Aperture keeps the orig but writes the edits to a database, so even if you have 5 versions, it doesn't take up 5 times the space

if you make edits in iphoto, it keeps the original file, and creates a duplicate for the edits.

Aperture's editing is non-desctructive, so 4 different versions of an image doesn't take up 4 times the space.
