Yes, apparently this is possible. Also, for iPhone Users outside the US, I notice that only one Google Voice app is available, as of, today in the App Store (this refers to the Ireland store but I presumes applies elsewhere in the EU and perhaps further afield too): VoiceCentral. Because none of the other (Google Voice) apps are available in the App Store I have a faint suspicion that VoiceCentral might just have been placed in a non US app store by mistake. So if you're non resident in the US, feel like using a proxy to set up your GV account, are an iPhone user and don't mind a couple of Euro punt on this app then, if I were you, I'd pile into the AppStore and get me a copy of VoiceCentral before its pulled by Apple. Enjoy and remember, if it doesn't work, don't blame me. For the record I've downloaded myself a copy but haven't yet attempted to try to set up a GoogleVoice account, I haven't even got an invite yet (There's a hint in there: if anyone can advise me, or help, on how to get a GV invitation I'd be very thankful for your help) - JSLeFanu from Bookmarklet
I set up a Google Voice account from Germany this weekend. I had to screen-share with a US colleague to get the initial registration done, afterward I used localphone.com to redirect calls. Voice Central works flawlessly. - Lars Trieloff
Lars, thanks a million for the heads up on that. At least now I know another part of the picture for getting this done. I'm pretty jazzed at the thought of getting this set up. I'll report back on how I get on. Now to get one of those invites. - JSLeFanu
How can Robert Nelson's public-knowledge reminder to rely on unnamed US-proxies to set it up, along with his fine print[*], be considered anywhere near useful? Lars Trieloff sez that "Voice Central works flawlessly," but what's the value of potentially-critical service which one can never know how long it may last? [^*] "fine print: if you choose to go this route only to have Google... more... - ianf ⌘
I did setup my Google Voice account using Hotspot Shield and forward all call to my sipgate.com number and I have a truphone.com US number that I linked. and I use my BlackBerry to control Google Voice and send/receive SMS - zsafwan 
This is purely academic enquiry in my part, but how many discrete steps were required (each moment of entering a site, navigating to a specific page, filling/ entering username/ password in a form, submitting/ registering, etc, counts as one step) for you to complete the GV registration, including any previous regs you now merely invoked in order to set it up? 100? 200 discrete steps? I wonder… - ianf ⌘
ianf, I'm not very far down the road with this so I can't offer any real response to the issues you raise. I made the original post because I happened upon this article the same morning I spotted this GoogleVoice app in the Ireland App Store. Normally Apple don't stock apps for services not supported in the market of any given app store. SO for those of a "hacky" mindset I thought I'd just put the word out and attach the necessary caveats. I'm as interested as you are in the responses to your post. - JSLeFanu
David, I'm not questioning any decisions any of you above may have made, I am merely trying to clarify certain usually-unmentioned things as much for others' sake, as for my own. I have not attempted this unofficial GV setup, and probably won't, because I have other, analogous experiences of past "bypass-ordinary-channel" services similar to that which seldom worked in the long run.... more... - ianf ⌘
Well I hope everyone jumped on those GoogleVoice app while the going was good: http://www.macnn.com/article... - JSLeFanu
you can get a free SIP phone number from here sipgate.com - zsafwan 
Well I got my GoogleVoice invite today. Hooray! Hooray again that I grabbed that VoiceCentral app before it was pulled. Boo, I'm still not sure if I can get this to work in a practical way. I'm with a VOIP provider in Ireland and my package includes limitless free to the states, among numerous other places, but I haven't yet worked out the way, if any, I can get to use the GoogleVoice... more... - JSLeFanu
Ok, I give in. I'm now with ianf ⌘ on this whole gig. I can't tell anyone if GoogleVoice hacking is worth the trouble or not because I've got nowhere near getting registered. I tried the SipGate route. I made several attempts to fill out their online form but at the bottom of the page the CAPTCHA text wouldn't render. Of course I was using a Proxy, several different ones to register so... more... - JSLeFanu
But an invite is required... so...? Proxy is easy, just ssh into your US webhost. - Paul Grav
Paul, thanks, I have the invite already and I got it using a proxy, that bit was easy. I only have the haziest notion of what ssh means so I'll postpone attempting that until my understanding catches up a bit. I suppose its possible that in practice the process "can" be as easy as Gadgetell portray, its just that in my experience it isn't. Maybe it would be a breeze if I knew more about this "ssh-ing" but I don't and Gadgetell didn't suggest any competence in ssh-ing" was needed. - JSLeFanu
Well, if you have a webhost in the US, just open a terminal and type: ssh -D 1080 mywebhost.com Then fire up Firefox and change the socks host to 127.0.0.1 and 1080 for the port. Lifehacker has a more complete guide: http://lifehacker.com/237227... - Paul Grav from IM
What about the fact that international numbers are not accepted? I'm in Canada, and yeah, I had no problem signing up, proxy-style. However, it won't allow me to route my calls to my area code. I foolishly accepted a number in an outside area code (American) close to my locale, and now I'm stuck giving it a routing number that it won't accept. I think I should have waited and done it... more... - timedalkat
Paul, thanks for the tip, I really appreciate the info. I actually don't, yet, know how to do any of that. I'm posting from the phone at the moment but I'll be sure to check out the lifehacker link you provided when I'm back at the Mac. I might leave it a day or two to give myself a break because I got a bit pissed off with the whole process today and perhaps need a bit of a breather.... more... - JSLeFanu from BuddyFeed
timedalcat, you raise a good point and one that's already crossed my mind. Sorry to say I can't, yet, help you on this one. I'm not even close to being that far through the process yet myself and consider such concerns an extravagant luxury at this stage . My own local Irish number is with an Irish Sip service but I haven't even worked out how to configure GV (assuming I even make it... more... - JSLeFanu from BuddyFeed
The article is crap, it basically tells you to setup a proxy but that alone isn't sufficient to setup a Google Voice account. During the setup you select a Google Voice number but you need to forward calls to your own phone, which will inevitably have an international number and only US numbers are supported. - Paul Grav
I would think the simple way to get around any US IP address requirements would be to have someone in the US setup a TOR hidden service that points to the GV registration. It wouldn't have the same kinds of limitations as typical proxies. (I'm not the Robert Nelson of the article btw) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'd be interested to know whether anyone has tried this particular method. I'm poised to give it a go, the main thing holding me back is that I haven't got my head around the possible routing costs. I know I need a US number, I suppose I could link one to my Skype account. That cost is easy to calculate. I also have an Irish geographical VOIP SIP number already and one Mobile (or cell)... more... - JSLeFanu
BTW, for anyone interested I eventually managed to set this up. Whether it's worth it or not is a different matter entirely. - JSLeFanu

I've been using Evernote since it came out (and I still miss the ticker-tape style of the old Evernote). Over the years, my notebooks have become a ridiculous, unwieldy mess. The only way I can get anything out of them is by searching which sometimes makes me think that I should just dump everything into one notebook and call it a day...
But I don't want to do that. I'm digging around the web looking for some ideas and I can find tons of posts on how people are USING Evernote but not many on how they're ORGANIZING it. How are you guys doing it? - Akiva
There are also some things I wished that Evernote allowed: archiving and hiding of notebooks that I no longer need and notebook-specific tags come to mind immediately. - Akiva
I've tried putting together a naming and tagging convention for new notes, but the problem is that my typical Evernote workflow is to quickly paste (or email) something into the app and do the organizing later. Now, I've got 2300+ notes and the idea of going through and organizing all of them kinda makes my back hurt. - Brett Kelly
I honestly haven't been using Evernote very much simply because I have no workflow for it. I have a triage folder but no real idea of how to triage what's in there. When do I use tags as opposed to notebooks, for example. At this point, I'm thinking about making folders incredibly generic: Web Sites, Gaming, etc. And then dumping notes in there and 'organizing' them with tags. So, I'd... more... - Akiva
I only use notebooks if there's a really good reason to like 1) a very large number of notes related to the same topic that would be easier to search if they were all in the same notebook or 2) a subset of notes that I want to share publicly. In general I use tags for everything and then use Saved Searches to pull together batches of notes based on tags. Here's an overview of how I do... more... - Lindsay
Thanks, Lindsay. That definitely gives me some good ideas. Why do you go with a minimal number of notebooks? - Akiva
Because they seem kind of arbitrary and redundant with tags, and they limit me because I can only put a note in one notebook but can put any number of tags on it. I can make saved searches like dynamic notebooks and have notes shared in them depending on the tags. So my reason 1 above I could really do without... reason 2 is the only good reason for using notebooks at all IMO. - Lindsay
I started creating separate notebooks by topic in an effort to improve the speed of search and retrieval on the iPhone (which used to *suck*), but that's gotten much better. If Evernote gave me the ability to tag things that I email to it somewhere in the subject or message body, it'd be 200% more useful to me (and it's already extremely useful). I've never been able to fully understand why nested tags are useful, though. - Brett Kelly
Totally agree with you there, Brett... really wish they'd let you put tags in the emails. It would make it so much easier to import/forward stuff. - Lindsay
Brett, hah, I was just about to ask about nested tags. I like them because they add organization to the tags but I'd like to be able to do a search on a tag and have it automatically include all of its child tags. - Akiva
I actually wrote up the tag-within-email thing as part of my list of things that Evernote needs to fix/improve: http://journal.brettkelly.org/things-... - any of that resonate with you folks? - Brett Kelly
The nested tags don't let you pull all the child notes, it's mainly just so you can visually organize the tags themselves. I basically use it so my tag list isn't about 3 screens scrolling tall. It just helps me to hunt down the tag I'm looking for faster. - Lindsay
Lindsay, would you be comfortable showing a screenshot of your tag hierarchy? I'd love a pro example of how that's put together - Brett Kelly from IM
Here are some from my personal account (I have a separate work account). I didn't expand everything, but expanded some of the more "bulky" or abstract hierarchies: http://www.evernote.com/pub... BTW, your suggestion of the "smart notebooks" is basically how I use saved searches. It... more... - Lindsay
Man, that's great - your setup really embodies the kind of flexibility I've been trying to formulate in my head for the last couple of months. Another question, Lindsay, do you have a ton of saved searches? How are those organized? - Brett Kelly
This has been very helpful. I went from having a bunch of notebooks with only one or two notes in them and a bunch of tags that were linked only to one or two notes to something much more manageable. - Akiva
I have a lot more on my work account than my personal account. On my personal account I mainly have one for shopping lists (for easy recall on the phone) and a dashboard. I have significantly more saved searches for my work account, split into project dashboards... more... - Lindsay
how many notes do you guys have altogether? - Brett Kelly from IM
Between work and personal ~5500 at this point. - Lindsay
I think I'd be much more inclined to use Evernote for GTD if there weren't so much friction with editing notes on the iPhone (where I do most of my capture). Also, the inability to add checkboxes kinda hampers the experience as well. - Brett Kelly from IM
I have also "cheated" and written me some status and project planning reporting web apps against Evernote's API. It makes my work project GTD stuff even that much more useful to me. One day I want to write more stuff to slice and dice Evernote data into different formats that will be useful to other people. It's basically just a big non-relational database. I want to use it as a data store and have different front ends for it... Then all my stuff will be in one place. - Lindsay
One thing that I love the most is being able to use it to store and organize all the fonts I collect. It is SO NICE to browse them (screen shots) and have all the files and licenses in one place. - Lindsay
I actually have an Android phone so I'm still jealous of what you guys can do with the iPhone. They have not been good about supporting Android (just released something not too long ago). But it's better than what I used to do, which is mainly use the email on my phone to capture (with it's associated no-tagging issues). I'm happy to have it easier now with a real app, but it's still somewhat crippled compared to iPhone's. - Lindsay
For the record, I started this morning with about 350 notes but I've been culling and merging as I'm organizing so I'm down to 248. Remember, I haven't been using Evernote as much as I should because mine was so disorganized. Now I have a crap load of hierarchical tags and only six notebooks. I have 125 notes left to triage from my new Inbox notebook. - Akiva
Oh, one other tip for the emails and other automatic imports. If it's something I'm expecting (for instance, I have my daily FriendFeed activity imported so I have a record of conversations and good info even if people delete their accounts), I create a saved search to group all the notes that haven't been tagged and then tag them... that way it's kind of a quick batch activity. - Lindsay
The really annoying part about this is now I have to wait about 11 hours before I can actually do any maintenance work on my Evernote data :) - Brett Kelly from IM
Now I wish there was some way to link notes in Evernote with tasks in OmniFocus. - Akiva
Reading this awesome thread, I am reminded how evernote bush league I am. And I haven't even been showing up to practices! - Micah
How do you find the PDF version of manuals, Glen? I have a hard time finding them... wondering if you have a good resource to look them up... - Lindsay
If the manual isn't too large, I'll usually scan it with my scansnap, save it to EN and poopcan the original. - Brett Kelly
I hate scanning paper, much less books. I would love to just find the PDFs somewhere instead. Thinking about using that Pixily service to send them all my stuff to scan instead. But they wouldn't do books, I'm sure. - Lindsay
Wow this conversation's moving fast! I posted something at the end of last year highlighting what the pros and cons of tags vs notebooks in Evernote. http://ow.ly/TQHC I also store manuals and the like. I have predominantly PDFs scoured from manufacturer web sites, with a few scans output to PDF and even a few photos of those instructions on the back of packaging that inevitably end up in the bin. - Stephen Millard from BuddyFeed
I have a lot of programming, academic, and gaming manuals in PDF. You guys store ALL of that in Evernote? What's the benefit of it rather than just having them in a Dropbox folder? - Akiva
PDFs are indexed and searchable in evernote, for one - Brett Kelly from IM
They're in one place with all your other stuff, for two. - Lindsay
Interesting. Not sure I'll do this because I do a lot of reading from my iPhone and I can guarantee you that GoodReader's a better PDF reader than whatever Evernote has built in. - Akiva
You can add additional information like keywords or other meta data to the note containing the PDF for a third... (I'm also a big DropBox fan/user) - Stephen Millard from BuddyFeed
Speaking of, I hope a future version of OS X has metadata options beyond a label and 'Spotlight Comments'. - Akiva
Interesting. I didn't know you can set child tags. I like how Lindsay ended up organizing her notes. - Rodfather
Sorry if it was mentioned above and I missed it while scanning, but you can now tag or send to a particular notebook via email. This is HUGE (at least for me)! http://blog.evernote.com/2010... I'm approaching 4K notes, and have just a few notebooks. Like someone else noted, I created a few for big topic areas... but the majority goes into one... more... - Herb Hernandez
I've been using Evernote since the early days too. I didn't make the leap to web, or the change to versions without the ticker tape. All I ever wanted was a replacement for paper and pen, and that is what I still have on my desktop and laptop. One click and I am writing. Every so often I manually synchronise between desktop and laptop. It's no great trouble. I am glad I never upgraded from version 2.1. It only went downhill from there for other users I reckon. - Daithí
I now use Dropbox to synchronise. Laptop and PC or web, but I still have the old Evernote. Paper and Pen are far better for somethings, and having an electronic paper and pen that I can access from anywhere is great. Its just a pity Evernote dumped the Paper and Pen /Scrolling notebook concept in their later versions. Any one any idea if Evernote 2.2 will work on windows 7, or if the iPad will ever be compatible with Windows programs? - Daithí

Springpad Takes on Evernote with Semantic Technology, Barcode Scanner
Springpad Takes on Evernote with Semantic Technology, Barcode Scanner
"Springpad, a rival to Evernote's popular cross-platform note-taking service, has just bumped the competition up a notch with a new release that integrates semantic technology to automatically enhance the notes you save with relevant info. What this means is that if you save a movie, Springpad is smart enough to know it's a movie and it will offer you showtimes. If you save a product, Springpad displays price comparisons and links to shopping sites. Save a recipe and you get menu suggestions. And the list goes on. In other words, Springpad doesn't want to just be a note-taking app, it wants to be a fully realized digital assistant." - Amani from Bookmarklet
Interesting, but just from the demo I might feel boxed in with it trying to organize everything for me. I wish that Evernote would just offer templates (or set up the clients so that people can build their own) and that would make a big difference in their adoption rate, I think. - Lindsay

If you were going to use a service for a group collaboration project that could go on for months, which service would you use. 1) Friendfreed private groups 2) Google Wave 3) Google Groups 4) Evernote 5) Other insert name here. Goal is to share things, spark conversation & also use as a curation model and search effectively over past shared items.
One of the wiki type services might work, like http://www.wetpaint.com/. Ning is a possibility. - Todd Hoff

Wave - Vezquex
Cubicl.com is a new group collaboration service. Also try teambox - TrafficBug
You can also try Basecamp - TrafficBug
Honestly? I would buy a cheap domain, set up a free Google Apps for Domains account for the project, give everyone on the team an account. Instant email, docs (which will store any type of file now), calendar, chat, and a bunch of other collaboration tools. They finally added Buzz and I think you might be able to use Wave too. I've used Google Apps on a couple of projects now and it works pretty well. If you have code to store, Beanstalk (http://beanstalkapp.com/) works pretty well. - Lindsay
Definitely Wave because, even if it doesn't cover all the bases, it still gives you the ability to link to other stuff, embed some media, and act as a realtime central rallying point. - Rah-PM 2012
a posterous group blog .. depending on the amount of conversation you could curate there (via email, bookmarklet) and feed it to a friendfeed group for discussion. - Chris Myles
I am going to have to check out some of these new services. I am still partial to combining Wave and Google Apps b/c the team I am working with is very familiar with Google Apps and I don't want to confuse them. Also heard some stuff about Manymoon which ties into Google Apps as well I think. - Amani

I tried it just now and am really digging it so far. There was no "like" action, but I made a trivial comment on some photos I thought were interesting, and the bundle of photos appeared neatly in my profile's activity stream. Still, a lot of work to be done. They really ought to have RSS or Atom, though. And the mystery-meat navigation sucks hard. What's a "transparent UI"? - Gabe
Transparent interface. An ideology where the UI is unnoticeable and non-distracting to the user. I am applying the philosophy of typography in this context. The idea that typography should be transparent and unnoticeable is best described in Beatrice Warde's essay The Crystal Goblet (written in 1955) http://gmunch.home.pipeline.com/typo-L... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

"There are lots of video players out there, but one that we think gets overlooked is SMPlayer. It can do anything other video players can do and even more – like remembering where you left off in case you get interrupted during a movie. Yes, SMPlayer remembers where you were when you closed a video and starts up at that spot the next time you open it. In fact, SMPlayer remembers all of your settings for each video, so if you had to delay the audio by 100 milliseconds to sync it up properly, it will stay synced next time. SMPlayer comes with all of the codecs it needs built-in. It’s fully open source, and available for Windows and Linux. This guide focuses on the Windows version." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

1. guzel fikir; 2. Don't'un ayiraci eksik kalmis; 3. Boyle seyleri FH ile tasarlama. FH'nin gradient'leri banding sorununa yol aciyor. :) - Melih Sancar
1. mersi 2. ayrac yokki, yapmamışım (: 3. FH olsun banding olsun ((: 4. teşekkürler yorumun için... - sy from iPhone
Esasında, gradientlerin oluşturulmasında hiçbir sorun yok. Sorun, FH'nin PostScript desteğindeki yeterlilikle (bkz. bug) ilgili.

- Zafer Emecan
FH tartışması olmuş bak kaçırmışım tüh :P - Hüseyin Usta
Freehand'in tartışması yok. - Zafer Emecan
@Kazım, ikon seti... (: - sy

- Zafer Emecan
İşte buna "lütfetmek" deniyor. Lütfetmişler sana. :) - Kazım Taşkın

I just had a thought. If I could have an iPad and be able to use feedly http://www.feedly.com/ I would have one right away.
We are working hard on feedly for iphone. once that snake is dead. We will look into feedly for ipad. - Edwin Khodabakchian
That is good to hear. - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
Good news, I must insist here, thanks again for the Chrome integration, I was there when it was still unavailable, and was astonished at how it ran after that dev period I have missed. Keep on Edwin, your project's mean a lot to me. Any words on semantic data? It was unavailable on multiple posts I've seen couple months back, was there any stop of use? - Zu from AOD
Edwin, I would most honestly like to have a feature that provides the feeds on top based on the number of times it was read and liked. It would help the entire world by reading only, say 10%, what we must read. A digg of Feedly? - ThinkEzy
I would also like a Popurls like feature. I stopped using Popurls when I joined Feedly. But, I still miss it a lot, especially the flickr feed. The hover effect is wonderful. By the way, what is the Delicious feed that appears in Popurls? That's the only thing I can't get in feedly? - ThinkEzy
Edwin, Feedly has the potential to become one of the killer apps for the iPad. Of course, feedly for the iPhone will be amazing too. I'm looking forward to both of them! - Michael Fidler
Thanks for all the feedback. As soon as we are done with feedly mobile, we will turn out to the community to build the roadmap for feedly 3.5. It would be great if you could raise some of these suggestions at that point. @Michael. iPad is definitely in our radar but need to buy one and play with it for a few weeks before we can start the design work for that. - Edwin Khodabakchian

Paint.Net plugin lets you view and edit Photoshop PSD files
"The aptly-named Paint.Net PSD Plugin is one of those pieces of software which pretty much spells it all out right in the name. It's a plugin...for Paint.Net...(wait for it)...which lets you open files saved in Photoshop's PSD format." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
I use paint.net for all kinds of things... it's just my level of complexity (not very) and still has layers... I love it!!! - SAM

Tried earlier; was getting 500 errors. Will try again. - Mark H
i tried it once but it gave me this : Don't worry, it'll be fixed soon. Unless we're playing the Wii, in which case it may take a while ! - Milad.p from fftogo
It seems to be working now here anyway. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Like other FF alternative's it's got a lot of work to catch up. Nothing of interest here right now. Cliqset is still the better one, though a long way off. - Kol Tregaskes
I refuse to try it until I know how to pronounce it. - Akiva
LOL, Akiva. I can't help you there. - Kol Tregaskes
Oh. Probably like 'insight'. - Akiva
Akiva is correct. - Geoffrey McCaleb
Ah, yes. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Sorry about the 500's guys, we got hit by a lot of users in a short amount of time. Should be fine now. Keep in mind we are just a month old and have a lot of work ahead of us, however we do one thing that FF or even cliqset does not do, we aggregate your friends so you dont have to start over. Still, keep an eye on us we have a lot of cool stuff coming out soon! - Geoffrey McCaleb
Might as well camp while the camping's good. - Akiva
