Little known fact: Devices used in Apple keynotes run on Japanese Wifi freqs specifically to lessen the chances of interference from the myriad of other devices in the auditorium.
It's called iPhone 4 so they can opt for a minor, incremental release next year (a la iPhone 3G[s]), add 4G support to it, and call it the iPhone 4[g]. I may have also just made that up.
Neat: you can stream what you see on the back of the camera using FaceTime. As an open protocol, I can see things like UStream or Qik taking advantage of that.
I am surprised you cannot preorder today. That's weird.

Apple's site still hasn't refreshes. Usually by this time they'd have a homepage promo, a product page, a commercial and a documentary video up.
- Kevin Fox
When I was a kid, I hosted a lan party at my house. We went nuts with electronics, tripping breakers a couple of times. I wanted my party to go off without a hitch, and I decided to blame the power troubles on a lava lamp someone brought. That became the running joke throughout the night: something went wrong? It's that damn lava lamp! Steve, it's not the lava lamp. It's just how it goes, sometimes.
- Mark Trapp
It was a mess during Google I/O's Google TV demo also.
- Louis Gray
They should just install RF jammers directed at the audience. Damned the illegality!
- Mark Trapp
The storage thing is especially surprising to me given the added HD video capability.
- Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
Yeah, weird. With the iPad, I use the storage on the iPhone less and less, though; was expecting (read: hoping for) a lower price point (like an 8 GB iPhone 4 for $99) to break into the feature phone market.
- Mark Trapp
Scarily enough, the memory issue might be the result of constrained global supplies of those chips, hampered by the iPad's success.
- Kevin Fox
He said there were 4 main points he wanted to make about the iPhone 4, right? The first three, while neat from a technical/industrial design perspective, are missing that "wow" factor.
"iBooks will automatically and wirelessly — and for no charge — sync your place, notes, and bookmarks across all your devices" Does that include my mac?
- Kevin Fox
I think that wireless sync points to MobileMe free for all iOS users being point 8.
- Mark Trapp
#8 is going to be Apple buying both Facebook and Twitter, and then shutting them down for the good of humanity.
- Louis Gray
1: An all new design 2. Something we call the retina display. 3: A4, including better battery life 4: Sensors, including new gyro 5: A whole new camera system 6: iPhone OS4 (iOS4) 7: iBooks 8: iAds

Glad Apple is attempting to address the problem of the price deflation and the resulting reactionary iPad price inflation. The App Store exploded because of all the low-cost apps.
Every time I see a 20 or 40 dollar one-function app or a 10 dollar throwaway casual game on the iPad App Store, I think, "wow, they must really hate their users."
- Mark Trapp
Throw Apple's pricing of their own apps into the mix too. iMovie seems like an amazing app. It's just $4.99. So any developer making an app less amazing than that will have to think very hard before pricing it above $4.99.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
So far, the iPhone 4 seems like it's caught up to the current generation of Android smart phones in terms of hardware features. Edit: surpassed in some places, even!
Really? It seems to be pretty far ahead in display and my guess is that the camera will be better. Also, which Android phones have front-facing cameras?
- Kevin Fox
Also, tap-to-focus while recording 720p/30fps video is something I've never heard of anywhere.
- Kevin Fox
The Dell whatever that was making the rounds yesterday has a front-facing camera. And I think yeah, the iPhone 4 has surpassed them, but a lot of the chatter a few weeks ago was about how the iPhone 3GS was a dinosaur compared to what HTC was releasing this quarter, even factoring into what was discovered in the iPhone leak. This keynote seems to say "lol no" to that mentality.
- Mark Trapp
Evo has a front facing camera (one of the majorly touted launch feature, even)

I have mixed feelings about gdgt continuing to live blog. On the one hand, I WANNA KNOW NOW. On the other hand, I don't want to make Steve Jobs mad, by golly.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
I'm not sure if Steve Jobs was mixing terms, but they reported he said there was like over 500 wifi hotspots in the room. If that's the case, seriously, there's no need for that many mifis.
- Mark Trapp
Couldn't steve switch to 3G?...I see, wifi only for the video calls.
- Todd Hoff
Steve performs Jedi Mind Trick on WWDC audience: "This is not the wifi access point you are looking for... Close your laptops and we'll be on our way."
Stephen Foskett noted that the phrase IOS has always referred to Cisco and not Apple. Note that Cisco previously owned the word iPhone prior to Apple as well, and that got worked out.
Because Kindle for iPad duplicates iBooks and still got approved.
- Roberto Bonini
Yeah, that bit of the presentation was disingenuous. "We reject 5% and these are the top three (completely defensible) reasons. Anything you read in the paper is therefore bunk." Um, what about reasons 4, 5, and 6? Which reasons were the Google Voice, Gmail, and that recent widget app rejected for?
- Kevin Fox
Oh, right. The Google ones weren't rejected. They're just part of the 5% that don't get approved within 7 days (or months)
- Kevin Fox
Roberto, I've speculated that if iBooks was out for a year before the Kindle came out it would be a different story, but Amazon was selling books for reading on the iPhone before Apple even started on iBooks, so they couldn't exactly revoke it.
- Kevin Fox
Seven platforms and tons of "buy one get one free" deals and the best Android could do in Apple's slowest half of the sales year was get up to 9%? I think things are looking good for my position! :)
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
So, if iPhone 4 battery lasts 40% longer than the 3GS battery and the three 3GS battery already lasts longer than the EVO battery, how are all you EVO fanbois feeling now?
