I took some classes on experimental electronic music and such when I was in college and did some reading on my own since then... and so I've been exposed to some ideas in music that are way way way distant from the popular music norm. And I'm still not entirely sure what I really think about them so I'll write some thoughts up instead...

So, while I can go for long spans of time without needing a car and, whenever my wife is out of town on business, let the car sit in the parking spot or let her take it with her... well, my wife still drives. And last weekend, without much warning, we ended up carless all weekend because the car needed to go in for maintenance and it took much longer than expected. Now, it's not like we spent the whole weekend wailing and gnashing our teeth, maybe even rending our clothes... but it did throw a loop in our plans...

I've been putting off purchasing radio slaves for a long long time. Because I know that the cheap eBay ones kinda suck but I don't want to pay for a proper high-end PocketWizard. Thankfully, PocketWizard has been competing with the cheap imports the right way. Thus, as time goes on, it becomes more and more likely that I'll just buy a few Plus III's to supplant my existing suite of optical triggers.

The control of information is critical to embedding questionable thoughts in a person's brain. Make somebody feel like the world is screwed up and going in the wrong direction is a great way to scare them and therefore shove your fascist beliefs down their throat. I tend to be cynical on the short term but optimistic over the long scale, which I largely feel is because, while there's a very long trigger time before the urge to ferment violent rebellion hits, eventually you reach the triggering point if the problem hasn't been otherwise fixed. But I thought I'd mention a few positive happy facts that a lot of people really don't want to admit to because these are the ways that they can control you. And, with an eye towards a bit more irony than strictly required, I'm posting it on Sunday...

Kodak's camera business has been losing money for a long long time. With the decline of P&S cameras and rise in good-enough cellphone cameras, this trend is just going to continue. One of my friends asked what Kodak will continue to make. I told her that Kodak will still make film, to which she replied that she thought Kodak got out of the film biz. As it turns out, right now Kodak's film business is profitable.

I understand that the people who say these things are well within the throes of cognitive dissonance... a cognitive dissonance that they have been manipulated to by people who do not consider a 'pious lie' something other than a fancy excuse for what is still a lie. But you have a whole lot of people who try to use the bible to justify changes in the very much secular American government.. but who scream and yell about the separation of church and state when anything doesn't go their way...

The Olympus OM series was a classic 35mm system that never got as popular as it might have been because Olympus completely missed the boat about autofocus. On the other hand, it offered something different from the rest of the lineup... a tiny body and great ergonomics. Even though I scoff at the cloyingness of the retro styling, you can't deny that my E-P3 is a really sexy piece of camera hardware and that it draws your eye for that reason and that this E-M5 is going to give you exactly the same reaction.' I'm probably the only person who really really cares, but I want the "Live Bulb" mode.

I'm really annoyed and upset about something that is completely not my story to tell and, if anything, not about me. So I'm going to talk about something vaguely tangential to what I'm upset about that happened a good number of years ago instead. Which is one of my more intense brushes with mental illness that I made it through without most people I know actually realizing what was going on. And nobody knew for good reason. Somehow it's a subject that people don't want to talk about that much, as if you somehow catch mental illness like you catch other illnesses... but sometimes something needs to be said.

I try to avoid strictly duplicating any one particular artist or influence. Because that's just not fun. But it's quite daft to try and insist that you are fully original. Because, honestly, to go on about how original you are and how nobody else is like you is quite pretentious...

Even though I'm not part of the 1% that's being bandied about of late.... I come from a decent amount of privilege. I'm a white male. I'm interested in women. I come from a middle-class lifestyle. I happen to be pretty good at a subject that allows me to work in a job where I can make a decent amount of money. And I try to understand this is largely about privilege that I have been born into, not entirely something I've earned...

A brief statement on backpacks for hiking with photo gear from the Society Obsessed with Photography Backpack Perfection - http://www.joereifer.com/words...
I also like taking pictures while in the midst of a great adventure while also carrying heavy camera gear, so Joe's post is right up my alley...

Today felt like a bit of a musically-oriented day. I hadn't had time to sit down and practice much this past week so I've got a bit of catch-up, I saw Emilie Autumn play on Thursday, and the mood was just striking me.

The latest round of flickr layoffs, some chats, and some obsessive hacking a few weekends ago has caused a few thoughts to come to the forefront.

I'm going to charitably assume that I don't need to actually black out my site and that all of my readers are well aware of the SOPA/PIPA bills going through congress at the moment..

I'm not one for running. Especially on a treadmill. History has shown that, if given a choice between a treadmill and getting fat and depressed, I will choose to get fat. And I do like that my present state of fitness means that I can casually run a mile and not regret doing it, but I haven't traditionally sought it out.

We have a mailing list for my neighborhood. And we have a problem with cars in my neighborhood. See, we've got a grade school near the park.. and the park has a crossing guard. And so a few months ago the crossing guard was hit and injured by a car while trying to ensure that things were safe. And then a month or two later, a six year old got buzzed by a speeding car. Yesterday morning, a pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver.

I had some money to spend really working on my musical hardware over 2011, but I haven't really had the motivation, time, etc to actually use it...

I deliberately avoided posting this for a while because you need to understand the context behind it. But I always like to tell all of the stories that I've done...

I love my EP-3. Very much. And not very long after I got it, it turns out there's a giant pile of fiscal irregularities going on at Olympus and now the company might be in deep trouble, for reasons unrelated to actual photographic stuff selling or not selling. I'm having a bit of a gut check. If Olympus were gone tomorrow, the EP-3 is still a great camera and Panasonic still makes gear for the mount. So, at least, for the time being, I'm going where I've been going.

Much of modern Christian ethics are oriented towards convincing that your middle-class life that is a life of privilege to most of the rest of the world and is completely unsustainable long-term is actually a reasonable, rational, responsible, humble lifestyle that God has given you.

Peavey Mystic, made in USA. That's all I know so far. I dunno what a T-60 is. A buddy gave it to me for hooking him up with some gear a couple of years ago.

Rob, I hope I never look like Dio (RIP). What other bands used this axe, I wonder?
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
wait, someone in DIO used this model? i thought DIO-era Campbell was Charvel/Jackson and Goldie was B.C. Rich? (shows how little i know.)
- Hieronymous Boosh
I don't think anyone in DIO used this (that I know of). I was just dusting-off my '80's rock vernacular. *slams a shot of Everclear*
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Not sure I wanna mess with down-tuning on it yet, since I am not mechanically inclined. Hard enough to get in tune with standard tuning.

just drop D, that's only the low E string. c'mon, all the cool kids are doing it!

wedge a piece of scrap wood under the back of the floating bridge plate and tighten the claw springs in back til they cry for their mommies. you'll be golden.

I've kinda wanted a hair-metal funky-shaped guitar for a long long time. I was toying with getting a BC Rich bass when I was buying my bass, but the Ibanez sounded better...

One of the things that motivated me to take the jump to Micro Four Thirds was hearing the rumors from fairly plausable sources that Nikon was making a mirrorless camera with a sensor smaller than the 4/3rds sensor.... because I think that the 4/3rds sensor is about as small as you really want to go. So it's interesting, in that it will probably cause the other players to improve, but I think Nikon is working too hard to make a SLR that deliberately doesn't compete with their dSLR lineup. It kinda reminds me of the Nikon Pronea SLR series, actually.
