"Ubuntu proper may be a bit slow on the Eee, but one of the *buntu alternatives may work well for you. I love both Xubuntu (Xfce) and Lubuntu (LXDE); Lubuntu is super lightweight and would probably run the fastest, where Xubuntu is a but more feature-rich out of the box."
