I've been saying for years that Fred is one of the very few VCs who 'gets it.' Not in the I'm a cool startup sense, but in the macro sense. I pitched Union Square Ventures some years ago and they turned me down. We eventually found financing elsewhere, but in the end, their comments were valid and we failed in that market. Is Google Search Thinning?

Ironically, my FF posts are indexed on Google... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Do you use an API? - Andrew Baron
My twitter posts are archived... - Ben Jackson via twhirl
FriendFeed indexing in google - Kamiar Nadimi
With API's, scrappers and 3rd parties I know the data can be indexed, but as a result of needing these, most of the data on the social networks are not indexed due to disallowing of search index spiders. - Andrew Baron
We're trying the tackle the problem. We recently launched some kind of a local alpha (only in Serbia, where we are developing the engine), and so far so good. More details soon. (: http://www.edgios.com/ - Mladen Srdić
Andrew, my understanding is everything on FF is indexed except private feeds and rooms. For instance, a search on your name for just this site produces over 18k results http://www.google.com/search?h... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
::Waves magic wand and does his best Prof. Snape::: Rev-EAL your SEC-retsssss....... - (teh)Hussein

FriendFeed's main robots.txt file, accessed from a non-logged-in browser yields only "User-agent: * Disallow: /account/ Disallow: /iphone/" - £ogical €xtremes

Google does index FriendFeed, I've found specific posts quite often. - xero
Google indexes Twitter too. - Robert Scoble

6.3 million FF pages indexed by Google http://www.google.com/search?h... A similar search for Twitter yields over 10 million pages - Mike Doeff
Please yall, NO MORE comments confirming the indexing. I got that I made a mistake on that, I fixed it above, left several comments here and adjusted the post which most people have not read. I admit I did a bad job trying to make this point, but the point remains, re: Myspace, Facebook and other which comprise MAJOR datasets. Also, all of the link juice IS NOT going to me. Twitter, FF, etc all get the credit and authority. This is a whole other story which is also a decentralization problem. - Andrew Baron
While I understand the arguments in your post, it would be crazy for Friend Feed and others not to allow indexing by google, as it means that they are cutting off a massive potential audience. - Sam via twhirl
Andrew, absolutely... your points on walled gardens and link juice are spot on. BTW, I'm no expert on robots.txt files, but the syntax " Disallow: /* " may be ambiguous. To disallow entire server, should just be " Disallow: / " Wikipedia says "The first version of the Robot Exclusion standard does not mention anything about the "*" character in the Disallow: statement. Modern crawlers like Googlebot and Slurp recognize strings containing "*", while MSNbot and Teoma interpret it in different ways. [5]" - £ogical €xtremes
To deal better with Twitter and FF data then, Google should maintain a separate search. They separate their news and blog posts to make discovery easier. They should separate social network data and allow you to sort by most recent entries. - Andrew Baron
Hmmmm.... while it would make a ton of sense, Andrew, I can also see people getting up in arms about it. Kinda like a one-stop stalker shop... Not that the actual Google search is any different, just that it's more likely to be 'watered down' - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
I cant see people getting concerned about that. This is no different than search.twitter.com - Andrew Baron
I did a post about how google needs to change in order to help with the noise of the net.. and boy is it getting noisier. For example, due to the sheer amount of spam on google I tend to not use it when looking for anything that is related to a product. The major search engines certainly need to get smart about their search mechanism. http://www.alphaxion.com/?p=59 if you feel like burning a few brain cells :) - alphaxion
I think you learn quickly that there are certain phrases and words that are just unsearchable on Google. I think the future of search is in developing specialized engines for different purposes. - Victor Ganata

I discovered that Flickr strips out ALL of the metadata in all of the reduced size versions of your uploaded images. The original sized image you upload still contains the metadata, but the medium, small and thumbnail versions of your images have NONE of the original metadata, that includes your copyright notice and contact info. This violates Section 1202 of the DCMA which states "No person shall, without the authority of the copyright owner or the law-- `(1) intentionally remove or alter any copyright management information" http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/...: - Jeff P. Henderson via Bookmarklet
Knowing this, Flickr is effectively aiding and abedding image thieves! - Jeff P. Henderson
This has been known for some time. Both Flickr and Zooomr are doing it. Not sure about SmugMug or other photo sharing sites, since I haven't used them. - Raoul Pop
I also think it's somewhat random at both sites. Not sure if it has to do with their resizing routine or not, but I have seen it happen and not happen to photos on both sites. - cmiper
iPernity does it as well. - cmiper
Looks like Zooomr has it in smaller images but SmugMug doesn't - Dave Cohen
Dave, if they have it now, they didn't have it back when I was using it. - Raoul Pop
oh I'm sure it didn't used to be there which is probably why cmiper said it was random. they seem to have it on new photos, didn't check any old ones though - Dave Cohen
Dave, it's random (or maybe depends on some factor) as I mentioned with Zooomr (I think flickr as well)...check this image posted within the last hour, the smaller versions don't have it, the original does. http://www.zooomr.com/photos/i... - cmiper
I've known about this for a while now. I've recently started submitting photos that at 100% equate to the medium size display on Flickr. This is the most common size displayed on flickr and blogs. Flickr has issues and they don't seem to be addressing them. - Jim Goldstein
@Raoul, Zooomr used to do the same thing, but as of this morning when I checked, all of the image sizes except the 75x75 square thumbnail image contained all of the metadata. So it looks like Zooomr fixed this issue somewhere along the line. - Jeff P. Henderson
I have not checked enough of my new and old images to determine if this is random on either Zooomr or Flickr or not. Bottom line it is inexcusable for them to remove any of the metadata from any of the versions of our images that they host. I see not benefit for them to remove it. - Jeff P. Henderson
It would be interesting to hear from Thomas Hawk or Kristohper on what Zooomr's official stance on this is, and what they are going to do about it if in fact they are removing any metadata randomly or otherwise. - Jeff P. Henderson
I'm playing around with Gallery2, and it too removes the metadata from the smaller sizes. It does leave it in the originals though. I have a feeling this has more to do with the server-side components (like Gd or ImageMagick) that are used to resize photos. They probably generate smaller sizes without meta-data, and that's what needs to be addressed. - Raoul Pop
I think Kristopher fixed it so that metadata is carried on all sizes on Zooomr. Not sure though 100%. It's pretty common for sites not to include meta data on all sizes. When I was at the MSFT photo summit earlier this year this issue was brought up and even a guy from Getty said that they don't do it because it makes file sizes larger and thus pages load slower. - Thomas Hawk
I've posted a Zip over at Zooomr asking Kris to comment. Excellent topic. - Dave Roth
I'm not a lawyer, but I believe SmugMug's terms of use require you to give them the authority to do things like this in order to provide you the service. I've seen photos where the metadata information exceeds 100K. Can you imagine 100x100 thumbnails w/100K of data? That ain't gonna fly. I'll bet Flickr's agreement also includes giving them the authority to do this - so it's covered by the DMCA. - Don MacAskill
@Don, are you sure about that 100K size? I doubt it. We are only talking about a very small number of text data items here which should not take up more than 1k or 2k at most. - Jeff P. Henderson
Did some experimenting with Gallery2, and it turns out that if you use the NetPBM graphics package to process photos and create smaller sizes plus thumbnails, the meta-data is preserved in the smaller sizes, but not in the 100 or 150px thumbnails. It's also very important to have the jHead component installed, because that's the one that reads the meta-data and writes it back to the smaller sizes. So it seems there's a way to keep the meta-data in the photos, but it will get dumped for the thumbnails. - Raoul Pop
See here if interested: http://raoulpopphotography.com.... Incidentally, I agree with Don on the thumbnail meta-data. I've seen it take as much as 20Kb extra on top of the photo. It makes no sense to keep it in for a thumbnail that's at most 5Kb in size. - Raoul Pop

Mark, it's great to see you got a blog going! I look forward to reading a lot more of it. Thanks for the mention as well :) - Mike Fruchter
I just wonder why ff has the lock on aggregation of other nets. I guess there just isn't a market for other ones. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Just out of curiosity: Where is that "fake following" feature that the 2 links in point 7 talk about? - Remo
Remo, the fake following is not really a feature. From my understanding, fake following simply means that you subscribe to someone and then add them to a list that you never check. It's stupid & I don't see the point. - Mark Wilson
Noah, I think ff has the lock because they do it best. You could also check out SocialThing (http://socialthing.com). There is a need for an aggregator like FF for people interested in blogging & other forms of social media. For the average Joe, not so much. - Mark Wilson
I wouldn't look at Strands as a competitor at all. I think everyone tends to lean to competition to make things interesting. We're a taste streaming service. We learn about you, we recommend things to you based on how you interact with stuff and help you find more cool stuff.
