Ricoh GR Digital III Review | PhotographyBLOG
"The Ricoh GR Digital III is a brand new compact camera aimed firmly at the serious photographer. Identical in design to the previous GR Digital II model, this latest version has undergone some serious internal upgrades, with a brand new lens, image processing engine and LCD screen. The 28mm fixed focal length lens now has a maximum aperture of f/1.9, the GR ENGINE III image processor promises enhanced image quality and speed, and the LCD screen is a high-resolution 3 inch model with 920,000 dots. At the heart of the GR Digital III is a new “high-sensitivity” 1/1.75-inch CCD sensor with 10 megapixels. The new DR shooting mode exploits this by taking two photos at different exposures and combining them to create a single image with expanded dynamic range. The new full-press snap function shoots at a preset distance with a one-push full-press of the shutter button. Images can be recorded either as JPEGs or in the Adobe DNG RAW format, there’s a pop-up flash and an external hotshoe which... more... - Zach Landes from Bookmarklet

"I'm coming to Fry's defense here! 1) They are cheap 2) Their dazzling selection makes this place absolute geek heaven 3) One can assume that the receipt check upon exit reduces the occurrence of shoplifting. Note that the much-heralded Costco does the *exact* same thing. Best Buy stores, which are smaller, instead rely on catching perpetrators in the act with video surveillance, though it's likely that the security guard at the camera at Best Buy is just looking down some girl's shirt. 4) Big deal they didn't have a big sign announcing Snow Leopard! 5) A company that focuses on customer service while charging higher prices is not necessarily morally superior - they are just fulfilling a different market niche. and 6) Apple tries to upsell warranties, too, don't kid yourself!" - Zach Landes

While psychology has traditionally concerned itself with what ails the human mind--such as anxiety, depression, neurosis, obsessions, paranoia, and delusions--, a new branch of psychology, aptly named “positive psychology”, asks the question: "What are the enabling conditions that make human beings flourish?" That is, the goal of positive psychology is to study what actively makes people feel fulfilled, engaged, and happy." - Zach Landes from Bookmarklet

I need help: which camera would you pick for travel and nature photography? The Canon G11 or the Canon S90? More decision criteria below.
1. I am a world traveler. I go to (slightly) sketchy places. I shoot in urban, rural, and backcountry. - Zach Landes
2. I am not an advanced photographer, but I'd like to take better pictures and get into using manual controls. - Zach Landes
3. I want to take pictures on hikes and while backpacking. - Zach Landes
4. I have no plans to take action shots. - Zach Landes
I think the biggest question is going to be whether you want to put the camera in your pocket or not...if not, I'd go with the G11, otherwise, S90. I haven't read much about either yet, but from what I have read, they both sound amazing - Justin Korn
For traveling, I grab one with a nice zoom and neither have that. - Rodfather
Well, one question would be how important a polarizing filter is for outdoor photography? Because the G11, with an adaptor, can take on lens filters - and the S90 can't. It also has a more powerful zoom than the S90. OTOH, who wouldn't want to travel with a camera in their pocket vs. a bulkier camera in a bag or pack. - Zach Landes
Rodfather is on to what i was going to address. But I will attempt to take it one step further. Zach, you said nature...as in birds? or as in landscapes? say you had to pick one of the two...which one do you think you'd focus on? if your response is "birds" neither camera will give you what you want. just a thought. - Carlos Ayala
Me personally, I travel with my dSLR with an 18-200 lens as well as my Luminx L2. I have my dSLR insured in case anything happens to it and backup the pictures often. The backup *almost* never leaves my body. - Justin Korn
Carlos, I'd say landscapes. I am interested in capturing the feel of the places where I travel more than the fauna. I call this nature because it involves forests, farms, canyons, and jungles. - Zach Landes
To be clear, I should add 5. I travel light. A dedicated bag for my camera and accessories is unacceptable for me (beyond a basic protective bag). - Zach Landes
you should be fine with either. both, arguably, possess better specs than past era SLRs. Hopefully, this will lead you into an addiction that is not only expensive...but very very satisfying. Good Luck. - Carlos Ayala
I think you are looking for the S90 then. Unless you want further control and accessories that the G11 brings, the S90 is the light choice. - Justin Korn
I also read somewhere that with a lens adapter fitted, the G11 is less likely to get dust and other crap in the lens than is an s90 or similar. Is this a big consideration? Also, is 3x zoom enough for typical landscape and architectural photog or is 28-105 a dealbreaker? - Zach Landes
The S90's definitely the more portable of the two. You don't need a dedicated bag for either but the G11 provides more options (flash, filters, etc) if you ever need them. I'd favor the S90 for a travel cam. - ronin
Never had an issue with dust and p&s cameras so I don't think it's a big deal. For landscape/architecture, you don't usually care about zoom, you want the wide end. Both are set at 28mm which is decently wide. - ronin
If you don't need manual controls, I'd look into something like the Panasonic ZS3. It's compact, 25mm wide lens, 12x zoom, and records 720p movies using AVCHD-lite. - Rodfather
One last wrench to throw into the works: what if I also happen to own an Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 for my most rugged outings? If I'm not taking either of these cameras out kayaking, rock climbing, fly fishing etc. does that change which camera would be the other one in my rotation? - Zach Landes
to address the filter question -- when outdoors, and specifically landscapes, i religiously shoot with a Neutral gradient density filter (i actually layer two filters in a bracket). Its really the only way to get a blue sky (and clouds) when the sun is out in force. - Carlos Ayala
Carlos, can I achieve (nearly) the same thing with post-processing? The S90 shoots in RAW. - Zach Landes
it depends. the general answer is yes. anything is possible especially if you add photoshop into the mix. but the technical response is, if the color information is not there...its not there. you have to add it. using a filter...the color is naturally there. this does not mean that there is no post involved, though. - Carlos Ayala

Bolt has the sweet 3 column setup - Zach Landes
Bolt works the best on the Storm (besides the BB browser). - Ryan - @magicofpi
Ryan, how so? - Zach Landes
Well, Opera doesn't really support the SureType screen - where you have to touch the screen then click down. It'll activate the links on the touch, not the click. Plus, it's a bit hard to use the address bar for some reason... Anyway, Bolt is plenty fast for me. - Ryan - @magicofpi
Bolt is the fastest for me. Opera Mini downloads large files. BB Browser isn't bad at rendering pages (on a Tour) so I usually stick with that. - Zach Flauaus
Yeah, the BB browser isn't too bad - but if it's a relatively complex page, I'll use Bolt. - Ryan - @magicofpi

Young-ish actresses that are highly watchable: 1. Kate Winslett 2. Rachel Weisz 3. Natalie Portman 4.Milla Jovovich 5. Zooey Deschanel
I 100% agree with that list. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
<3 Jandy. Too bad the only one who has been in more than a handful of good films is Winslett. - Zach Landes
Yeah, Winslet seems to the be the only one who chooses films really carefully. Rachel Weisz has The Constant Gardener, The Fountain, The Brothers Bloom, and some others, though, to offset Constantine and the Mummy films (though I have to admit the first Mummy movie was pretty fun). Milla seems determined NOT to do any good films (other than The Fifth Element), and Zooey's usually the best part of her films. Ah well. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I agree with your overall assessment but have to nitpick the list you made - you didn't list any really great films (well, I havent seen the fountain, so dunno)! The constant gardener is good, but a little heavy on the whole "Africa has so much to offer if only it weren't so f'ed up!". Constantine, which I dare you to watch again, is surprisingly good (though not great)! The fifth... more... - Zach Landes
First of all, I didn't say "great", I said good. Also, both Constant Gardener and The Fountain are in my top five for their respective years. And what's wrong with Die Hard-style action scenes? Die Hard is one of the best action films ever made. And finally, pretty much all I liked about Yes Man was Zooey and seeing my fave LA spots on film. Haven't seen Go-Getter or Joan of Arc. Oh,... more... - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF from iPhone
1. Constant Gardener is good, but I don't ever *plan* to see it again (not saying I wouldn't, though). Part of the problem is that I think the director wasn't quite sure what story he wanted to tell...the husband, the wife, or Africa? By choosing all three as his focus, he didn't focus enough on any one. 2. There is nothing wrong with Die Hard action scenes - in Die Hard. In the fifth... more... - Zach Landes
Totally disagree on The Constant Gardener. The thing that made it stand out to me was how well-balanced Meirelles kept the different genres he was working with - romance, social drama, thriller. I usually don't like it either when directors can't choose what they're doing, but they all melded well in The Constant Gardener and meshed together believably. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF

The Jennifer Love Hewitt way to play tennis... wear heels and a bikini | Mail Online
"It's unlikely to catch on, but Jennifer Love Hewitt has decided wedge heels and a bikini is the latest tennis fashion. While it's doubtful Serena Williams or Jelena Jankovic would ever be seen wearing them, Jennifer appears to be under the impression the skimpy outfit improves her performance on the court. The Ghost Whisperer actress certainly turned heads in Hawaii recently when she snubbed the usual uniform of a white skirt and T-shirt for a black bikini and slingback wedges." - Zach Landes from Bookmarklet

P2Peer Education: Bringing Elite Education to the Masses
"About a year ago, a friend posed to me the following question: ”Why do students plunk down $150,000 for a 4-year education at MIT when virtually all of the courseware is available free of charge online?” Not only was it a great question, but answering it is critical to bringing elite levels of higher education to the online masses. Like so many other industries, early attempts at delivering online education have generally consisted of making available the same content that’s found offline. While this is a good start, the key to online education is amplifying the way in which we learn when we’re at school — from our peers." - Zach Landes from Bookmarklet
