You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.
Thanks to Kevin for doing a great design for what turned out to be a more complex set of UI options than we had originally anticipated, and thanks to Tudor for implementing the email backend.
- Bret Taylor
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email.
- Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included?
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
this is killer, the random influx of email during the day was kinda getting fail-ish. I love the daily digest.
- Drew Lucas
Very cool! Any way to get archives of previous months? (especially helpful for those of us who leave the internet for weeks at a time...)
- Mitchell Tsai
Just curious - at what time of the day will we get these emails ? Midnight US-Time, or will it respect our timezones ?
- Ahsan Ali
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry!
- Bret Taylor
But what exactly is "Best"? Is it anything that has a certain number of likes/comments?
- Laura Norvig
@Bret LOL THAT WAS MY PROJECT! I will release it tomorrow. But you've also did it and killed my friendfeed application **sigh** But mine has multi-reporting weekly-daily-monthly at the same time and adjustable entry count!
- Alp
@Bret please consolidate me or I won't code new apps with you api! :-)
- Alp
Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists)
- Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :)
- Paul Kinlan
Bret: While Twitter struggle to keep their fail whale under control, you guys are developing stuff like this. Amazing - Thanks!
- Jim Connolly
awesome feature, this will be highly useful for my corporate group ideas / content sharing; projects, etc.... THANK YOU :)
- Susan Beebe
Great work. I especially like that it works on lists too.
- Meryn Stol
my inbox might say different, but I like that :-)
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.
- Adam Lasnik
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys
- (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys!
- Mitchell Tsai
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).
- Kol Tregaskes
does anyone know of a web service that can do this? (I'm thinking weekly email updates of my favorite feeds/people) I don't think there's anything like friendfeed ..
- Friendfeed's Francisco
This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup in a TARDIS
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...

Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- pb:
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]

even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Iphigenie
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- SteVe C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- The original Kevin
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)

Seriously folks, I think we've found a great new service. I hope you all at least give it a fair chance (when you get your invite of course). It's very slick, it's very FriendFeed-friendly (very similar to our beloved FF) and has users, lots of them and they are all interacting with each other and posting on all sorts of topics.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yeah, but all I see is the same useless noise (crap) wrapped in a new candy wrapper. Slightly better features is fine, but unless it exponentially improves what has been said, it's just pixie dust on a dog turd
- Johnny
I was impressed how well the hanging out feature worked.
- Mike Nencetti
Waiting for Google to honour the invite i was sent.... grrrr
- Roberto Bonini
I'm waiting for importing and exporting. And for the folks with a terrible combination of ADHD and OCD to get sick of it and leave, or to calm the hell down.
- Victor Ganata
from iPhone
Johnny, I see no noise. I use Google+'s circles (which are just FriendFeed-like friends lists).
- Kol Tregaskes
Victor, I can't see that happening. It's all native and I think Google will stick to that. Possibly a good thing as it avoids everything simply importing their tweets, leaving and not using the service. You actually have to be active on Google+.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol. I have lists/circles set up too. I just see the same stuff there that I do here. And I'm not going to do all the work for no real benefit. And they better do something about import cause if it's just Google native, i don't want it. It has to be a central hub, not a closed garden
- Johnny
from iPhone
I can't wait to get an invite! It's about time someone else gave Facebook a run for their money, they have become complacent and arrogant and have had no competition up until now.
- Technogran
You know, perhaps you guys are right and should just stay over here( please). Victor, make sure you give your customary block when you there. Jesus.
- Joe
from YouFeed
The feature missing is the ability to import from any random site (using either custom importers or RSS/Atom). Without that, it's just another gated-garden (not quite a walled-garden, but G+ wants you to create your content on G+ it seems). I create content all over the internet, not just one one site.
- Andy Bakun
FF's import feature is nice but when I look back on the best conversations I've had at FF, they're the ones that started on FF (or the bookmarklet), not the ones imported from Twitter/Tumblr/Flickr/Reader/etc. The imported items seem to generate less interesting conversations.
- Amit Patel
One major flaw is that not even Google Reader (which is a major source of interesting conversations for me) imports into Google+, which just seems absurd. I don't see the benefit of moving from Facebook to Google+ if it's going to be more of a silo than Facebook is.
- Victor Ganata
But they'll definitely import from Buzz some time, no? And Buzz does import from whatever else..
- Ruchira S. Datta
I hope so. The potential for Google to tightly integrate all its products seems like it would be a huge selling point, but the beta certainly isn't there yet. Google+ doesn't even have search!
- Victor Ganata
Honestly, it feels like a real beta. Not a Google beta where they just leave the label on, but a real, not-ready-for-prime-time beta.
- Alex Scrivener
+1 Alex... they're actively seeking feedback and releasing changes as they code them
- Jorge Escobar
Very much agree Victor. Google reader is a big source of interesting conversations. I'm much less likely to read something in GR and then manually go to G+ and post a link. The browser note facility isn't perfect, but it's simple and immediate.
- Todd Hoff
I have a feeling Google+ is going to have search. Intersecting search with circles may be tricky and has to be done perfectly...
- Ruchira S. Datta
I think it's too early to say "it doesn't have this and that and therefore it's of no interest." The question is are they committed enough to G+ to improve it and add some of these requested features (which they didn't do with Buzz). The things they've done so far they've done quite well, which is promising. A better share mechanism from GReader and other sites would be great (could be...

- Jandy
Oh, Google+ is certainly compelling. But is it going to make me abandon Facebook/Twitter/Friendfeed given its current feature set? Most definitely no. The devs seem to be way more responsive to suggestions compared to Buzz, but I honestly can't remember a major Google product that wasn't almost completely perfect out-of-the-box. I supposed I've been spoiled because of their previous misuse of the term "beta" :)
- Victor Ganata
G+ is very good, but I still find myself comparing it to FF. And while dev here has stalled for the last year. It just goes to show you how strong they were before that both FB & G+ are emulating large portions of FF's environment.
- Bluesun 2600
FF (like Soylent Green) is actually made of people. Just add your FF into an FF circle and pretend it's the new beta. Re: Twitter, NOVWL.
- Goran Zec
I still find FF's UI (Helvetica theme w/ adblocked banner) superior to anything. And the real time stream is crazy impressive years later. And it seems bug free and the search works these last few months. But material up to 2009. no longer seems accessible through search, there is no archive, animated gifs should work from anyplace and not just soup.io and new social services are not being added. It's decaying gracefully thanks to good engineering, but it's dead nonetheless.
- Goran Zec
Wow you were moving pretty good. How does it turn?
- Harvey Johnson
.................. That.............. Is............... AWESOME!!!

Is this what they call re-inventing the wheel? Apart from the 'front' (steer) wheel being at the back, this design/concept has been a round for a very long time.
- Kevin J Hatton
Kevin, the Terratrike, a tadpole-type (the other one is "delta") tricycle steers in the front (Ackerman steering), not in the back, only Leo hasn't figured out yet how to adjust it properly and screw down the handlebars. This model is too small for him, as he'll soon be bound to discover, but there are other brands on the market, of bigger size and far better quality.
- ianf ⌘
Thanks for the info ianf⌘, it is good to know that this wasn't truly representative of this new design.
- Kevin J Hatton
Well, Leo's mouth-agape reaction was typical, representative of the initial awe one feels while riding a recumbent trike. It's like being in the fairground "radio cars" of the fifties. But he's quite mistaken that he is "very low to the ground." This is average height for such trikes, with eyes on the same level as in fast convertibles; there are competition trikes with 20 degree seat...

It is NOT too small for him and in fact was custom sized for him from the factory. He rides it daily and loves it.

So it's posted as usual on the thread but also goes into the 'Direct messages' inbox or something similar. Kinda like saying, 'Hey I'd like you to see this comment' or it could act as a reply to that person. It might help with tracking 'replies' in comments? #betakoltag-sg-postscomments
- Kol Tregaskes
This shouldn't be an option, but by-default behavior: click the comment icon, comment dialog will open [EDIT: in context beneath the commented item, but end up] last in the tree with first word an @commentUserName element made into a hyperlink leading back to the comment one responds to.
- ianf ⌘
Yep something like that would be the plan. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I had to amend my previous contribution, because, with long comment threads, it becomes impossible to respond in context. So the reply-box might as well appear after the commented item, but get posted at the end of comments (with leading @link inside back to the argued point). Followed by, as has been suggested elsewhere, a second, trailing copy of the disposition links now found only...

I'm sorry but this is unbelievable:) I'll give credit to the artist upon more convincing proof! The photogenic look of the tiger and lion really helps the artist's case though:)

I'm really happy everyone liked these. They're my most liked entry to date, Thanks! There also seems to be some question about whether these are actually Pencil Drawings.I can assure you that they are. When I get home, I should have the links. I have more drawings, too.

from fftogo
Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks!
- Michael Fidler
Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo.
- Chris Loft
These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them?
- Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-)
- Michael Fidler
Cut the bullshit! :) Photos are very good.
- Burçak Çubukçu
I draw alot in pencil, but they are amazing, the best for me is the girl, that is the most photo-like one. :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I agree Rob, the girl is amazing. My favorite by far! Wait until you see it close up! It's really had to tell, even up close!
- Michael Fidler
Burçak Çubukçu If these were photographs, they would be very good. As Pencil Drawings,(which they are), they're amazing.
- Michael Fidler
@Burçak Çubukçu I can't tell if your serious now or just kidding around. I hope your just having fun! If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! http://ff.im/1BJh5 BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-)

@Michael: try deviantART, not Picasa, to submit your artworks

LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that.

nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :)

I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - http://www.flickzzz.com/2009...
- Michael Fidler
Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set.

- Kol Tregaskes
Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ...
- Linda Zeek-Bobinski
Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package.
- The Wimp
A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store,
- Melanie Reed
Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice...

I'm amazed that people are still posting these photographs of animals and calling them pencil drawings. This is at least the third case I can remember (and there are probably more) of this happening. The myth about them being drawings was debunked long ago. It's also funny that whenever they get posted the person posting them doesn't make it clear that they aren't the artist, exactly as you have done.
- canadianmaple09
@canadianmaple09 I posted these back in March, 2009 when I was beginning to use FF regularly. I ran them through TinEye hoping to find their source, but it returned no results. When I ran through again yesterday, TinEye returned over four pages of results. If I had it to do over again, would I? Yes
- Michael Fidler
The people you refer do don't join "just to slam" someone, they are concerned members of the online art community that want to see real art appreciated and fake art or photos being passed off as drawings revealed for what they really are. Artists such as Brian Duey, Armin Mersmann, Paul Lung, Zindy Nielsen, and many others do not receive the appreciation they deserve because of scams like this.
- canadianmaple09
canadianmaple09, the worthiness of your motives notwithstanding (and they are worthy, definitely) you could definitely have approached Michael completely differently by say, giving him the benefit of the doubt rather than attacking in a highly accusatory tone.
- Chieze Okoye
When you've seen these same pictures posted multiple times by people that just find them on the internet and claim they are pencil drawings, when it has already been established on multiple occasions that they are not, the "benefit of the doubt" approach seems a little too generous. People post these images and claim they're drawings to get views for their own site or blog or page or whatever it is they post it on. It's wrong and it needs to be stopped.
- canadianmaple09
I can understand that, but you should also keep in mind that everyone is not as well-versed in the issue as you are. All I'm saying is that you would probably be more effective in this case if you weren't setting this up as a us-vs.-them, "must destroy with the validity my argument!" attitude when talking to a guy who's been actively having a discussion on the issue in what seems to me (having been around when he first posted the images and the follow up thread and what not) to be good faith.
- Chieze Okoye
Look at his first comment here. People clearly thought he drew them. He doesn't set the record straight. He also claims that they "are actually pencil drawings" and that "I have more drawings too." Later he claims that you need to look at them closer to see they are drawings and that he will "post the originals". Once again, this makes it sound like they are his. This follows the same...

- Michael Fidler
I would probably qualify as an image analysis expert, but there's no way to prove that online. One thing we can do is look at color. Even though the images are black and white, they're actually RGB images, meaning they contain cyan magenta and yellow. If you look at the image of the rhino you have posted then look at the photo of the rhino at the photographer's site you can see they both...

friendfeedCommentAnchor [v0.1.0] - http://wittman.org/project... - A user script, a bookmarklet and an alternative configuration userscript (has autoCommentAnchor turned ON). To add a permalink to each comment. The hyperlinked text default is "#" (you can change it in the Configuration section to "permalink", "linky", etc in the user script). Works in single post and stream modes. Tested on Firefox and Safari.

Special Note ~ Post image: NOT A HASH TAG :)
- Micah
I started the group ffhacks to house a concise listing of user scripts: http://friendfeed.com/ffhacks . If you have a script that works on the current version of FriendFeed, and you're its author, write a comment on http://friendfeed.com/ffhacks... with the link and I'll share the original friendfeed post to the group.
- Micah
Does it only work to other users with the script enabled?
- Andrew Trinh
The anchor is the comment <div> container id which has been there all along; there simply has not been a user interface to conveniently access it. So yes, a URL with the anchor will work for anyone regardless of script usage (tested in Firefox & Safari).
- Micah
ianf, yep. I try anyway. I remember one or two conversations you had anchors - I've wanted access them for a while too. Cheers!
- Micah
#hashanchors should have been there by default, so that you could spend your time on more creative things rather than fixing FF. In fact, absence of this key element of hypertext, granular addressability, tells me that FFeeders really do not care for comments - they're ffodder to the OPs, which are the only ones that rank anything in the hierarchy of submissions around here. If you enter the wrong credentials for a server, tell 7 to recall them and the login fails, all you'll get is an error message with no way to change the credentials from Explorer. You'll have to go back...

The above trend of centralization and simplification continues throughout 7. For example, you can't pin a shortcut to BOTH the Start Menu & the Taskbar. MS is really trying to eliminate redundancy not only in the OS but also in user behavior IMO

Earlier I'd posted that PS3 Media Server didn't work. Wrong. The trick is to reinstall the entire app if it can't install the service. I'm switching back to it and dumping TVersity, which seems to bloated for what I want it to do.

WMP 12 continues to be an unsung standout among media players. The newest development: the Play tab can now manage several playlists at once via its own back/forward buttons. What this means is that you can create instant playlists from searches WITHOUT losing the one you were listening to before, even if that one wasn't saved to a hard copy. If you prefer WMP folderize and rename your music files for you, ensure you change the Rip Music folder to where the tracks are actually located or it won't.

W7 just saved me $2K. How? Well, before I'd been planning to get a brand new high performance desktop from Alienware or the like. But my old laptop is so speedy after upgrading that I can comfortably shelve that idea and upgrading my LAN to 100% gigabit for under $200 instead

The new taskbar really really changes the way you think about multitasking. Since shortcuts and open windows are now represented in the same space, you're no longer glaringly aware of how many windows you have open

I love Win 7. I too saved money when I did a clean install on my four year old HP. BTW my PI is 3.1.

TROUBLE IN DRIVERLAND: Took a picture earlier tonight with my Canon, inserted card into reader on laptop. Nada. Turns out 7 never recognized it to begin with. Fortunately the driver question seems pretty common - it's right on the Toshiba Support front page. I downloaded and installed it and the reader works now. Also installed a driver for my WiFi adapter, just in case since I haven't had to use it yet and don't wanna find out it doesn't work when I actually need it

So, MS had publicly stated that all Vista drivers would work in Windows 7, and that's been mostly true from what I've seen. The fine print is that the installation process may not necessarily be the same & following the Vista instructions in 7 could result in some pretty odd - albeit reversible - problems. Such as this one: http://friendfeed.com/tech-su...

Major annoyance: it is a documented fact that Windows 7 (and perhaps Vista) will allow USB connections to "sleep" when they're not used for long periods of time (apparently this is a power saving measure) The problem gets worse when a USB hub is involved. My printer and hub often disappear from the PC if I haven't actively used them for a long time, and a reboot is the only thing that fixes it.

Haahaa someone bumped... *goes to commercial voice* "I just love the new iPad, it provides great coverage, maximum absorbency and it never does any of that bunchee stuff! At first I was concerned I'd have to give up my active, yuppy, lifestyle: tennis, spinning classes at the gym, & I was even hoping to take up horseback riding; but with the Apple's "magical & revolutionary" new iPad:...

iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd revealed this afternoon that he has already managed to jailbreak the iPad after just a day of sales. The crack is a variation on the same "Spirit" jailbreak recently used to de-restrict iPhone 3.1.3 and, like the earlier technique, is believed to use a browser-based exploit as part of a trick to get root access and let unsigned apps run on the tablet. It's not yet evident how easily this could be made into an automated process for regular users. A jailbreak was virtually expected following the iPad's launch, but the rapid discovery has shown that the iPhone 3.2 firmware used on the device hasn't patched all of the security holes that were present in the 3.1.3 code. Most jailbreaks to date have used vulnerabilities either in Safari or the OS itself to grant unrestricted access. The combination of the risk to users and Apple's own general discouragement of jailbreaking has led to many of these jailbreaks being rendered inert over time with firmware updates.
