That Crazy Spiral in the Sky? It Might Be Real | Wired Science | Wired.com
"When we saw the pictures of the spiral in the Norwegian sky this morning, we immediately wrote it off as an impressively elaborate, funny-looking but well-executed hoax. You probably did too, even after reading Google Translated reports in Norwegian newspapers. Now, SpaceWeather.com, a trusted source run by NASA science writer Tony Phillips, says the “evidence is mounting” that the sky show was real. And not just real, but the product of a Russian missile launch. “A rocket motor spinning out of control could explain the spiral pattern, so this explanation seems plausible, although it has not yet been confirmed,” Phillips wrote A space animator even took the time to use a 3-D modeling program to show how the rocket motor could have made what seems a bizarrely regular shape. Although, the YouTube poster, unmannedspaceflight, made sure to note the rendering is “not an official answer.”" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

"Think happy thoughts is common wisdom that many people rely on for getting through feelings of depression, and painful or difficult situations. Often, people try to be happy when they're not; hoping that they will become the happy person they're impersonating. This folk wisdom is backed up by science-to a point. Volumes of research have shown that how we present ourselves affects the way others perceive us, as well as the way we view ourselves. For example, a typically unhappy man might see himself as happier after enjoying an evening out with the guys, who will then also see him as happier. Research on self-presentation spans social and developmental psychology, sports psychology, organizational behavior and management, marketing, political science, and sociology. It was made popular in Erving Goffman's The Presentation of Self in Everyday life (1959). However, when considering how you shape your self-view, there are limits to what you will believe about yourself, no matter how you behave or what you tell yourself. In fact, trying to force yourself to be happier can backfire." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

"The Parliament of the World's Religions has brought together representatives from 80 nationalities and more than 220 faith traditions for seven days of debate and dialogue. The organisers hope that chance meetings in lifts, along with attendance at the 600 different formal meetings, will lead to new partnerships between religious groups. This is only the fifth such "parliament" to take place. A groundbreaking meeting between religious leaders from different parts of the world happened in Chicago in 1893. One hundred years later, a group of inter-faith practitioners decided to hold another such meeting, and they have happened almost every five years since then." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
"The parliament could hardly be accused of failing to account for the broadest possible range of spirituality and religious experience. Pagans, Zoroastrians, and even atheists make up the rich mix of perspectives. Organisers have faced some criticism for giving a platform to the Church of Scientology - which some accuse of being more of a business than a conventional religion. But this is an event which is prepared to given even the most unusual new religious movements a fair hearing. " - William Harryman

'Biggest Loser' Winner Drops 239 Pounds In 7 Months [Don't try this at home . . .]
"'Biggest Loser' winner Danny Cahill appeared on the Today show Wednesday morning to talk about his incredible weight loss--239 pounds in less than seven months. Cahill, 40, went from 430 pounds to 191 over the course of the season, dropping 55.58 percent of his original body weight, which was a record for the show. "When I met my wife, I was 175 pounds," he told Ann Curry. "That was about 18, 19 years ago. And I slowly ballooned up to 430 pounds." Cahill's wife, Darci, lost 60 pounds at the same time as a show of support. She and their two young children cheered him on when he was announced as the winner on the emotional finale of 'The Biggest Loser' Tuesday night. "One of my main inspirations for trying out for the show was that I'm a father," he said. "And I want to see my kids grow up. I don't want to leave my wife without a husband."" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
I'm happy for him - but this show, inspiring as it is, creates some very unreal expectations for average people needing to lose fat and get healthy - we don't have someone making our meals as healthy as possible nor the free time to exercise 3-6 hours a day - yet, we can get there, too, but it takes longer than 7 months - William Harryman

"Lance Armstrong has issued a concession speech to old man time, and in essence also is saying he won't ever win another Tour de France. While talking to England's Guardian about his new Radio Shack team, Armstrong said yesterday that he no longer will be the lead rider. And if you aren't your team's lead rider, you certainly aren't going to top the Tour. "Those days are gone," said Armstrong of his seven Tour championships from 1999-2005. From fat to gym rat, woman loses 200 pounds - CNN.com
"These days, Becky Griggs starts her morning well before the sun comes up, in time to meet her clients at the gym at 5:30. It's a big change from six years ago, when she was 352 pounds and, as she calls it, engaged in a "slow form of suicide." She said that growing up, she was always the pudgy kid, but in hindsight, she was only slightly overweight. In her mind, though, she was a fat girl. "We are taught what is slim and skinny and pretty and right," she said recently by phone, "but in reality, what is fit and healthy is a different thing." Positive self-image means a lot, she said, and it has been the key to her losing more than 200 pounds." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
" How she lost it: "Calories in versus calories out," she said. Like many overweight people, she had a bookshelf of diet plan books. "Gaylene Meadows wears little black tops again. Cecilia Marosi lost her pregnancy pounds. David Ferrari's pants size went from 34 to 31. Mike Mainiero shed 19 pounds, and Mia Gates rediscovered her stunning cheekbones. Five friends, all fighting weight gain after 40, had their final weigh-in recently at Fitness 101 gym in Menlo Park after a six-week Thinner Winner challenge, which The Chronicle followed, to see who could lose the greatest percentage of body weight. Unlike their first trip to the scale, this time they lit up in smiles when trainer Mark Lipanski balanced the sliding weights. Ultimately, there was a tie. Meadows, who lost 11.5 pounds, edged out Mainiero, by losing one hundredth of a percent more of her total body weight. They split the $300 jackpot. Meadows said she was going to rush over to her favorite restaurant for chocolate fudge mocha cake. Mainiero said salad, then admitted probably also a glass of wine. Yeah, when I saw the before picture I thought some of them didn't need to lose anything, but it's their body - their decision. It could be that they "lost" it by just toning up and putting it someplace else. There are plenty of Americans who are slim but not fit (which is part of the reason I hate the assumption that fat is not fit. I have known some fat people who work out a helluva lot more than some thin people I know and could whip ass in a sprint). - Spidra Webster

If all you need to lose is 11lbs, then big whoop that you did it in 6 weeks. It doesn't make that much difference in your appearance or health if that's all you've got to lose. I'd have to look up the rest of the series to be sure, but I think it was just a story about a group of friends who decided to make a pact to lose weight together. JA, part of it is genetics, by nature I'm a skinny guy (about 160 lbs when I played soccer), small-boned and narrow hips - but I've been busting my ass for years to build muscle and stay lean, so I've put on about 40 lbs of muscle over a decade or so - at 42 yrs old, I'm more fit than I was at 18 - William Harryman
Generally thin on my end, but not doing myself favors with my diet and generally slack exercising habits. Kudos to you and your fitness level @ 42! :) - JA Castillo

"We must realize, if tomorrow is going to look any better than today, that the currency for compassion isn’t what someone else does, right or wrong—it is the very fact that that person exists. Commitment to the possibility of kindness cannot be discarded as foolish or irrelevant, even in troubling times when we often can’t find easy answers. If we abandon the force of kindness as we confront cruelty, we won’t learn anything to take into tomorrow—not from history, not from one another, not from life. - Sharon Salzberg, The Force of Kindness" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

"Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, primarily found in fish and seafood, may have a role in colorectal cancer prevention, according to results presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference, held Dec. 6-9, 2009, in Houston. "Experimental data have shown benefits of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in colorectal carcinogenesis, ranging from reduced tumor growth, suppression of angiogenesis and inhibition of metastasis," said Sangmi Kim, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, N.C. "Our finding of inverse association between dietary intakes of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and distal large bowel cancer in white participants adds additional support to the hypothesis."" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

"In yet another blow to positive thinking supporters, scientists have found that a bad mood can improve people's memory and judgment, and make them less reliant on stereotypes. According to Miral Fahmy of Reuters, researchers first put their subjects in sad or happy moods by having them watch movies or recall positive or negative memories. Then they conducted several different experiments. They found that people in bad moods were less likely to believe urban myths or rumors, and were also less likely to make decisions based on racial or religious prejudice. They were better at remembering events they'd seen, and better at persuasive writing. Study author Joseph Forgas wrote that a "mildly negative mood may actually promote a more concrete, accommodative and ultimately more successful communication style." He added, "positive mood is not universally desirable: people in negative mood are less prone to judgmental errors, are more resistant to eyewitness distortions and are better at producing high-quality, effective persuasive messages."" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

The Mindful Critic's Ten Best Films of the '00s | elephant journal
"For me as a cineaste, the ’00s will be remembered as the decade of nonfiction films. Indeed, many documentaries had incredibly powerful effects: Fahrenheit 9/11 did business worthy of a comic superhero film, and also put Michael Moore on the cover of Time Magazine and at the center of a U.S. Presidential election; An Inconvenient Truth helped propel the environmental movement forward and earn Al Gore a Nobel Peace Prize; Morgan Spurlock’s Oscar-nominated Super-Size Me appears to have spooked corporate behemoth McDonald’s into major menu changes; and others helped raise awareness and educate filmgoers about issues as important and diverse as the global sex trade (Born Into Brothels), torture (Taxi to the Darkside), government oppression (Burma VJ), and the ag industry (Food Inc.). Of course, many were just exceptional films in their own right–see below, where nonfiction titles dominated my list of the ten best films of the decade." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
"Perhaps moreso than the previous couple decades, the last ten years was also a period characterized by especially strong years (2005 and 2007 jump immediately to mind) and particularly bad years for film (I sat through most of last year’s releases waiting to be knocked out, and only a couple really did anything for me). "When it comes to the things we want, there always seems to be an endless list. No matter how many times we get something off that list, we add new things to replace it. In life, this drama of wanting and getting and wanting is all part of the dance. The things we want motivate us to get up and get them. And yet, at the same time, we can torment ourselves with our wanting, especially when we want something we can’t have or can’t find." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

"Despite all our efforts to advise this nation, America still throws out its recyclables, keeps its guns in unlocked cabinets where children have easy access, eats three times as much red meat as is recommended, watches seven hours of TV per day, swims less than 10 minutes after eating, and leaves halogen lights on while unattended," said Dr. Simon Peavy, vice-president of the National Association of Experts. "A placebo-controlled research study has discovered that a commonly-prescribed depression treatment — paroxetine (Paxil) — appears to have a specific effect on one’s personality. The researchers found similar personality-changing effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy as well. The researchers, led by Tony Tang from Northwestern University, sought to examine whether patients with clinical depression who were taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) report greater changes in two important personality components — neuroticism and extraversion — than patients receiving a sugar pill (an inert placebo). They also studied whether cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a commonly prescribed psychotherapy treatment for depression, had a similar effect." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. Note to Fellow Christians: Don't assume because someone says they're Christian that they represent represent "good" values. Many horrible deeds have been masterminded by self-professed Christians... deeds that line up better with the Satan camp than the Jesus camp. Just sayin'...
There was the whole Inquisition thing, for starters. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Just heard a radio quote from a Sarah Palin supporter. Her sum total rationale for supporting Palin? "Well, she's a Christian, so she has good values." - Mark Jepsen
Good point Mark. I've long struggled with this issue. It's likely at the root of why I don't want to call myself a Christian anymore and why I'm having difficulty finding the right church environment. - Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
Sad but true. - Bette Cooper
Mohandas Gandhi: "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." - William Harryman
...and lets 4get the Catholic scandel (sexual abuse) in Ireland. Just being a Christian is not enough..one needs to practice and have true human values. - Peter Dawson
All religions have had their share of extremists and hypocrites. We've got far too many people attaching certain evil actions to specific religions. True human values really have no religious boundaries or affiliations. - Allan Besselink
Well said Allan. Wish more people realized that. - Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
Let us remember that it was the disciples (students) of Christ that were first called Christians. If you are not disciplining yourself to follow Christ, then the label is completely useless. With that - I think we need (as Christians) to start being able to say that someone is NOT a Christian if the values do not match up with Jesus'. A person can CALL themselves a vegetarian, but if I see them wolfing down a Harris Ranch Filet Mignon, I can say that they are NOT, in fact, a vegetarian. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Yep, the problem is when you see intolerant, rude, disrespectful, and/or immoral people being seen as being Christian. Going to church doesn't make you a good person, any more than drinking diet soda makes you healthy. - Alex Scoble
And no, I'm not equating diet soda with church...just saying that actions make you a good person, not your ideals/beliefs. - Alex Scoble
Standing in a garage doesn't make you a car, either. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I really believe a lot of this discussion is directly pursuant to the "Sola Gracia" teachings that were a backlash against the Catholic church from the Reformation theologians. Martin Luther couldn't understand the book of James because it spoke about the idea that one cannot claim faith when actions do not back up that claim. "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has... more... - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Or sitting in a toilet make you a piece of shit - Fulaan, inna Hebel
As someone once said, Alex, "The Church is not a museum for saints; it's a hospital for sinners." - Glen Mistletoe
The problem I have with a lot of true Christians is that they do not distance themselves from the self-professed Christians who firmly belief that they are the only true Christians. It's a few bad apples to give the orchard a bad reputation. - Rene Wirtz
Alex, that sounds like a good thought, and on the outside of things it would seems so, but the truth is: none of us are good. Jesus did not come to make bad people good, He came to make dead people live. And when a person has that "life" on the inside of him or her, from that source come good works to others. Jesus gave us an interesting criteria about who were Christians: He said "If... more... - Melanie Reed
Faith without knowledge is trouble just waiting to happen. - Paul W. Homer
+1 Melanie - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Nor should one assume that if one has good values that they're necessarily a Christian, right? - Mr. Gunn
Sorry, Melanie, but you can believe all you want...that alone won't get you where you want to be. Belief without action is mental masturbation. Righteous action without belief is still righteous. - Alex Scoble
An action is just an action. Righteousness is in the eye of the beholder. - Akiva Moskovitz
/me smites Akiva for the common good. - Alex Scoble
I consider "Christianity" to be the most hypocritical of all faiths. And yes, I was raised as one. I fail to see where it has made most of those who profess to belong to it better people. - LANjackal
Christianity is what saved me from being a hypocrite. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Guess that makes you an expert then. - Akiva Moskovitz
Whoops I can see where this one is going. Hiding this topic. See y'all - LANjackal
I'd agree that Christianity probably hasn't made most of its followers better people. BUT the handful of guys I've met who truly, deeply came to understand Christ's teachings and rebuild their lives around them (in prison) are some of the most remarkable people I ever hope to meet. I'm still an atheist, but damn. "True" Christians, if that's what they're called, are really amazing people. (however I haven't met many!) - Lo is a Quitter
I agree, Lo...true Christians are amazing, because they practice what they preach. Unfortunately, there are a lot more that preach opposite to what they practice. - Alex Scoble
Fruit. You gotta look for the fruit. If there ain't any fruit, then you gotta wonder. - Mellissa Claus
All but the most insanely fundamentalist of Christians today would not recognize (and would likely be appalled by) the Christianity of 400, or even 200 years ago. The more influenced a flavor of Christianity has been by Enlightenment values, the more benign it is. - Christopher A Carr
Unfortunately the sign in front of a church in Cedar Rapids is gone now, but it said "God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts." - Rene Wirtz
++Rene - Bonnie Foster
Mark, yes I agree with your original statement. And conversely, many kind and self-sacrificing acts by real Christians go unnoticed by those around them. This is not an age hallmarked by appreciation for the quiet and discreet. God Himself works everyday to provide good things for us and how often do we notice or praise Him for it? Yet he does. And I know I could not make it without... more... - Melanie Reed
A guy claiming to be Christian may even be one of those Gnostic bastards, reading the wrong Gospels, am i right? :) - Eivind
And NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!!!! - Morgan Haley
Melanie: "God Himself works everyday to provide good things for us..." How do you know? That's just an empty assertion. - Christopher A Carr
:) Not empty, Christopher. I have made an assertion and it is based on firm evidence that I see everyday. And it is based on knowledge from those whom I trust who have also seen that evidence before me. - Melanie Reed
I think you may be confused as to what constitutes reliable "evidence." - Christopher A Carr
I may be confused as to what constitutes the inverse of an Augmented Matrix, but I am not confused in the least about the reliable evidence of a loving God. :) - Melanie Reed
Can you think of anything that would amount to evidence *against* the existence of a "loving god?" Anencephalic (brainless) infants, comes to mind... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped... - Christopher A Carr
Or, does the Semitic deity Yahweh have a special plan for brainless babies? - Christopher A Carr
What about parasitic twins? - Christopher A Carr
What about autistic? What about Asberger's? What about ugly? What about stinky? - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Christopher, Your second two points are closer to the truth, yes: He does have a plan for them. - Melanie Reed
Brainless babies can't do anything but respirate for a short time, then die. What could possibly be the point? - Christopher A Carr
The point is that you and I can't resurrect and heal them but God can. - Melanie Reed
Christopher, this life isn't"the point" at all. Those unfortunate souls will be taken care of where there is no sickness and pain. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Why cause a brainless baby to be birthed in the first place? - Christopher A Carr
He didn't. We did. - Melanie Reed
Everything that happens is part of your deity's plan, correct? - Christopher A Carr
What is your point? - Melanie Reed
So, original sin causes anencephaly? - Christopher A Carr
I thought your deity was in control of the universe? - Christopher A Carr
A single act of Disobedience led to that anencephaly and a host of other problems. - Melanie Reed
What a vulgar belief system. - Christopher A Carr
Christopher, the universe is not a playground, is it where we do what we want and someone makes it better and we go on doing whatever we want?. Would that be controlled or would it be tyranny? - Melanie Reed
An all-knowing deity knows everything, right? Including the fact that this "disobedience" would happen. So "he" is ultimately responsible for every single infant that is ever born without a brain above its face. - Christopher A Carr
Anger is understandable. But God is not to blame. That is our responsibility. And responsibility has hard consequences that tear at the heart. It hurts God. That is why He has made a way out for us. And that way is open to you and anyone else who wants to accept it. - Melanie Reed
You just avoided the issue by regurgitating religious platitudes. - Christopher A Carr
No, truth. - Melanie Reed
Let's say you're an all-powerful, all-knowing deity, and you decide to create a universe. If you're genuinely omniscient, you'll know everything that will ever transpire in this universe -- including who you'll be "required" to torture forever, and who you won't. Any such being is ultimately responsible for everything that occurs in its universe. - Christopher A Carr
Does your deity know if I'm going to be tortured forever? If not, he's not omniscient. - Christopher A Carr
What is torturing you, Christopher and do you want to DM me? - Melanie Reed
Your god sends people to be tortured forever in hell, yes? - Christopher A Carr
No, Christopher, we decide by our choices in regard to heaven or hell. But I think you may mean hell in another sense? - Melanie Reed
No, I mean hell in the Christian sense. Does your deity know ahead of time if I'll be going to hell or not? - Christopher A Carr
In other words, when Yahweh created my soul, did he know what would happen to it? - Christopher A Carr
Christopher, God has the ability to exercise foreknowledge but not the way you and I tend to think of it. His thinking is higher than ours and it allows for choice always as long as there is life! You have a choice. - Melanie Reed
Did he know if my soul would end up in hell when he created it? Yes, or no? - Christopher A Carr
I can not answer something that would put me in the position of judgment on you or anyone. That is not mine to decide. What God is saying is that your future is not cut off unless you make that choice. And God is giving you and me and everyone else the same opportunity to make that choice. - Melanie Reed
I'm not asking you to judge anything. Is it your understanding that your deity knows everything? - Christopher A Carr
God knows the beginning and the end of a matter. - Melanie Reed
All matters? - Christopher A Carr
What I have said above. - Melanie Reed
Are you are saying there are things that Yahweh doesn't know? - Christopher A Carr
No, I didn't say that. - Melanie Reed
He didn't immediately know where Adam and Eve was, when they hid in the Garden from what I've read. - Eivind
Then I am forced to conclude that Yahweh (were he to exist, a fact for which there is thankfully ZERO evidence) created the vast majority of souls for the purpose of having something to torture for an eternity. - Christopher A Carr
Elvind, He did know. - Melanie Reed
No Christopher, he created humans out of love. He took the risk to allow everyone to make their own choice, knowing some would not make a wise choice and cause pain to themselves and to others would result. - Melanie Reed
Ah, I see. He was just pretending he didn't know, like you do with small children. - Eivind
Elvind, no, he wanted to give them the chance to own up and be honest. - Melanie Reed
But Melanie, he knew when he made them who would and who would not make certain choices (so there's not really a choice). Why make a soul that's destined to be tortured forever? - Christopher A Carr
How do you know these things, Melanie? They're not explained in the Bible. - Eivind
Christopher, knowing what someone will do and causing them to do it are two different things. This is why God warns Cain in the beginning: "That thou mayest not sin" Choice. Always. Choice. There is always hope, Christopher, and the fact that you are asking gives me hope! - Melanie Reed
Elvind, yes, its in Genesis. - Melanie Reed
I always wonder about the fate of otherwise good people who believe other things, or are never even exposed to the One system (whichever one that may be) that could save them. - LogEx
Melanie, but if you know that someone will do a thing that leads them to eternal torture, why create them in the first place? - Christopher A Carr
LogEx, God gives all of us an opportunity no matter where we are to make a choice, - Melanie Reed
Well, LogEx, I have an answer for you that comes right out of the book that claims to be the Authority. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage... says that all people will be judged fairly and based on their own deeds. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
So, I'm set then. - LogEx
If you've never erred. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Melanie, not in my copy. God asks Adam where he is. He answers, rats out Eve, and then God makes them clothes (and takes away the snake's limbs?). The next chapter is about Cain and Abel. - Eivind
Christopher, maybe I wasn't very clear: the concept of choice means that you and I and everyone else have the ability to be influenced for good or for bad. - Melanie Reed
I think Christopher is assuming God precludes free will. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Elvind, yes, God asks, not to find out what He already knows, but to give Adam and Eve a chance to confess what they have done which is what you would do for someone you loved and respected. - Melanie Reed
Yahweh: I'm going to make souls x, y, and z -- souls x and y will need to be tortured forever; I know this because I know how they will behave, because I know everything. But I'm going to create them anyway. In fact, the vast, vast majority of all the souls I create will "chose" to be burned in hell forever, but I'm OK with that, and will create them anyway. ...nice deity you got there. - Christopher A Carr
Melanie, that's just projecting onto God what you would have done. It doesn't say anywhere that's why he did it? - Eivind
Elvind, I don't think I would have handled it so well as God. ;) His response is in keeping with His character and nature. And the rest of scripture provides testimony . - Melanie Reed
Melanie is quite good at weaselisms. - Christopher A Carr
Ok. It's Eivind btw. (no worries, VERY common mistake :) ) - Eivind
Is there more than one Way? If so, what are they? If not, what about the other 6 billion people? http://www.adherents.com/Religio... - LogEx
I guess that depends. Is there an absolute value for "right?" I'm going to say there is. I believe that Charles Manson was wrong for what he did. There's no gray area there. Now that I've established that there is an absolute value for "right," then it behooves me to investigate why. - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Eivind, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to miss-spell your name. - Melanie Reed
Hehe, almost every English speaker who sees it in writing makes that mistake :) - Eivind
Lewis (C.S.) decided that he felt that "right" and "wrong" were hard-wired and not up to the whims of the individual. In doing that, he felt he had to investigate the ... Author, if you will of those immutable laws (along with gravity, et al). He then looked at the myriad of religious texts that claimed to be "the way" and finally settled on the bible. Christianity was just the end of his search for the reason for "right." - Jeremy (cropmarks)
Nothing supernatural in the way of an "Author" is required to account for our preferences for some social behaviors over others. Foundationaly, we are a species of highly social primate. On top of that, moral and ethical mores evolve (in a memetic, cultural evolutionary sense) over time. ...Our species has been on this planet for 200,000 or so years. It seems rather odd to me that Yahweh only took an interest many thousands of years after the relatively recent emergence of agriculture. - Christopher A Carr
Melanie has DMed me. Evidently she is "troubled" for me, and wants to know if I need her help. Arrogant? Sanctimonious? I don't even know what to call that. Amazing. - Christopher A Carr
I assume practical tasks are out of the question? - Eivind
Practical tasks? My house's gutters need replacing. - Christopher A Carr
Well, ask for help with that :) - Eivind
Not a bad idea. - Christopher A Carr
I'm afraid she would only offer to pray that they be miraculously fixed. - Christopher A Carr
Why does that make you afraid? You're certainly brave enough to call out someone's private messages in a public forum; surely having someone pray for you wouldn't be that bad. - Glen Mistletoe
Pretty sure Christopher didn't mean that kind of "afraid." - Chieze Okoye
Glen: Feel free to pray for my gutters. - Christopher A Carr
May I suggest you pray to Vishnu, The Lord of Maintenance. - http://www.saigan.com/heritag... - Eivind
Wow! Apparently this thread had legs while I was out! I haven't read most of the comments, but I should perhaps interject something here that I should've been stated up front... my initial statement, though directed at Christians, can surely be applied to ANY religion, and indeed, to any belief system. (This would included, for example, political beliefs. Hint hint.) Jerks and... more... - Mark Jepsen
Said another way... when any individual or group starts telling you that God is on their side (instead of the other way around) it would be wise to gather your loved ones and any belongings you can carry, a find refuge as you prepare to see the worst that man is capable of. - Mark Jepsen
Personally I direct All Prayer to "Oh Lord" which I find to include All passing Gods & deities excluding none. Besides that moment of suspension of disbelief this has sufficed for many years to satisfy. Now that I am older & have experienced the world this seems to be overdoing it on my part. Troops Finding New Service as Teachers - NYTimes.com
"In her last job in the Air Force, Tammie Langley gave prospective pilots and navigators an introduction to aeronautics. Four years later, Ms. Langley is in a different sort of classroom, teaching sixth graders in North Carolina everything from reading to math. The settings may be radically different, but Ms. Langley said the transition from teaching 22-year-olds to teaching 11- or 12-year-olds had been fairly seamless. “Either way, you still have to kind of wipe their noses a bit and kick them in the behind every now and then,” said Ms. Langley, who is in her second year at Kannapolis Intermediate School, about 25 miles north of Charlotte. Ms. Langley, 36, became a schoolteacher in large part because of Troops to Teachers, a federal program that, over 15 years, has helped about 12,000 former service members transition into second careers in the classroom." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

New Study Reveals Most Children Unrepentant Sociopaths | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
"MINNEAPOLIS—A study published Monday in The Journal Of Child Psychology And Psychiatry has concluded that an estimated 98 percent of children under the age of 10 are remorseless sociopaths with little regard for anything other than their own egocentric interests and pleasures. According to Dr. Leonard Mateo, a developmental psychologist at the University of Minnesota and lead author of the study, most adults are completely unaware that they could be living among callous monsters who would remorselessly exploit them to obtain something as insignificant as an ice cream cone or a new toy. "The most disturbing facet of this ubiquitous childhood disorder is an utter lack of empathy," Mateo said. "These people—if you can even call them that—deliberately violate every social norm without ever pausing to consider how their selfish behavior might affect others. It's as if they have no concept of anyone but themselves."" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

""The depths of depravity that these tiny psychopaths are capable of reaching are really quite chilling," Mateo added. "My best trip this year is a trip I had to take in my mind. Plans to attend a meditation retreat with the most kind and generous teacher imaginable were repeatedly thwarted and finally canceled. Four years ago, my first visit to this center, the landscape seemed unfamiliar and incongruous. American desert, cactus, scrub pine, red-robed monks navigating crumbling paths, and Tibetan prayer flags everywhere, snapping in the wind. Now I know it as the place on earth where the sky is as familiar as my heart." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

The Atheism crusade is encountering powerful and possibly pivotal resistance - By Robert Wright | Foreign Policy
"All the great religions have shown time and again that they're capable of tolerance and civility when their adherents don't feel threatened or disrespected. At the same time, as some New Atheists have now shown, you don't have to believe in God to exhibit intolerance and incivility. Maybe this is the New Atheists' biggest problem: As living proof that religion isn't a prerequisite for divisive fundamentalism, they are walking rebuttals to their own ideology." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
