Has anyone stopped to think about what those"save the earth people/tree huger's/hippies" types drive? The VW bus and bugs one of the worst polluting vehicles. give's new meaning to "Save the Earth suck more carbon"

Well unfortunately, those tree huggers and hippies can't afford newer, better cars because they don't make much being activists. However, their carbon footprint overall is so vastly reduced, that them driving a VW bus doesn't bring them anywhere near to the gross polluter status that most Americans exhibit with their lifestyles. I can buy myself a Smartcar, but until I start living completely off the grid, I'm still a gross polluter.

@Amanda: brilliant stuff. a lot of environmental hand-waving can get you a Nobel PEACE prize--something that struck me as odd, but whatever--not to mention the $1M purse that goes along with the medal. I saw 'An Inconvenient Truth' when it first came out and left the theater shaking my head at the audacity of his allegations, but people bought into it! all that being said, I don't think Gore is an idiot; he is just pandering to a growing group within the population that is misinformed either by choice or design. there needs to be a compromise from both sides, that's what eventually is going to happen, and the world will be better off for it.

I consider Gore an idiot not because of his film but because of how huge a hypocrite he's been. He presents us with this film, and all this data, and asks us to think about the environment...and then he does little to show us that he's walking the talk. Perhaps "idiot" is too strong a word, but there it is. I can't unsay what I've already said.

if you think of environmentalism as a religion and accept that there are radicals in every religion, then you just write it off as par for the course and move on. it's when the radicals get listened to by the masses that you have to worry; the Taliban, Hitler, etc. But doesn't that usually happen under extreme circumstances? well said Amanda, I'm with you. I want Berkeley to do what they do, although I don't always agree with them. Every side needs to be heard and represented. it's just frustrating to me that in the western world one side is only getting heard via the media. i'm not asking people to bathe in oil, but please consider the many benefits delivered by having it in our lives. our modern society was built on petroleum, we'll find a way past it most likely in the next century only because it's running out.

Amanda you shouldn't get frustrated with me :P, just blame Davis I do....They aren't the only ones I take notice of. Those so called peaceful protests that some how end up causing millions of dollars of damage. The auto ceo's flying in on jets. Some of those peta people who save the animals and some times burn down building. Davis who did Radiation testing on thousands of dogs and then buried them in the creek ( you know which one). Or wasting tax payers money to build a tunnel for frogs that don't use it.

Having spent some time with Warhammer, WoW just looks crappy to me. I don't know why they don't make another client for people with modern hardware, a la Eve Online.

I dig the more cartoony nature of WoW versus the other games out there, to be honest. Did Guild Wars for awhile, which was a bit more realistic looking, but that got really boring. And for as "crappy" as WoW is graphically, it's still pretty decent and has some consistent landscape effects.

I understand they have a huge subscription base running the game on old hardware that they don't want to lose, but why not do a second client for those with the hardware to run it? If you're more pvp than pve oriented in WoW, you should check out Warhammer -- it's quite a bit more hard core, and is much less kiddie-looking.

Warhammer was too much of a snoozer for me. And way too PvP (which is why I left Guild Wars in the dust extremely early on). To each their own, I guess. I hate jumping through PvE hoops...wanna kill stuff -- and by "stuff" I mean things that fight back intelligently. WAR's superior PvP/PvR makes it much more entertaining to me than WoW. And it's not just that WoW is not the greatest looking thing out there -- it looks really, really antiquated. With WotLK they have upped the polys, but still it doesn't look bad for a game that was released in 2004! Besides, the biggest gripper WoW has is the vivid Lore - tho much of it is ripped from warhammer anyway. I've known plenty of people who have gone off to play AoC and WAR... every time, they end up back in WoW because they simply don't compare. Oh, and if it isn't a Horde toon, you've made a mistake ;)

LoTRO i haven't tried yet.WoW + WothLK yes, of course as well as Runes of Magic (RoM), Warhammer Online and now Lost Chaos. The 'graphic engine' of WoW might appeal already a bit 'outdated', but as alphaxion wrote, imho WoW doesn't look bad after all. What i currently don't get out of my head: Will Blizz continue with the - somewhat 'expensive' monthly subscription fee - whilst RoM and other 'free to play' games get millions (!) of new fans? (Rd today, RoM, for Germany Frogster, is good biz / shop payment)

LOTRO is beautiful to look at but the gameplay puts me to sleep. My guild at the time that game came out tried to migrate over to it and ended up coming back within a week. @Joe: one of my main alts is a Tauren Hunter. Suckit. :P

Today is Tuesday. Independence Day is this Saturday. That means that, in theory, I have Friday off. The question is, how best to broach the subject with Boss.... Sasha, normally when July 4th falls on a weekend it is observed on the closest weekday, but this year seems to be a bit different. The Federal Reserve isn't observing it on Friday, which means banks aren't closing this year.

My plan didn't work at all. I asked what he was doing for the 4th this weekend and he said "kayaking" which is what he does every weekend. He didn't even think about the fact that it was the 4th. Most companies large enough to have an HR department do pay time and a half to hourly employees that work on holidays. When I was a CSR I would work almost every holiday b/c you got 1.5 your rate PLUS the holiday pay. Since I'm salary now, that would no longer apply (though I would probably get a comp day in trade for working a holiday if I did).

staying indoors, it's not worth the hassle of the check points and bad drivers. Plus I can see the fire works where I live.

Over the weekend, I was at my father-in-law's house in eastern NC. He beefed up his antenna and now gets like 15 digital stations from 90 mile radius. Also has Direct TV. 15 local + 200 satellite stations, we could not find a single thing we wanted to watch. Beach volleyball on the NBC sub-channel was what we waited on to begin.

I don't know how people watch TV without a DVR. When we don't have anything recorded, it's horrible trying to find something (it usually winds up just sitting on HGTV or Food). I really miss Tivo's automatic recorded suggestions.

LOL, Paul...we end up HGTV as often as not as well. Our other fallbacks are Animal Planet, NatGeo, and Discovery, though Food does make it in sometimes. Mostly recordings, On Demand, or Roku, though. (OK, mostly it's off, but you know I mean. When it's on.) When I'm at home during the day by myself, I'll watch C-SPAN/2/3, but that doesn't usually fly in the evenings. *grin*

We actually don't have a real central air system in this house. Just a couple of window AC's...one in the kitchen/living room, and one in the computer room. So the rest of the house suffers. My room is stifling during the day. The worst part is that the walls aren't insulated. So. Yeah. It's boiling in the summer, freezing in the winter.

For me it ebbs and flows. Then again, I am at an age (34) where I recognize that there are other things that I need to get done in my day and/or week before I can sit down and play. I kind of "reward" myself with gameplay when I'm done with chores, homework, or other such responsibilities. Though I will admit that once in a blue moon I will free up an entire weekend to just eat pizza and play WoW. :) It's nice to just be a slouch every now and then. :D If I were a kid though? Hoo boy. I'd be in trouble. :D

Theirry, that is very fortunate. It's a time sink. Won't lie there. :) But an enjoyable time sink :D And I second Mike's motion...dailies are a priority! That's where you build rep and cash money, yo. Pays for that cold weather flying skill (the biggest rook in the history of the game, IMO).

A bit of advice for the hardcore player........people who don't play don't care about your character or your purple sparkly armor, we...I mean they are just being polite when you go on and on and on...and on. My husband loves WoW and wanted me to play too at first until I explained to him that one of us still has to take care of the kids and communicate with the outside world.

I haven't seen any of those, except an episode or two of Ghost in the Shell: SAC. I guess they're all series? I've pretty much only seen movies. I'd like to branch out, though...

Yeah, those are all series. Gunslinger Girls was ok, but too short to be one of the best. And Neon Genesis? Boring! Rahxephon did that genre a lot better. Hellsing is good stuff though.

ronin: If I was FORCED to choose, I'd say Zeta Gundam. Perhaps one of the great masterpieces of all time. The original series, 0080, and 08th MS Team are all sublimely fantastic, though. Zehn: agreed, Macross is another spectacular anime, essential. Check out Macross Zero! LANjackal: NGE is MANDATORY viewing. You will either hate it or love it.

Mike: Have not seen Zeta yet but agree with 0080 and 08th MS Team. 0080 was supremely depressing though. Macross is always good for its awesome mecha combat scenes. The latest (Macross Frontier) was superb in that aspect.
