Charles Darwin film 'too controversial for religious America' - Telegraph
"Creation, starring Paul Bettany, details Darwin's "struggle between faith and reason" as he wrote On The Origin of Species. It depicts him as a man who loses faith in God following the death of his beloved 10-year-old daughter, Annie. The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere on Sunday. It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
"However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution. Movieguide.org, an influential site which reviews films from a Christian perspective, described Darwin as the father of eugenics and denounced him as "a racist, a bigot and an 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder". His "half-baked theory" directly influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and genetic engineering", the site stated. " - William Harryman
what a sad statement on American culture (or lack thereof) - William Harryman
Some body is screwing the number up. They must be doing the polling at churches. The theocracy people are still trying to take over. Seeing how people are going to those meetings, we peobably deserve it on some level, I don't want it - bet 90% don't either. - ThatDBD
the # on evolution is correct - more people believe in satan and angels than believe in evolution - William Harryman
Even realizing that that the two concepts are not mutually exclusive, it is a very sad statement on scientific literacy in the US. And sad, culturally, that films like this get the axe but we have no problem showing things like Expelled. - LogEx
I can't believe that 61% of Americans are that stupid. I think the number provided in the article doesn't pass the smell test. It would be interesting to know the origins of that statement -- what the questions were for the poll, how it was conducted. - Brian Sullivan
I've seen numbers more like 50%. We can argue the details, but the conclusions are the same. - LogEx
LogEx - what conclusions? - I am thinking the reasons why the film does not have a distributor are more related to actual money negotiations than anything to do with how many Americans "believe" in evolution. - Brian Sullivan
LogEx - you are are correct - it's about 50/50 - http://12ty.sl.pt - "The rejection of evolution is not entirely a result of a lack of awareness of the scientific consensus on the subject. More people believe that scientists agree on evolution (62%) than accept the idea themselves (51%), and this is true even among white evangelical Protestants (43% think scientists agree on evolution but only 28% believe in evolution). Nor is the rejection of evolution a result of political or ideological beliefs. While Republicans and conservatives are more apt than Democrats or liberals to deny that evolution occurs, this correlation is mostly a result of the large number of evangelicals with creationist views in the Republican Party and among conservatives." The overall % of Christians who believe in evolution is around 30% it would seem - William Harryman
Brian, the article clearly implies that the film is not being pickled up due to controversy (though that ultimately affects profit expectations), but my comments were really more about how far we have to go yet to get this population educated. - LogEx
Wow, Jennifer Connelly's Wikipedia page describes this as a thriller, really? (To the left of her picture bottom of the breakthrough section http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ) - James "Jimminy" Fuller
Statistics can be made up on the spot, Many so many do it. Because - hey prove they are wrong?? But if the political arena is an example - ignorance runs deep and wide two. Sss funny that many people turn to a spiritual connection thing to solve a real world problem, rather than sit down and take it apart to see what the best solution for the pieces are? A wonder about many people you know??? - ThatDBD
