Completed that invasive survey. Let's see if I get invited to test it out. Curious. - Admiral Anika from Bookmarklet
Does anyone know when the invites to the preview will be rolled out to users? - Admiral Anika
What made you think it was invasive? Nothing about that survey was particularly invasive. All they asked about was your Xbox info, your TV, whether you use a receiver, if you have wireless what router you have, whether you use the 360 for media streaming and how much you use the 360...It's not like they asked for your social security number, birthplace and your mom's maiden name. - Alex Scoble
And how? I had assumed, that if invited, you'd get an update on your Xbox. Then I remembered that this is Microsoft and they do things the hard way and I may have to actually check my hotmail account. - Admiral Anika

Important read: Industrial Agriculture and the Organic Alternative: Rachel Carson’s Contribution
"While Americans like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists, our propensity to accept authority and conform to the status quo runs deep. Carson dismantled the presumption that the people in charge, even in a democracy, would always act with the best interests of the community at heart. She demonstrated convincingly that the commercial, academic and regulatory establishment would at best gloss over and at worst sweep under the rug any less than flattering information about their latest and greatest innovation." - Rob Smart from Bookmarklet

Has anyone read "Just Food:Where Locavores Get It Wrong and How We Can Truly Eat Responsibly."? Just came across the title today, via this newspaper article http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd... and his long-distance food miles vs. eating locally just don't make sense to me (in the article).
i am not so sure its a food miles vs eating locally argument. I think, again, a poorly written article, but the assumption that the author misses is that locavores, people who are committed to eating as much food as possible from local sources, ALSO tend to eat less processed foods. for the author of the article, who cites a statthat 45% of the energy consumed takes place "production... more... - Zachary Adam Cohen from email
at the same time, the mere fact that a book like this is being written seems to me another little small victory - Zachary Adam Cohen
All movements start out 'impractical." This movement is about so much more than just eating locally it represents a need to connect and also nourish our own communities. - Ulla Kjarval
Maybe it is also about food safety & security in the event of a natural or otherwise caused disaster? - Heather Walters
"Consider the winter tomato..." That's where the author lost me. I thought a huge part of locavorism involved eating seasonally as well as regionally. Sloppy research, doesn't seem to really understand the underlying principles of the local food movement at all. - Joya Parsons
with you on that one... - Zachary Adam Cohen from email
When I heard him speak on NPR Talk of the Nation Science Friday he said he was a reformed fundimentalist locavore (as in 100miler or nothing). Fundimentalists always seem to revolt as if everybody else was as rigid as they are. Me, I'll keep drinking coffee. - Brett Henderson from iPhone
well thats good that he's seen the light of not being absolutist at all! - Zachary Adam Cohen
Yes, which study(s) was he referring to? These days many/most are accessible online - how hard is it to add the link? Plus, it's an added benefit to his readers, for those who want to read deeper, let alone knowing where the resource came from. As per McWilliams, he is 'cautiously' advocating the use of GE food just floors me. Right away I'm 'cautiously' thinking you-know-who is lining pockets - maybe not his directly, but maybe those studies. Another good reason to keep resources out in the open. - Cooking Up a Story
It's a major reason why transparency is a tenet of profood. It dovetails nicely with robs idea of the Internet as a democratizer. And effective use of social media requires transparency and authenticity. - Zachary Adam Cohen from email
Writing articles for the internet is different than writing for print, or even broadcast. There is a possibility the article was recycled online from the print version. Even so, a better written print article could have pointed to the study - even if it did come straight from McWilliams' book. Agreed, authenticity and transparency are essential for social media. As for the internet as a... more... - Cooking Up a Story
I find this argument and that BS about the brit 'study' on organics so frustrating. They consistently jimmy the frame of the argument to make theirs. Locavorism is not soley about food miles. It is about taste, community resilience, limited processing, reskilling, and peak oil AND climate, pesticides and other poisongs, terminator seeds and intellectual property, supporting non... more... - Liz McLellan

GO GET'em Liz write that out for public consumption. - Brett Henderson from email
Couldn't agree more, Liz, though I do think some locavores did it to us too. I sort of wish the food miles argument had never been made. Ditto the 100-mile diet. It's like the health talking points below -- I can find my study and you can find yours, we can butt heads over them, but de gustibus non est disputandum, eh? It's all about scale. David v. Goliath. "Between financial rescue missions and the economic stimulus program, government spending accounts for a bigger share of the nation’s economy — 26 percent — than at any time since World War II. Why, oh why, is Google Reader down?

"People You Follow" shows only one item even if there are many unread items. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Our feeds work fine. Can't access shared items! - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
was down also for me but back now - Ouriel Ohayon
ok, it looks like a distributed load problem like Gmail the other day. Thanks Akiva, Ouriel. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
It shows only 1 item even if I have lots of unread items from people I follow. Been trying and checking for over 4 hours now. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Works for me. - Kol Tregaskes
I have a window open from before the crash, and it works except I can't add any new followers. I'm not closing that window this gets fixed. - Wallace
Wallace: Lucky you! :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Google Contacts has been disconnected from Google Reader. I've been able to follow several people since this problem started, but their names only show on my contacts page. I do get their updates as new comments in my Google Reader, but I have no name to attach to groups. I can like their shared items, and also comment on their shared items and my 'comments' label turns to bold text whenever someone updates ( including myself ). - Wallace
Maybe you're right. I can't even get to the people I follow list, since the "You are following..." message is not visible. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
All data about followed and followers has disappeared from Contacts. It was there yesterday so I suspect Wallace is right about the disconnect. - Polly Potter
Well, it's bedtime here in India and I'm all done for the weekend. Let's see how Google Reader behaves tomorrow morning! - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra, I'm having similar problems, and now I can't add any notes or see my own shared items. - Kamilah Gill
Kamilah, the latest shared item of yours that I can see is from two days ago. Have you shared since then? - Wallace
Working for me. - Ben Hanten
Mine has started to screw up. I cannot like or share anything. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, your latest is about DMCA takedown policy. Is this your last shared item? - Wallace
Wallace, I've tried a few more. What is my latest now? I cannot see anything on my Shared Items page. It's all going Pete Tong. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, you posted about concept art - Wallace
Latest share should be 'Manual Toothbrush Handle + Toothpaste Tube Squeezer'. - Kol Tregaskes
Yes Kol, "manual toothbrush" item is displayed. - Wallace
OK, so visual not working but actually working. :-) I still cannot see my shared items, comments view is only partially working. - Kol Tregaskes
Thanks, Wallace. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Your welcome Kol - Wallace
Shares are showing up, but with no profile pictures. Also, my follow list is empty. - Harrison Powers
I'm definitely experiencing "people you follow" being empty. Much angst here. Well, maybe not really. Virtual angst, maybe? Much else on google reader seems fine. :D - Rob Schieber
stll nothing.... - Chris Bellinger
Wallace, I might not have shared anything else in that time span. Can't really remember, I post in so many places. Gr definitely is messed up for me now - Kamilah Gill from email
I see no avatars and no comments in mobile, though comments view has items. I hope thus means some fixes we've wanted are on the way, but some notice would be good. Why are we always being notified after the fact? - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
This is what is happening to me (http://ff.im/7JFoG).. Be careful about using it when it is having problems.. hopefully it is JUST a front end issue!! Kol I'm seeing the same thing!! Anyone else getting javascript errors? - Chris Myles
not working for me, cannot open sharing settings and do not see people I am following - Gerald Hildebrandt
Still the same. Thanks everyone - when I first reported the issue I got swamped with a 'works fine for me' response on Twitter. Now I feel much better. :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Chris - never had any javascript errors at my end. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Google Reader seems to be working great for me. If there are any issues with slowness, I had assigned them to our hotel's network. But yes, you can see I am still sharing items. - Louis Gray
Louis: Many people have reported the issue, so it may be a load distribution problem affecting only some. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
There's a support ticket at JS-Kit Echo that GR shared items are not showing up: http://support.js-kit.com/jskit... - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I guess we'll have to wait till it stops working for Louis. Then we'll get a response from the GR team. :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra, you're very silly. :) Is there a Google Groups discussion going on here? - Louis Gray
Louis, come on, we've all seen it happen before. :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
As a workaround, I've been using the German Google Reader with much success. Same keyboard shortcuts ;) http://www.google.de/reader/ - Harrison Powers
Harrison: that's a brilliant idea! Works like a charm. :) I just discovered there are a dozen new people following me after my article on Feedly yesterday. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I love the internet! Always find an answer somewhere! - David Slater
hmmm doesn't work for me .. hopefully I'm not totally screwed!! - Chris Myles
Lot's of people have been trying to use GR as their new social network... this outage (with silence) does not bode well. I fear we'll lose many we gained. It's one thing to be buggy or lack some functionality, but a different thing all together to lose almost all functionality and not keep your users informed. Have we learned nothing? - Vince DeGeorge
Nothing all day(15 hours) - Myrna
Oh, except I can add new RSS which goes through because I can access the subscription page. - Myrna
That's a quick way to ruin my day. I use Google Reader soo much. - Hunt from FreshFeed
Hunt, same here. Myrna: did you try using the German version? Worked for me. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Thanks Harrison, the German version seems to work for me! Now maybe I can shut the working window down without fear...oops never mind....I'm stuck with the open window.. - Wallace
Yes, I went through most of everyone's items already. So are we in German from now on lol - Myrna
Yes, let's say "Danke Schön, Herr Harrison!" :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Actually - Norwegian & Polish version is working here, too - thanks for the info, Harrison. And well, 'long live open communication!' ;) :) - Hanna Wiszniewska
I'm in German now and it works - M F
German localized version is also working for me (in Germany ;-) ), but not English UI - Gerald Hildebrandt
Hmm, I continue to have the same problems everyone has mentioned with Reader after almost 24 hours now. The German version will work, but I don't read German. Is there a way around the language barrier? - John Ladd
John, you don't have to read German really if you know GR. The posts are in English. If you use the German page you will see how familiar it becomes..mostly! :) - Myrna
What about Jenna. I will message her on fb. She is one of the GR staff. - Myrna
Myrna: Go, girl, go! We need some 'pull' here. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I don't understand why Louis can't shed some light on this issue. Oh well, he's probably playing with his adorable twins on Labor Day weekend. - Myrna
Back to German :) - Myrna
Mine is working; I'm in US. Google Contact info still missing but shows in GR. - Polly Potter
Actually, Reader's working for me although not consistently. I'm often having to mark read a number of articles several times before they're actually marked as such. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, wonder why its working for some and not for others. Most of the people I follow now are working on the German page. - Myrna
I've set up a new Google Account ( wallace.lockhart2@gmail.com ) to try and solve this problem on my end. My new profile page ( http://www.google.com/profile... ) is up, and I've imported all my contacts from my old account ( wallace.lockhart@gmail.com ). My followers/followees are viewable now in my GR so far comments are functional. If someone could visit the new profile, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. - Wallace
Thanks, Myrna. I suppose I should have thought of that! Thanks for pointing out that I was missing the obvious. :P - John Ladd
Wallace, I subbed to your new GR but it is not showing up yet. - Polly Potter
I got it Polly, thanks! It seems to be working now. I'll leave a comment on your latest shared item. - Wallace
Now the English version is busted; can still read subs but people I follow is empty. Can see them in the German version. - Polly Potter
isn't this fun? - Chris Myles
Ok, I thought it was just me. Thanks, Hanna, for pointing me in the right direction. - Damond Nollan
German UI does not provide Send To functionality - Gerald Hildebrandt
Is GR trying to implement rssCloud? - Polly Potter
Now it seems to no longer be working for me. I haven't seen an update in hours. - Akiva Moskovitz
I think Google is out to lunch for the Labor Day weekend. - Wallace
Can't blame 'em. - Akiva Moskovitz
ok.. Mine is still down, and had been since Saturday morning. There is a GetSatisfaction ticket open http://getsatisfaction.com/google_... - Jez Arnold
Just adding that I too have this issue, I am also mentioning it on the get satisfaction ticket. - Alex Kessinger
Jez: Thanks for pointing to the GS ticket. Added myself. Geez, when is this going to be fixed? - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Hey all, I moved from the German page to the French. It's working fine. Do you know how to get there? Think its settings. - Myrna
Wallace, I still see your old account but I can't comment on your page. I can comment on most others. Does it have anything to do with groups? - Myrna
Just use http://www.google.fr/reader/ instead of http://www.google.de/reader to move from German to French. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Myrna/Wallace: Think so. Because in order to comment, the user should have added you to a group. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Myrna, I have removed everyone from groups on my old page. I still have links to those contacts in GR, and periodically try to add them. No success yet. This may be link rot. Rapid link rot. Here's my new shared items link; http://www.google.com/reader... Until Google gets this straightened out, I"ll be sharing from one page and pushing feeds out of the other. Oh well, it's free. Thanks for your concern, patience and help folks. - Wallace
Wallace, can't you just go to the French or German page and continue from there. It's the same and I can comment and like everything. - Myrna
I tried the German and Polish pages, and both behaved as the English (US) page. But never mind that! I just discovered that I can follow my old tagged feeds that I push out of my old account and continue to post in my new account! That means I don't need two accounts! Woo hoo...! - Wallace
ENGLISH is working now!!!! - Myrna
Not for everyone... I'm still down. - Vince DeGeorge
I'm still down. And out for the night. Got to go to work in the am. I make pasta, so remember, pasta is the new potato.... - Wallace
Wow! Thanks, Myrna. Hope it works soon for everyone else. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
All the best, Wallace. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
UPDATE FROM GOOGLE: The GR team says "We've rolled out a workaround for this problem, reloading Reader should enable you to see your friends list (and other functionality) correctly again." Everyone, please sign out of Google Reader, restart your browser, login again. It should work. (From GetSatisfaction: http://getsatisfaction.com/google_...) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Yep, we just rolled out a workaround. If you're still having problems after reloading, please reply in the GetSatisfaction thread. - Mihai Parparita
It worked for me without signing out of google and without reloading. Just changed the settings from French to English. - Myrna

In case you are wondering what happened, the response is here http://ff.im/7JFoG. - Chris Myles
Chris, thanks for the update! I wonder if yours was an extra-special case though, since if the specific use case of someone you're following adding their "Like" stream to Google Profile was the issue, then folks like Louis Gray would also have been affected, since he follows the same people and many more (I believe) than all of us who had the problem. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)

"I'm a Republican so I'm not allowed to see it." *sighs* I just love that the kid used the word allowed, since that is exactly what it is. because ignorance and blind following has worked so so well through history. This reminds me of something I thought Paul wrote up as a blog post, but I can't find. That question is "what if you could change not just the way things are, but the way they have always been?" Apparently the internet is really doing that, if people who can't remember the times before exagerate how long it has been true. - Clare Dibble
here is a link to the post I was thinking of: http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2007... - Clare Dibble
After thinking about this and rereading a bunch of Paul's blog, I'm pretty sure that how and why we travel is going to look very different in 20 years. Not in the flying car sense but in the commuting and being together sense. - Clare Dibble
From that post of Paul's: "As you consider this, you may begin to sense gaps in your reality. If certainty is gone, then nothing is definitely impossible." One thing I find interesting is that the more education I have gotten, the less certain I am about anything. In graduate school, you finally learn that many of the fundamental concepts of science that you learn as fact in high school and college are actually highly disputed. An example from linguistics: "how do you define what a word is?" - Robert Felty
Some things become more uncertain, but in other areas, your confidence becomes strengthened, e.g. some branches of mathematics and their applications. I'd say it's impossible to compress all possible strings in a given axiom system, or crack a one-time-pad used correctly. I've also become more and more "certain" as I get older than I'm an agnostic leaning atheist. :) - Ray Cromwell

Joya & Neal: I have no intention of harassing anyone. I also don't candy coat my rhetoric. My friends find this charming. Sorry to have ruffled your feathers ... I'm much more likable in person. I have been actively engaged in community-based food systems my whole life. I grew-up in rural New England, hunting & fishing.
We bought meat direct from farmers every year. We raised chickens in the back yard. - Jason Gollan
jason we want your comments and criticism, but i personally think theway you went about it wasn't ideal. nevertheless, we move on, and as i said publcly on twitter, i think some of your criticisms and your general wariness is legit! so many people expect a lot out of profood and yet we are just doing this on our own, trying to build a base, and involve ourselves in projects. It's all very exciting and wonderful, but terrifying too as I am sure you can imagine, because there is no template that exists - Zachary Adam Cohen
Jason I would LOVE to hear your vision for how profood should evolve, what we NEED in terms of experience and actionable items, how we should continue building the community, what projects we shoudl go after, what we can and cannot do...etc....We all respect you and want your input dearly. - Zachary Adam Cohen
Z - being comfortable with ambiguity is something that entrepreneurs take for granted. I stand by my opinion that food is food, and that anything that calls itself a movement is suspect, at best. - Jason Gollan
sure sure agreed you know that I am suspicious of self conscious movements, but i also know the power of people powered bottom up movements, and ProFood definitely is one of those. To be hyperbolic, I think its like the American Revolution, we want a total paradigm shift in American food, for our health, for our economy, for taste and heritage, for our future, for the land, for the farmers...etc... - Zachary Adam Cohen
Anything successful starts with what does the target consider value. And then, how can that be delivered consistently. To me, this whole thing boils down to provenance. Combine the waxing social trend of transparency with the recent spate of food recalls, & you have the underlying drivers of this larger trend. - Jason Gollan
Jason- tune in Sunday night for the first ProFood chat-- those are exactly the kinds of issues and questions we'll be addressing - Joya Parsons
I think the main idea of a movement is to gather a group of likeminded people together to sound ideas off of. We are all working to the same goal so why not collectivise? Besides it sounds so much more pc than revolution - Neal Foley from iPhone
In my consulting practice, I'm working with two clients, they are cousin companies, on the implementation of a traceability system that will make this a reality. The application of IT solutions to this problem is a HUGE opportunity! This is best evidenced by the launch of several of these kinds of start-ups ... some software, some web-based, some both. - Jason Gollan
love the scalability built into that approach jason! - Zachary Adam Cohen from email

Z- also, the more we all focus on entrepreneurship RATHER than advocacy, the sooner this can come "out of the lab." To do that, we'll need a combination of factors come together. What the Iowa State policy wonks call a "values-based value chain." I prefer the simpler value chain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... as I believe that properly operated businesses are inherently grounded in good ethics. - Jason Gollan
From the moment #ProFood entered my head to today, I have never thought of it as a movement, since such things center on advocacy. What it is to me is a framework or lens for viewing the entrepreneurial landscape of sustainable food to help innovators, inventors and entrepeneurs quickly find their footing and get to work. In some interesting ways, it feels like a replay of the early days of the Internet, especially visions of decentralizing and democratizing select industries, in this case food. - Rob Smart
More succinctly, #ProFood is the Business of Sustainable Food. - Rob Smart
