above the regression line are stories for which public interest exceeded coverage (e.g., health care, federal stimulus, and obama's inauguration). below the line are stories for which supply outstripped demand (afghanistan, ted kennedy's death, and most political stories). of course, interest here is self-reported.

driving the one-way streets in boston and cambridge is maddening -- until you know the route, at which point it's incredibly satisfying, if not entirely efficient, like navigating an ancient labyrinth that only you know how to escape.

i'd really like to see a novel — not by tom wolfe, if we can help it — in which the protagonist, living off his severance from bear stearns, spends most of 2008 navigating the wreckage of downtown manhattan (financial wreckage but, yes, that would not be lost on the book). at some point, we'd have to swing through midtown to deal with my new obsession: the massive signage outside the barclays (née lehman brothers) building that, amid the brightest lights in the city, somehow manages to shine brighter than any other, casting the entire block in a tanning-bed blue. and, of course, the final chapter would just be an embed of this video: http://youtu.be/KLRPGJ8sDbU

i'm still thinking about the destruction of hometree as a -- similarly unsubtle but still compelling -- recreation of 9/11, which would make 'avatar' the first great 9/11 film. so far, i've had no takers on this line of thought.

cultural analysis in the brief he's citing: "Frugality is the new fashion and likely to stay that way for years as attitudes toward discretionary spending, homeownership and credit undergo a secular shift towards prudence and conservatism....There is a youth unemployment crisis in the United States of epic proportions, and a record number of Americans have been out of work for longer than six months in part because the 'aging but not aged' crowd is not retiring as early as they used to."

having rewatched 'jerry maguire' a handful of times in the past two years and not understood why i find it so captivating, this was really helpful...

think this fits in the same category as those boston high schools using 'the great gatsby' to teach students how to strive: http://nyturl.com/wo

hooray for 'true blood' making the list with all these network shows! it also ranks 10th among my own google searches for the year (yours available here: http://www.google.com/history...).

much as i'm loathe to bring in calculus, i think this equation requires a derivative to account for shows like "bored to death," which are consistently awful at their start but recover late in the season. (mike, amirite?)
