What I always find amazing is that the country capable of making and flying Buran was clearly incapable of mass producing, say, its own high quality and affordable tape recorder, or color TV, or automobile. The reason why I dismiss Buran as evidence of Soviet technological achievement. It's more like expensive me-too gesture. - andrei_c
@wahn I'm afraid you are wrong on both claims - in first case you use classical weasel words "was clearly incapable of" while it might be clear to you only (e.g. I had different experience); and in second case you try to make everyone to believe that 3rd party recorded flight to space by particular very complex program is not technology achievement. You get in more trouble doing something someone has told you not to do than doing something that nobody has given permission for. If you ask 10 people and one says 'nay' you open yourself up to trouble. Ask as few people as needed to CYA and then do the right thing for the company as you see it. - Kevin Fox

I dont get it either honestly, a phone with substandard features, a huge price and the single worst carrier in the nation. Huh? Only in fanboy land. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
Soulhuntre: always the critic. wrong, wrong, wrong. But that's cool. I have Nokia and Windows Mobile phones too, just so I can be cool like you. - Robert Scoble
Soulhuntre... proof? you are wrong. Have been an ATT customer for 10 years and I have no issues with their service. Price? YES, although thats the same with all careers. What features do you want? Video? what else? Its a great phone on its own. Its visually appealing, and technologically amazing. Find me a phone that has a comparable user experience, developer support, customer support like the iPhone - Akshay Dodeja
Akshay: no need to argue with Soulhuntre. You'll never convince people like him. Just leave him with his Blackberry or Nokia, or worse, and let him live in his own little world. It probably looks pretty cool to him. - Robert Scoble
I can't understand people. They are acting as if it was "iPhones available only during the second and third week of July" while actually, the opposite is true - Roland Hesz
Wow, harsh. It's interesting how that reaction goes... I criticize a product and people get all bent as if I attacked them personally. Is that part of Apples success? Do people really identify with the "cool" factor of things like the iPhone that to criticize it is to, in effect, attack them personally? "People like him"... you mean people who don't like AT&T? People who want features the iPhone doesn't have? Very odd. - Soulhuntre
Soulhuntre: no, it's just that I have a ton of different phones and your review simply does not ring true. All the other phones suck compared to the iPhone in experience and a whole raft of things. Nokia beats it on camera, though. That's why i carry three phones. I hate the Nokia, though. It sucks in almost every other way. - Robert Scoble
And I use a lot of phones. Blackberries? They are ugly compared to iPhones. They have better keyboards, though, but I don't care about keyboards. I care about Web surfing and using it to navigate around maps and other things. - Robert Scoble
@Akshay - the UI is, of course, gorgeous. But that really covers it. Features it lacks that my current phone has - MMS, an open development tool chain that does not need anyone's blessing to sell applications, stereo bluetooth, copy / paste, the ability to run applications in the background, commonality of OS across carriers, replaceable battery, good battery life at high speeds, the ability to act as a modem for my laptop, a physical slide out keyboard (useful when remote controlling servers... - Soulhuntre
But, yes, Apple's success comes from people either loving or hating their products. They don't have people who go "meh" when discussing their products. - Robert Scoble
Soulhuntre: MMS? Who cares? Tool chain? Who cares, and those who care are waiting for Android. Stereo bluetooth? Meh. Copy/Paste. OK, got me there, but I'm not deciding my phone purchase based on that. I've never even used it on the Nokias, truth be told. Apps running in background? I have those on Nokia and they drain the battery. Commonality of OS across carriers? Um, one carrier, one OS. Heheh. Replaceable battery? I don't care, Apple gave me a new iPhone last time the battery died. Good battery life... - Robert Scoble
...at high speeds? iPhone outlasts the other phones when used the same way in my tests. Ability to act as a modem for my laptop. THIS IS A MAJOR feature, but one that only appeals to geeks. A physical slide out keyboard? I don't care. - Robert Scoble
iPhone's experience is great. It's beautiful and well-designed. I simply cannot get anything done with it though. Battery life alone is a problem, and the un-keyboard lowers my ability to use it as a two-way text communications device. Not only does the Nokia let me leave my camera at home (sometimes), but I can use it to watch C-SPAN...and it doesn't eat battery life. I can sit in one hearing and watch another, just in case. Here's a test, Robert: how easily can you use iPhone with one hand? - Andrew Feinberg
The one thing that does stink though is the inability to multi task... I'm a HUGE IM person so not having my chat clients up all the time is a huge minus for me. Sure there's a native AIM app but it's all about Gtalk - Mona N.
Andrew: I use the iPhone pretty easily, but I can't use a device with a real keyboard. I got carpal tunnel last time I had a Blackberry because I was so addicted to it. So I'm a weird one with that. I can type very fast on the iPhone, though. About 1/3rd of my comments here on FriendFeed are done with the iPhone. - Robert Scoble
@Akshay - (continued) bluetooth compatibility with a good external GPS (internal chips on phones have weak antennas for many navigation tasks), the ability to sync all data on the phone (does the iPhone sync notes yet? This may be moot), removable memory and video recording. I use many of those featured daily (tethering, background applications, MMS, video recording, custom / open applications, remote desktop and keyboard). I am not blindly hating on the iPhone, I am just aware of its flaws. - Soulhuntre
I remember you mentioned that. It does have an addictive quality that other smartphones don't. Not sure why. I am not totally closed-minded on iPhone, but I do need to see how well it implements push, and if Apple fixes battery life. I was quite the hater on video, remember? I also am starting to have a bit of a FriendFeed problem...and fftogo doesn't cut it... - Andrew Feinberg
Upon re-reading, I think I see your point Robert. The issue was probably not the criticism of the iPhone itself but the fanboy comment - which does come across more personally targeted. It was meant in good fun, but the web does steal tone and body language. Anyway, my bad and my apologies. - Soulhuntre
I am glad that the iPhone works for you Robert, and to everyone who uses it and loves it more power too them. But there are reasons why it hasn't taken over the world in a year - and the 3G doesn't change that. There are very real, very useful features that many of us use every single day it is missing. It is good, but the hype is out of all proportion. - Soulhuntre
Soulhuntre: keep in mind that the iPhone doesn't work for me 100% of the time. It's why I carry three phones with me everywhere I go. - Robert Scoble
You guys better like iPhone or Robert Scoble will unfriend you! LOL - Igor The Troll
I see lots of people complaining about the iPhone's missing features. But Apple is not trying to get the "bullet point" people. They pick one or two game-changing features to put in their products, then focus on the user experience. And more companies need to do that (Sony, I'm looking at you). To put it another way, it's not the size of your bullet point list that matters, it's how you use it. - invariant
I'm not sure what the "game changing" feature of the iPhone is? the UI? It's good - but not (to me) game changing. There actually aren't any other features unique tot he iPhone. I understand your point... but when you need them these features are not just bullet points. - Soulhuntre
Features unique to the iPhone? A usable web browser. - Robert Scoble
My #1, biggest complaint of the Palm OS Treo..and also the reason why I'm looking at the new Treo800, which runs WinMobile 6.1 - Bradley McSpinn
Good point. Having a full Safari on the iPhone is nice to be sure and for that reason I hope "Deepfish" will be released soon. In the meantime I get by with Oprah and Skyfire. Of course a good browser on a bad network isn't much help :) - Soulhuntre
Soulhuntre: You are right, the iPhone has its flaws. Although the places it excels at most phones dont come close to that. I borrow my friends Nokia n95 from time to time and its feature set is far superior to that of iphone. Although its a horrible device when it comes to using those features with ease and with enjoyment. The location service is not intuitive on the n95. Wifi connectivity is a chore. Browser is rubbish. Stability of applications and OS is another concern. and the settings menu is a maze.. - Akshay Dodeja
Its those overlooked features on most phones is where I think the iPhone wins. It simply makes it pleasure to use compared to most high end phones. MMS would be nice but I think most people can live without it. I think Apple will eventually bring the iPhone to the level of most phones within a year or two and make those features a breeze to use. Especially video. I really dont see why you would most people would need add-on memory or replaceable battery. - Akshay Dodeja
I know a number of biz folks and power users who keep spare batteries with them for their phones. The iPhoen only lasts 3-4 hours of heavy 3G use... that simply isn't enough for folks who can use it tethered. Your faith is a good thing...but Apple didn't fix these obvious flaws in the first year - why would they do it now? They had a full year head start, and didn't crush the market - they just defined it.Phones like the HTC Touch Pro are the response. - Soulhuntre
I would love to know more about the HTC touch pro, although if it is anything like the HTC Touch. Its not going to fair much better. - Akshay Dodeja
You can see lots of video from HTC about it on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/user/HT... . The Interface is good, the hardware is great and it has few fo the drawbacks (for me) of the iPhone. Including a great developer toolchain. It's probalby my next big phone upgrade. - Soulhuntre
@Soulhuntre: The UI _is_ game changing, because it is in a different league than any other device out there. The touch screen, the web browser, the music player, and (often overlooked) the accelerometer support are all features that nobody was doing well if at all. None of this stuff was new, it was just finally done right. And it turned out that done right, those features changed the game. Exhibit A: All of the iPhone clones coming out from every major manufacturer. - invariant
Again, it's good that you like them (as do many others) and it is certainly influential - but it isn't game changing in the phone market. It is much more influential int he Smartphone market, but touch interfaces were there before it and the need to make them pretty was known before it as well. Again, influential but not "game changing" in my opinion. Obviously, opinions differ. - Soulhuntre
I think game changing vs influential is semantics. The iPhone is influential in the overall market because many of the clones coming out are NOT smart phones (Samsung Instinct for example). Unfortunately that's gonna have to be it for me tonight. Sorry for hijacking your thread Kevin! - invariant via twhirl
having owned a windows mobile phone and a symbian phone and now the iPhone IMHO the iPhone is the first device that actually feels like having a small laptop with me all the time. And having a web browser that feels like a desktop browser is game changing - h1ro
