I love that two people mentioned otherinbox right away. I've heard that's good, just never got around to using it. I turn most of my notifications off at the services themselves, but it depends how granular the choices are. Sometimes I do miss a bit by having them turned off, especially if it's a place like LinkedIn, where I wouldn't normally go to the site, but some of the notifications are of interest. - Laura Norvig

the auto-delete on a filter seems to kill this problem for everyone except for the sender and google. You could, of course, tell Facebook, foursquare, etc to stop emailing you. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
