Can you remind me again where to find those stats?
- Brian Johns
Brian, go to "Me" link (http://friendfeed.com/brianjo...) which defaults to the Feed tab. Look at the sidebar on the right, below Discussion.
- Micah
0.75 (926/1226) - still relatively new here
- mikepk
I only see my stats for the last week (17/14 = 1.21) Please tell me your 670 number is for more than just a week!
- Brian Johns
1.44 (566/391) for brianjohns (after week tally you should see a comma then 'all time' count - I can see it on your page)
- Micah
OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...
- Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.
- Cyrus Lendvay
FFers use FF with their own strategy or simply default tendencies. The ratio is an interesting snapshot of behaviour. Thanks for joining in everyone, hope more keep flowing in.
- Micah
from twhirl
0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.
- Bren
0.62 then again i have over 11,000 comments
- Cee Bee
1.23 (5287/4229) - I am put to shame by Cee Bee's participation, good grief!
- Lindsay
So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!
- Micah
.68 6986/10194 Someone wrote a great article on the comment-like ratio a few months ago. Search on FriendFeed is crashing on me... I'll try to get the link.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks Mitchell (btw, search crashing on me too - lots)
- Micah
1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah
12.23 (844 / 69 ) I guess I take my likes seriously ;)
- Chris Myles
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
Likes are down relative to comments, which matches my much lower frequency of liking. I'm a more selective liker than ever.
- Micah
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah
When I first saw this: 1.91 Sept 28: 1.94
- MiniMage
536 comments in the last month has me at .8736...still creeping toward 1.00
- Bren
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren
In 4 days it will be 1 year since my first recorded stat here. My comments/like were almost a 1:1 ratio then. Now comments are almost double likes for me.
- Micah
75,415 comments/1,286 likes = 58.64 - i wish the auto inserted comments didn't get counted... the true number is probably much much close ot my number of likes
- Chris Heath
1.97%. thanks again micah, this has been a great metric to measure my first year here on ff. As the year went (this being the first record of me being here that i've found): , 6.43%:1.25%:1.97%
- chaz2b
Chris, Bren, thank you. And chaz2b, thank you too - glad it's a special marker for you. :)
- Micah
63.58 (97,534/1,534) -- interesting that my last three digits are the same there, eh? (note, i already posted a month or two ago when i first saw this thread)
- Chris Heath
0.87 (3770/4312), so I'm either getting more commenty or less likey. [0.74 (1970/2667) was what I previously reported back in June]
- In Search of Gender
Last year my comments were around 7000 and likes around 2500, for a ratio of 2.80. I consciously chose to do more liking over the last year. As of today my comments number 10,782 and likes number 7,666, for a ratio of 1.41.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Jason, Stephen - cool. Thanks for keeping updated here. :)
- Micah
Okay, Micah. <----I had to resist the urge not to post that because I know it's going to up my comment count. ;)
- Jenny H
But how many of those primordial, high interest posts are still active. Uh huh. :)
- Micah
Thanks, Morton. BTW, when you posted in February, it was exactly 0.13 also.
- Micah
Jenny, resistance is futile; embrace the rising tide of comments.
- Micah
Comments are more difficult and time consuming than Likes. I'd be happy about a high comment:likes ratio except that many are surely imported from feeds, while every Like is manual.
- Mike Chelen
it has changed to 2.2256 now as Sep, 6 2010.Labor Day. :) I added the date for future references.
- ۳۰ مرغ Loves Y'ALLLLL
Two years later and my ratio has climbed from 3.4 to 4.675. I've got a lot to say, apparently.
- Kevin Fox
Funnily, I didn't notice until after leaving that comment that when I reported my stat in 2009 I also followed it up with "I've got stuff to say." I didn't say it was *new* stuff...

Stephen, because his weight was worth three people?
- Akiva
I am defeated. There is no retort. Akiva is the supreme victor for all time.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Ah, wait, victory has been snatched from defeat. CNN says his weight was a mere 325 pounds (http://www.cnn.com/2009...), so he was only worth the weight of two people. Superstition is again defeated, and science marches on, triumphant, but with much work to do.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Stephen, you don't know enough small people. =)
- Andrew C (✓)
Heh, Andrew -- but how many adult male celebrities can you name who weigh 108 or less?
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
I'm 20 and weigh 125, that's pretty close. Though I am no celebrity, Verne Troyer though.
- Jimminy IS Everybody
Stephen, I applaud your rational non-superstitious ways.
- George S.
Thanks George! For the others, so, remind me how the rule works? Celebrities die in threes, or weigh as much as three very very slim or young celebrities? Remind me again what agent enforces this rule?

When an unexpected death hits, we can all be at a loss for words. Sometimes our brains just reach for platitudes because we don't know what else to say. And then this superstition about death coming in threes spills out. I beg you, plead you -- avoid the silliness, avoid the superstition, and refrain from falling back on this moronic, unscientific, magic fairy dust concept of death coming in threes. Thank you.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
This is where I go... Dom DeLuise died?
- Louis Gray
Indeed, back in May. Might not have had quite the same level of coverage that MJ's passing had....
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
I didn't even know! Now, this one makes me sad.
- Jim #TeamMonique
RIP, Billy Mays (passed away today -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...). So, is it "celebrity deaths come in fours" now? Or, if two more are pending, please be sure to let me know the timeframe so we can make sure it's exactly two more and not one or three more.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Sorry you see it that way, Sean. I'm really not trying to say "I told you so" -- I'm trying to refute magic thinking and pseudoscientific poop. If you read the earlier thread, there are people posting who genuinely believe this superstition.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Ah, Sean, I see your "trifecta" post now (http://friendfeed.com/txsean...). So I can see how you took my update as an "I told you so." Well, sorry again to sound pretentious or smug, because I don't intend to come off that way. But if nothing else comes out of this, will you back down from your belief in the trifecta as anything beyond selective perception?
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
No. But someone who likes ghost stories wouldn't necessarily jump to talk about a celebrity's ghost right after that celebrity passed away. That would make me suspect they believed in ghosts.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo

It looks like people are solving it, so hopefully I'm not spoiling it: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Tab, Return. It's a variation of the Konami code (which nets you 30 lives in Contra) adapted for the keyboard. Figured out the first part from Paul's clue, but it took going through the minified Javascript to figure out a) that they didn't use the original Konami code like Google does and b) what they used for keyboard equivalents for "select" and "start."
- Mark Trapp
AWESOME! but didn't the code net you 99 lives?
- Keith - @tsudo
In Contra it was 30; not sure what it was in other Konami games.

hahah man that's intense. i guess they know their audience :)

I made a small journey through FF-sphere. Just to see what other people did theme-wise. Whether they had wanted to be original or liked it more the way it was. So I jumped from 1 account to another by going to the 1st person that had liked or commented on an entry. Does it say anything? Do you have a theme that's especially YOU?
No, I probably made a mistake here. FFundercats is not an open account. It should be another one with green toy thingies.

I hate custom themes. Seriously i do. It's *never* better than the original design.
- Nik
Luckily Nik, FF allows you to turn them off so you never have to see any custom themes.
- FFing Enigma
I love them, Nik, because that's the way you can add a personal touch to the design that's all ready-made. They don't have to be beautiful to me, as long as they say something about the person who is using it.

Mike, I'm in wilmington, topsail is cool and all, but the beaches are almost floridian when you get down to the lower half of cape fear... "Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose — but 16-year-old science fair contestant Daniel Burd made it happen in just three months. The Waterloo, Ontario high school junior figured that something must make plastic degrade, even if it does take millennia, and that something was probably bacteria. The Record reports that Burd mixed landfill dirt with yeast and tap water, then added ground plastic and let it stew. The plastic indeed decomposed more quickly than it would in nature; after experimenting with different temperatures and configurations, Burd isolated the microbial munchers. One came from the bacterial genus Pseudomonas, and the other from the genus Sphingomonas. Burd says this should be easy on an industrial scale: all that’s needed is a fermenter, a growth medium and plastic, and the bacteria themselves provide most of the energy by producing heat as they eat. The only waste is water and a bit of carbon dioxide."
- April Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
So why is carbon sequestration a good idea when it's all complicated and expensive, but bad when it involves burying plastic bags in landfills?
- Paul Buchheit
I think it's better to sequester carbon as dirt than as bags.
- Gabe
But if it's already in plastic bag form, why not leave it that way instead of turning it into CO2?
- Paul Buchheit
Paul: that's exactly what I've been thinking. Particularly since the City of Seattle no longer allows residents to sequester food based carbon in landfills and instead requires us to burn it into compost.
- Hayes Haugen
Dirt is useful because you can grow stuff in it. Most waste products are not so useful.
- Gabe
Yes, but the choice isn't between dirt and plastic -- it's between plastic and CO2.
- Paul Buchheit
I have to agree with Paul on this one: atmospheric CO2 is much more of a pressing concern at the moment than landfill space. Though I do admire the kid's scientific spirit.
- Louis Simoneau
It doesn't say what the process actually produces. They mention the feed material (plastic) and the waste material (water, CO2), but not the real products. I assumed it produced globs of carbon. Am I wrong?
- Gabe
Has nobody considered this for an artificial ecosystem? Compost your scraps for fertile soil, and compost your bags for the CO2 for the plants growing in it. Sure you'll need an airlock on your greenhouse (and an oxy mask whenever you enter it) but you'll have the best damned tomatoes on your street.
- Chris Charabaruk
You don't want to leave it in plastic form as it screws up the ocean large! Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... I hope they can use this to make something that would eat the plastic in the ocean rather than the sea life dying from it.
- Luke Kilpatrick
Since it said that the waste products were CO2 and water, I assumed there were also non-waste products. The good thing about landfills is that they can later be mined for all the great things that were too cheap to recycle.
- Gabe
Yeah, I think landfills have an unjustly bad reputation. When properly managed, they are a great way to deal with garbage that our technology can't yet efficiently recycle. (we're saving for the future!)
- Paul Buchheit
that's great news. now i can really finish my threat to all my damn *invincible* plastic bags! (waves fist)
- ed fry
The two biggest problems with landfill are the leachate seeping into groundwater (or contaminating local soil) and methane (a greenhouse gas). Even if you can mitigate those problems, they're difficult to eliminate entirely, making the land almost useless once it's full.
- Gabe
Gabe, not to minimize the problems, but I live right next to Shoreline Ampitheather in Mountain View, which is built on landfill is proof that the landfill land is hardly useless.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
It's not just landfills, though. Take the large floating trash gyre of the Pacific, and its effects in the ecosystem. So the tiny little plastic balls in water are fake food, and animals eat them, and then die in various ways, lowering populations and making species even more fragile. Landfill may be a good way if it's contained and monitored more closely, or CO2, in various areas- such...
- anna sauce
@anna at least he is coming up with a solution rather than just finding more things to complain about
- Chris Johnston
anna's right -- the problem is when the stuff ends up in the ocean. Landfills are a good way to keep the stuff out of the ocean.
- Gabe
Stop speculating and start experimenting!

Could be... The LX3 seems to be the P&S of choice for many DSLR users, but the E-P1 is getting a ton of positive press. The E-P1 really reminds me of a DSLR version of the LX3, actually. Its feature set, including the different film modes, is similar. That's part of the draw for me. :)
- Cheryl Jones
I was thinking the same thing Cheryl. Basically a LX3 that can swap out lens.
- Rodfather
Well, it's noticeably larger than the LX3 which works in that it's easier and more comfortable to operate. But if portability is your ultimate goal, you'll probably want to stick with the LX3 or its more recently rumored successor. Yes, there are a whole slew of lens adapters out or coming out for it but you lose AF and other info unless you stick with the regular or micro 4/3 lenses.
- ronin
@Rodfather: Yeah, the only thing I wish the LX3 had is a longer zoom. Doable with interchangeable lenses. :)
- Cheryl Jones
I'm keeping my eye on the Panasonic GH1 micro 4/3's. I was blown away at the video footage here: http://vimeo.com/4405518. It can record video at 1080p or even 720p @60p. Here's his first impression: http://philipbloom.co.uk/2009.... It's too expensive for me right now though.
- Rodfather
Yeah, when I saw the GH1 a while back I was quite interested in its video capability. But considering I already have the LX3 and D90 which can take take 720p video, I thought getting the GH1 would be unjustifiable. But the E-P1 is totally justifiable. And I totally want one, even if I have to wait for Christmas and beg my family to just give me money to put towards it. :)

from BuddyFeed
The AF is fine for most purposes. It's not the fastest AF but I haven't had it hunt much to obtain focus unless there simply wasn't enough contrast for it to work. I haven't noticed much shutter lag. Olympus apparently put in some effort to get it down to DSLR range and it works fine for me. Overall it feels a little faster than the LX3 but the LX3 wasn't a slowpoke to begin with.
- ronin
@Cecily: You were probably asking about the speed of the AF on the E-P1, but as far as the AF on the LX3, it's pretty fast in general, unless you put it into macro focusing mode. The LX3 has several different AF modes including a high-speed, 1-area mode for sports-type shooting. So it bodes well that the E-P1 is (or feels) faster than the LX3. The D90's focusing when in live mode is...

i would break the spaghetti into shorter lengths, i'm thinking it would work out better when it came time to eat. also, less pasta and more sausage that way.

I put cut up hog dogs in my macaroni and cheese all the time. This wouldn't be that much different, I guess, although with no sauce at all? Not sure.
- Jandy
This was my first time eating hot dogs and pasta. I've never had them in macaroni and cheese... I think a cheese sauce would go great, Jandy.

I MADE THESE THE OTHER DAY!!!! And yes, they are just as awesome and as fun as it looks. I got cheeky and put cheese on top, too. Om nom nom!

"Let's just put this out there: the Droid Incredible is the best Android device that you can purchase in America right now. It's better than the Droid, better than the Nexus One, and certainly beats the pants off of any previous generation handsets like the Eris, myTouch, or Cliq. It's not just a very, very good Android phone (though it is); it's also an excellent smartphone no matter how you cut it."

Just how much more awesome is it than the Nexus One? Cause if I was in the market for a new Android phone right now I would be leaning towards the N1 just because I suspect Google would be better about issuing OS updates for it.

"Hyderabadi Biryani is my ultimate recipe for a flavorful rice. The bite of protein, the aroma of spices, the tang from lime, sweetness of onions and touch of herbs make this biryani a top favorite of my family and guests in any daawat. Two kinds of Biryani are commonly made in hyderabad, "Kacchi" and "Pakki". "Kacchi" literally meaning raw is prepared by layering uncooked meat. The "Kacchi" Biryani ,usually prepared by expert "Bawarchis" ,requires a thick bottom vessel for meat to cook through without burning and rice has to be precisely half cooked while promptly making layers before rice cools. I prefer making the easier "Pakki" biryani in which cooked meat is layered with rice. The following recipe is of "Pakki" Biryani."

It's been probably about 8 months since I've made a biryani and I awoke craving this. Hope I can find my saffron, it's been way too long since I've used it.

This looks so good, I'm hungry. Your knowledge of hyderabadi biryani's is great too. Lots of other varieties of biryani out there. Don't forget to have this biryani with Mirchi ka salan (chillis melange) or bagaire baingan (aubergine stew) and raita (mixed yogurt) of course

Friend of mien was comparing biryani in India to pizza here. People get very passionate about it. "Hydrabad biryani sucks!" despite hearing about how great it was at work for about 1/2 hour the day before.
- anna sauce
I have only had biryani a few times, but I really liked it. Haven't tried cooking it myself, though.
- Ha3rvey #teamMonique
Aaman, that first part above is from the site, though I do know my biryanis since I started learning to cook them in '87. I always have mine with a raita and of course, the chilis because that's what I'm used to. I'm just more excited about being able to used vegetables and herbs from my garden for this.

I love Biryani! I don't think I'll try making it though. There are so many great Indian restaurants in my part of NJ. Thanks for sharing! :-)

Off to make the biryani. Using chiken (boring!) because I forgot to buy lamb.

Anika, my first job out of school was in Hyderabad - lived there for about 1.5 years and had the most amazing food possible. If I am ever in your part of the US, I hope I can come make some Hyd biryani and Salan for you.

One of the comments says it best: "You do not have freedom of speech in private businesses." That's the great thing about FREE enterprise and free markets: you're FREE to shop somewhere else. Try that with your soon-to-be-mandated government health care or your mail delivery, where if you don't like it, that's tough balls.
- Craig Eddy
not sure why Xbox is giving sexual orientation an option here. isn't the idea to shoot the other player? it might be best to have, "don't ask don't tell". I'm not sure players should know why a person is aiming a virtual gun at them. I'm not saying getting your kicks is wrong... but most of us don't sign up to get beaten up by bull queers.
- NoahDavidSimon
The PS3's PS Network's "Home" is FULL of lesbians.
- Will Higgins™
the question is more complicated then just sexual orientation. the question becomes more in terms of the nature of certain forms of sexual behavior. certainly we live in a free society where people should do what they want... but there is a certain sexuality to violence that we must address. on that matter is it appropriate at all for men and women to be shooting guns at each other? perhaps gender segregation is more complicated then our bodies. they don't let men and women play basketball together.
- NoahDavidSimon
it is a funny issue because it seems to really open up a sore spot. society simply can not address all the classifications of gender and sexuality. by simply identifying a character as straight or gay it limits the spectrum of psychological profiles. this is why our government should not create social contracts merely on who we like... but our civilization needs to create structures that reflect our architecture
- NoahDavidSimon
there is less an issue of gender orientation and more a dynamic of if a person is an objectifier or an objectified. is a person dominant or receiving. does a person get off on being shot at or not? being that this world is virtual... it doesn't even work because it is a waste... it is a sacrifice... a martyrdom of time we all choose. we are all there to be submissive to the machine. in...

Why put your sexual orientation in your profile? Politics, sex and religion have no place on a network where people just want to play games.
- Paul Grav
this assumes that it is just a game. I think politics, sex and religion have no place in the virtual world exactly because they do. it is an example of how transparency must be limited. we are all there to be submissive to the machine and therefor our hidden agendas might have symbolic implications that destroy the community. I'm not sure I would want to play this XBOX game.

The Code of Conduct is pretty explicit about this: "Don't create a gamertag or motto that other users may be offended by, this includes comments that look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate, or insinuate any of the following: profane words/phrases, sexually explicit language, sexual innuendo, hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, or religious slurs), illegal...

- NoahDavidSimon
I'm actually less interested in the legalities in this... because I am certain that MSFT opened themselves up to this and they only have themselves to blame. What I am interested in is the very sexual dynamic of virtual hunting and why it might be threatening to bring in identity into this. certainly the industry opened themselves up to something when they created Tomb Raider and Street...

- NoahDavidSimon
I'm certain there are no coded answers to these questions. we invite sexuality into the sphere. the virtual vixens are in fact very "lesbian" esque... and of course they also create a male hetero fetish. They are muscular and they are aggressive... the industry created this out of it's own desire to sell games. but in fact it is popular because it appeals to a desire for men to submit. to role play something that they can't in life.
- NoahDavidSimon
I believe that the user is very different the the character. you submit to being Lara Croft when you play her. you are not straight you are not a man. you are Lora Croft
- NoahDavidSimon
it is a matter of health to allow a certain level of libidinal desire that might be damaging to oneself. we as human beings might even be more healthy because we experiment with this other side. this duality. I'm not sure this should be coded as homosexual or transgender. if this element is dangerous to the game then it should not be an option.
- NoahDavidSimon
It's pretty obvious that most of the people commenting have very little familiarity with XBox Live. Microsoft has stated that putting anything that could be construed as sexual in nature in a user profile or gamer tag, puts a user's account in question. That being said, LIVE is hardly what I'd call a tolerant community, but microsoft would ban a gamertag like "StraightGamer" or "HeteroDude."
- Jon Anderson
yeah... I am not familiar with Live. the gender and preference is an option or no? the entire market for this is because the natural male instinct for hunting and fighting is taken away from society. people are repressed. if they invite the natural fetish into the sphere... then it is their fault
- NoahDavidSimon
There is no "sexual orientation preference" option, thank goodness
- Craig Eddy
oh... ok. that was not made clear in the piece. then I don't blame them for wanting to filter out those details. they shouldn't allow me to say I'm Jewish either btw. I question the very need for a user profile there. I'm not sure a VR shooting range where you don't know people is a place to make friends
- NoahDavidSimon
Most of the people I'm 'friends' with on LIVE I either know in real life or met through common interests sites/groups. Gaming with strangers can be -to say it nicely- effing terrible.
- Jon Anderson
wow... so "GayerGamer" was the dudes name. hypothetically if I were to change my name to say "HebrewHammer" that would probably be offensive as well? or say some dude whose name is "Christian"? There's a field in your profile called Bio, it's limited to 499 characters. You're prompted with "Enter some information about yourself.". If a fellow gamer has filled in their bio, I'd expect to see some generic stuff such as game preferences, location and maybe age.
- Paul Grav
You're not obliged to enter your real name. So if you're real name is "I hate christians" then there's no problem, because you're not obliged to enter it. You are obliged to enter a gamertag, which can be anything you like, expect for what MS judges to be offensive or controversial.
- Paul Grav
...especially as XB360 is populated by kids insisting on calling each other "fag" at every opportunity. She should call her lawyers.
- Chris Nixon
Chris the mere fact that there is bigotry does not mean you change the rules without a lot of thought. I wonder how much thought went into this. did they pull it right away; did they have a debate about the many ramifications. to me it isn't so much if the name is right or wrong... because I think there is a lot of context.
- NoahDavidSimon
There was no thought. Can you imagine the number of people that have questionable gamertags or bios? This one was a no-brainer.
- Paul Grav
I can't even understand how this was even contemplated. Idiotic complaints belong in the bin not matter how many there are. At the moment in the UK on a BBC kids TV channel, there is a presenter who has one arm cut off at the elbow. There have been hundreds of complaints from parents claiming this scares their kids. It is an idiotic fascist complaint, and the BBC rightly ignore them.
- Chris Nixon
Please don't take this the wrong way. I've been on x-box live since it came out. If you play any FPS like CoD you know the "high" caliber of some of the people you play with. There are a lot of juvenile delinquents on there. I can't count how many people I have muted and/or reported. There's no real bio on there where you can broadcast your sexual orientation so she chose to put that...

there is that context that I was contemplating. like the cartoon in Rupert Murdoch's newspaper that people feel is racist and Lou Dobbs on CNN says isn't... the question in the end is the context. and you can see obviously this girl is playing at people's inner demons and fears... and yes even bigotry. it was meant to provoke... and in doing so... for right or wrong about the ideal name being sexual or non.. should not be allowed.
- NoahDavidSimon
@Jason. How does MS know whether she is or isn't a lesbian? Anyone can put that in their profile. I think MS were right to take some sort of action.
- Paul Grav
I take it back about MSFT being to blame. they did the right thing. I thought they were creating facebook profiles on XBox and punishing people for saying they were gay. virtual fire ranges are no place to test to see if the boundaries of our society are fair. We know they aren't. It is a given.

Photo Theme #2 Feedback: Reflections - I decided to enter a few photographs into theme competitions. I'm working on JPG mag's themes and I need to choose just one. Thank you Glen and Kevin!! Kevin, I adore my penguins, but I keep asking myself if they are right for the photography magazine or if one of the others is more likely to be voted for? Thoughts?

2 and 6 are my favorites. 6 really blows me away; the colors are just amazing; so many different shades of white! I would love to see #6 in high resolution.
- Jeanette Bosman
Wow, these are fantastic. But I agree with Glen, if it's reflection you're going for then 2 or 5 would be the most interesting and reflective ones. 6 is cute but not enough reflection. Between 2 or 5 though I'd go with 2. 5 looks a little too washed out comparatively in my eyes.
- ronin
Glen, I've been thinking that about #4. On #3 I'm on the fence as even just the colors reflect creating a shape that spreads in both directions. But the others might be better anyway. I think I might be leaning towards #5 but I'm just not sure.
- Rachel Lea Fox
#4 struck me as a beautiful place for reflection as well as a portrayal of reflection!
- Anne Bouey
Hmmmm, Ya, I didn't really consider the "reflection" part as much. From that perspective, 2 is the strongest. Tho if you cropped the penguin photo more tightly, it might bring out the penguin reflections more. But it might not be as strong of a photo.

@federico condivido fino ad un certo punto. E' una visione occidentale che non condivido quella del cambiare tutto cancellando il passato. Yes, I do like Chianti. I like full-bodied, rich reds from Spain and Italy mainly. I'm not a big fan of white grapes other than Gewurztraminer and I absolutely hate, hate, hate Chardonnay... except for Champagne.

hi Mark!......may I ask why you don't like so chardonnay?
- keiko-san
I find Chardonnay tastes salty and meaty; a little like ham. Now, I like eating ham but drinking it is just not pleasant at all.
