I thought these were suggestions made by other people not the automatic "you know their friends so you must know them" method?

Yes, the "suggested by" gives it away. It's not the "you might also know…" automated recommendation. It says more about your friends than it does about Facebook.

That was my understanding too. These are friends your friends suggest. Interesting circles you run in; I can't imagine a real person putting that rear shot as a profile pic on fb.

sometimes I acidently end up accepting these as they feel just like actual friend requests. That bottom new friend might take some explaining to my wife. Facebook ought to consider letting users turn this feature off if they'd like. I know I'd turn it off.

I have 587 unread messages in my Facebook inbox. I actually read all them through e-mail, and there's no good way to mark all as read. Facebook sucks for e-mail-like communication (as does Twitter).

At least facebook should not show the same suggested friends again and again once we hit X on it but it does show them repeatedly. Very annoying :(

4647 is alot Geoff. I hate all forms of email myself actually. It feel burdensome feeling that you have to respond to someone or risk offending them. I much prefer interacting with people directly in forums like FriendFeed or DMU on Flickr in public than one on one. Email should be reserved for things that really do need to be kept private.

Thomas: Yeah my Facebook is pretty hectic and I although I do read my messages on there, I can not keep up with them at the rate they come in. I rarely use email at all these days though unless it is to send files to someone. I just hope one day i will not have to find an old message on Facebook, haha

I am so with you. It's annoying. I spend the most time on Facebook x-ing out people I've never heard of that might be my friends. It gets better. Yesterday I got a notification - where my high priority Scrabble and Lexulous pings turn up - of some guy, never heard of him either, that had just joined FB and did I want to suggest friends. WTF?

@scobleizer: Your right, I am not including every network however, it has to qualify under certain criteria before I deem the site useful enough to be included in the database. If it has little or no value then it will be of no use to my visitors also.

Robert: All this data will be released for free, a filterable database by various criteria, a free pdf document giveaway and eventually a fully comprehensive website will be created searchable by keyword tag and also filterable. For free. I think many people will find it very useful come the end. :)

There are 'social media gurus' telling people they can attract more followers, by spam-broadcasting hundreds of #followfriday recommendations. The idea is that the spammer ends up in the @reply tab of everyone they recommend, and a percentage of those people will follow the spammer. It's total bullcrap!

sorry for bad spelling (='absent' - I am mixing my languages in phonetic artsy ways). I would love to see a 'feature' where one of my trusted 'friends' (all you around here would do) would have 'privilege' access to my own feed - so whenever one of us nukes a spam-bot or money-guru it gets killed for the rest of us. Of course, that can be a tricky feature - but no anti-spam-script can do what we, as a community could.

Jim: Ahh I see where your coming from, yeah I feel there is little value behind the #followfriday hashtag now. What was once a great idea if used sparingly and for real valuable sources just isn't the case anymore (especially once it was spread out across the rest of the week using #followmonday, #followtuesday and so on). I am surprised there is not a method in place to block hashtags from entering your feed.

Thomas, http://friendfeed.com/sarahla... or http://friendfeed.com/sarahla... will have comment boxes at the bottom always so you don't even need to click - opening the entry/item in it's own window is the key (clicking the timestamp like josh haley said will do that) then if you want the clean embed version you just add ?embed=1 to the url, or click the timestamp again - it's that simple
