What made you think it was invasive? Nothing about that survey was particularly invasive. All they asked about was your Xbox info, your TV, whether you use a receiver, if you have wireless what router you have, whether you use the 360 for media streaming and how much you use the 360...It's not like they asked for your social security number, birthplace and your mom's maiden name.

Yes, which study(s) was he referring to? These days many/most are accessible online - how hard is it to add the link? Plus, it's an added benefit to his readers, for those who want to read deeper, let alone knowing where the resource came from. As per McWilliams, he is 'cautiously' advocating the use of GE food just floors me. Right away I'm 'cautiously' thinking you-know-who is lining pockets - maybe not his directly, but maybe those studies. Another good reason to keep resources out in the open.

Couldn't agree more, Liz, though I do think some locavores did it to us too. I sort of wish the food miles argument had never been made. Ditto the 100-mile diet. It's like the health talking points below -- I can find my study and you can find yours, we can butt heads over them, but de gustibus non est disputandum, eh? It's all about scale. David v. Goliath. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Google Contacts has been disconnected from Google Reader. I've been able to follow several people since this problem started, but their names only show on my contacts page. I do get their updates as new comments in my Google Reader, but I have no name to attach to groups. I can like their shared items, and also comment on their shared items and my 'comments' label turns to bold text whenever someone updates ( including myself ).

Lot's of people have been trying to use GR as their new social network... this outage (with silence) does not bode well. I fear we'll lose many we gained. It's one thing to be buggy or lack some functionality, but a different thing all together to lose almost all functionality and not keep your users informed. Have we learned nothing?

Just use http://www.google.fr/reader/ instead of http://www.google.de/reader to move from German to French.

Myrna, I have removed everyone from groups on my old page. I still have links to those contacts in GR, and periodically try to add them. No success yet. This may be link rot. Rapid link rot. Here's my new shared items link; http://www.google.com/reader... Until Google gets this straightened out, I"ll be sharing from one page and pushing feeds out of the other. Oh well, it's free. Thanks for your concern, patience and help folks.

Wallace, can't you just go to the French or German page and continue from there. It's the same and I can comment and like everything.

I tried the German and Polish pages, and both behaved as the English (US) page. But never mind that! I just discovered that I can follow my old tagged feeds that I push out of my old account and continue to post in my new account! That means I don't need two accounts! Woo hoo...!

UPDATE FROM GOOGLE: The GR team says "We've rolled out a workaround for this problem, reloading Reader should enable you to see your friends list (and other functionality) correctly again." Everyone, please sign out of Google Reader, restart your browser, login again. It should work. (From GetSatisfaction: http://getsatisfaction.com/google_...)

Yep, we just rolled out a workaround. If you're still having problems after reloading, please reply in the GetSatisfaction thread.

It worked for me without signing out of google and without reloading. Just changed the settings from French to English.

Chris, thanks for the update! I wonder if yours was an extra-special case though, since if the specific use case of someone you're following adding their "Like" stream to Google Profile was the issue, then folks like Louis Gray would also have been affected, since he follows the same people and many more (I believe) than all of us who had the problem.

This reminds me of something I thought Paul wrote up as a blog post, but I can't find. That question is "what if you could change not just the way things are, but the way they have always been?" Apparently the internet is really doing that, if people who can't remember the times before exagerate how long it has been true.

After thinking about this and rereading a bunch of Paul's blog, I'm pretty sure that how and why we travel is going to look very different in 20 years. Not in the flying car sense but in the commuting and being together sense.

One thing I find interesting is that the more education I have gotten, the less certain I am about anything. In graduate school, you finally learn that many of the fundamental concepts of science that you learn as fact in high school and college are actually highly disputed. An example from linguistics: "how do you define what a word is?"

Some things become more uncertain, but in other areas, your confidence becomes strengthened, e.g. some branches of mathematics and their applications. I'd say it's impossible to compress all possible strings in a given axiom system, or crack a one-time-pad used correctly. I've also become more and more "certain" as I get older than I'm an agnostic leaning atheist. :)

jason we want your comments and criticism, but i personally think theway you went about it wasn't ideal. nevertheless, we move on, and as i said publcly on twitter, i think some of your criticisms and your general wariness is legit! so many people expect a lot out of profood and yet we are just doing this on our own, trying to build a base, and involve ourselves in projects. To be hyperbolic, I think its like the American Revolution, we want a total paradigm shift in American food, for our health, for our economy, for taste and heritage, for our future, for the land, for the farmers...etc...

From the moment #ProFood entered my head to today, I have never thought of it as a movement, since such things center on advocacy. What it is to me is a framework or lens for viewing the entrepreneurial landscape of sustainable food to help innovators, inventors and entrepeneurs quickly find their footing and get to work. In some interesting ways, it feels like a replay of the early days of the Internet, especially visions of decentralizing and democratizing select industries, in this case food.
