I'm someone who was saddened by a bat being killed. It's hard for me to verbalize why but I've been thinking about it. Mostly I get upset when people get angry at animals when they're just being animals. It's like getting upset that animals have fur. You can't get angry at a wild animal when it's doing what's in its nature.
=( I agree that it's sad. I also have no idea what's it's like to have a bat flying around my house. I'd like to think I'd make the humane choice, but I'd probably freak out.

Bats are unwelcome as house guests, but I guess I'd try to coax it out before violence. They don't want to be close to you any more than you want to be close to them. Give them one path out of the house and they should go. Only 30 cases of bat-induced rabies in the whole US in the past 15 years. More info at the CDC here: http://www.cdc.gov/rabies.... In the midwest, small...

Bats here can carry lyssavirus. I think I'd prefer to shoo one out of the house before killing one, but that could be tricky if it's freaking out and hurting itself by banging into walls etc.

Yes, Cristo, and I know how you love watching me edit in real-time. Did you see that one? Huh? Huh?
- Tinfoil 2.0
Tell you what though, if it were a brown snake or similar, I'd be cutting that motherfucker in half. It might be just doing its thing, but part of its thing is deadly.
- Headless Gnad Kicker
I've been known to catch-and-release even large benign spiders, but violence is definitely on the menu for Dangerous lower-order critters. Any unwamted mammals I couldn't get out of the house though, I'd probably try to call animal control or an appropriate conservation org.

While I'd like to think I'd have the ability to be level-headed if a bat were in my bedroom in the middle of the night, I truly doubt I would be calm enough to think the situation through. I'd imagine my first thought would be to get rid of it, no matter how I had to do it. I tend to be "live and let live" with most creepy crawlies and flying things (I had a snake drop on my head once...

I also note, in my town, a call to animal control might get you someone in a month or so. There are a lot of places where they won't do anything for you and you are told to call an exterminator or someone who handles those sorts of things.

I'm happy I posted this. I've opened up a great discussion and sharing of links, opinions, etc. :)

It's been a few years since we've had any in the house, but we just turn the lights on, open the front door, and grab a broom and guide them out (like you would with a bird that accidentally flew in.) Unless it's actually trying to attack you, there's no point attacking it. Normally, they're just frightened and banging about trying to get back out. I've been more frightened by a bird that swooped into my face when I opened a stove.

when I was bitten by a bat, it took me over 5 hours to catch it. I finally caught it in a way that killed it. I in no way felt bad, i was terrified. it was in my bedroom, and it terrified me. and since it came in though a tiny gap, there was no way I was going to open something wide, and invite in its family. Definitionally, I have the right to remove it. not catching it would also have meant some additional significant unpleasantness for me.

I am sorry it upset you that this happened. but in the moment when you are confronting a bat? you act. it's primal. you simply DO.

Sorry about that. I didn't enjoy doing it. However, I really didn't have an effective way to get it out of the room otherwise. There's no one to call around here who will come quickly, let alone at night. I was worried that if I opened the window that one of the cats would leap out after it. Since it was the second floor and there was cement below, that wasn't happening. Having said...

I used to be gentle with wild animals regardless of danger. Now that I'm a mom (of both canine and human forms), they come first! I'll do my best attempt but if I feel my babies are threatened in the slightest bit, I will do what I must. Sorry mother nature!

We had a bat elude us for four days. It would buzz my head each morning. We were at our wits end. Fourth day the cats were fixated on the window. Husband started beating the corner with the broom. I stopped him so I could move our plant. IT WAS IN THE PLANT.

We got a net over the plant, I was hyperventilating since it was face level with me! He was released alive by accident.

I understand why Zulema would get upset to think about an animal being killed (she has a big heart), and I understand perfectly why Katy did what she had to do (she had to protect herself and her pets, and she made it clear it wasn't an easy decision for her). I don't see any contradiction. It's not pleasant to have wild animals in one's home, and there was no easy solution. It's just an upsetting situation is all. *hugs* to Katy and to Zu.

I'm using a ridiculously underpowered one at home (it was the free evaluation version Google handed out for beta testing) and I've really liked it for the most part. It has its quirks, but it does 90% of what I'd want it to do.

No, not that I know of - it is entirely browser-based. Most of the applications built for Chrome work just fine, and I've found thin replacements for those things if I've needed them, but I'm not using it for anything work/business related.

Chrome is like putting the Chrome browser in full screen mode. If you can do your thing using only Chrome apps, then you'll be fine. Otherwise, get a real OS on a real laptop.

Of course the way Adobe is going, their apps would be in the cloud right? Hrmm...
- Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart
I only use ChromeOS, at home and at work. For Photoshop like stuff, I use Pixlr.com. Adobe is definitely going to the cloud, and I admit I am not intimate with their cloud apps, but the writing is on the wall. Now that Spotify is in the cloud too, all I want is Fitbit syncing and Sonos support for Chrome.
- Louis Gray
As for Chrome at full screen, saying "real OS" on a "real laptop" is especially dismissive. Eric should know better.
- Louis Gray
Adobe apps are not in the cloud, and Chromebook won't run them. You only need to connect to the cli=oud once a month - maybe less - to verify your membership once you go the Creative Cloud route - which I will NOT do before the end of July, when my price would go up past $30/month, and I may stand pat with CS6.

Need some more damn paying work to make any of this happen . . .

Based on that article, building sites primarily on and for Chrome is looking less lazy and more smart. Still prolly mostly lazy.
