"The consumer as producer? Please. The truth behind that Web 2.0 cliche is that the consumer is a producer of debt, massive amounts of circulating, productive debt, debt that is split and bundled, bought and sold, insured and serviced. [...] We can resist their ads and commercials, their fads and fashions. We don't need one in every color. We aren't consumers, not any more. That's not who we are. That's not a name for the people. It's a name for the industries that rely on us, consuming our incomes, desires, and futures, the best of our imaginations and energies. [...] And maybe for the first time in too long a time we are in the midst of the political process that is uttering another name for the people, the only proper name. The workers." - Goran Zec

Obama’s politics is governed by an anti-political fantasy. It is the call to find common ground, the put aside our differences and achieve union. Obama’s politics is governed by a longing for unity, for community, for communion and the common good. The remedy to the widespread disillusion with Bush’s partisan politics is a reaffirmation of the founding act of the United States, the hope of the more perfect union expressed in the opening sentence of the US Constitution. It is a powerful moral strategy whose appeal to the common good attempts to draw a veil over the agonism and power relations constitutive of political life. The great lie of moralism in politics is that it attempts to deny the fact of power by concealing it under an anti-political veneer. At the same time, moralism engages in the most brutal and bruising political activity. But the reality of this activity is always disavowed along with any and all forms of partisanship. Moralistic politics is essentially hypocritical. - Tomislav Medak

"Today’s meltdown is the price paid for the United States avoiding a prolonged recession five years ago. The danger is that the predominant narrative of the meltdown will be the one that, instead of waking us from a dream, will enable us to continue to dream. And it is here that we should start to worry — not only about the economic consequences of the meltdown, but also about the obvious temptation to reinvigorate the “war on terror” and U.S. interventionism in order to keep the economy running." - Goran Zec

"In 1944, for example, the Netherlands suffered a brutal famine [...] the researchers reported that today they still have fewer epigenetic marks than their siblings. They suggest that pregnant mothers could not supply their children with the raw ingredients for epigenetic marks. In at least some cases, these new epigenetic patterns may be passed down to future generations. Eva Jablonski and Gal Raz of Tel Aviv University in Israel assemble a list of 101 cases in which a trait linked to an epigenetic change was passed down through three generations For example, Matthew Amway of Washington State University and his colleagues found that exposing pregnant rats to a chemical for killing fungus disrupted the epigenetic marks in the sperm of male embryos. The embryos developed into adult rats that suffered from defective sperm and other disorders, like cancer. The males passed down their altered epigenetic marks to their own offspring, which passed them down to yet another generation." - Goran Zec

- Goran Zec

"We live in two Americas. One America, now the minority, functions in a print-based, literate world. It can cope with complexity and has the intellectual tools to separate illusion from truth. The other America, which constitutes the majority, exists in a non-reality-based belief system. This America, dependent on skillfully manipulated images for information, has severed itself from the literate, print-based culture. It cannot differentiate between lies and truth. It is informed by simplistic, childish narratives and clichés. It is thrown into confusion by ambiguity, nuance and self-reflection. This divide, more than race, class or gender, more than rural or urban, believer or nonbeliever, red state or blue state, has split the country into radically distinct, unbridgeable and antagonistic entities." - Goran Zec
"During the 2000 debates, George W. Bush spoke at a sixth-grade level (6.7) and Al Gore at a seventh-grade level (7.6). In the 1992 debates, Bill Clinton spoke at a seventh-grade level (7.6), while George H.W. Bush spoke at a sixth-grade level (6.8), as did H. Ross Perot (6.3). In the debates between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, the candidates spoke in language used by 10th-graders. In the debates of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas the scores were respectively 11.2 and 12.0." - Goran Zec

The tool compares geographical maps with several other forms of beautifully rendered visual presentation (such as scatterplots and focus maps) while using different mechanisms for selecting specific groups of regions. "Old is courage, stamina, guts, wisdom, understanding. Old is gentleness, joy, continuity. Old is defiance, acceptance, patience, sensitivity and compassion. And viewed in its proper context, old is beauty of singular radiance, a beauty achieved through the individuality possible only through aging. As Madeleine Engle writes in Two Part Invention, “there is little character in the face of someone who has avoided suffering, shunned risk and rejected life.” It is literally impossible to reach one’s 70s without having experienced risk, known suffering and obviously not rejected life. We’re here, aren’t we!" - Goran Zec

even when aXXo uploads a relatively unknown movie—Loaded and Boy A are two recent examples—it's still liable to make his most-downloaded list.
- Goran Zec

"One of the powerful things about the food issue is that people feel empowered by it. There are so many areas of our life where we feel powerless to change things, but your eating issues are really primal. You decide every day what you’re going to put in your body—and what you refuse to put in your body. That’s politics at its most basic." - Goran Zec

Listening to the sine-wave speech sound again produces a very different percept. This form of pop-out is an example of a top-down perceptual process of perceptual learning produced by higher-level knowledge and expectations. Having heard several examples of sine-wave speech, your perceptual system has tuned into this form of distortion, so as to be able to perceive new sine-wave speech sentences more clearly. There are a number of examples of perceptual insight in the visual domain that have been documented. - Ognjen Strpić
