"Perhaps I am. This doesn't really change my outlook on it though. I don't have much time to read the papers I want to read and if I'm going to be spending my time doing it at all, I'd prefer they have already been published, not in pre-publish form."

"In general, I wouldn't spend any time at a site that has unmoderated content purporting to solve serious problems. For example, a while back someone posted a link to a paper on ArXiV about proving P=NP. Didn't even bother looking at it since the content is unmoderated. Its a waste of my own time. I wasn't saying that it need be CS specific, if theoretical physics papers were published there, I wouldn't be any more/less inclined to read it if it was from ArXiV."

"Pick something you're interested in writing. Could be anything. Then just start trying to write it. It's likely you'll have to read about different topics to learn more in depth about it, then figure out how to do those things in your language of choice. Thats pretty much about it. Also, don't worry about not doing it "the right way", seeing as most of us don't do it the right way the first time anyway (unless you've been doing this for 35 years and have some idea about the problem). Just sit down and start writing. Iterative refinement will teach you lots anyway :)"

"Create a good story. I'll play a game with a good story and mediocre graphics long before I'd play a game with great graphics and a shit story (*ahem* Assassin's Creed, I'm looking at you O_O)."

"C is more portable than C++. Also, what riles said true. If you're having to rewrite from C++ to C then you don't know what you're doing. Also, they're both fast :)."

"The beatings shall continue until morale improves. In other words, beat him till he does something. Then hide the XBox. Or sell it. Then beat him some more. Beatings are the only way."

"Nooooooo BASIC Stamp is fail :(. Actually I just think they're overpriced more than anything. Arduino + a few extras will be cheaper and you'll keep your sanity, not writing BASIC."

I whole-heartedly agree with Schneier on this. I've begun moving away most of my important infos from my Google-associated accounts. I don't trust them or anyone else for that matter with my information. Its becoming increasingly clear I need to maintain my own email servers and storage spaces.

"I had an Android and never thought much of it, the one Sprint sells. I switched to a Blackberry Tour and love it. That said, I wouldn't say I couldn't be convinced to go back to Android. I also like that my Blackberry goes two days with a single charge :)"

"Factor also has OpenGL bindings across Mac/Linux/Windows. Of course there's also Java... others have mentioned things as well, primarily Processing."
