I know that he probably will not do it. I was nice. I just don't want to unsubscribe from him. He is an interesting person. I just don't want to hear all his political ideas on twitter. - Jim Williams
Chris, I thought you would know that female spit has magical properties. Grooming, healing wounds, cleaning faces etc. There is almost nothing it can't do. - Ryan Petty
i gotta say, although I joined & I think it could be a great community - i really don't like the "Prove that your my friend" bullshit... - Zee from WeDoCreative
going to sound a little silly, but Gnomedex was the least Geeky conference I've been to in the US (I do PR/ Marketing conferences as a speaker in Australia, hence the exception). Geek is a redundant word, you proved that at Gnomedex - Duncan Riley
wasn't too keen on ning myself, waaay too many different things to sign up to now adays, and I'm too paranoid to trust things such as openID! I have users that struggle with more than 1 username and password.. I really don't know how they survive in the wider net and they'd DIE of shock with the number of accounts I have to put up with >.< - alphaxion
Congrats, Mike, Derek, and the rest of Picasa team. This will get "oooooh"s and "aaaaah"s. - Amir Gharaat
Having used both for some time, and even though I'm generally a Google Fan, I much prefer Flickr to Picasa - Ian May
This could be really cool for family photos. My choice of flickr uploads is really different and wouldn't benefit so much from facial recognition, but the weekly family blog post type photos would be cool to have all linked up by person. - Jeremy Hall
it would be great if somehow there was universal data that could pass between photo sites (picasa and flickr at minimum) to sync the tagging of photos; i use different sites for different purposes, and generally only have full albums on my desktop... - Kevin
via twhirl
wow, that's cool! I've been waiting for the next Picasa upgrade... - Adam Zuercher
I have tried and it seems to work quite well. Not perfect but very quick to use and I assume ti will be better with more photos. I am currently switching from Zooomr to Flickr (duplicating at this stage) to try out but with Picassa improving, Protrade offering new stuff and Scoble dropping hints about a new service, how do you chose which is best when they all offer slightly different features. - CJPhoto
It really is a Google World we're living in! - David Ward
“If John McCain is elected in November, I'm moving to Canada, and I plan on sleeping on Susan Sarandon's couch while Tim Robbins, Alec Baldwin and I start a punk band.”
The burning question is: What would the name of the punk band be? - Aden
I doubt McCain can win either. And when Obama wins, I won't whine or make false promises to move out of the country, even though he's a slightly worse choice than McCain. - Charles LePage
via fftogo
Better yet, lets start a Rock Band punk band. - Mathew Ballard
The Canada move has crossed my mind a number of times over the past few years. Seriously. Nova Scotia is nice and not too far away (I'm in NH). And Canadians don't seem to make a habit out of invading other countries. *shrugs* - Joanmarie
Well if Barack Obama is elected I'm moving to Canada. - Jim Williams
Jim, please let us know where we can forward your mail. :) - Ruth Ferguson
To those who think McCain will lose no he won't we just must mobilize and explain how wrong Obama would be. - Cecil Sandus
Looks like we get new citizens no matter who wins in November. Don't forget, mortgages are not tax deductible here -- but lottery winnings are tax free. Sweet deal eh? - David Muir
McCain will win after everyone figures out that Obama is a socialist. - Barbara Davis
I don't really want Obama or McCain to win, so where does that leave me? But I think it will be interesting to see who Obama really is and we won't know that until/if he gets elected. He's kind of like a chameleon. - JMakesAwesomeSauce
i dont care who wins, as long as we get full frontal nudity at some point. - THAT ONE grizzled
if John McCain wins, you can all move in with me! - Lauren P
Canada really rocks. I love living here. Toronto is sweet since your into big cities. - Keke
I would never move to Canada. I heard the toilets flush the opposite way, that would just freak me out. Also, their houses have no doors. It's true. - Pete Delucchi
I'm all aboot Canada. Soory if you don't appreciate it, eh? - Steve Isaacs
the last photo in the series offers some contrast. another great 'big picture' post. - eric mortensen
Awesome shots. In the crazy world of internet, I first saw these pictures from the Czech republic at widelec.org before finally seeing the Boston.com website. - Mitchell Tsai
You fail to understand my qualm, Jamie - I take no issue with app developers who charge for their wares, it's when they release an app for free to boost ratings / rankings, then switch to a paid version and land themselves in the top X list instantaneously. It's just as janky when the App Store launched and developers were renaming their apps to appear at the top of the list. It's just *BAD MARKETING* that pisses me off. - l0ckergn0me
Well, good marketing, because it works. But bad ethics. It's basically figuring out a way to lie without actually doing it. Anyway, it's manipulating their way to higher rankings. - WazNeeni
Chris, could you share the app names? - Akshay Dodeja
What you're pointing out is that these "Top" lists are too simple to be useful to you in a highly competitive environment. Any system is going to be gamed. Think about it: my guess is the tallies are going to be biased towards early developers too. A good system will have to avoid this too. - Loren Heiny
Loren...how 'bout Sales (not d/l's) per Month. That would wipe out both of those issues. - WazNeeni
I noticed an app or two doing the same thing. I immediately uninstalled their app. I don't support such gimmicks. - Corvida
I haven't paid for an app yet on my iPod touch. Figured I'd let the market mature a bit. - Bill Sodeman
But you are assuming that THAT is the SOLE reason they switched to paid. How do you know? Maybe the app got popular, and they thought, I could make some money from this instead of giving it away. Should they have instead waited until it was no longer popular, off the Top list, and THEN switched it to paid? :P - Andru Edwards
Andru, c'mon - even you're not so naive to believe that "Crazy Lighter" was worth free two days ago, with other ezone apps going for .99, then suddenly ezone saw the light (no pun intended) and raised the price right at the moment it could outseat the #1 paid app? That's a slimy tactic. - l0ckergn0me
He's gotcha there, Christopher. Maybe they wanted to test the waters to see if *anyone* would want it, with the plan of being a paid app the whole time? - WazNeeni
I dont misunderstand your qualm Chris. I just don't think its valid. Is it taking advantage of a loop hole in the AppStore? Sure. Is it *wrong* to do so? Hell no. Its great marketing and a chance for the dev to make money on his app. Are you honestly saying you would not take advantage if the same situation applied to you? Its effectively SEO what is taking place here. And something as trivial as changing the price of an app is entirely within his rights as the developer. Blame the game, not the player. - Jamie
Jamie: "Is it *wrong* to do so? Hell no." Are you ethically bankrupt? Clearly , no need to answer. No one is saying that he shouldn't make money on his app. Of course he should. I feel like I'm watching a presidential campaign ad that is taking what someone said and spinning it.The bottom line is he's taking advantage of a loophole and gaming the system. Certainly not illegal, but certainly not ethical. Apple should close this loophole by resetting the counter or creating a new counter for paid downloads. - Greg
I agree with you completely .. business or not .. it's just plain shady - Todd Loren Sinclair
@Jamie @Andru @WazNeeni - Looks like Apple agrees with me. The Top 100 list doesn't include "Crazy Lighter" anymore. It must've been removed at some point this afternoon. Hopefully, they've set it up so that when an app goes from free to paid (or vice versa), it also loses its rankings / ratings for that app type. - l0ckergn0me
Bravo Apple. Ethical business practices prevail in spite of those who live off the scraps. - Greg
It seems to be fixed for me. (Canadian iTunes store) - Granteezy
@Chris: sometimes you are birlliant, sometimes you're a donut - this is one of those occasions. - Dennis Howlett
via twhirl
@Chris not quite - I admitted its a loophole which Apple needed to close. But thats a separate issue. What I am arguing is that a developer taking advantage of that loophole by simple changing the price of *his* app really isnt that big of a deal. Hes just trying to make money. And to be labelled slimy and talking about shame is a bit over the top. @Greg - I can do without the character judgement from yourself thanks. - Jamie
@Jamie if you base your arguments on ethical issues and then give your opinion you can't then take my ability to offer my opinion off the table. Anyway...on we go. - Greg
Excuse me - but isn't this what Web 2.0 is BUILT on? Release something for free, get traction, user base and good will then transition to a paid model? - Soulhuntre
@ Greg you are completely missing the point. Lets just say that Apple fail to close the loophole; you are effectively saying that a developer can't ever raise the price of his product without being labelled slimy. If by not supporting that notion, that makes me "ethically bankrupt", then so be it. But wow @ folks thinking its that serious. There's much more to worry about in the world of 'gaming' web services than one devs right to adjust the pricing of his very own product. - Jamie
Just to clarify, I am talking in general, not specifics. If this ezone company is taking advantage of it specifically for that purpose, sure, I am against that. I am just saying, I don't see anything wrong with RANDOM COMPANY putting out a free app, then seeing it shoot to, say, #3 free app, and then saying - wait, I can charge $2 for this and can be making a killing. So they do. I am all for it. Now, if a company is doing it JUST to be at the top of the paid apps list, I find that to be dicey. - Andru Edwards
Hi Simon from ezone here. For the record, we're not trying to 'game' the system and land the #1 paid spot (but of course we aren't complaining!). If/when Apple plugs the loophole we will continue to give away all our apps for free for the first couple days to build awareness and then revert to paid. We've never been featured in itune's picks, new, hot, etc., and offering free apps is a way to get heard above the noise. How about supporting us small devs rather than labelling us unethical slimeballs. - Simon Edis
More on this here. http://www.doipod.com/ipod/200... Seems there are pretty consistent feelings about the nature of this approach to publicity. - Greg
I agree Chris, it is stupid to allow a company to so easily manipulate the rankings. - Andrew Fielding
Awesome. TinEye is an image search engine built by Idée currently in private beta. Give it an image and it will tell you where the image appears on the web. - Mitchell Tsai
Wow. It took you that long Robert. You early adopter you. Did someone squat your name on identi.ca or did you get @scobleizer? - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I was an early adopter of Twhirl, but when Twitter had all of its problems I moved away from clients and just used the Web page. - Robert Scoble
why does twhirl keep notifying me of the same content - Mike Szczygiel
via twhirl
All the identi.ca talk is really starting to wear away on my nerves. Identi.ca is just one instance of laconi.ca, and as such is just another single point of failure just like Twitter. In fact, it's probably no more stable than Twitter was two years ago. All these tools pointing at identi.ca totally miss the fact that the real advantage of laconi.ca, the open source service, can run on many other servers and not just identi.ca. However, there's no way tools like Twhirl can support all laconi.ca instances. - Ken Sheppardson
twihrl gives me nothing but problems. I can't use my scrollwheel because it scrolls two full pages with each click, on every PC i've used it on, regardless of configuration. It's a memory hog for the little it does, and everytime I click a link, it opens the page twice. I' ve tried reinstalling it to no avail, anyone else having these problems? - Richard Lawler
via twhirl
Is there any way to easily add all twitter friends in identi.ca? - Mike Hussein Cohen
via twhirl
Yeah. I use it for the "other" services I use, and also when I have my Macbook hooked up to my 56" HD set, but I really wish they would consolidate the 4 windows into single window with multiple tabs. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Ken: personally it's just another point to communicate with you other than Twitter. Our system is becoming stronger thanks to these. Now we have FF, Twitter, and Identi.ca and Plurk. Four ways. Will all four systems go down at the same time? Doubtful. - Robert Scoble
@mike3K ah, the holy grail of data portability! when is open mesh arriving! - The Pageman
I'd kill for them to add an RSS reader into it. - Bradley McSpinn
Why not just use Ping.fm and Gtalk as a client? - Rutger Blom
I like Twhirl. They keep adding support for other clients. - Jim Williams
twhirl def needs an rss reader and a way to combine account windows into one - Mike Szczygiel

I used to like Twhirl but now I use TweetDeck. It is amazing and its a great way to manage your Twitter feeds. You should give it a try. A new version is about to come out with notifications if that is one of the things you are looking for. Im testing it right now and it works really well. - pcnerd37
I moved from Twhirl to TweeterDeck and then to FriendFeed and Identi.ca back to FF. - Scot Duke
Why is it that, when I try to update Twhirl, Firefox just wants me to download an .air file? When I click the .air file, nothing happens. - Bradley McSpinn
Robert: I think you mentioned that on GG yesterday... wanted to respond then :-) Relying on four+ independent services (or four devices for that matter ;-) might work for a select few, but for this stuff to move beyond the "twitterati" some service needs to provide utility-like reliability. "Oh, my phone is broken today, I'll just write a letter" won't be acceptable to the main stream. A true open source twitter-like cloud could do that. Identi.ca can't, at least not any time soon. - Ken Sheppardson
seconding and thirding @Mike Szczygiel: "twhirl def needs...a way to combine account windows into one" - Derrick Burns
Twhirl's creators have promised, very soon, some other than multiple floating windows. But I don't get the popularity of TweetDeck. I found the interface overly rigid and far less usable. Twhirl is what I'm sticking with -- and I keep notifications off. (Notifications, beyond direct messages or even replies, seem like a time suck to me.) - Peter Kirn
via twhirl
@Peter Kirn: not to mention that the incessant 'bing!' on every tweet is enough to make you schizophrenic. - Derrick Burns
Scoble just said shiznit. This is now tagged as BEST TWEET EVAR. - Rob Diana
But are you going to come up with a Twhirl gang sign to complement the FriendFeed gang sign? Fotwizzle. - Ontario Emperor
using post-to-any-service clients is like suffering from disorganized schizophrenia at a block party. it just ain't fun for all participants - thomas marban
via Alert Thingy
identi.ca feels like a step backwards from FF. - Thomas Hawk
I also like Twhirl. It's simple and yet elegant. - imabonehead
@Thomas I think Identica (could be) a good independant service alongside FF, depending on how they grow their service of course. - Roger Kondrat
Its got the twitter disease. Thats why you should just come on over to friendfeed. we are talking about you here anyway :-) - Richard Binhammer
Heh good grief. While Second Life might have its goofier moments, my avatar looks like a high resolution crackhead with tats and a railgun. But hey, I guess the coverflow/Mii thing is cute. For um, for. Shit, I got nothin. - Eric Rice

Was there something wrong with the old dashboard? - Lindsey Smith
Lindsey, depends who you ask. I think it was kinda dated and kludgey, but heh, I'd have settled for the addition of a browser. - Eric Rice
It does look nice - any video of a demo, Eric? - l0ckergn0me
I like the new look, but I can tell from the way they held the conference that the change in style was to mainly appeal to the more "casual" gamers, while at the same time provide a strong sense of "teams" that have become more popular to the "hardcore" set of gamers. I also think the avatar idea came from the Live teams desire to have players attached to a character more than just a gamertag/nickname - Sean Dunn
Chris, looks like the engadget screens are it.. I'll scour around. I have PS3 work to do tonight :/ - Eric Rice
I do gotta say tho, the cartoony thing... Couldn't we have an open avatar standard (lol standards) http://farm4.static.flickr.com... That's generally my avatar I use (need to post that to both console nets. - Eric Rice
Yeah the current dashboard sucks. Spent 5 mins trying to figure out how to watch a downloaded movie the other night. I consider myself pretty bright, but Microsoft proved me wrong! - Aaron Brazell
@Aaron sorry about that; hope the update works better for you. - Bruce Williams

I installed a few on my iPhone, first couple times I tried it didn't work, but now it's been working fine. I think the first days of iphone3g saw a lot of apple services not faring so well, but things seem to be going well now. - felix
It takes a long time. Maybe you're impatient. - Sam Pullara
Yeah - that's a great new feature - and mimics password field behavior on lots of platforms. Also - an asterisk probably doesn't count as encryption so much as, perhaps, obfuscation. :) - David Geller
Agreed with Chris and Dave - this is intentional to make password entry easier. Personally I always just use the visual feedback of the keyboard bubbles to ensure accurate entry, but every little bit helps on a field where precision is required. - Sparky
Nevertheless, it doesn't conform to what the SDK says is supposed to happen.... - Mitch Ratcliffe
