Antiquaries and Archaists by Megan Aldrich and Robert J. Wallis, editors reviewed in the TLS by Rosemary Hill - http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol...
Antiquaries and Archaists by Megan Aldrich and Robert J. Wallis, editors reviewed in the TLS by Rosemary Hill
"Antiquaries and Archaists, a collection of essays based on a conference held at the Society of Antiquaries in the year of its 300th anniversary, triumphantly demonstrates the value of the kind of antiquarianism which takes the past seriously, even where it cannot take it literally. The work of a group of historians, archaeologists, sociologists and art historians, the conference had its origin in “a series of conversations held in several pubs”, followed by an interdisciplinary outing to inspect the White Horse at Uffington. The resulting papers range over time and space from Wiltshire to Beijing and from the early Middle Ages to the latest pagan goings-on at Glastonbury, sweeping with similar freedom across the boundaries of academic disciplines. Within its broadly chronological sequence the book describes not the conventional upward curve towards modern scientific materialism, but rather a wave pattern in our relations with the past of “enchantment, disenchantment and re-enchantment”." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Glimpse of the Day - On Ignorance
"As Buddha said in his first teaching, the root of all our suffering in samsara is ignorance. Ignorance, until we free ourselves from it, can seem endless, and even when we have embarked on the spiritual path our search is fogged by it. However, if you remember this, and keep the teachings in your heart, you will gradually develop the discernment to recognize the innumerable confusions of ignorance for what they are, and so never jeopardize your commitment or lose your perspective." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Looking for Meaning | Tricycle Magazine - Daily Dharma
"As long as we insist that meditation must be meaningful, we fail to understand it. We meditate with the idea that we’re going to get something from it—that it will lower our blood pressure, calm us down, or enhance our concentration. And, we believe, if we meditate long enough, and in just the right was, it might even bring us to enlightenment. All of this is delusion. - Steve Hagen, from “Looking For Meaning,” Tricycle, Fall 2003" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Brain Scans Show PTSD Not Just Mental - CBS News
"Powerful scans are letting doctors watch just how the brain changes in veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and concussion-like brain injuries - signature damage of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It's work that one day may allow far easier diagnosis for patients - civilian or military - who today struggle to get help for these largely invisible disorders. For now it brings a powerful message: Problems too often shrugged off as "just in your head" in fact do have physical signs, now that scientists are learning where and how to look for them. "There's something different in your brain," explains Dr. Jasmeet Pannu Hayes of Boston University, who is helping to lead that research at the Veterans Affairs' National Center for PTSD. "Just putting a real physical marker there, saying that this is a real thing," encourages more people to seek care." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
some people in the field have known this for years - in survivors of long-term abuse, the amygdala is enlarged (anger, reactivity) and the hypothalamus is shrunk (poor affective control, memory issues) - caused by too much cortisol for too long - the result is a volatile person living in flight/fight/freeze mode ALL of the time, much like those soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan - William Harryman

Researchers Study Effect of Cinnamon Compounds on Brain Cells / November 9, 2009 / News from the USDA Agricultural Research Service - http://www.ars.usda.gov/is...
Researchers Study Effect of Cinnamon Compounds on Brain Cells / November 9, 2009 / News from the USDA Agricultural Research Service
"Cell-culture studies looking into how compounds in cinnamon extract affect brain cells are being conducted by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists. The researchers have reported findings that the compounds studied prevented isolated brain cells from swelling, one of the many abnormal conditions resulting from traumatic brain injury and stroke due to impaired blood flow to the brain. Brain swelling is a condition in which fluid either accumulates within brain cells or is retained in blood vessels that form around brain cells. The mechanisms underlying cell swelling in stroke are not clearly understood, but may be due in part to a membrane within brain cells not working properly." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

DailyOM - Echoes of Happiness: Belly Laughs - http://www.dailyom.com/article...
DailyOM - Echoes of Happiness: Belly Laughs
"As children, we laugh hundreds of times each day, delighted by the newness of living. When we reach adulthood, however, we tend to not allow ourselves to let go in a good belly laugh. Inviting laughter back into our lives is simply a matter of making the conscious decision to laugh. Though most of us are incited to laugh only when exposed to humor or the unexpected, each of us is capable of laughing at will. A laugh that comes from the belly carries with it the same positive effects whether prompted by a funny joke or consciously willed into existence. When our laughter comes from the core of our being, it permeates every cell in our physical selves, beginning in the center and radiating outward, until we are not merely belly laughing but rather body laughing." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Just left a message for pediatrician. Looking to find out if tantrums are normal for his age/personality or if he needs to be assessed for delays/issues.
3 1/2. His tantrums are excessive, last 1.5-3 hours long and they are violent. - Katie: Witch Of The West
just give me fiiivvvve minutees alone with him ~ no joking ~ there's no harm in getting it checked out - sofarsoShawn
Age 3 is the worst for tantrums. I call it the "Terrible Threes" not the Twos - Shey, Jamaican of FF
My son had those issues. He's fine, but can be emotional at times. Wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. - Eric @ CS Techcast
Thanks everyone. I think I'm just at the end of my rope. So tired from the lack of sleep and the anger in his tantrums is soooooo extreme, I don't get it. I'm trying not to feel hopeless but that's where I am :o( - Katie: Witch Of The West
Shey: My SO calls it the "Terrible T's" and he includes twos, threes, and teens. - Katie: Witch Of The West
where is supernanny when you need her - VAL D.
Hahahha! His teacher mentioned her the other day. Wish I had TV to watch a show and get an idea. Hope the pedi will point me in the right direction for help. - Katie: Witch Of The West
What makes this worse, too, is that my 3.5 yo looks like he's 5 so people who care for him tend to forget that he's a little guy still and get frustrated when he throws a fit. - Katie: Witch Of The West
Hugs, that sounds really, really hard. We had tantrums at that age but they were short. Don't bemoan not having Supernanny - her solutions are one size fits all so mostly useless. What do you do when he throws his fits? Have you tried talking to him when he's calm and happy, about the need to find a solution to this problem? Jane Nelsen recommends creating a special place where a kid... more... - Laura Norvig
Also, you are doing the right thing by seeking outside help! - Laura Norvig
Katie, he sounds like Cebastian at the age. I read this book and it helped me tremendously: http://www.goodreads.com/book... - Shevonne
What we've noted so far is this: When he's calm we discuss what's appropriate, how to get help (from teacher, adult in charge) when needed, and also consequences and rewards. So on the way to school, we talk about listening, using our words, asking teacher for help, and what are the consequences and rewards for those actions. - Katie: Witch Of The West
he can go all day and be fine (even though he's struggling in day care but that's a WHOLE other issue) and then go to bed like normal with no fight. But come 12:30 or 1:30 he wants in my bed. It'll start off calmly and we'll put him back, tuck him in and remind him he can come in when the alarm goes off and the sun is up. Otherwise he needs to be in his bed. This is all calmly discussed and even discussed before he goes to be around 8:00. But he's willful and stubborn and will continue to come into out bed. - Katie: Witch Of The West
But we're consistent even to our own demise. That's where the tussle ensues. He wants one thing and we're sticking to our guns. After an hour he gets frustrated that he isn't getting his way and then it's down hill from there. - Katie: Witch Of The West
Thanks Shev. I'll look into it. I have another book about high spirited children but I never get the time to read. - Katie: Witch Of The West
I think you might want to see a child psychologist rather than a pediatrician, but it's a good idea to get some outside input - William Harryman
Yep, Cebastian alright. Three is a horrible age. I always tell my friends that if I could skip from 1.5 to 4 years old, I will do it in a second. It's like Shey said. It' isn't the "Terrible Twos;" it's the "Terrible Threes." It will eventually get better. If you see Cebastian now, you wouldn't think he was the kid causing his mother and aunts to cry from exhaustion. - Shevonne
I know you have a lower voice, but sometimes with children like ours, you have to turn on what I call the "Exorcist" voice, so they know you mean business. - Shevonne
HAHAAH!! Shev for some reason that tickled me. An exorcist voice. - Katie: Witch Of The West
@William: I'm seeing pediatrician as a first step so that if necessary, I can get a referral to a psychologist within my insurance/doctor's team. - Katie: Witch Of The West
Wow, came into this thread late Katie - had this problem with one of my kids - definitely seek outside help - WH is right on the money. Child psychologist perhaps recommended by your pediatrician is a very good idea. You are not alone here! - triple t
Good to know I'm in good company. Some of this might have to do with a visit he had with his "dad" Thursday night. If that's the case, a counselor or psychologist to help us manage him after these visits would be welcomed. I'm just so so so tired, physically and emotionally. - Katie: Witch Of The West

I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience. - Micah Wittman
So I'm fairly balanced, it appears. I would imagine it's because I try to comment on every post I like. That's not always true, obviously. But mostly it is. - Hip-Hop in da House
Just clicking "Like" seems too easy. I feel like I should say something, too. - Hip-Hop in da House

'Just clicking "Like" seems too easy' — Jason, that's because you're from the Chatty-ite tribe :) - Micah Wittman
Thanks, ashish. - Micah Wittman
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff) - chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered? - Micah Wittman

that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while... - Bren, Photophobe
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically. - Micah Wittman
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better. - Bren, Photophobe
Thanks, Sarah, Tutivillus. - Micah Wittman

Truthdig - Ear to the Ground - Lousy Sex Life? Blame Plastic
"A new study has found that workers exposed to high levels of bisphenol A, a chemical widely used in the manufacture of plastics and other consumer goods, were at least four times likelier to report sexual problems, including erectile dysfunction. The men surveyed for Kaiser Permanente’s research were exposed to much larger quantities of the stuff than the average bottled water drinker, but the data appear to back up similar findings in animals. BPA is most commonly found in Type 7 and Type 3 plastic containers (look for the number inside the triangular recycling symbol on plastic products)" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Super Monkey Collider Loses Funding | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
"Congress voted Monday to cut federal funding for the superconducting monkey collider, a controversial experiment which has cost taxpayers an estimated $7.6 billion a year since its creation in 1983. The collider, which was to be built within a 45-mile-long circular tunnel, would accelerate monkeys to near-light speeds before smashing them together. Scientists insist the collider is an important step toward understanding the universe, because no one can yet say for certain what kind of noises monkeys would make if collided at those high speeds. "It could be a thump, a splat, or maybe even a sound that hasn't yet been heard by human ears," said project head Dr. Eric Reed Friday, in an impassioned plea to Congress. "How are we supposed to understand things like the atom or the nature of gravity if we don't even know what colliding monkeys sound like?" " - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Whenever these come through my feed, as they do, consistently like clock work, I just want to reach into the screen and punch you in the face. But like in a good way, I'm jealous at the depth of your routine & the fact that you have one ~ so in short good for you!!!! :) - sofarsoShawn
hey Shawn - to be fair, I am a personal trainer, so working in a gym makes it easy to get my workouts in - although, even before becoming a trainer, I have only missed more than three or four days without a workout a couple of times in 12+ years - William Harryman
DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Let's all publicly love each other for a bit. Say something nice about another friendfeeder.
Derrick is really cute in person, and he's funny as hell. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Nakachi is the bringer of words that brighten every day. - LogEx
I like that one, Logical Extremes. Again, the ability to like individual comments or posts would be good here. On topic, Ophelia, who is not that active on friendfeed but filters here anyway, is very good with words. Her updates both entertain and inspire me. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Monique posts something that makes me smile or chuckle just about every day she's active - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
FFing Enigma (aka Tina) is articulate, witty, and passionate. - Glen Campbell
RAPatton might be the best dad i've ever read about (my dad excluded of course) - Steve C
I still love Anika's avatar. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
I have to pick one? - Ha3rvey (more more more)
Nope. You can do it as many times as you like. For instance, I like how ha3rvey is funny and just a genuinely nice guy. :) - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Akiva's great pictures of Babby Audrey and Rochelle always make me smile (technically that was just about one person... sorta...) :D - Her Lindsay-ness
"i18n" is short for "internationalization", i+<18 letters>+n. By that schema, i80and saved us all a lot of screen real estate. - DGentry
What can I say about one person? Jason Toney's posts always elicit wonder and insight. RAPatton, I feel like is just full of awesome with his insight and approach to things. Haggis is a barrel of laughs. Steven Perez (when he's not fighting with conservatives) has spawned his own catchphrase. Nicholas K. is just about the most awesome single dad I've seen in a long time. Tina and... more... - Derrick
Victor Ganata is extremely intelligent, empathetic and articulate. He has always been exceptional in understanding others whether he agrees or disagrees with an opinion, and he always treats everyone with the utmost of respect. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
Jonathan Hardesty is funny and wants to have my babies. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I wish I could call everyone out. If we interact here on FF, take it on faith that I pretty much love you. - Derrick
You know me, I can't ever pick one person so I will simply say that every single person I subscribe to is smart, interesting, funny and make being on this crazy little site damn entertaining. Those that I've been lucky enough to get to know beyond the site prove to me every day that everyone who has ever said only weirdos and stalkers are online are just smoking crack. - ♥patricia♥
I'm with you there, Derrick. There are so many people here who are funny, smart, interesting, entertaining, etc. There are even a couple who make me blush. NOT NAMING ANY NAMES. And then there's that cilantro dude. - Ha3rvey (more more more)
Steven Perez is a funny guy, and can cheer me up when I'm down. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
My first public skype call was with Tad, Glen and the Amber - a lovely conversation with great people. Tad was bold enough to live stream his workstation software install expedition and is a friend to all; Glen is chalk full of incisive wit and has an easy going conversational style; and the Amber was open enough to admit she's shy but worked up the courage to get on the call anyway. Like I said, great people, and quite representative of all the good people in the land of friendfeed. - Micah Wittman
Derrick tells the truth! There's so many awesome people I can't choose just one. - Rodfather
Anika Malone is as straight a shooter as there ever has been She will always tell you the truth about what she thinks. I find that to be a quality many people could use more of, and I respect her, and love her for it. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
I can't believe that there are people I'm not subbed too. - Derrick
Shevonne is a hottie, and not because she is nice to look at. - Amber, Random Time Lord
Damn, Amber. LOL - Derrick
I love how Amber unabashedly states things. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
I wrote in my 25 things that one of my laments in life is finding a woman who challenges me mentally. Tina does just that. With aplomb. There have been countless times that I was sure of myself and she will make a comment that causes me to completely rethink the issue entirely. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
Louis Gray got me to think about just being myself and not allowing the tech heavy side of FF to intimidate me. - Derrick
Michael W May and RAPatton have the best tastes in music I've ever seen in my life, I applaud and covet their music collection. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Derrick and Mona and Akiva and Rochelle and Jandy and many of you make me laugh every day. - Louis Gray
Derrick is the shizzle, treated me like an old friend. That's one of 500 nice things I have to say about other Friendfeeders. - Eric @ CS Techcast
Rachel Fox takes outstanding pictures. - Louis Gray
My little pea... fierce as a woozle, indeed! So quiet and unassuming... But so poignant at exactly the right moment. The exactly right phrase to every situation. If she can' brighten your mood, nobody else can, either. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
Johnny is just plain awesome - Amber, Random Time Lord
DYSP! Steven and I disagree here and there but in the end I absolutely admire his sense of humor and his passion. A truly A-Lister here on Friendfeed. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
Alex Scoble, Cristo, Chris White and Thomas Hawk vigorously defend their views, but never take it (or make it) personal. - Kevin Fox
Whew... Only 642 more to go... - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
I love all of you here making my day brighter :) - BeeLing
Thomas Hawk makes me want to be a better photographer. - Ha3rvey (more more more)
Derrick and Monique would be my road dawgs if we lived in the same city - Amber, Random Time Lord
Robert Scoble is on a mission to close down every other social network. - Louis Gray
Tad is fun to chat with, even during the awkward moments - Amber, Random Time Lord
I love the fact that Rochelle always likes the same stuff I like. And that Akiva and I both grew up in southeast Texas. - Glen Campbell
I think, most of all, Derrick has redefined what it means to be yourself. I have had the distinct honor of meeting him and what you see here is Derrick. He shares his joys with us, which is easy, but he also shares his pain with us. I must say that I am jealous of his ability to be open, and I admire him immensely. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from fftogo
I love everyone who gives me a reason to drop my pants... that and Josh Haley. - Johnny Worthington
I love johnny dropping his pants....o_O - WorldofHiglet
Pea has a lovely voice and makes days better. - Amber, Random Time Lord
Bow to Joe Pierce and his movie prowess. - Amber, Random Time Lord
*drops pants* - Johnny Worthington
edythe, Morton, and Kol for liking so much, they allow everyone to notice each other. - Rodfather
I can't thank April Russo enough for all the help she has given me here at Friend Feed. She is awesome in my book. - Brent - Long Live Rock

darren heydon is good for warm fuzzies. - Trish Haley
I can't pick out one specific person. I can name a few names, but there's a specific reason why I am subscribed to every person I am subscribed to. Jandy and Lindsey all kinds of rock, fellow geek chic - so they have to. :P Johnny keeps me cracking up. Zee is my boy for sure, we'd make a ton of trouble if we lived near each other. Monique is straight up, which is win. I can't keep naming people...it would...take up way too much time. I am sure I will though. - Candace

Josh and Trish and Tina and Yolanda and Derrick and DYSP Steven make me smile and laugh when I need it. Johnny Worthington always hears when I post an "OMG help me!" kind of thing, and he usually responds with the most absurd and sweet message. Also, he has haiku battles with me, which is all kinds of WIN. Mark W and Fierce Lindsay make me smile, and Mark VandenBerg makes me LOL. And there are so many other sweet and funny and clever people who fill my day here on FriendFeed... thank you to everyone! - Ladybug Heather

I love the wit of many but must say MVB can make me spit drinks at the glance of his posts. - Janet
I don't even know where to begin. There are so many people who I love for different reasons. Hmmm..My LAers (Derrick, Amani, Derrick, Anika, Monique, Edythe) because they are always cooler than cool. My New Yorkers (Mona and Cee Bee) because they bring the versatility. My mothers (Abby, Rochelle, Jen, Katie) because they always remind me how great is it to be a mom. RAPatton because... more... - Shevonne
That's OK, Shevonne. I'm sure it will come to you. :D - Steven Perez from IM

I enjoy everyone, but like Thomas Hawk's photos and philosophies the most, and learn more from Louis Gray than anyone else. - jcunwired
Returning the love to Amani and Abby -- you guys are two of the most honest and kindest souls on FF. PS: Thanks for putting up with my Twitter-heavy stream while I'm in school for this year. Eventually, I'll have time to interact more again. xoxo - Lisa L. Seifert

I love Akiva for bringing the comedy and the pain. I love Derrick for being as real in the OSH parking lot as he is on FF. I love Monique for being the Pied Piper of the interwebz and helping me recover my sanity. I love James for being so gently poetic. I love Rahsheen for the soft porn videos he always takes in bed. Nakachi's Facebook status updates blow my mind - Rodfather

This past week has not been a very good one for me and I might have lost it completely if it hadn't been for Johnny, Steven and Derrick for all dropping their pants for me. I love that there are people on here, that I have never met, that care enough to make me laugh when I am feeling way crappy. <3 And of course there are more, just giving props to those that made me feel better this week :) MWAH! - Penny

I had no idea when I started this thread that it would blow up like this. I think this is a clear example of the value of friendfeed: the relationships we build. Sure, we have differing interests, politics, social situations and opinons, but at the end of the day, what we come here for are the people. No one exists in a vacuum, and if they did, they probably wouldn't have a friendfeed... more... - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE

Large Hadron Collider: Damaged by a Time-Traveling Bird? - TIME
"Sometime on Nov. 3, the supercooled magnets in sector 81 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), outside Geneva, began to dangerously overheat. Scientists rushed to diagnose the problem, since the particle accelerator has to maintain a temperature colder than deep space in order to work. The culprit? "A bit of baguette," says Mike Lamont of the control center of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which built and maintains the LHC. Apparently, a passing bird may have dropped the chunk of bread on an electrical substation above the accelerator, causing a power cut. The baguette was removed, power to the cryogenic system was restored and within a few days the magnets returned to their supercool temperatures." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
"While most scientists would write off the event as a freak accident, two esteemed physicists have formulated a theory that suggests an alternative explanation: perhaps a time-traveling bird was sent from the future to sabotage the experiment. Bech Nielsen of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and Masao Ninomiya of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kyoto, Japan, have... more... - William Harryman

The "Helper" Syndrome | Tricycle Magazine - Daily Dharma
"One of the themes of practice is the gradual movement from a self-centered life to a more life-centered one. But what about our efforts to become more life-centered—doing good deeds, serving others, dedicating our efforts to good causes? There’s nothing wrong with making these efforts, but they won’t necessarily lead us to a less self-oriented life. Why? Because we can do these things without really dealing with our “self.” Often our efforts, even for a good cause, are made in the service of our desires for comfort, security, and appreciation. Such efforts are still self-centered because we’re trying to make life conform to our picture of how it ought to be. It’s only by seeing through this self—the self that creates and sustains our repeating patterns—that we can move toward a more life-centered way of living. - Ezra Bayda, from “The ‘Helper’ Syndrome,” Tricycle, Summer 2003" - William Harryman from Bookmarklet
