"Alongside its unveiling of the new iPhone today at the WWDC keynote in San Francisco, Apple also unveiled a secret weapon in its quest to dominate the smartphone market: A cheaper iPhone. This new iPhone will be the iPhone 3G. While the newly released iPhone 3GS will offer more storage, a faster processor, more RAM and faster download speeds, this iPhone will have the same specs as the last one. But what you get for this is one hell of a price: $99. This undercuts the price of the current iPhone models by $100 and more importantly, also undercuts the cost of the Palm Pre by that amount (and even more if you consider the Pre’s $100 mail-in rebate). $99 is a very nice sweat spot for a device that remember, will also have a access to the App Store’s over 50,000 apps."

Almost certainly. Apple gets a cut of every monthly bill. The contract is the real money maker for Apple. I doubt they make much on the phone. Especially now with the price drop.

Yes, it does require a 2 yr. plan with AT&T. From Apple.com: " Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately."

Indeed, Kenichi! There is one huge reason why this phone is better than most of the japanese cell phones -- it will have native support for kanji including "finger writing" the kanji you want on the screen. I'll try to write a post about it.

Will you be able to buy an unlocked 3G iphone?
I'm guessing not officially unless you buy from outside of the US where Apple doesn't deal with AT&T, it's a potential. But I'm sure the iPhoneDev team and others is/will be working on methods to jailbreak and SIM unlock the 3G.

It most definitely would be, but we can't assume the new iPhone will do Flash yet :-(

It would be playback only. There is no indication the new version will have video recording.

To be honest, them lowering the price was revolutionary in my book. Now everyone can feasibly get one. I'm sure more features will soon start rolling out after the next generation uptake.
