The 40-year-old engineer from Spijkenisse, Holland, is so enthusiastic about the smoking mountains that he has slept at the edge of an active crater, proposed to his wife on the slopes of a simmering cone, and reorganised his honeymoon to make sure he didn't miss an eruption. Mr Koster has even dodged machine gun-toting bandits in his quest to take beautiful pictures.

I went to the Big Island about 2 1/2 years ago hoping to see some lava. Two weeks before we got there, it stopped flowing. A month later, it started again. :/

"Start out by marinating the chicken in buttermilk, along with mustard and hot sauce—this keeps it juicy and moist. Plus it adds flavor. Remove and discard the chicken skin, which is high in saturated fat. Typical fried chicken has 7 grams of saturated fat per serving. Our recipe has only 2 grams. To maintain a crispy “fried chicken-like” coating, dredge the chicken in a blend of whole-wheat flour, paprika, thyme and sesame seeds. This gives it great full flavor with less fat and calories. (We dredge with whole-wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour to add fiber and nutrients.) Instead of frying, spray the coated chicken with cooking spray and bake it on a wire rack until the coating is crispy."

I'm pretty sure it's in the collection "Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head", published back in the early/mid 70s. I know I've got it around here somewhere...

I remember the days when it would take my daughter minutes to get ready to go out with her old dad. Now it takes her 15 minutes to finish a cup of coffee before she can even start to get ready.
Ohh, I make a mean from scratch banana pudding and you've just made me crave some. Share, please!

Kisha, we have never made our banana puddings from scratch, so I don't know what I'm missing on the homemade pudding part. It's hard to imagine bp being improved upon in any way, but I bet yours is heartstoppingly good.

My partner tried to create a "death by banana pudding" moment by bringing home free-range eggs, fancy vanilla extract, organic milk... even he had to concede after I'd finished cooking that banana pudding can't get better than itself. :) My stomach is still grumbling every time I look at your gorgeous pic.

Aw, thanks. :) yeah, I was thinking, what if you made your own nilla wafers, too? Maybe the whole bp thing hasn't been pushed to its limits. ;)

I LOVE fried pickles. Everyone out here seems to think they're weird. Well, except you and Anika, apparently.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I just sent my husband to the store and considered asking him to pick up more pickles so I could make more, but it's too hot to be frying stuff.

How do I know it's a good morning? I can hear the trash truck making it's rounds. The fact that I'm awake and sitting here drinking my coffee and not scrambling for the door to take the can to the curb means I didn't oversleep and got in touch with my inner adult by taking the trash out last night. It's a small victory, but I'll take it.
the trash guys usually don't make it to my place until later in the morning. it's the recycling guy that i usually have problems with. he's started coming earlier and earlier lately.

Good work! Might wanna return your Magic 8-ball, though. =)
- Jered Hofker
Jered, I'll give the 8ball a pass on this one: I still got to work late. Spent too much time in my chair with a cat and a cup of coffee. The recycling is the biggest issue: we fill the bin every week so it's got to make it to the curb. The trash can easily go 2 weeks between pickups since so much winds up in the compost or in the recycle bin. Still, though: it's hot, so it kinda stinks =P
