I just had a revelation that not everybody that uses social media sites crave conversations or meaningful connections. Some just want to share links with people and that's how they want to use twitter or friendfeed for example. Could it be then that most people who have introvert traits don't really want to connect with people?
Very likely. I only get into discussions about politics, economics, and religion, which are not most people's cups of tea. I may like other things, but I rarely discus them online. I don't really crave 'connections' with people online, I view them as sources of content.
- Alex Scrivener
I'm an introvert, but I do enjoy a useful conversation
- William Harryman
This is an important thing every person talking or advising about the interactive web needs to understand: different people use it differently for different reasons.
- Patricia
i like discussing music-making and everything that goes along with it. sadly, i have yet to meet anyone in FF or FB or anywhere other than message boards (UGH!) or IRC who is like-minded.
- Dead Silence
You are a bit kinder than I am. Maybe I should learn to look at things like you do. However, I see a lot of people that live in their own little world and just don't care about other people. They want themselves to be the spotlot of attention and wouldn't dare give attention to someone else.
- Hummie
Yup, you're assumption is correct. See Forrester.com/groundswell then click on "Profile Tool" to find out why
- Jeremiah Owyang
Dead Silence, rooms may help with that. I find it more difficult to have topical conversations when everyone's feed is a mass of all different interests and inputs.
- joey
I don't know that it's just introverts. I'm a strongly expressed introvert, and I love interacting with people online. It's much easier and less stressful for me than interacting offline - although gaining confidence through online interaction has improved my offline confidence as well and I'm far less shy than I used to be.
- Jandy
Jandy - same here - my thoughts exactly! I'm still working on the offline confidence... hoping that will improve as time goes on...
- Jan - @wordsforliving
i see what you mean but there are also different ways of using social media. Some use it strictly as a way positioning themselves as industry leaders, some for business and some for fun. The strategies are different.
- Violet Mae Lim
Aaah - so true Violet... I have to remember that not everyone is exactly like me or want the same things out of it!
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I think you're on to something although I'd never want to concede your last point even though that might be deductively true. For some of us it takes a while longer to open up and 'engage' per se but I'm hoping that its just part of the natural learning curve.
- Adi
Adi - I'd been puzzled over other introverts not wanting to chat even online. I don't understand this since I'd like to connect with other like-minded people, but at this point, it's definitely a mystery to me.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I like connecting, sharing, learning, and don't have a thing to sell you but my smiling mug. :-)
- Mathew A. Koeneker
I like getting involved in discussions online, but I'm not sure that I really connect.
- John
I fall under the introvert category. I do more sharing of links and content and original thoughts than conversating. I guess conversating isn't a word.
- Holden Caulfield
Have to disagree with the opening statement. Just had an interesting time with some twitter peeps about Friendfeed-aggregated news links. Because the links came into Twitter around ten-to-a-time, my followers didn't like it. Pretty much unanimous they wanted commentary and conversation.
- George Hall (Australia)
Exactly George - that's my thoughts. What happened was I came across one person (and maybe this person is rare), that actually stated that she did not want the conversations, but only wanted to use social media to share info and links. This was quite a surprise to me, as I assumed every single person on the planet would want commentary and conversation. So seeing her disclose that she...

I have gained true friends through the internet. I use it to connect, to discuss common interests and to learn.

I think I function in social media much like I do in the real world. It takes me awhile to find those I really connect with. I don't care for all the silly stuff most of the time. It's kind of like small talk which bores me after awhile. But when I can get into a good discussion with a group about something I'm really interested in, then I'm more than willing to engage. However, I find...

I'm kind of the opposite, Jannifer. I find that conversation and connection are much easier for me online than in person. I don't get worn out or overstimulated nearly as quickly or easily. And, of course, every day is different. I may be in a silly, frivolous mood today and a more serious mood tomorrow.

I'm trying to get team members to join FriendFeed as the MAIN collaboration and communication platform for us to use to run our Independent businesses, but I'm just not having luck getting the people here who would benefit tremendously by being here. Any ideas on how I can overcome this obstacle?
Not sure if you got the answer you were looking for but my business partners and I at the Secret Women's Business Network ( http://www.swbnetwork.com/blog... ) use FriendFeed as a collaboration tool as we are on three different continents. We have a private room where we do our collaboration and a public one http://friendfeed.com/swbnetw... where we share bits and pieces to the world. It really is fantastic as a communication and collaboration tool.
- Allison
I'm in the same position. I have friends on my Yahoo Groups mailing list that would benefit being on FF (if any for the email features) but they are not interested. I'd prefer it as it will kick down my emails even more, ah well.

Most days I find it Just addictive enough, but there are those days where it isn't a good thing for me to enter the Friend feed front door ....
- Brent - Mugwumps R Us
Crap. Have you ever upgraded & PAID for a whole year of premium service, then FORGOT you'd done that?? I could have been using this service all this time and had even been paying for another service that duplicates the main features!! Now I only have 2 months left before the next year's bill is due! I could seriously STRANGLE myself!!!
Never completely forgot I think but in a way I half forgot, I mean did not think about it and didn't act although I didn't completely forget, it was procrastination. You think you have plenty of time to start using the service and then time goes quickly. It's like those people that pay the gym for a year go twice and then keep saying tomorrow, tomorrow and they hardly ever go again.
- M F
Right! I know I purchased the whole year thinking I had plenty of time to utilize it, then life problems happened and it shoved it to the back of my mind. Meanwhile time was flying by, then my memory goes into FAIL mode, I seriously hate seeing money go to waste like that. I quit getting gym memberships a long time ago for those very reasons you mentioned M F.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I have questions about the video embedded in your presentation about Friendfeed - http://prezi.com/107051/view - I can't find if you have the video link elsewhere... Also wasn't sure if you minded if I ask questions...
My situation is that my website isn't getting pulled up in Google like it used to and this is hurting my business. Since I don't want people to think that I only want to "market", I don't mention my brand much here on friendfeed. Nothing I'm saying or sharing here on friendfeed is pulling up in Google, even though I have a bunch of rooms set up for brand exposure.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
So in your examples, certain content was being pulled up when you talked about it here on friendfeed. That is not happening to me and I'm confused as to why. Is it because people don't usually talk to me when I post stuff about the Uppercase Living brand or is the reason content gets pulled up on Google search from friendfeed because those threads have lots of "likes" or "comments". I'm wondering this because this seems to be the way Facebook works.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
To be honest I'm not sure, the example I used with "search literacy" had not likes or comments other than my original one
- Keith (aka Tsudohnimh)
if you have alot of other links it may be drowning out the google results
- Keith (aka Tsudohnimh)
Is that because "search literacy" doesn't get that many searches for that term? Because I know the term "Uppercase Living" is searched by a ton of people all the time. Lots of competition, plus people searching directly for it.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
Aaahhh so if I'm always posting a bunch of links to stuff all the time here on friendfeed (which I do), posting all kinds of other links delutes it too much?
- Jan - @wordsforliving
So, tons of people searching for a term or maybe it's more of the fact that so many people like me have websites listed under "Uppercase Living".... Oh, as you can see, I know very little about SEO, but I heard SEO folks are kind of shady. But I don't know...
- Jan - @wordsforliving
If I have other questions related to this topic, where is the best place to go here on friendfeed to talk about it??
- Jan - @wordsforliving
If you want info regarding search on google, seek out Adam Lasnik on FF.
- Anne Bouey
There are no Michael Jackson fans on friendfeed watching the funeral?
My kids are home sick, and they let me put it on a little bit ago, but they'd rather watch something else. I liked John Mayer's performance though.

I'm amazed at how everyone who are speaking and performing are expressing themselves from such a deep place in their hearts. You can hear the depth.

I don't think there's been anyone yet who performed that didn't break down or nearly break down during their performance at the funeral.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
ok, a more upbeat song. Maybe no more crying on stage, although Usher looked like he still may be.

Look how all these people are touching the world now!! Something, somebody made this happen!!! Michael was a vehicle for all this love and now in his passing it's really blooming!!! You know how it happens when someone dies.

I read someone's comment on FF. What is all this attention for MJ. I said I understood how he felt because I felt that way last weekend when he died but then I allowed myself to go to a deeper place to get the gift of love and sharing.

I'm analyzing apps to help me get organized and reduce paper clutter. Any thoughts on Evernote vs. Springpad and/or if a Premium acct. is needed to make it truly useful.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
from Bookmarklet
I personally do a lot of note taking and document archiving in a month. Since I have such a high amount of traffic I pay for the service.
- CW™
I'm wanting to utilize some sort of document archiving. I'm horrible with keeping track of papers, which get misplaced, etc. Preferably I'd like to scan documents directly into an online app. rather than storing them on my computer first and then uploading them, but I don't know if that's something that's even possible.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I do that with iPhone (or any digital camera) and send to Evernote via email or iPhone app.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
I don't have an iPhone - wondering if it would still benefit me as much since I don't have one.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I just upgraded to premium. The cost to do so is minimal, and with the premium account, I can now import any type of file. That's big for me in business: Word, Excel & PPT files I get from colleagues can now be input and accessed through Evernote. I love it.
- eEditor
eEditor - can you also import MP3 files (not music, but educational lectures)?
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I love Evernote but haven't yet hit the limit on uploads (so far, I mostly use it for bookmarking online and tagging things to read or do in the future). I plan to upgrade to premium anyway just because I think it's a wonderful service and I want to support it, especially as I branch out and use more of the features.
- joey
Don't have a premium account, but should. I use it a lot with my WinMo
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
I compared Evernote to Springpad. Springpad is pretty cool, but it's buggy and has enough complaints on their Get Satisfaction website to cause me to shove that one to the background at least for now. I discovered that I could use Evernote with Skitch to take screen shots, then organize them into Evernote. This keeps me from having to save too many .jpg files onto my laptop.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
I use Evernote a lot, but the free version is enough for me for now. It's kind of a chicken-and-egg thing. I don't want to invest too much of my note-taking with them, given that they are a small company and who knows how long they'll be in business. But if most people think like me and opt for the free version, then they'll probably won't survive.
- Andre P. Siregar
That's what concerns me - whether a company is going to be able to stick around. That's why I didn't want to invest too much into Springpad. All of these companies sinking makes one hesitant. If it continues to prove valuable, I would upgrade to the premium account.
- Jan - @wordsforliving
Anyone interested in live-blogging your thoughts with me during Michael Jackson's or is that a twitter-only thing?
Too much stuff also complicates life - both literally and figuratively. Not only does it take time and money to deal with my excess stuff, but having my stuff scattered about also weighs me down emotionally.

Bruce, that's great! I've been trying to get geared up to have a garage sale and it seems like it's been one thing after another and time keeps flying by... hopefully I will be able to have one by Fall at least.

Getting rid of stuff is a LOT of work, unless what you're tossing is completely meaningless to you. Otherwise, most items are fraught with memories or unfulfilled plans or whatever. Even donating items takes sorting, contacting, coordinating, etc. When pondering a purge, you have to ask yourself "if the house was to burn down, could I live just fine without these items? The answer is most often "yes."

This is very cool, I wonder how it would work for the 110# lettra paper. I've been working with a vendor to have my cards scored because they are basically impossible to score using a bone folder.

That's cool! (I geek out a little over office supplies)

Andrea, I have some really height-wright laminated post cards and was actually surprised how easily I was able to score those.

One of the main reasons why I love FriendFeed is because I can follow people around asking questions and can learn lots of new things. For instance I just learned what a Vegan is thanks to Alex Scoble. FriendFeed is heaven for curious cats like me!
Slippy - there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.
- Mellissa Doyle
And then there is the raw foodist, who is also, essentially, a vegan. lol
- Kathy Lee
Is that someone from the Vega star system?
- Mark Trapp
Mark: No, they're named after their home planets in the Vega system.
- Ha3rvey
Ha3rvey: I'm not sure about that; I heard they united under one Vegan interplanetary government after the Vegan civil war a few hundred years back.
- Mark Trapp
That wasn't a "civil war", it was coup. They became rebalkanized within 50 years. The Galactic Wikipedia will back me up on this.
- Ha3rvey
Feh, that's just what the revisionist editors at the Galactic Wikipedia would have you believe.
- Mark Trapp
And again with the cries of "revisionism". I suppose next you'll be telling me that Wolf 359 was just a "rescue mission". *sheesh*
- Ha3rvey
Look, the Borg were on holiday. If you were stuck in a transwarp conduit for over 1500 parsecs, you'd be a little irate, too. Mountains out of molehills.
