Sean, if only I knew. This was delivered directly to me fresh and hot.

Wow, whatever you do, don't google "Asian guys at beach licking" if you want to find the Flickr account for this. No, seriously. Just...don't. o.O
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
changed my life forever...I will always go to the beach with a a few chubby buddies after porking myself up for those bosoms ~ and this image is most definitely going in the ol' spank bank

- Akiva Moskovitz
you know what would be funny: ok bear with me, if we blindfolded leather donut (you know the booby man) and...yeah fill in the blanks...something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- sofarsoShawn
Sir, randomly linking to your FriendFeed from one of my posts is oh wait you'll never see this because you're blocked for spamming. Thanks anyway, kaghazrangy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
damn this picture just won't go away - you have forced me to hide it
- William Harryman
Akiva, wasn't that pic taken at your last BBQ?
- Paul
Every time I see this picture I smile. Their joy is infectious, like herpes.
- Sparky
Paul, I surely do wish I had a beach in my back yard!
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sparky, I'm going to have this blown up to poster-size and attaching it to the ceiling above our bed. That'll cause some infections!
- Akiva Moskovitz
makes me want to grow a rack and diddle with my own, know what I'm saying?
- sofarsoShawn
this. . . .this. . . ugh . . . so fucking wrong.
- Peter Ghosh
Akiva - you can put anything you want above our bed.
- Sparky
i've been trying to formulate a comment for this for days, but i just...can't.
- joey
I still want to know the motivation here. is this a gay marriage argument? or are we already pushing group social contracts on friendfeed?
- Noah David Simon
oh man this one keeps popping up on ma friendfeed,....must spread virus nao
- Chris Hofmann
I'm surprised no one's noticed old boy's red-framed glasses.
- Akiva Moskovitz
oh right... the glasses are so important when three asian men are licking his nipples and all the comments are by people who think gay marriage has something to do with equality... when it has everything to do with taking protections away from children. the red glass glasses.... um yeah. chicken and Oklahoma with milk
- Noah David Simon
Mark, you have uncovered the dark underbelly of humanity except in this case it isn't dark but is rather a pasty hue somewhere in the vicinity of undercooked flan.
- Akiva Moskovitz
This should be in the default noobie FF stream. Like the first thing anyone who signs up sees. If they stick around they're part of the family.

Perhaps this can replace the kitty pic on the start page for non-members!

Just about the time you FF is getting some class .. Oh well we is what we is.
- Brent Smorgen Bleg
I can't believe after all this time some diligent FF'er hasn't dug up the identities (I said "titties") of this bunch and invited them to join the service that made them famous. Mitchell Tsai, get to work!
- Sprague D
i think if you unlike and delete all your comments anna it'll go away, but hide in general would be nice too (this photo makes me smile every time it pops up so don't mind it)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
*sigh* This is never going away, is it? It's gonna end up like James Bond movies and Swedish meatballs - always existing in the same form. never diminshing, never forgotten. :( :( :(
- Steven Perez
from IM
It will go away, to be replaced with photoshops of the original. It's all part of the meme lifecycle.
- Sparky
I am too new on friendfeed to know anything about record comments.. I love gmail tho, puts all the comments in one threaded email and I can delete them all later in one shot or not if I choose..
- David Gross

well we should aim to beat the record.. i mean jeez there are tons of things that could be said about this.. like.. does it taste like chicken?

I'm gonna have nightmares now. thanks ed. ;)

You can't close this thread. A lot of people say that this place is a Scoble-fest but, truly, it is this thread that is at the very heart of FriendFeed.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm officially going to proclaim that this is the FF equivalent of Goatse or FFoatse if you will. Lets all refer to it as that from this point forward.
- Mark Krynsky
Sparky has left 57 comments. The rest of you are slacking. Hop to it!

Chrisitan just walked by and said "It's too early in the morning for Japanese titty licking." It's NEVER too early for Japanese titty licking.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
THIS is the first thing I see here this morning?
- l0ckergn0me
Chris, you just woke up? C'mon, man! It's 10:30!

I knew he would break eventually - it's fitting that it's on this thread *now to find out how to hide a thread once you've commented....*

As much as I am loathe to bump this post, I have to do it to say, You, sir, are a master. Well played, sir. Well played. This is why I take every opportunity to say, in my next life, I want to be Akiva. I've already called it! Don't anybody go getting any more ideas.
- ♥patricia♥
I, for one, refuse to "bump" posts...it's very unseemly...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I wish FF-search allowed to do GROUP BY -aggregations so I could COUNT(*) who are the biggest *bump*ers. :)
- Jemm
Makes me laugh everytime I see it. Such a happy yet silly scene by the sea.
- Toby Graham
There is nothing silly about it. This is serious business.

The more I see this, the more I like it. Not for the ironic nipple-licking, but because these kids are genuinely enjoying themselves. :) Carry on.
- felicious
This photo looks so much better in iPhone 3.0!#!~

Seriously dude. What do I have to do to get rid of this disgusting picture!? Doh! Now I've just pushed it back to the top... yuck, I'm so sickened.

- Bec Rowe @d0tski
Oops! I hope I didn't just bump this up again... ;-)
- Sprague D
It's just so refreshing to see genuine juvenile humour at work. These kids are no different from any other, I think it's a great happy image, given all the other shite happening in this world on a daily basis. For those that are too pompous and prudish, 'up yours with brass knobs'
- ImJustCreative
Wow. 666. Nice! Actually, the reason Asashoryu is getting a divorce ( http://ff.im/4T0UA ), is because he wants to spend time with this lot.

You know, every time this pops up, since FF hides the middle of the comments of which there are 804 or so, I see Akiva say "I'm sorry." at the top. It makes me wonder about how some things are just not possible to apologize for!

the thing that strikes me about this (aside from the obvious) is after seeing this thing pop up like 35-40 times since March its just occurred to me that I don't have any (guy) friends that a) would lick my nipples b) would lick my nipples for a photograph. Maybe I should get out more...

- Ian May
Allright, you guys ready to shoot "mirth and girth"?
- Rick Cogley
For the life of me, I'll never understand the emotion people have around this picture for or against. There's no nudity at all, not even implied nudity. Less dude nudity than a beer commercial or cigarette ad, yet there are people who really really really hate this picture.

- sofarsoShawn
The bumping algorithm includes things like novel people posting to it, in addition to thread age, and rapidity of comments. If the same 3 people are talking in a thread, it quits bumping because it's obviously a closed tea party.
- Matthew DeVries

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. They eventually had to cull that thread.
- Matthew DeVries
I think everyone who has participated in this thread has 'culled' themselves privately.

Yes, I hate that I haven't had time to get back to this.. but I have something a bit bigger planned, we'll see how it pans out... congrats on the phone :)

@Tim: no problem. now tha FF is kinda on the downslide, i can see that something like this project might need to move to the back burner. the "something bigger" tease is cruel, tho<g>.

"Though the term “herd behaviour” today is most often used when talking about financial markets, it originally described individuals in a group acting together without direction – for example an animal herd fleeing from a predator. When seen from above, animal herds seem to follow intricate and intriguing patterns."
- Kol Tregaskes
from Bookmarklet
When we watch Planet Earth, I'm always amazed at the sheer numbers of herds. I like to think of herds as >1000 (is that less than?), but we saw one doc that showed something like 25K gazelles. Amazing. Or the one with the gigantic flock of birds. WOW.
- Captain Bubbles
Planet Earth is an amazing documentary. I guess Nature's Great Events are on their way to the US soon too. That's another great natural history doc from the BBC.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes, I've seen NGE, but seriously PE is infinitely better, visually speaking. The only thing that bugs me about PE is the constant, "Thanks to our brand-new, super-expensive technology we were able to be the first to capture this fish swimming." or whatever. Enough with the dick-stroking just give me facts.
- Captain Bubbles
Yeah but there isn't much of that to be fair and is completely overshadowed by the quality of the images and documentary. Both NGE and PE are excellent. We get so much of that from the BBC, it's great.
- Kol Tregaskes
You don't think it's a lot? The other night we watched the PE marathon on Discovery. In each hour show, Weaver must have mentioned it 3 - 4 times. That's a lot to me. :) I can't wait to get both series in a boxset, but we agreed that we'll wait until we get a better TV.
- Captain Bubbles
Anyone know when the new Planet Earth is coming out, i heard they were filming it a long time ago but i know it takes years to make those?
- Steve C
Steve, I had no idea there was even a new one in the making. How exciting.
- Captain Bubbles
Steve, I just realized that the Planet Earth marathon I was watching was narrated by Sigourney Weaver, whereas the old ones were narrated by David Attenborough. Maybe these are the new ones, which explains why I was confused over some of the topics thinking, "Gosh I don't remember that one."
- Captain Bubbles
New Planet Earth? News to me. I think there is a "movie" coming out or even out but I've not heard of any new series.
- Kol Tregaskes
In the U.S. Discovery cut the episodes and redid the narration with Sigourney. Same footage.
- Stephen Mack
Ah you can't beat David Attenborough - who could ever replace him?
- Kol Tregaskes
I'll have to look it up, but I thought it was in like Discovery magazine that they were making the next set of series. I was wrong once in like the second grade, so I guess it could happen again.
- Steve C
Seriously? I liked Attenborough's narration.
- Captain Bubbles
Anika. That's what I meant. There's no one better IMHO. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
David Attenborough is the king. Nobody else comes close. He's an incredible man- Parkinson did a great interview with him.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
And Attenborough says he has no plans to retire. Yippee for us. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Chrome OS will help kill Silverlight and other non-open tech, preventing msft and others from recapturing the web. (though I expect that it will support Flash by necessity)
I hope it doesn't. After all we need good media delivery platforms.
- Swaroop
Including GNASH - the open source alternative - would solve that problem
- Bogdan Costea
yeah, nobody really needs flash. kill it.
- Zio Bonino
Chrome OS might be a compelling case for SVG/<canvas> + <audio> tag replacements for flash. Dunno what SVG's perf is like on WebKit tho.
- Matt Mastracci
Microsoft will port it. It's all about codecs & DRM. Ogg Theora isn't all that great.
- Rodfather
@Swaroop eh eh, I've got flash disabled on all my systems :)
- Zio Bonino
@Benjamin I'd prefer HTML web apps over native apps anyday. But it'll take time for it to mature
- Swaroop
Rodfather, I don't think that will be an option for msft :). If Chrome is built the way I would do it, there is no installation per-se -- everything runs in the browser and the config in stored in the cloud (and cached locally). The computer is a pure appliance.
- Paul Buchheit
What about more standard codecs like h.264? That isn't open and is in hardware already.
- Rodfather
h.264 is established and must be in there, but it's not a platform like Silverlight is.
- Paul Buchheit
I know some of the guys behind silverlight. It is some great technology. Too bad it's from Microsoft and is closed.
- Joe Beda ()
from iPhone
A world with no Flash and Silverlight. I can't wait.
- Paul Grav
Yeah, it's too bad they didn't open-source it. This stuff with Mono is silly -- if you want to make a real standard you need to make the real implementation be open.
- Paul Buchheit
MS are about 10 years too late with Silverlight. And they'll most likely be dragged kicking and screaming into supporting HTML5.
- Paul Grav
Zio sez (hopefully humorously): "yeah, nobody really needs flash. kill it" -- have you ever watched a single YouTube video in your life? Like seventeen gazillion other people across the wired world. yeah, you're right, nobody needs Flash. ha!
- .LAG liked that
Remember Dave Clark in 1992, "We reject kings, presidents and voting. We believe in rough consensus and running code."
- Guy Vander Heyden
.LAG: most YouTube videos are playable without Flash now. My iPhone plays most of them and it doesn't have Flash. Certainly by the time the Google OS came out YouTube would be converted completely to non-Flash capability.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: The youtube flash application helps read the flv files on Youtube's servers and provides a UI (decoder too).
- Swaroop
Even Google admits they're not sure I'd bit for bit html5 video is less bandwitj consuming than flash. And flash isn't just media delivery, also interesting games and apps like tonepad, splicemusic.com's online sequencer, etc (I'm musically inclined, so most of my examples will be along that line) and please don't suggest we redo it all in java
- Ed F
from Nambu
Does this mean the next Silverlight release is codename Seppuku?
- Jay Cuthrell
Maybe we'll see commercials encoded in movies if everything is open.
- Rodfather
Flash is too established to kill off right now, so I'd be surprised if Chrome didn't include flash support. It will take many years to get rid of that thing. First they need to fix the standard browser to not be so broken (lack of video, multi-file upload, etc), then they need everyone to switch to the new html5 solutions.
- Paul Buchheit
Scoble ...that may be true, and YouTube plays on my Pre without Flash (yet)...but that doesn't mean that "nobody needs Flash." really? what would replace it?
- .LAG liked that
Is it just me or does Native Client (NaCl) remind you of the Microsoft Active X approach?
- Daniel Chow
But who prevents Google from taking over the net?
- Andreas
youtube videos play on iPhone/iPod Touch as they are higher res mp4 files NOT flv files. It was a big deal when Steve negotiated that deal with youtube.
- vijay
You have Moonlight to run Silverlight applications in Linux. Not perfect, but then an application made on Silverlight is "not perfect" by definition
- Marcos Marado
The point here is that Google has no motivation to include Silverlight on these machines, and installing software likely won't be an option (it's a web appliance), so it will be absent from a lot of netbooks, just as it is absent from iPhones. That cuts into market share, which is a bad thing for a platform that is trying to compete with more universal tech like Flash and HTML....
- Paul Buchheit
@DanielChow: NaCl has very little overlap with ActiveX, apart from running native code. It runs in a provably safe way, and explicitly does *not* allow it to access arbitrary host APIs. But it can be quite useful when you need to run code that would be too slow in Javascript (even on v8): e.g., heavy encryption/decryption, possibly codecs, definitely game physics, and so forth.
- Joel Webber
There is a time and a place for Flash and Silverlight so I hope it will run it. There are simply some things you can do which aren't possible, or practical in html/css/javascript.
- Steve Temple
Paul: why wouldn't Chrome OS come with Moonlight? And if not, why wouldn't you be able to just install it? And third, why the hell would people want Moonlight for? I never installed it and not even once felt the need to!
- Marcos Marado
from fftogo
because of moonlight http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlig... the potential userbase of silverlight is greatly improved, agree that projects which don't consider compatibility are limiting their potential
- Mike Chelen
@mindboosternoori Ryanair site uses silverlight: http://www.ryanair.com/site... that's the only website I know that uses it - for this you would need moonlight :)
- Ihar Mahaniok
Flash is needed for the google os to be useful in education. Many education based websites are flash based.
- Willowdale
@Paul "Google is probably paying OEMs to ship with this OS, so instead of paying $x/machine to include windows XP, they will get paid $y/machine to include Chrome." - paying present tense, already? Isn't it enough for OEMs not to have to pay hefty licenses to Redmond, etc., while being able to ship with a free, stable OS+browser combo; they need to be paid to do that as well?
- ianf ⌘
I sure hope so. I think the wide array of JavaScript libraries have been killing Flash for years. Silverlight was never really a player. The only think keeping Flash afloat is video
- Scott Radcliff
I don't know what's under the hood of Silverlight (nobody knows), but Flash is basically a sprite engine controlled by Actionscript, which is basically an adapted version of Javascript anyway. It's nicely packaged though, and has an army of developers, so it won't go away that easily, at least not until there are Flash-to-Canvas/ HTML5 porting tools/ translators and the like.
- ianf ⌘
to follow that logic...photoshop is needed as well
- Chris Hofmann
somebody call me when http://playboyarchive.com is working in Chrome OS (it's currently implemented in Silverlight)
- Karim
If it gains any traction at all, MS will just make Silverlight version that will run on Google OS. Sure google could block it, but they haven't done so with the Chrome browser.
- Jeff Weber
Interesting. I doubt the Google OS will get that big anytime soon though.
- Scott Radcliff
from email
Silverlight doesn't have a chance now...I wonder what would Adobe Air do.
- Saad Kamal
not really, if google want to be open then they will need a plugin architecture for it and then MS could just port for it. I really don't see this troubling mainstream users any time soon.
- Darren Stuart
Though I agree with the view that MS monopoly may erode as alternative devices get adoption over PC/Notebook, and these devices will mostly run on open source OS, but it may take years to create a significant change in every day usage of normal users. In the end, OS choice is mostly done by manufacturers, and they would be happy to get paid by open source vendors for putting their OS on...

Hayes, what makes you think it will lack media support?
- Paul Buchheit
I don't think it will lack licensed media support but what deals they are able to make will be crucial.
- Hayes Haugen
Hayes, i thought you were going to say that Netflix was using Silverlight. ;-)
- Karim
Yes, they are, what is their deal with MSFT? Can they do non Silverlight distribution?
- Hayes Haugen
i believe the Netflix non-Silverlight distribution is a format called "DVD" that works over the "Snail Mail" protocol. ;-) but clearly if Google is paying OEMs to install Chrome OS, they can pay Netflix to go back to Flash which Chrome OS will probably support "by necessity" ;-)
- Karim
How can Google make money from Chrome OS? Or does it want to make money from it except through advertisement? I still can not imagine that all software and service are free and sponsored by advertisements.
- Derek Wei
All Chrome OS questions are answered by today's Fake Steve Jobs ;)
- Hayes Haugen
Is there a need to make money? If more and more people eschew desktop offline applications in favor of online web based apps, it means more pageviews, more eyeballs, more advertising inventory, plus has the side effect of undermining a big competitor's cash cow.
- Ray Cromwell
That's the key, Google wants everything online. They figure the more people online, the stronger they become, and the more money they make. At least that what was said at the Chrome launch.
- Scott Radcliff

I'm amused that the "backwards compatibility" argument against alternative operating systems has slowly turned into "does it support flash", and when you unpack that it really means "does it play YouTube". I suspect Google will make sure ChromeOS cna play YouTube and they don't need Flash to make sure of it.
- Nick Lothian
Is it possible that Microsoft will write Office for the Web using Volta instead of Silverlight? Could be a showcase announcement for their attack on GWT
- Ray Cromwell
I think Microsoft is going to focus less on the front-end of the web and more on the back-end, middle tier and database sides. Azure is a big deal that consumers aren't talking about because it's not flashy but will be pretty important to developers (and especially enterprise-level applications) when it's finally ready because everything becomes an interface to the cloud. It looks like with Native Client, you should be able to write your Chrome OS app in any language you feel like. So far, they have some examples in C/C++, but one of the things they ported is a Lua interpreter. If Adobe isn't going to invest heavily in fixing the show-stopping bugs on non-Windows versions of Flash, it's inevitably going to die, and there's really nothing either Google or Apple can do even if they wanted to support Flash better.
- Victor Ganata
...ActionScript3 is ECMASCript-compliant. I know nothing about standards bodies, and shii like that, but what if Adobe dropped ActionScript and said, "You can now use pure Javascript to build Flash applications..." It wouldn't be a big leap. I'm pretty sure that would shut-up all the Flash haters. And to the folks who say Flash is hanging around just because of video...well, video is...

Actionscript is just the glue for the more advanced what-iffy graphic functionality of Flash. They can not drop it for Javascript, because it contains additional graphic primitives that JS lacks. I honestly don't know how necessary Flash is. Apple seems to be doing fine without supporting it. But certainly Gnash and Swfdec should be implementable on Chrome OS. The fact is that without Adobe's full support on a given platform, Flash apps will always be second class citizens on alternate platforms, and so far, there's no indication that Adobe is interested in fully supporting any platform other than Windows.
- Victor Ganata
ianf ...you bring up great points about Flash's detriments, as does Victor, but until there's a better way to bring video to the Web, I can't see it disappearing. Adobe seems to keep improving the Flash VM, hopefully they'll address those CPU-hogging issues and make a more efficent runtime. Yeah, I hate hearing the fans kick-in when visiting a Flash-heavy site too. <sigh>

Ed, those other uses can be accomplished through pure Javascript, video was the last remaining stumbling block

Still waiting on non-Flash recreations of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... Well aware of how someone mentioned higher up how you can combine javascript and svg to get nifty flash-like effects. I want apps like that though ^ Only real alternatives I've seen are Java-based ones, and those runs even slower than Flash.
- Ed F
Pardon me, but the OP is a ridiculous conclusion. For that to be the case, Chrome OS would have to kill Windows, OS X, etc altogether. Paul, I understand your viewpoint as being an ex-Google person, but that's just NOT going to happen. Right now the video specification from HTML5 has been dropped because of an impasse, meaning that we may be transitioning from 1 closed-source boss - Flash - to another - H264. Good luck.
- LANjackal
But why do these type of apps have to be written in Flash at all? You can easily do the same thing in C, C++, ObjC, Python, Ruby, etc., with the Native Client API that they're building for Chrome. http://code.google.com/p...

I'm just saying, it's not like Flash is the end-all/be-all. As Apple well demonstrates, some people can live quite well without it.
- Victor Ganata
Victor ...i think the answer to the 'why do these have to be written in Flash at all' question is because Flash is installed on such a significant portion of Web browsers. But I recall that Adobe Flex had a competitor, Laszlo/OpenLaszlo, which compiled apps to SWF or to Javascript. Who's to say that Adobe doesn't have the same capability of making SWF apps into JS ones? On one hand, it...

LANjackal, there is a question of degree in that Flash + H264 uses proprietary software and codec, while HTML5 + H264 requires only the codec. while OGV is no longer part of the spec, it can certainly still be used to have completely open video formats, and recent comparisons have shown it performs well http://people.xiph.org/~maikme...

Kari, I don't understand your question. Competition is good, but with open-source we get that -- no need for flash or SL.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, no, we don't get the same level of competition with open-source only. As long as there's an opportunity for big gains (like in this case to bridge the gap before html 5 era...to satisfy demand), there will be innovations driven by that. I wouldn't worry too much amount multimedia. By exposing WebGL, (and hopefully OpenCL), you can offload a lot of compute intensive stuff onto the GPU via GPGPU techniques, and NativeClient is there to take up the rest of the slack, but the for the vast majority of iPhone-like games, I'm willing to bet V8 Javascript on a modern processor is more than enough. That leaves licensing issues...

Paul, so are you saying that Google will block both Flash and Silverlight from ChromeOS? That's a new take on 'open.'
- Cliff Gerrish
MSFT next smart move: get Chrome OS (it's BSD licensed), inject IE9 and Silverlight into it and go benchmark against Chrome :)
- Claudio Cicali ♋
@caludio: They've already done that, somewhat. Silverlight 4 Beta supports Chrome. However I'm pretty sure it's probably technically impractical to run another browser atop Chrome OS anyway
- LANjackal
from IM
Something feels contradictory about a system touted to 'kill' competitors being 'open'. Sounds almost predatory to me.
- Karoli
If the concept of open source didn't allow for competitive business plans then quite a few companies that depend on it wouldn't exist. The "happy smiley" image most FOSS zealots promote isn't reflective of reality. There will always be competition, even among the free
- LANjackal
from IM
I'm not opposed to non-open software, but for OS, browser, etc I prefer that it be open. Cliff, Google isn't going to "block" anything, but they can certainly choose what to include, and my guess is that they won't include SL. As Claudio points out, MSFT can make their own version of ChromeOS that includes SL, which is why open source software is nice (it can't be crippled too much or else someone will fork it).
- Paul Buchheit
I have heard somewhere that Fash uses it's own port where Silverlight works over the HTTP port. That's why Netflix works so well. To that, Flash costs more on a sever side because providers can charge more for that port traffic. Could it come down to who is cheaper? (I am fully prepared to be wrong).
- Johnny Worthington
Johnny, they both use HTTP -- there's no difference there.
- Paul Buchheit
Is Chrome OS BSD-licensed? I thought it was using a Linux kernel.
- Victor Ganata
@Paul - well, Flash can do P2P stuff over non-HTTP posts, but that is very new (Flash 10 I think). The cost isn't affected anyway.
- Nick Lothian
My understanding is that netbooks would have to be absurdly popular for Chrome OS to make a dent in the popularity of Flash or SL.
- Gabe
not rly, the defeat of Flash & SL depends on the rise of HTML5, which will b supported by multiple browsers. Unfortunately spec disagreements r holding that up. That's another advantage of closed systems : fewer cooks often makes the broth get done faster lol
- LANjackal
from IM
How is HTML 5 going to defeat Flash and SL? I haven't used it, but I don't see anything in the spec that looks like it could compare.
- Gabe
@Gabe - what do you think HTML5 is missing? It does video, drawing, local storage, "threading" via WebWorkers. The biggest hole I'm aware of is the lack of access to webcams & microphones. What have I missed?
- Nick Lothian
HTML 5's not "missing" much in terms of its ambition. What it's missing is a consensus among its contributors. Flash and SL have gone through several iterations while HTML 5's been sitting there
- LANjackal
from IM
Nick: When you say HTML 5 has "drawing", are you refering to the Canvas element? I would not consider an immediate-mode procedural raster drawing library to be much of a competitor to retained-mode declarative vector libraries like SVG or Silverlight. Programming with the Canvas tag is sort of the equivalent of programming in assembly language for bitmaps.
- Gabe
@Gabe: I think you've got it upside-down. A Canvas-style API is the fundamental basis on which you can build a retained mode structure like SVG, et al. If a platform includes a retained-mode library as a convenience, so be it. You can build SVG on Canvas, but not the other way around (hacks like IECanvas notwithstanding -- they have horrible performance characteristics and are a nasty abstraction inversion).
- Joel Webber
So, if Moonlight (Mono) runs on linux -- Will google make sure it doesn't work on Chrome OS?
- Cliff Gerrish
No they won't, because it Silverlight already runs on Chrome as of Beta 4
- LANjackal
from IM
Joel: I don't think you said anything contrary to what I said. I just don't understand why any programmer would want to waste time writing an app using a low-level library when I could use a high-level library that implements everything for me.
- Gabe
@Gabe - I agree, and people are implementing those libraries now. See http://raphaeljs.com/ for example. Also, don't underestimate the convenience factor. I don't own any Flash development tools, but my text editor works pretty well for Canvas+JS based stuff.
- Nick Lothian
Nick: Didn't the author of raphael have some massive rant about how bad the Canvas element is? And I don't have any Flash dev tools either, but I use a text editor for most of my Silverlight development. It is incredibly convenient to be able to type something like <DataGrid ItemsSource="{Binding tabledata}"/> into a text editor and not have to create the data grid myself.
- Gabe
Why is Flash a "necessity" for an OS? I enjoy what flash can do, but it is like putting pimped out leather Oldsmobile seats in a Ferrari. It would definitely be nice, but certainly not a necessity.
- Dan Douglass
Early post goof up. To your original point, I agree. I like how Google is approaching the internet space with web apps that can be run with out a bloated browser.
- Dan Douglass
Dan Douglass: Flash is necessary because so many web sites rely on it. How many people would want to get a netbook that couldn't play FaceBook games or watch YouTube videos? Of course Google is in the unique position of being able to make YouTube work on ChromeOS without Flash, but they probably can't do anything about Hulu, Vimeo, or any of the other video sites out there that require Flash.

"PageRank assigns a reputation score to the URL where content is published. This makes it a great fit for content that stays put in one location. However, evolving content distribution via blogs, RSS, guest columns, and syndication are a challenge for PageRank. Tweets, retweets, micropublishing, ratings, and comments - even bigger problems. The solution lies in associating reputation with the identity of the author - a PageRank for People."

I agree with Joelle, mostly. The exceptions would be for trolls and spammers -- it's too much work to be on a constant lookout for trolling, and I'd really like to have an automatic metric which would enable me to automatically filter out such rubbish.

The problem with any such measure is that some people will take it far too seriously - make it into something authoritative instead of something helpful - and some people will game it. Interesting post, I was just thinking today when reading about Listiti.com about how Twitter Lists plus this new form of "Track"/search on them can at least partially solve that problem: Just pick a reputable List, one that is large enough to create a thorough but vetted "universe of discourse" (e.g. Scoble's Tech-News-Brands with 500 entries). Then you're searching over that set, and not over the entire freaking Internet. This pretty much bypasses all of Google's PR machinations and their gaming by SEOs.

I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.

Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah Wittman
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. you wait - the scary part of this comes when one of these ffoodoo heads stops turning, starts grimmacing and talking to you ..... have you seen one of these heads actually get up off the chair and curse the world??? ... the seeming dissynchronicity, the haphazard discord with which these dollheads turn might drive you ...nuts

I was talking to a friend recently about how a lot of women (including myself) let pictures of beautiful women (super models and celebrities) make them feel bad, inadequate and insecure. Essentially the most interesting points were that just because I say I like X doesn't mean I don't like Y. A lot of women like to take the statement, "I like X"...
. . . to mean that I don't like Y so they can feel bad about themselves. It's completely self-inflicted. But if I say I like Y, they never believe you. And as I was having this discussion, I realized how absurd my behavior was. Obviously I can like more than one thing, why can't men? In fact they do. Most men will tell you they like many different kinds of women. Sure they have some preferences but they are also capable of appreciating beauty in many forms. There are some men who subscribe to the belief that only super skinny women are beautiful but that's far from a majority. I've had people tell me that I'm beautiful but I refused to believe them. Why? Cause it's easier to believe the negative? Do I just want to have a pity party? Why can't I just take the compliment? After seeing it this way I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
As @RAPatton mentions, men go through this too but are much less likely to vocalize it. I've got some extra around the midsection and my wife says she loves the way I look. I often think she's just being nice because why wouldn't she be happier if I was more fit like a male model or fire fighter. I'm sure it's much harder for women with all the crap that's on television making us think we have to look a certain way to be attractive and creating problems we didn't know we had.
- Vaughn
A lot of women are trained not to trust men for a variety of reasons. It's a shame really because there are so many decent men out there that they get punished for things they never do.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
It's funny because I've dated the spectrum of guys, as far as body type goes, and I've never questioned it. I've had some female friends tell me they wouldn't date an overweight guy but I've always scoffed at that. And yet, on my low moments, I found myself wondering why a guy would like me heavy. When it comes right down to it, I've always been more receptive to attention AND gotten...

It's just strange how we make ourselves feel bad for no reason and we refuse to make ourselves feel good even when it's warranted
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Strange? No reason? Not really. It doesn't happen by itself. A host of different factors come into why we have skewed views of our bodies. I know exactly where my issues come from, and they were never borne out of magazines or societal views on what the ideal woman is, which is why I don't have the same reaction other women do to all the beautiful women posts. I take those for what they...

Really good post. I think one of my issues is that I try not to think about it. Thinking about it usually just leads to feeling bad, but really slogging your way through what specific things trigger the negative feelings is the only thing that can sort them out. I've rarely ever felt like I could talk about my body issues because I'm underweight (aka the skinny bitch ^_~) I usually get...

I just bought HTC Magic yesterday. My first smartphone, it's awesome!:) I would like some tips for good and useful apps, which ones do you use? The best Facebook, FriendFeed, Twitter apps? And should I watch out for some apps?
@LANjackal Oh, so you haven't got it in the US? I thought that you were the first to get it! It was released on Thursday here in Sweden, bought it yesterday...with free internet for 2 years :)
- Patrik Johansson
@Patrik: AFAIK it's not available in the US :(, no
- LANjackal
I'm considering getting one, fancy the gmail push, but no 3.5mm headphone socket :-( Waiting on iphone update this week, but would love to see if HTC has good facebook/twitter apps etc before going for iphone. I'm in my cancellation period with Orange :-)
- bairnpunter
from twhirl
I'm using Twitroid now, quite good. But still don't know which Facebook app I should use, any suggestions? And a FriendFeed app would be neat!
- Patrik Johansson
Facebook: Delet your account :), Twitter: Twidroid, Friendfeed: Mother Feed or the excellent web interface: http://friendfeed.com/iphone . Have a lot of fun with your new Android. PS: you can always browse through the apps comfortably on http://cyrket.com
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
Thanks Ethan and Ryo for the tips! I will go through them and see if I find something cool!:) Regarding Facebook, I still think it's a good product. I can be on FF, Twitter and GTalk. But where's my friends? Well, on FB and MSN...so I guess, I have to be where my friends are.
- Patrik Johansson
Patrik, you have the wrong friends ;) Mine are on GTalk and Friendfeed :)
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
Ryo, haha yeah maybe:p But it takes some time before "new webstuff" hits here in Sweden. Most of my friends have Hotmail, don't know what RSS is...when I try to explain I get "Nah, nothing for me". And none of them have heard about FriendFeed, Twitter, Delicious, Flickr etc.
- Patrik Johansson
Hi Patrick, try the new social browser: "Dolphy Browser", I really like it better than the default browser that come with the HTC magic. You will find it in the market.

Dear Leo, I love you to death, however, please let your darling daughter know Monaco is not an island off the coast of France and yes, Monte Carlo is the capitol. My daughter is the same age and we are starting to shop college's as well. I wish you the best of luck finding a school that suits her well. I was an exchange student as well and found it the best experience ever!
- Jennifer Ragde
Okay, now my computer politically correct daughter is telling me this was not the correct way to state my opinion as I should have commented on the photograph. Not to nitpick or anything, but Monaco is the name of the state and the capital city. Monte Carlo is just one of city's administrative areas :)

It's 1985 or 1986. I was 28 or 29. And an utter dork.

Okay. Leo you rock! Let me get that out of the way. But you look like Susan Boyle in this photo. Sorry, someone had to throw it out there. ;-)

Dear Dorian, I stand corrected. I was just stunned that someone thought Monaco was an island. When I was in high school (when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, ha ha!), we had to memorize the world in geography. I guess times have changed.

LOL, I took all those old photos of me and hid them deep!

If you have tried to use bookmarlets, you may have noticed the browser automatically appends http:// in front of your bookmarklet js code... I've been able to get *some* bookmarklets working in the android browser by updating the bookmark urls manually in the database.
- Tim Hoeck
It looks like document modifiers don't tend to work, however, I was able to get a couple basic bookmarklets functioning..
- Tim Hoeck
Using adb: sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.browser/databases/browser.db
- Tim Hoeck
Then: update bookmarks set url="<insert bookmarklet>" where _id=<id of bookmark to update>;
- Tim Hoeck
I assume this solution is only working for development phone, not for all?
- Matt Zhou
Matt, if you have access to adb, you can do it.. I found it kind of pointless in the end though, because none of the really good bookmarklets work, only basic ones.
- Tim Hoeck
It might be possible to save bookmarklets using a small app that uses "Share link" intents ... eg, long press on the bookmarklet link, select "Share with BookmarkletSaver", which would then add it to your browser bookmarks, without the http://. Only useful if most bookmarklets actually function though ... which it seems that don't .. :<

If you use the Gmail theme "Tea House" you may not have noticed that, late at night, the ghosts come out to play. Have you found any other easter eggs in Gmail's themes?
- Carlos Granier-Phelps

Whoa. I use that theme on one of my accounts, but I never use that account at night.
- Captain Bubbles
haha. Love Easter Eggs. Thanks for pointing that out. Like Anika I never use that account at night. BUT I do like how the solar system rotates on my Gmail Theme throughout the day. Very fine. :)
- Melanie Reed
That's supposed to happen as well in the same iGoogle theme but I have the impression that that only works in America as I have never managed to see that in the iGoogle page, which is pretty disappointing. The rest of the world do like those Eastern Eggs in the Google themes, not that I have waited at night to see it (I'm lying on this) but if you, for whatever reason (playing Sudoku), are still up you should be able to watch and enjoy it in the same way as an American. Shame on you Larry and Sergey. ;)

In Singapore, I can also see some. Like in the Phantasea theme, usually water is deep blue, but when getting late (2200pm i guess), it will become purple. and deep in the night( 3 or 4 AM, not sure, because usually never bother to look at clock at that time) it will be like bloody red.

Robert: I don't mind good marketers, as long as they're genuine. Too many of them (particular the "social media marketing gurus") are just unforgivably obnoxious and fake in their attempts to pimp their own garbage services/blog. So, I really hope you're right :)
- Brett Kelly
Bad marketers on FriendFeed will survive in search results. Do a search for a couple of terms like 'canon 135mm' and you'll see plenty of entries that are just links to people selling the lens. You're not going to block them all. I don't see that as a big problem, but I suspect they'll be successful enough there to keep them coming.
- Edward Coffey

"Now on to Google Wave! - sean andersen" Exactly. Unless the FF core team is over there on the sandbox right now, doing all they can to start the scrambling scrum RIGHT NOW, the big GWave will assimilate all. At least until the assimilation wave after that. FF has maybe a one year window -- if that -- to make it's move, whatever that might be, starting right now.
- michael silverton
Citronella - I like that the spammers are vaporized almost instantly here. Decent built in tools for group reporting.
- BairdWilliamson
If I got here before Guy and I'm geekless does that give me any special designation?

@silverton, agreed that FriendFeed has a limited time window to figure out what it wants to be when it's all grown up.. in other news, can't believe it took Guy this long to show up here to play. Nothing wrong with a little marketing, especially if it's of the "Moving the Freeline" variety.. +1 Gilbert, LOL.
- Alex Schleber
If I were Guy, or the head of any company, be it a camera shop or whatever, whenever I had a little free time, I'd tweet out, "Hey, I'm going to be on FriendFeed for an hour or so, answering any questions about Alltop, telling you about its features, advantages, and benefits, come join in!" or something like that. That's a vertical that feeds off Twitter and really enriches both platforms, utilizing them both for their strengths.
- Stephen Pickering
With Leo, Steve Rubel, and Guy K now all here .. this landscape is about to change ... agreed.
- Charlie Anzman
I'm reading Crossing the Chasm, only 18 years after it was published. Can I blend in as a "marketer" now?
- DGentry
Well hopefully communities will coexist in open social media, we aren't defined by what or where we login to right? It's just information we share, the platform is merely a pipeline. The communities need to exist beyond the platforms
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
So, do you think the population will tend to shift to more casual people than the creme de la creme people. I feel so, since there are only the innovative, open-minded people on FriendFeed right now; and I think the change is pretty near.
- Yiğit Arda Türkoğlu
Marketing guys have always been here. The difference... tactics and respect. That being said change is always happening and even still I'm not sure Friendfeed will hit the critical mass Twitter has with marketers. The friendfeed brand will likely be defined differently than Twitter and attract different people. Time will tell.
- Jim Goldstein
from iPhone
why? can't marketing guys and geeks get along?
- kakuei
No. We cannot get along. This war has been waged for too long, and too much blood has been spilled. Most of us no longer even remember why we are fighting, but it doesn't matter. Victory is all that matters.
- DGentry
The marketers are already here, but most of them are totally clueless about how friendfeed works. They somehow think they can dump their stuff here and it will get "found" and when that doesn't work, they just go back to twitter. The ones that do understand how it works either feel it is too much damn work to fake being real to be worth it, or they are the real deal and it works quite well for them.
- April Russo (app103)
April: I think there's some cost-benefit analysis going on there. There's a smaller crowd at FF and it takes a lot more work. Plus, most people here are marketing jaded.
- Trent Hamm
Guy is a marketer, sure, but also a geek. Geeks phase ends when the Celebs show up.
- Garin Kilpatrick
well if they start selling, just dont click "like" or "comment" and they will drop off the page in minutes
- Mark
I think some marketers are already here..but anyway, you think Guy being here will change things much?

- echostreamer
Jason Pollock liked this, that is HILARIOUS! He posts the most redundant links on Twitter...a notorious spammer. At least Guy admits what he does, still somewhat annoying. Not sure why Leo Laporte was mentioned, I don't see him fitting that GK mold at all.
- Benjamin Taylor

Was the resolution improved on last update? I used twitpic, because FF limited the pic size to 1600, while twitpic did published it in full resolution.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
I never posted bigger pics to FriendFeed so I don't know. The only way to find is to try it.
- LouCypher
Been doing it since recently. Quite effective. Definitely more reliable than TwitPic. Except that there is no way to post *ONLY* FF photo posts to Twitter.
- Vijayendra (V-Mo) Mohanty
LouCypher, yes just did it. It's still limited to 1600x1200 :( I think I'll use Twitpic then, as long as I can't set the cam to automatically resize it to that resolution when sending via mail. Would be a waste of bandwith otherwise.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
Maybe it's due to fact that FF is not a photo hosting service.
- LouCypher
Well at last they offer that service, like you said :)
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
Yeah, so your pictures are shared on Twitter, commented and 'Liked' on FriendFeed. Great!
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
and you can share multiple pictures from FriendFeed.

What about TweetPhoto, now that it's finally open?
- Tyson Key
Tyson, at last it's open Beta now. Looks good, but I don't see any benefit over twitpic.

"Twistory supports Thunderbird, Google Calendar, Apple's iCal, and any other application that supports feeds using the iCalendar format. This means you can even download your Twitter posts to Microsoft Outlook or any other Web service you use to keep yourself organized. The service stays on top of your Twitter feed and adds your new tweets instantly, so it's not a one-time export that you have to repeat every time you say something new."

Twistory archiving of your Twitter updates to e.g. GoogleCalendar is better than nothing, though I find that the lack of back-link to the original Twitter status, as well as any links in the tweet not being clickable from the pop-up view in GCal are a major drawback. I have been importing my tweets into Tumblr (via the RSS feed), and it solves those two issues, though it's definitely...

Actually, I have been having problems with FF's search lately... it can't find any of my older than 6 months posts.
- Lindsay
I've always had issues - probably my lack of comprehension ;)
- Mona Nomura
Oh, but I guess you mean the other side of search (getting Google to pick up your stuff)... just caught that... I need to learn how to use Google to look up stuff on FF instead of looking up stuff on FF, I guess!
- Lindsay
Lindsay - let me put it this way. One year ago today, I was not Googleable. Fast forward 365 days and my content is searchable. Apparently I can be looked up by my first name (I don't see it, but Chris mentioned I'm on the first page) I attribute that to FriendFeed and the FF community :)
- Mona Nomura
I have always had a bunch of pages (at least the first 12 or so) in Google when I look myself up (I've never been shy about putting my name on stuff I do on the net) so it never occurred to me to try to use Google to look up my stuff on FF. But that issue aside, and back to your original question, I would like to know if I can get my FF direct posts into an archive somewhere... especially concerned since I can't search for anything older than 6 months... is everything really still even there?
- Lindsay
if this were facebook that picture would be so removed! especially if it were a human infant attached to the milk dispencer.
- Nathan Eckenrode
@Melissa: It's not illegal to breast feed animals, and why should it be? Why is it 'disgusting'? Do you think it's disgusting that humans drink cow's and goat's milk, among other things?
- fn (fairnymph)
I asked that on another thread here a while back, fairnymph, when someone was acting all offended about the PETA / Ben and Jerry's thing... personally, I find inter-species milk exchange a lot more offensive than intra-species milk exchange. But I'm not a milk drinker.
- Anthony Citrano
I know you're not a milk drinker my dear, but you continue to be LOGICAL, which is why I love you so. If someone thinks all adult milk consumption is gross, I can understand and respect that. But arbitrarily considering some interspecies milk consumption acceptable and others not is irrational. It reminds me of all the silly knee-jerk reactions I got in response to drinking breastmilk cocoa. Curious - would you drink human milk?
- fn (fairnymph)
I do consume dairy products, yes [only humane, organic, blah blah], but still wish I didn't. Drinking milk and eating meat have been long out of my diet, though.. it's a long process... Also agree w/ your health analysis w/r/t monkey vs. cat. Also good luck with people coming back to threads. This is why threads die; FF still tends to be drive-by for most users.
- Anthony Citrano
If I send you some of my homemade dairy products one day, will you eat them? :D
- fn (fairnymph)
No, I'd probably tell you I did and then give them to the neighbors. BTW, you're freaking out the squares. ;p
- Anthony Citrano
@akiva Tori Amos did it on the cover for Boys for Pele, and yes, David Lynch is pretty weird.
- Tsali, The Native of FF
@Akiva, no, it's really part of Dune. Thufir Hawat was poisoned and had to milk a cat for the antidote. Not that Lynch didn't brilliantly realize the whole thing onscreen.
- Josh Haley
You know I love freaking out the squares! And I'll make some delicious ice cream in a flavour you can't resist.
- fn (fairnymph)
I knew a chick on Yahoo who did that once. Not pleasant to watch

@anthony I thought you were all about the titty? Must I remind you of the Kiera Knightly tweet? http://friendfeed.com/e... You were all about BIG MAMS
- sofarsoShawn
Trust me, Shawn, I would not be trying to milk her.
- Anthony Citrano
As an ubah cat lover... I shall never stoop to this level of loving my cat. Frankly this is so wrong in so many ways. So the fairnymph freak who thinks this is okay...it's not HUMAN!! this is a fricken CAT!! Let us drink our goats milk and cows milk, that is what our CREATOR intended for HUMANS. For the LOVE!!
- Tracy
Tracy, what? 1st: No creator, 2nd nature intended goat milk for goats, and cow milk for cows, that makes 3rd: "We are the cat who drink milk from a foreign species"... poor cows.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
@Ryo, so net:net you're saying we ought to raise women for milk?
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony, it sounds like a nice idea :) But what I wanted to say, as long as you are drinking cow milk, there is no reason to get mad about a cat drinking human milk.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
I could swear I hid this a while back.
- Beau Liening
It might relate to a recent story I saw about infants preferring the taste of alcohol flavored breast milk moreso than regular milk flavored breast milk though.

Uhh... wow. I was totally not expecting all of the violently negative reactions when I expanded the comments on this entry. What gives?

- Sheree Motiska
Maybe it's time for a "you know you're addicted to FriendFeed when..." meme. ;)
- Meryn Stol
Don't believe Steve. He's got other desktops with Posterous and GMail themes that he uses when he claims he's in love w/ them. ; )
- Rex Hammock
Funny, I just saved that same background image to my desktop. Just need to shrink it a bit from its 18,000x18,000 dimension :)
- Jan Ole Peek
I love FriendFeed so much that I created my very first Greasemonkey script for it just now to improve the usability: "Sidebar Tweak" fixes the sidebar in place despite scrolling, which alone is worth its weight in gold. I use the Helvetica theme, and the rest of the changes are meant for it, to tighten up things to show more items, as well as highlight the user's own comments in light-blue: http://userscripts.org/scripts... Try it and let me know what you think.
- Alex Schleber
I like that script, very useful! I changed position of the sidebar in my version to right:50px instead of left:900px so the sidebar does not cover the content area on smaller screen. Also the headers of the sidebar items was weird on the grassland theme i'm currently using. I fixed it by removing botton-margin on the .box-bar.
- Jesper Lind
Oh yeah, a nice blue box on my comment, thanks for the script!
- Jesper Lind
El. Oh. El. You gotta be some sort of stupid to friend your boss before your probation period is up. Fired in front of friends and family? PRICELESS.
- Captain Bubbles
She's a f*ing idiot. A similar thing happened to a friend of mine at an ad agency, who accidentally texted "my boss is a fucking cunt" ... to her boss. She didn't get fired or reprimanded, but she freaked out about it.
- LANjackal
It floors me how much people openly vent about their jobs on public feeds like FriendFeed. Even if your boss isn't a direct contact, how are people so sure that a boss or co-worker won't stumble across it?
- Mike Doeff
from iPhone
If I have complaints about work, I try to mask them as much as possible or make them more about me personally than the job itself. At the same time, I really try to stay mum about any job I have..
- Jon, the Beartato of FF
Mike and how are you so sure that other people don't know who you are talking about? There's a person here on FriendFeed who complains about their coworker. Even though I live in a different city, I know that coworker.
- Captain Bubbles
+1 Anika. I generally refrain from talking bad about my employer/coworkers ANYWHERE online. Even on anonymous accounts. You just never know who might freak out and file an unmasking court order. It's happened before.
- LANjackal
from IM
It also doesn't matter if anyone sees it when you write it, because The Google sees it and records it for anyone looking for it years from now.
- Trish R
Maybe the more general rule that comes into play here is to never say anything about someone you wouldn't tell them to their face.
- Ken Sheppardson
What an idiot... When people claim we don't need guidelines for employees using social media, I just have to point out cases of extreme stupidity like this...
- Badger Gravling
Ouch! Hope she learned the lesson. And +1 Ken, this is the simplest rule not to forget at any point.
- lelapin
Well someone has to make room for other people! From the sounds of it, she was probably already canned anyway.
- Robert Fisher
Well that was a bit dumb. The thing about social media is it's just so much a part of our lives. We are encouraged to pour our views and feelings into it but we have to remember who is going to be reading it. In the end we have to censor ourselves so as a result our lifestream is a watered down stream. There are no directors cuts.
- Parvez Halim
Interestingly, every time I consider complaining about my job via any social media platform, I stop and think "how can I make my job better? how can I improve myself?" and then end up writing about that instead. It has made me a much happier person. Really.
- mike fabio
:). Well it's okay for both of them. It sounded like the employee was really unlucky to got this job. He hated it deep inside. The "Boss" don't need people which don't love their work, ASK YOURSELF: What's more worse? Being fired after posting you real thoughts somewhere, or keep on working without having a bit of joy or patience on the job and face serious health problems after some time?
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
.. and that's why I'm private. I'm pretty good about not talking about work, but never know when I may say something completely stupid
- Rodfather
I think there is a serious point here: Your on-line social network pals will be supportive of you regardless of whether you are right or wrong. That's what friends are for, kind of. All the boss does is let in a bit of reality.
- sjjh
Maybe she wanted to be fired by her boss? Just questioning...
- Torsten Eckert
Splendid. Too bad the story isn't real. OR IS IT...?
- Francesco Balducci
I do so love the false sense of anonymity the Internet instills in people.
- matthew john ernisse
Where did you get this? I'm trying to verify that it is actually a real event. Looks too 'perfect' and to generate this much hype I believe it is just two friends that wanted to laugh about how stupid the world is...
- Brian J. Reeves
I wondered the same myself. The language suggests it's from the UK

social media and your boss don't mix well :)

"Should Lifestreambackup support Friendfeed? As soon as the news broke that Friendfeed was acquired by Facebook, the emails began coming in asking us to backup FriendFeed, as many users wanted to export their data. Our general approach to product development is to place highest priority on the things our existing users want most, so if FriendFeed is something you really want us to support, let us know. We have heard from several users, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that a large number of you want Friendfeed backup support. So if you do, leave a comment on this post, send a twitter message to @robmay saying that we should support friendfeed, or tag a tweet with #backupfriendfeed."
- Kol Tregaskes
from Bookmarklet
I'm thinking how it's possible that. My data in Friendfeed are posts, comments, likes, relationships, groups and other little things. Export a thread of mine mean export also comments of other users within. And what about my 12 thousand comments, most of them on other threads? Haven't sense export only my comments but the entire thread in wich I have commented, otherwise the conversation will be decontextualisated
- Roberto
Roberto, you're quite correct in your analysis of decontextualisation of content, but observe that formally you do not own that other content. FF may allow you to export your own posts (may, because you are expected to do that via API calls and third party tools, not native ones), but comments are formally not your own any more. They belong to to the owners of the thread in which you...
- ianf ⌘
@ianf ⌘ I think the same. In fact what I meant to say was exactly that. I read of people who want to export their contents from Friendfeed, when we publish feeds that are already present on other platforms, while most of our contents will probably have been left on the thread of other people. The only thing that can be exported have their own thread opened directly into Friendfeed. Another question should be. Another question: to export a thread I have to ask the consent to all those who have commented it?
- Roberto
Lifestreambackup should absolutely #backupfriendfeed! Regardless of FB/FF drama, it's always good to back up one's contributions on a venue. #dataportability FTW!
- Uche Ogbuji
I'd love to see the feature, but I'm not sure why LSB would invest the time in helping their users back up FriendFeed. LSB has found other services that need backup offerings too.
- Bill Sodeman
+1 Mel - I am gutted and don't know what to do if the main FF site closes
- Matt Hooper
Why would I leave friendfeed? This place works well enough for me.
- Talon Lardner
Manuel: back to my blog and Twitter, probably. I'm playing around with Facebook but it doesn't quite do it for me.
- Robert Scoble
I'm sticking around unless there's some sort of mass exodus which I don't see an immediate reason for.
- Mike Elliott
Not leaving 'til it closes, and I'm certainly not going to facebook or twitter even then.
- Jim Hearts FF
I'm sad, but I'm sticking around. I'm hoping others do to. At some point, the fuss will die down.
- Helen Sventitsky
Mike: because I expect it will get shut down eventually if it doesn't get invested in, and if it gets no new features it will fall behind Google Wave and other projects.
- Robert Scoble
This feels like that HBO Documentary about Brooklyn Dodgers going to LA haha.
- Manuel Mas
And, actually, Google Wave seems to be the most obvious thing for me to try out from now on.
- Robert Scoble
I will stick around until they move the features I like from friendfeed onto facebook.
- Bryan Lee
Isn't it a bit early to make decisions? Has there been an announcement that I missed that FF is going away? Even if it isn't where else is better at this point?
- Internet's Tad
I'm not going anywhere Helen...When it goes it goes...I'm sitting tight on the ship
- Bill Heslin
there used to be a kind of message board system ages back with FB. disppeared one day never to return, lets hope this will bring something of that back, who knows..
- Terry O'Fee
Waiting and watching. Robert, I know you have a discussion tab on FB but its not the same. ;)
- Melanie Reed
Mashable just published a How To Take Advantage of FriendFeed's Unique Features. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. A little late for that, no?
- Stephen Pickering
How soon before google wave becomes available to the early adopters/public?
- Bryan Lee
didn't you just just say "FriendFeed is dead. I will keep using it until Paul unplugs the last server, which could be years" ? or i'm missing something
- Liviu Barbat
I'll stick around to the bitter end.
- Dave Metzener
Robert: Earlier in the day you were excited for both FriendFeed & Facebook. It didn't sound like you were leaving FriendFeed. What changed? Why not stick around to see what happens?
- Jill Elswick
Bryan: I heard they weren't handing out beta access to non-developers until September. Cold be wrong but that's what I heard
- Mike Elliott
I'm in wait and see mode. It would have to be absolutely sucked in by FB for me to leave it completely.
- pea
When should we cue in Titanic's last song by the band as FF sinks below leaving us all behind?
- Manuel Mas
Robert, if you believe this is a good deal for both FF and FB - why are you leaving?
- George F. Snell III
Why leave now? Until it is changed or killed, it still works just the same.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Same assessment as you, I'll stick around but I need to find an option B now. I guess I'll go wherever Louis Gray recommends
- Alberto Saavedra
I plan on sticking around for a little while longer. Not ready to jump ship yet.
- David Finch
Melanie: yeah, real time really has me going. I will wait until I get a better sense from the FriendFeed team about what will be done here. I just am not getting the right signals from the team that there will be any investment in this. If that's the case, I'd rather invest my time somewhere else. Google Wave. Ning. Vanilla on Building43. Twitter, now that I got rid of the spammers. Etc.
- Robert Scoble
I'll watch and see what happens. IF I feel that it would be useless to stay, I'll leave the site.
- TeraDyne Azurepaw
I think the features of FF will be incorporated into FB (guilt free) and FB profiles will be more tied into FF. That's about all we'll see...
- Gus
Manuel: hey, Pirillo is over there. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm staying here until something else catches up.
- Bruce Lewis
Robert, I can definitely see the value of your invested time on any service, but for the average user, what is the downside of sticking around here as long as the site still exists?
- Jeff P. Henderson
@Scobleizer: The big crowd is not even at Friendfeed yet and you are already leaving? Someone will be by in a few minutes with a drink. Please help yourself and stick around for the conversation. You will be greatly missed should you choose to leave so soon.
- David Damore
Social Media is a set of tools--I appreciate the connections I make, but I'm not getting too emotionally worked-up about the tools changing. FF probablywon't function as my Social Media hub much longer.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
I like it here, so I'll hang out as long as possible.
- sean percival
Not making any set plans yet, but keeping my eyes and ears open.
- Martha
And when Google buys Twitter, won't that be interesting
- Stephen Pickering
Bruce: have you played with Wave yet? I'm wondering how good that is? I gotta get an invite. Off to beg someone cooler than me. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I will continue to use it until it closes down in its current form.
- ashish
I'm a little pissed that we haven't heard much from our other "rock stars". Where the hell are they? This concerns them, yet I can hear a pin drop. I think there secretly plotting. Roflmao
- Jeunelle Foster
I don't want to but if it eventually goes down the way everybody's predicting it will then i'll have to look for alternatives :( .......by the way where do i beg for Wave invites :)
- Bhowmik Shah
I'd bet Microsoft buys Twitter before Google does.
- Gus
I haven't played with wave yet, but from what I've seen it's got potential. FriendFeed's got polish.
- Bruce Lewis
I wasn't planning on going anywhere, but I guess I'll be spending more time on Social Median. Perhaps someone should start putting together a decent buddypress site?
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I might leave only because I quit facebook - I hate the mindset, the shallowness, and am afraid (make that certain) those people will come here
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Gus: Microsoft and Twitter deserve each other. They are both somewhat buggy and don't come up with new features very often. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
I think I'll be heading back to Twitter until Google Wave is publicly available
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Robert: Since at the end of the day all these platforms are businesses and have to eventually make money does it make sense to keep investing time and effort into building communities on them when they can sell/merge at any time and dismantle the tools that keep the community in place? it seems like the portable community concept of something like Google FriendConnect now makes more...
- Mike Elliott
The other rock stars are drinking. :-)
- Robert Scoble
If Facebook had an easier way of connecting with people but not showing them all the personal stuff I'm willing to show to my close friends (and the stuff my friends post about me), I don't think I'd need anything like FriendFeed or Twitter.
- Edward Coffey
Robert: I've played with Wave and I wouldn't really put it in the same category as FriendFeed at the moment. It's not really about sharing and conversing in mass form IMO. Its really conversation with maybe 20 people or so but its much more difficult to focus conversations about shared content. Let everybody know when you get an invite and your address so we can add you! :)
- Brandon Titus
It kinda proves a theory I have about us all being reduced (if I can use that word) to channels. I don't think social networking will go away, but as the internet and deals increase, so does the noise. Don't worry Scobe, you still show up in our Google reader every morning!!
- professor daddyo
Man, what are we going to do without these discussions like this?
- Stephen Pickering
Mike: No community is permanent. It's worthwhile to participate even if it's temporary.
- Bruce Lewis
@Gus, Well MS has large stake in FB so I'm not sure about that. I'll stick around here till it peters out. The tech news rooms here are top notch.
- Adi
I don't use FF much other than for private rooms, so I'll stay for those. Whatever other activity I have (which is sporadic and generally not personal) will also remain.
- Cheryl
I'll stick around until they pull the plug.
- Morton Fox
Leave friendfeed? what's the alternative I'd really like to know. Is it facebook?
- Tate DA FF MVP
I'll stick with it as long as it's here and people are still active. FF4L!!
- Cassidy
What is the next thing? Where do we go now? Not FB! But where?
- Michael Liss
I won't be deleting my account, but signing in and commenting? No. No real point to continue putting data into a service that is gonna get unplugged anyway. Guess we just have to return to blogs and twitter.
- BCK
