very nice to hear the news from Forrester...you keep raising the bar on us, Jeremiah!
- Zena Weist
Thank you for what you have contributed so far, I'm sure there is more to come. I look forward to watching and reading your next chapter! Good luck!
- David Cole
we don't even know what you are up to next but anxiously await the news because we know it will be good for all
- daniela barbosa
onwards and upwards. work out a gig that means you can spend more time at home, and less time washing your hands with steriliser!
- James
Good luck to you! And from a selfish point of view I hope your new gig allows for your insights to continue being published. I know I'm not the only one who's learned a lot from your writings.
- Matsis
Everyone will be waiting to hear what the next gig is and all will be following as usual. Your shoes will be hard to fill at Forrester but I know that they know they had quite a guy and will do what needs to be done. Best of Luck to a real professional social media guy!
- courtney benson
looking forward to your next move - Best of luck!
- Bill Sanders
Wishing you the best, Jeremiah! You've made a major contribution to the social media space. It will be exciting to see what you're up to next.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Best of luck Jeremiah! I hope we will continue to benefit from your insights in your next venture.

Kashif: Boulder has a higher percentage of educated people than any other city in USA, from what I was told last night.
- Robert Scoble
Kashif: Boulder is also very beautiful and geeks who come here for College don't want to leave. I totally grok that after walking around last night. Finally, there's a good community here that supports startups.
- Robert Scoble
ReTel is interesting. Takes security video from retail stores, slices that up, sends it to workers around the world, who then analyze that video for him. Helps catch employees stealing from businesses, etc.
- Robert Scoble
aah thanks Robert, Ive heard about the natural beauty of Boulder, but now that it has geek points I need to visit that place
- Kashif Khan
Boulder's been a tech hotbed for a while - I had dealings with Republic Telecom (they made a Voice-over-Frame Relay system) there in the 1990s. Make sure to get to the Gold Hill Inn (up a dirt road into the Front Range) while you're there.
- John Craft
Everlater is a cool way to record your travels around the world. I'll have to try it out. http://www.everlater.com/ It builds a nice story site from all the things you've put into social networks and Flickr.
- Robert Scoble
Salt Lake City is just as beautiful and has just as many, if not more startups. Boulder just gets the cred because they have one central source for all those startups.
- Jesse Stay
Now TimZon is on stage. http://www.timzon.com/ this lets you share visual feedback. Combines audio, video, whiteboard, and screen capture.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - any more thoughts about timzon?
- Tobin Truog
Tobin, nah, I have to use it to see what I think of it.
- Robert Scoble
Now on stage is "Next Big Sound" http://thenextbigsound.com/ measures the growth and popularity for bands across major web properties and sells actionable insights around that data to band managers.
- Robert Scoble
Wow, Next Big Sound is example of a trend: getting data out of social networks and presenting this in new ways so that people can make better business decisions.
- Robert Scoble
Is there something specific about "Next Big Sound" to apply it just to bands? Can it also track brands?
- Kevin Krewell
Kevin: I'll ask. The whole shtick and UI, though, is really focused around music analysis.
- Robert Scoble
you can't just view the iCal version of your Google Calendar as described here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us... ? that works fine for viewing your Google Calendar in Outlook. or are you saying Google Calendar Sync doesn't work with Outlook 2010?
- Karim
never mind. if you just want to view your Google Calendar in Outlook 2010 (1-way sync), the iCal version should work just fine. if you want 2-way sync (i.e. enter calendar items in Outlook and have them move to Google Calendar) then you probably want Google Calendar Sync, which, it turns out is hardcoded by Google to not work with Office 2010. http://www.markwilson.co.uk/blog...
- Karim
If @dahowlett wants to argue my (or his) credibility it will have to be here on friendfeed so we can do it in real time without pissing off our readers.
Credibility is to some extent gained through approval by others. Commercial approval is not the easiest kind to get. So to a certain extent I agree. However, having sponsorship for your blog does not make you uber-credible.
- Ian Holton
Ian: usually sponsorship happens because you have an audience, not because you are credible.
- Robert Scoble
"A Fool and his money are soon parted" and I have seen plenty of writers who have foolish rich friends. That does not make them more credible. You gain authority from your readers.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
But isn't an audience large enough to make you worthy of sponsorship not a sign that a certain minimum amount of people think you are credible (in what you are saying/doing)?
- Ian Holton
Why is fighting so important to you? And telling who's wrong? Exchange opinions, learn from eachother. Don't fight so much!
- erwin blom
agree with erwin. no idea why this has to be debated at all.
- geoff hines
I have to agree with Erwin. You always take "attacks" to a new personal level, Robert.
- Ian Holton
Zachary: they can come here and say why.
- Robert Scoble
That's true, he fired the first shot thats for sure, unprovocked too according to twitter history
- David Lloyd
i dont know how you replied to that so quickly, im not pissed off by you, go get em tiger...i was pissed off before
- Zachary Adam Cohen
An audience !(=>) [does not imply] credibility - even Michael Jackson will tell you this. However an audience does imply marketing ability which is what makes the $$$$s.
- Shaf
I'm passionate as well, and i'm a Scoble fan. But i don't think making things black and white so often gets us anywhere.
- erwin blom
erwin: black and white all the time doesn't work, but sometimes we must adopt this template of absolutes
- Zachary Adam Cohen
Erwin: I'm actually a lot more into the grays of life than you might know. But saying things clearly and definitively often gets a conversation going that I learn from.
- Robert Scoble
Exactly right Erwin, also I think that this is purely a stab at eachothers ego. Nothing more than that.
- Wim Mulder
Wim: yes, and I want to engage with Dennis. The fact that he isn't showing up here says volumes.
- Robert Scoble
Robert it doesn't say volumes - he's being sensible. I like what Dennis writes and tbh doing 'this' is a non brainer.
- Shaf
Mark: no debate. He just said that I wasn't credible. I called him out and asked him to come here and explain himself.
- Robert Scoble
Ken: it was schoolyard from the very beginning! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Me too - I'm out ... $15 wasted just like pay per view.
- Shaf
WAIT ! Robert can you ask your sponsor to refund me the $15 ? ;)
- Shaf
Shaf: heheh! That's what friendfeed needs: pay-for-participation rooms! That way Dennis and I could start a fight and get some money like professional boxers!
- Robert Scoble
Robert - Pay per tweet ;) Take care gentlemen - Goodnight
- Shaf
@scobleizer I enjoy all your posts and they seem very credible to me
- p_poarch
Dennis recommended a conversation via Skype video. How about using tinychat? You guys can debate the credibility issues and others can join in chat.
- Debi Jones
speaking on which. anyone know software that you can record video of two people?
- Tyler Gillies
Debi: no. friendfeed is perfectly fine for having a conversation.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: it's like Ken says. Why not choose neutral ground if the conversation is important? No one would enjoy having their credibility challenged, but not sure if the conversation environment is the point you want to engage.
- Debi Jones
Debi: neutral ground? Yeah, like calling me out on Twitter is neutral. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I do not want to have this argument in private or somewhere else. Thanks.
- Robert Scoble
stick to your guns robert...dont let the shift the debate onto where to debate or method in anyway, that is a distraction....
- Zachary Adam Cohen
I think that credibility means one thing to an accountant and something very different to a community of people fanatical about the internet. Dennis admits that his problem is that he can't wrap his head around what you do. Robert, your ability to embrace ambiguity is part of what makes you so good at what you do.
- Matthew Schrock
who is this guy? he has sent me msgs in the past too. seems like a bit of a troll.
- sean percival
I'd pay $15 to see you box Dennis. It wouldn't make either one of you more credible though. Of course, I don't always agree with you, but you always seem credible to me.
- RobinDotNet
He's tweeting that you guys are good friends, but you're pushing folks to FF when they don't want to do that. Can't people just not go to FF if they don't want to? Are you twisting anybody's arm?
- RobinDotNet
sean: he is a troll and RobinDotNet Dennis is a hypocrite. He pushes people to his web site all the time.
- Robert Scoble
interesting that he thinks you're friends; do you think you're friends?
- RobinDotNet
Every single day, and I mean EVERY day I get a follower or two like this http://twitter.com/MoneyMakers who link to posts on their blogs such as "How twitter can make you $2000 a month" and "Get 40000 followers in 30 days!". At least I don't get this crap on FF :D
- David Lloyd
RobinDotNet: no, I wouldn't call us friends. Especially after the way he's been acting online and he refuses to come over here and explain himself.
- Robert Scoble
Of course they are "social media experts" etc ;)
- David Lloyd
He doesn't seem like much of a friend. If I make an accusation, I'm either going to apologize or explain myself. It's a stand-up thing to do.
- RobinDotNet
Children... take a deep breath, walk outside and smell some goddam roses. Life is really too short for this kind of BS
- Ben Kepes
If you have to argue your credibility... well, there's everyones answer...
- Ian Wright
17. Hang out with your cats in an awkward social silence wishing you could share the moment with your followers
- Jay Cuthrell
from BuddyFeed
Adam, awesome, but they could totally do better - I want graphs with dates of when Twitter is down, places to discuss, things to do when it's down, etc.
- Jesse Stay
Actually Jessey, that site doesn't work anymore. http://istwitterdown.com takes you to an index of files. yes is one of them. I agree that a site dedicated to that would be fantastic!
- Adam Jackson
So much for that whole "support the situation in Iran" thing! Too bad FriendFeed is blocked by the sekrit polees as well!
- Stephen Foskett
a tip we just got: "You're TechCrunch. You probably already know. But just in case, Twitter is down right now. For the record, I'm just completing Step 7 of MG's 15 things to do while Twitter is down list."
- MG Siegler
wonder if twitter's down because iran is attacking?
- bbebop
No, Iran is attacking its people because twitter is down.
- JCunwired
Nope, a North Korean missile just hit Twitter HQ.
- Gabe Rivera
not sure if twitter is doing the scheduled maintenance right now...but, when you get sensational headlines like this http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009... , you're pretty much gonna go down with the ensuing traffic spike.
- mike
@bbebop - I was thinking the same thing. LOL. Just take out the data center air conditioners and the whole thing cascades into Fail Whale.
- Rob Sterling
Does anyone else think that Twitter will go down unintentionally soon after it is back up due to all the pent-up and back-logged tweets? Let's hope it does not, but I get a feeling from reading all the posts, comments both here on FF and elsewhere, that in couple of hours after it is back up, we will see a fail-whale.
- Dilip Dand
if i go to the username link while im signed into my account then it doesnt give me an option to change the group URL
- Jason Pollock
I think its best to choose something professional such as your name instead of something stupid, shame had to be less more then 5 characters otherwise I would of chosen my first name!
- Liam Daly
hey I got full name with a dot in the middle and it works without it as well, neat. :-)
- Project Glow Guy
Facebook is just telling me that I picked my URL because I did for my personal page but havent for my group
- Jason Pollock
shelisrael and 1938media were both available a few minutes ago
- Ken Sheppardson
Can you get two usernames or is it one and done???
- Mike
i still cant figure out how to now change my group URL link.. i have over 1000 members in there but the facebook.com/username link tells me i already changed my URL, which i did for my page but not my group page.... any thoughts anyone?
- Jason Pollock
Ben: You are right, it looks like Facebook gives you both FirstName.LastName and FirstNameLastName.
- Rolf Schewe
Jason: when you choose a FirstName.LastName or without a dot Facebook reserve the other for you.
- Vinko
Firstinitial.Lastname also resolves to FirstinitialLastname ...EDIT: in fact, it seems that you can insert arbitrary and multiple periods anywhere and it will resolve to your periodless name, much like a GMail address.
- Tinfoil 2.0
1601californiaave is still available
- Robert Scoble
OMG Allen! facebook is are losers! fuckers!
- Orli Yakuel
seriously u guys r so funny lmao, usernames r so fun to play around with and I took the advantage 2 input mine in the blank space: http://www.facebook.com/pkkha: its a personal one.
- polou/indigo_bow
Jason--after you select your username, you'll see the option to select a name for you pages.
- Kathy Fitch
Michael: I am just seeing if some fun names are available.
- Robert Scoble
Why did they suggest "."s if it was going to ignore them? Wouldn't it have made more sense not to allow "."s?
- Paul Lancaster
seriously--it's one environment that gets progressively less appealing as it develops.
- Kathy Fitch
Stephen: Facebook PR has saved that for me, but it'll take a while because I missed the deadline. I wanted to see if I could get "Robert."
- Robert Scoble
ooohhhh--love the book snowcrash. The robot doggie makes me cry every time.
- Kathy Fitch
facebook.com/asdfasdf redirected me back to home!
- Project Glow Guy
Robert - how are you checking this since you already secured your name? you must have a fake account for this!! LOL
- Susan Beebe
Kathy: "sighing" is still available.
- Robert Scoble
Yes, I fell for Facebook's massive publicity stunt and got sucked into watching the timer count down to zero so I could get /freddavis... same as I have here on FriendFeed, Twitter (if I ever get into my account again, sheesh!), Flickr, etc. ...and beat out the over 2,000 other Fred Davis's in the US... (sorry Redskins fans)...
- Fred Davis
ATX should get an exception to the five letter minimum rule
- Gary Etie
What's more valuable on a social media site than your OWN name when all you are doing is selling yourself?? Some silly name suggestions up there. Even for nerds...
- Dean Kakridas
top100 is not available. top1000 is.
- Robert Scoble
actually, my user names are worth more to me than my real name, Dean.
- Kathy Fitch
So is Facebook doing the "verified names" like Twitter?
- Jorge Escobar
I should have gotten "sidneycrosby" or "kobebryant" just to get a zillion hits over the next few days.
- Kevin Mohr
I agree, kathy. I went right for dthree, not my real name
- dthree
StephenPickering wasn't hard but there is a guy in Australia who's going to be pissed at me
- Stephen Pickering
Matthew: I registered "Scoble" for my son at 9 p.m. So that's the answer. I already had RobertScoble saved by PR. But I probably would rather have "Scoble."
- Robert Scoble
This is something that frustrates me. How do I access my fan page from within my account? I don't see anywhere to do it. (I have 2 fans heheeheheh)
- Stephen Pickering
Thanks Kathy, would love to have you as a "fan" but I don't even know how to direct you to the page! hehehehheheheheh
- Stephen Pickering
Hmm... I get the screen "The page you requested was not found."
- Jorge Escobar
Robert: Damn i only have guessing urls to go off after securing my name.
- Project Glow Guy
could it be that the small caps twitter and not the big caps Twitter is available?
- polou/indigo_bow
toptwitterer is still available. So is topgeek. Jorge, remember that I'm using the tool where you can register them. That's the only way to really check.
- Robert Scoble
Beware, just because it says "Page not found", doesn't mean it is available. There is a big restricted list somewhere, and I found one (a city name).
- Paul Holmes
Paul: funny, "restricted" is still available.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble, what 's the record for # of comments on friend feed - are you going for the record? BTW - I love friend feed.
- Robert Freeze
halfmoonbay looks like it might be available
- Gary Etie
facebook.com/fail appears to be available, as well.
- Paul Holmes
Robert Freeze, I don't think record threads are created, I think they happen. Lots of people try to get one going, whereas Scoble just has the dynamics going at this point in time, and I think he'd agree.
- Gary Etie
I got my name! Go ME! I don't care if anybody likes facebook or not but I really think it's important to have your own name so no one else uses it.
- Sheryl
Sheryl: Especially when its common :-P Take that 500+ other me's on facebook.
- Project Glow Guy
Facebook will be busy looking with trademarks infringements this coming few weeks!
- polou/indigo_bow
@polou - I know, it's still kind of funny
- Paul Holmes
I tried 2 put a submission 2 my biz name, but the biz number reg was not defined clearly. We have IDs with names and since laws are different in Canada and elsewhere then US.
- polou/indigo_bow
Ben: Agreed. Mine isn't as common but I tried for my first name and it was gone. Good thing I use my full name everywhere. Continuity. :)
- Sheryl
How hard could it have been to prevent creation of trademarked names, without verification from the trademark holder? Easier than it's going to be to straighten out the mess. It's got to be part of the planned hype, with built-in controversy, and ongoing coverage.
- Gary Etie
I'm Zuckerberg, and I'm thinking, how do I force a relationship between celebrities and businesses and FB? Let the world register their trademarked names! Yea, that's the ticket!
- Gary Etie
facebook.com/scobeleizer and facebook.com/scobelizer are still available
- Paul Holmes
The following are taken: pagenotfound, 404error
- Project Glow Guy
odd those pagesnotfound and 404eror r taken wonder 4 what the reason?
- polou/indigo_bow
The notorious "dot" issue - no need to worry if you are facebook.com/PaulHolmes or facebook.com/Paul.Holmes, or facebook.com/P.a.u.l.H.o.l.m.e.s. - it all goes to the same page.
- Paul Holmes
Paul: Seems dashes work the same way. ben-cooper = ben.cooper = bencooper.
- Project Glow Guy
So, it has been established, both "."s and "-"s (dots and dashes?) are ignored at Facebook. At Gmail, ".", dots are ignored, "-", dashes are not. At both FB and Gmail, g.a.r.y.e.t.i.e = garyetie = gary.etie. but ≠ g-a-r-y-e-t-i-e, or gary-etie, for Gmail.
- Gary Etie
I just decided to continue in my 12 year old mistake and take iphigenie again.
- Iphigenie
It would be getting harder to register firstname.lastname by now (Unless you have a more unique name). After the main one is taken you get reverse name taken lastname.firstname then they start spilling out to using initials which multiplies the amount of people that could also use it. All variations seem to be taken for my name now.
- Project Glow Guy
ender and enderwiggin are both taken
- Jeremy Toeman
seems like all LOTR, harry potter, and star wars names are gone... guess i'll just go with my own name, though i'm in no rush, since nobody else seems to have it. :)
- Jeremy Toeman
Think I have struck gold - Apple, Mac, Iphone, Ipod is avaiable
- Asgeir
You think getting a clever name is funny now, but it's like a bad tattoo,in a few years, the fun will have worn off
- Jeremiah Owyang
I'll bet it'll be more like days, Jeremiah.
- Ken Sheppardson
MyClass.SQLCommand := "SELECT * FROM SocialMedia.FaceBook WHERE Free=true" .. uh.. or the like ;) Damn ObjectPascal & SQL GUIs!
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
oooh! gefiltefish is available... tempting
- Jeremy Toeman
I have secured my regular pseudonym zigojacko (http://facebook.com/zigojacko) although I'm looking forward to when they release usernames for Facebook pages :)
- Geoff Jackson
One thing I have noticed is that in any ovie, v show, etc where anything odd happens, the English are always portrayed as standing in place saying something like "This can't be happening" or some stupid thing like that, when it clearly IS happening. Is this some sort of national trait? I like to think that if, say, the dead rise and turn on the living, I would fight back + run to safety FIRST and worry about the ontological implications after.
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Here Neal, you dropped an "m" and a "t" :)
- Richard Walker
well, it's almost a month later but anyway in Canada the top three are currently Sims 3, StoneLoops and StickWars
- Richard Akerman
My cousin dl'ed the Moron Test and tried to get me to take it. I told him he'd already failed because he was a moron for buying it in the first place. He was unamused. I wasn't.
- Hookuh Tinypants
To be fair, he's kind of a tool, so it's less a reflection of the app and more a reflection of how much I want to throw him off the nearest high-rise.
- Hookuh Tinypants
I notice that the U.S. is no longer a nation of morons -- for the last few days, "The Sims 3" is #1, so we're now a nation of replicants.
- Stephen Mack
got this after my first intelligent use of ff filtered search. populist USA likes to feign ignorance and UK likes to superficial awareness
- Lane Rapp
Louis - I've been a slacker this week posting to my own blogs and have been meaning to do a unique post on this. The Beta made it much more obvious. The RC is trying to be a little less confusing. Here's just a few asst ... By all means, the Media Player. Techie stuff: From Start -> accessories -> Resource Monitor (New GUI is nice). Keep this brief ... Go the the control panel and click...
- Charlie Anzman
Robert, I try to do the same, assuming they are here, but FriendFeed is not yet the superset. I also tend to share them in Google Reader when possible.
- Louis Gray
Plus sometimes you strike up conversations with the bloggers, freely sharing ideas and explaining. That impressed me way back when...
- MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
That's a fantastic idea. Think I'll start doing it.
- Paul Balcerak
Yes, Mary. It always makes sense to make comments and engage with those discussing your content, if you have the time.
- Louis Gray
Great idea Louis. You have become my social media constant, I have to hang on to you so I don't get LOST.
- Matthew
new strategy: link to louis in every single blog post... muwahahahaha
- andy brudtkuhl
I used to do this a lot but then he got me all caught up in this 'new adopter' stuff and I couldn't get anything done (Louis rocks :)
- Charlie Anzman
those that link to vertical slice I tend to thank, I'll even come to them and offer to involve them in the show production at times by offering to involve their articles or creations. Sadly there's only one guy that does post some episodes to his blog that I'm aware of.
- alphaxion
Louis, what discovery tool do you use to find those linking to you? Google Alerts?
- Rick Bucich
PS - that question goes out to everyone else as well. I love the idea and use it to a degree but never in a systemic way. Do you think http://delicious.com is the ideal platform?
- Rick Bucich
I got really excited when I noticed a link from louismg in delicious. I wondered why, as I don't write about anything social networking related. When I figured it out I started doing the same thing: _both_ sites which linked to me have some shiny delicious.com love from me. Heh.
- DGentry
i make cupcakes for each link and mail them to each person
- Allen Stern
I so never got my cupcakes! Maybe you should email 'em Allen ;-)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'll link to them if I really like their blog, otherwise I stumble a post
- Kate
Yeah your tags are ... how do you say... scattered :(
- Bwana ☠
aye, looks like you struck into the problem I did - you can't have multiple word tags unless you take out the space and bunch it into a single word. Not even quotes works
- alphaxion
Great strategy Louis, I am going to start doing a similar thing at http://delicious.com/garinki... only I am going to tag the Blog with whatever category it belongs to instead of "coverage"
- Garin Kilpatrick
Sounds like a plan to me! Will start implementing today!
- Mike Paul
So that's why one of my posts got a tweet from Louis Gray! That puzzled me a lot. Only now that I remember that I've linked to Louis in that post. Sweet! Nice touch. ",)
- jan geronimo
Lawton: I have accounts with SU and delicious but recommend using delicious because I find it more efficient, especially when used with the Firefox plugin.
- Garin Kilpatrick
Revisiting this old thread because it's so useful.
- Rick Bucich
Well they spelled my name wrong on the link danmerrill but the rest of this is pretty much so what I write about. Depending on where they get it. This is not an authorized copy of what I write about, or where I write it. Linking for posterity --- I am worth being ripped off, awesome.
- Dan owns Comicsforge.com
Maybe other folks get non-spam mails with that subject?
- Yuvi
I gave up on Gmail years ago for precisely this reason. They pass on mail that only the insane or dead would think wasn't spam. I believe that most spam should be caught at the server and never seen by the end-user. A spam folder with 1,000 messages in it shows, to me, gross incompetence on the admin's part.
- Akiva
DEFINITELY pursue Yuvi... this is worth a LOOK! I must say having a College degree is important, but sometimes you have to find other ways to get to your goals. You can get a degree later too. Strike while the iron is hot!
- Susan Beebe
My experience coming out of University after four years was that I was four years behind the guys who just went and did the job straight from school. I think only now, ten years later am I getting the benefit of my degree. It not what you learn at university....it's *that* you learn.
- Chris Nixon
