation in regard to a video posted on Google’s Italian site. The case involves a three-minute cellphone video, posted in 2006 to Google Video, in which four youths in Turin tease a boy with Down syndrome. After an Italian advocacy group complained that the video was objectionable, Google quickly removed it from the site. Prosecutors argue that the video should not have been published at all. The four executives charged were not involved directly in handling video from Italy. They include David Drummond, Google’s senior vice president and chief legal officer; George Reyes, its former chief financial officer; and Peter Fleischer, Google’s global privacy counsel, according to a Google spokesman. The fourth executive worked at Google Video in London, the spokesman said, declining to identify him." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
this is so dumb it's not even funny. And somewhat a shame for us (italians). - dario
this is a very very sad story. I wish new technologies would help putting a stop to teasing among kids, instead they tend to amplify the problem. - Davide D'Incau
Davide, I doubt that the technology caused the teasing. It more likely helped expose it, and therefore stop it to some extent. - Paul Buchheit
that's a dangerous precedent to set.. does this mean, should google lose the case that all sites wishing to operate within Italy must now hire staff to review submissions a la Revver? Because there isn't any other way of preventing this kinda content from being uploaded. - alphaxion
Hopefully they will use this as an Opportunity to Expose the Hypocrisy of the Catholic Church + All Religions!! ;)) Peace* - Billy Warhol
Let's see how many sites prevent Italy from sending content, if they are declared "guilty" in this case - Jemm
whats up with italy lately? not only is the political system almost 100% corrupt (mafia prodi in the south, sungod berlusconi in the north) but now they want to fuck up private businesses too (google, foreign foodshops). id say it time for a reboot - Chris Hofmann
Agree Chris, Italy is an ARSE backwards country run by arse backwards twits. - Will Higgins™
This makes the DMCA actually look good, with its Safe Harbor provision. (I know it's not copyright violation here, but the Safe Harbor provision should be a given for any medium with common carrier status.) - Manas Tungare
Thanks Will, mate. Let's start calling each other names, it'd do a lot of good, eh. - dario
Very good analogy Chris White. I hope that Google doesn't lose. It could set a terrible precedent. - Robert Felty
As a lover of Italy and things Italian, I am disappointed to see Italy go down this road. - Sean McBride
Italian politicians know nothing about internet and information technology. Laws are old, and new ones sucks. That's pretty much the problem, I think. - bnoise
bnoise: I think you could say that for the politicians of any country. - Davide D'Incau
Chris Ofmann: you seem to have a very superficial understanding of the situation in Italy. You are trusting stereotypes. Have you ever lived there or even visited? - Davide D'Incau
WTF? - Tyson Key
Paul: you have a very good point. In a sense this also put an end to it. But I wish it would not have to come to that point to be stopped. - Davide D'Incau
Manas Tungare: the applicable law already has a "safe harbor" provision. The problem is that the prosecutor believes Google doesn't qualify. - Gabe
davide your right my view is very narrow. i only spend around one month a year in north italy and dont get that much of political life, but my colleague in office who is a north italian tells me lots of things. well maybe he has an agenda...but thats the closest info i can get. pls tell me how it is in your point of view. - Chris Hofmann
This is ridiculous. that is all - Susan Beebe
Chris: the overall situation there is not that great. IMO, the root cause is found in decades of poor if not missing government with missing long term view of what the world would have become and how italy needed to change. But that has little to do with this specific case I am afraid. Also, I think that it is unfair to say that "they want to fuck up private businesses too" as you said in your comment just because of this case. These things happen everywhere in one form or another. - Davide D'Incau
As an Italian I am grateful for the deep analyses of the Italian situation. I think this twitter-level scolarship has already helped Italy. - Antonio Piccolboni

An interesting survey of upcoming and well-established Content Management Systems. And a warning, too: "Joomla is evil. That’s all there is too it. The only way to get the functionality you would ever really need beyond basic content management is to pay large sums of money for commercial modules. The community is huge in the worst possible way. There are a million modules for one problem and it is near impossible to find the right one. The interface is deplorable. None of the methods of content management make any sense, and it is obviously not meant to be user friendly considering the top dollar training offered for the system. If there were ever a CMS to avoid, this would be it." - Chris Baskind from Bookmarklet
I read it and thought "This guy is bitter." Then, the more I thought about it, the more I realized it's a really dumb and useless post, even ignoring the silly tirade against joomla. It sort of assumes that the people looking for a CMS have all the same skills (very little) and can be neatly divided into small sites and medium-to-large sites. Jejeune. - Don Schuetze

It feels kind of twitterish, that's not necesssarily a bad thing btw. - Mathieu Ayel
Actually I really like the box appearing on the right hand side with view/share/like. It unclutters the UI. Also like the fact that the items on the stream are separated by a line. It makes visually easier to digest the bites... - Mathieu Ayel
"perhaps I should do a post on "20% time" at some point..." Yes. Also an idea, license your blog under Creative Commons. - Philipp Lenssen

meh. I *does* feel Twitterish which is not a good thing in my book. Interesting as a FriendFeed To Go embed maybe. - AJ Kohn
feels a bit too web2.0, with the larger fonts and rounded look... it has so few controls, one wonders what to do with it... - Christopher Galtenberg
This would work very well if it used lists, etc. But for those of us with big followers' lists, we're pretty much toast. :-) - Louis Gray
I miss the view of the conversations. - Ontario Emperor
for twitter fans i guess... - Chris Hofmann
Yeah, it has a lot of problems with high volume posters. I actually had to temporarily unsubscribe from Scoble so that other people would show up as well :). This started off with me wondering if our realtime view (http://friendfeed.com/realtime) could have some kind of threading added in. It doesn't really work in a lot of cases, but by putting the code out there I'm hoping that it will inspire other people to come up with interesting new interfaces (and also show how easy it is to use our API). - Paul Buchheit
@Peter: A sticky post that remains at the top until I decide otherwise would be fantastic. I'd also like the ability to change the number of items I see per page. @Paul: Kudos on the realtime and for the API. - AJ Kohn
This API is absolutely simple and easy to use - but the styles interfere with my css and my poor coding is not up to sorting them out so that I can add the FF-UI to one of my pages rather than put it on a separate page. Heaps of fun to use. http://www.chrisloft.com/myFF... - Chris Loft
Ack!! It looks like Twitter!!! - Fa La La La Lindsay
not really diggin it to be honest. as an optional or additional way to view ff it could work for those who choose, but i think the one we have currently looks a little better - Cee Bee
Actually, looks kinda like Tumblr. - Yolanda
yeah - i prefer this. its instantly recodnisable as FF. the prototype looks more like Twitter. - Roberto Bonini
I will get used to whatever UI you put on top of FF, so I'm not to worried about what sites it does or doesn't look like. This approaches what I would really like for FF, which is to set a rate of information flow (maybe even have some sort of dial). There are already recommended friends, which would be smarter when I have time to waste than surfing "everyone", but I could dial it way back on busy days. This would also help with discovery because I could add people to my home feed if I like their stuff. - Clare Dibble
Been checking it out with my own name replacing yours..it's an entirely new perspective on FF. Could be good...not sure yet. Thanks for posting. - Josh Haley
I just realized that it looks surprisingly like a chi.mp site. I.e. http://sunla.mp/ - Jauder Ho
