I'm a big fan of the song "Finland." Alaska is similarly in the north. If McCain starts pining for the fjords, expect Terry Gilliam to animate Beltway dinner parties. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
They needed to appeal to distraught Hillary voters. - orionstarr
Finland Finland Finland place where I want to be! - Tad - just Tad
He has a wife, you know. Do you know what she's called? She's called... Incontinentia. Incontinentia Buttocks. - Grant Fitzgerald
(I could do this all day - probably will) - Tad - just Tad
Half a VP, philosophically, must ipso-facto half not be. But half the VP has got to be vis a vis its entity. Do you see? But can a VP be said to be or not to be an entire VP when half the VP is is not a VP due to some ancient injury? - Akiva Moskovitz
I'm just surprised because none of the stuff I read yesterday about the possibilities even listed her as a "maybe". - Rochelle
Grant, speaking of strange names, Sarah Palin's kids are named Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, and Trig. - Rochelle
She is pro-life and pro-gun. Holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association. Opposes same-sex marriage yea that sounds like a winner. - orionstarr
She's always been a incredibly possible maybe in everything I've heard. And I'm glad he chose her. Good move. - JMS
@Rochelle, that's quite a bizarre collection! How unfortunate it would be if Trig turned out to be really bad at calculus... - Grant Fitzgerald
I bet she will increase funding to the Ministry... you know which one :P - John Worthington
@Sally That's a good point -- a lot of Repubs are scratching their head still wondering how McCain got the nomination - Shey
Nice Michael Palin reference. Akiva might win post of the day ;) - Lindsey Smith
Grant, Trig actually has Down Syndrome, so yeah, he will be really bad at calculus. :P - Rochelle
+1 Akiva, but it was more than just her uterus. Wicked conservative + woman. He was stuck between Palin and Ann Coulter, apparently, and he KNEW Coulter couldnt' keep her trap shut for two seconds. - Cyndy
Yeah, but a vagina was the litmus test, then it was down to the nit-picky stuff like not being insane... or not AS insane... - Jason Carreira
Objective-C, FTW! (I also reached the limits of the account name length. I wanted to do [james setNick:@"willia4"], but it was too long. - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
No, no. No lambdas in objective-c. Though they're looking at adding closures... - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
@willia4 - So, what is that abomination? A class variable set? - Yuvi
It's setting the "nick" property of the instance of whatever class I happen to be in ("self" == VB's "Me" == C#'s "this"). I could also do [self setValue:@"willia4" forKey:@"nick"] and the runtime would figure out where my variable was and I wouldn't have to write the method myself. Cocoa is amazing like that. - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
Yuvi: it's equivalent to this->setNick("willia4") in other, unclean, languages. Just a method invocation. - Mark Trapp
SLRY - this convo needed to be posted in code junkie room=> http://friendfeed.com/rooms/co.... Secondly ThisConvo(Y:PERSON, T:PERSON2): STRING do Result := ThisConvo.NotStupid.YuviTad.name end - Peter Dawson
*speechless*. Is that supposed to be beautiful/amazing? I mean, I consider this->setNick("willia4") to be am abomination. Properties ftw. - Yuvi
Yuvi I could've done self.nick = @"willia4" ... but then it doesn't really look like ObjC anymore. ;) And looking like ObjC is the whole point! - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
@Peter Dawson - Now, Is that PASCAL? Don't tell me you have a Pascal fetish.. - Yuvi
@willia4 - Sounds better :) What's that @ doing, btw? (Note - I don't exactly favor the C style programming languages :D ) - Yuvi
I'm so tempted to start talking in 6502 machine code, that'll teach you whippersnappers ;-) - Slippy Lane
@Slippy - You're going to set a class variable and pass 'round a lambda in 6502 machine code? :P - Yuvi
@Yuvi since ObjC is a proper subset of C, they couldn't use quotes for strings (since quotes in C mean "array of characters"). So ObjC uses the @ to set apart string literals which will get turned into an NSString* object by the compiler. - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
The problem with being a kid spoilt by years of VS use is that you get totally pissed when you see inconsistently named object names, despite the fact that Win32 naming is a clusterf. - Yuvi
Yuvi, if one can hand-code a multiple document interface in 6502M/C then one can do anything. Now then, what's a lambda, sonny? :-D - Slippy Lane
I'm with Slippy... 10001101101111101011011001001011000000110100100101010000101101 10010101010101101001001010101101101111010101010110100111011111 01010011000101001010101010010101011111111110100111110001010000 - Kim

Great speech but I wish he didn't do it in a football stadium. Only helps to perpetuate the notion among the swing voters that he is somehow "different" and is just a rockstar personality. - David
He's such a great speaker, and has great stories to tell. The crowd was cheering more than it ever would for the Broncos. - Jeremy Campbell via twhirl
David, it didn't seem to hurt Kennedy at the convention in 1960 when he gave his "New Frontier" speech. :-) - Karim
I really don't get the big deal over the venue. Guess what, a Presidential candidate is *bigger* than a rock star. Um, hello, leader of the free world? And how many *millions* watch on TV? So, what's the big to-do over having more people see him speak in person? Sounds like a backhand elitist comment. - AJ Kohn
I rather have americans engaged in a presidential campaign b/c his decisions impact the future of our country not the Jonas Brothers. ashame to see Americans criticized for caring - Ruth Ferguson
Everyone is missing the point of why he wanted to do it in a venue like that. He didn't want to limit it to the delegates and a few lucky supporters. He wanted to open it up to as many people as possible because WE'RE the ones who've made his campaign possible. It wasn't to be a rockstar. Whether he did it face to face with 85 thousand or 2 million via a television screen, IT DOESN'T MATTER. - ::Kristen::
"Iron Chef" not to be taken literally. Quote from the article: "She is currently in the hospital and on morphine to dull the stomach pains while she waits for the nail to pass through her system." So I'm guessing Amy Winehouse shows up at the hospital next having "accidentally" swallowed a couple of bolts, a wingnut, two shillings and sixpence. - Karim
There's also ODC, which is OCD with dyslexia; DOC, which combines OCD with hypochondria; and COD, which is like OCD but you have to pay to have it. - Karim
“My son checked the "other" box today at school for race and was told that was unacceptable, he had to choose one. Should we be forced to choose a race when we don't belong to just one?”
If it's unacceptable, why is it even on the form? The fact that it's there and available as an option means it's acceptable... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Not according to his teacher, she told him he needed to pick one and that people are grouped according to the race of their mother. I had never heard that one before. - Patricia(Trish not Patty)
I'd take it to the principle and then school board, if I were you. The box is there ergo it's meant to be used. And grouped by their mother? Why are they grouping children by race anyways? - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Absolutely unacceptable- especially as more and more people belong to more than one. I think that option "other" will disappear soon. Really it would be nice if the whole question was dropped. Why does it matter? - Abby Martin
@Tina That's what I wanted to know. What form was he filling out that asked that question anyway? - Patricia(Trish not Patty)
we're grouping people by race at school? 1) i hope that's not the case and the teacher is just an idiot 2) SERIOUS WTF? - Morgan
This is an interesting issue. We could probably settle a lot of social problems by refusing to identify our racial group when the government asks us. - Chris Baskind
tangent - isn't it weird that we only have Male or Female when we're asked our sex. how does that make hermaphrodites feel? is sex really binary or did we just decide to construct it that way? it's not so neat and clean in nature. what's with our society and neat little check boxes? (i'm being dead serious) - Morgan
What state is that? I think that seriously violates racial protection laws we have in the US. They can group kids based on social economic status (SES) but not by race. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
They would have to re-do the database to support multiple fields, no? That's what the 'other' box is for, which I used to check all the time LOL - Mona N.
it is the stupid 'Affirmative Action' Jesse Jackson DNC 'Left' that wants it. Republicans want it gone. As a partial Sephardic Jew it always confused me. Am I Latino/Hispanic? - Noah David Simon
Oh hell no. If that happened to my son, you could bet that I would be at that school talking to his teacher the next day, and it wouldn't be pretty. - Andru Edwards
You should see what the Chinese are getting away with in South Africa with their Affirmative Action against 'WHITES'. - Noah David Simon
my kids are biracial and i left it blank even though they said it was mandatory and i can only choose one. what a load. - faboo mama
Trish is in Texas. Mona, I love your solution. ;-) - Chris Baskind
Ya, I don't think "wookie" is a 'proper' field :\ - Mona N.
I often check "other," and then when prompted for more detail, I give "European-American." Usually does the trick... - Mark VandenBerg via twhirl
so tell me... what am I? My ancestry is very much from Spain and Brazil... but moved to New York in the 1500s. Am I a Latino, or can I add Jew as a race? - Noah David Simon
Is there a checkmark for Gypsy? or is that offensive to the Obama people as well? Post Racial President? Yeah right. - Noah David Simon
That is really dumb. Everybody needs to get with the program on this stuff. If you get really technical about it, many Americans are multi-racial (I bet half the people you know, black or white or Hispanic especially, are partly Native American. I am, too, and part white as well, but mostly black and with two mostly black parents, so I'm black.) If you have one parent of each "race", though, "other" should be an acceptable choice. That "mother's race" crap is some of the purest BS I've ever read. - Kamilah Gill
Morgan, I think you do raise a legitimate point. I've wondered that, too. I wonder how common hermaphrodites are. - Kamilah Gill
I wonder if the teacher is from Louisiana. - Harvey Simmons
I think leaving it blank is ideal- it's none of their business anyway. - Abby Martin
WTF... there is no "race" -- it's a made up concept - when will this insanity end? - Brian Sullivan
kamilah - i think it's just interesting how we as a western culture decide that things need to be nice and neat. black and white. check box for this and that. when in reality nature is a spectrum with sometimes very messy boundaries. i get that we need to order, but why do we marginalize people who don't fit cleanly in to the box. if you're a hermaphrodite and you look at those boxes 1) what do you check and 2) more importantly how terrible do you feel even though it's a normal biological occurrence? - Morgan
...and the same goes for race, class and other constructs we apply to people without an understanding of wtf we are doing (or more horrifying that we do know what we're doing). - Morgan
genetically race is not something fixed, but race does exist in people's minds. it's made up, but we can't ignore the effects that believing in it has on everybody. not to start an argument about something else, but race is a bit like a majority religion. you can choose not to believe in it, but since so many people around you insist on believing in it it still has an impact on you. - Kamilah Gill
I check "other" all the time. Depends on how I'm feeling at the moment. - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
kamilah - i agree with you 100%. i don't think its a question of not believing it - of course the idea of race is very real - it's just understanding that it's not an absolute truth rather a social construct created by humans with all of its very real ramifications - Morgan
Very sad, but not shocking. Great that he brought it to your attention. Are you planning to question the school? - Kim Mahan
In my genealogy files, I have plenty of gov't forms - going back a century or so - on which people wrote 'American' when asked for their race. - Pat Rice
If the "other" box is unacceptable the don't provide it as an option... poor kid! refuse to participate and if they balk, then threaten to sue for discrimination... jerks. - Susan Beebe
My wife and I went through that with our first child. There was no option for biracial, other, or anything but the usual fare. We threatened to sue and call the US Dept of Ed Civ Rights office and left it blank. When my other child went to school three years later, you could check multiple boxes or other (I don't remember exactly, but you didn't have to check just one). - steplow is Steve
Even if there was a "biracial" option on a box, there are tons of combinations of biracial. The odd thing about this whole issue is that my son is completely comfortable with being biracial and has no problems at all talking about his heritage. It's other people that end up being the problem. - Patricia(Trish not Patty)
um, why on earth was that unacceptable? how maddening! - edythe
I normally don't post stuff like this, but I thought it might undo some of the after-effects of the dreaded bacon bra. - Harvey Simmons via Bookmarklet

"GLENDORA, Calif. -- California Fish & Game officials sent out an alert this week, warning hikers and cyclists in Glendora about a mountain lion that tried to attack a man riding a bike earlier this week.
The cyclist was near mile marker 9.3, according to the department's alert, when the mountain lion charged down an embankment. The animal missed the cyclist, who sped away unharmed." - edythe via Bookmarklet
damn you all got mountain lions and stuff out there? stay safe edythe. lol - Cee Bee
luckily i don't venture into the great outdoors of suburban Glendora too often. But of course there are those West-Nile-Virus-carrying mosquitoes out there now, too... - edythe
Very profane and funny D.L. Hughley skit from 2005: "I'm tired of white folks gettin' killed by mountain lions in California... gettin' dragged by a mountain lion off a f--kin' bike, how did that happen?.... You know why you will never see black people gettin' killed by a mountain lion? 'Cause if we see a thing that says "MOUNTAIN LION," we ain't goin' ridin' the f--kin' bike, that's the g-ddamned deal. Matter of fact, if we riding the bike at the *gym*, and the mountain lion come on the TV, we get off the g-ddamned bike. YOU ALL just don't believe shit can happen. [switches to 'white man' voice] 'Oh, I know it says, 'MOUNTAIN LIONS,' but I don't see any around here, and I've got to get my exercise.... I'm on a bike, what could it do?'" - Karim
