Techstars is just getting started in Boulder, Colorado. We are about to see the birth of 10 new companies. More here:
Power to the Thursday morning Techstars. Can't wait to learn more. - Holly Rae
You can search for "Techstars" and see the live chatter. - Robert Scoble
Colorado is an amazing hotbed for startups - Zoli Erdos
View from uptop: RT @jedwhite David Cohen with a full house up on stage at #techstars http://brightkite.com/objects... - Yann Ropars
Why exactly is it a hotbed Zoli ? - Kashif Khan
Yann: I'm in the front row. ReTel is up first. They help stores and restaurants optimize their operations. http://www.reteltechnologies.com/ - Robert Scoble
Kashif: Boulder has a higher percentage of educated people than any other city in USA, from what I was told last night. - Robert Scoble
Kashif: Boulder is also very beautiful and geeks who come here for College don't want to leave. I totally grok that after walking around last night. Finally, there's a good community here that supports startups. - Robert Scoble
the mentor crew is impressive, me thinks.... looking at http://www.techstars.org/ - Holly Rae
ReTel is interesting. Takes security video from retail stores, slices that up, sends it to workers around the world, who then analyze that video for him. Helps catch employees stealing from businesses, etc. - Robert Scoble
aah thanks Robert, Ive heard about the natural beauty of Boulder, but now that it has geek points I need to visit that place - Kashif Khan
Do they have Ustream.tv anywhere? anyone knows? #techstars - Yann Ropars
Boulder's been a tech hotbed for a while - I had dealings with Republic Telecom (they made a Voice-over-Frame Relay system) there in the 1990s. Make sure to get to the Gold Hill Inn (up a dirt road into the Front Range) while you're there. - John Craft
Everlater is a cool way to record your travels around the world. I'll have to try it out. http://www.everlater.com/ It builds a nice story site from all the things you've put into social networks and Flickr. - Robert Scoble
Check out a page that the Everlater team built for Fred Wilson, very nice: http://www.everlater.com/fredwil... - Robert Scoble
Salt Lake City is just as beautiful and has just as many, if not more startups. Boulder just gets the cred because they have one central source for all those startups. - Jesse Stay
Now TimZon is on stage. http://www.timzon.com/ this lets you share visual feedback. Combines audio, video, whiteboard, and screen capture. - Robert Scoble
Interesting about TimZon...I might be able to use it in my web design business. E-mail feedback is remarkably inefficient. - Sam Guzman
Now on stage is Take Comics http://www.takepublishing.com/ which is trying to bring high quality comics to both mobile and web. - Robert Scoble
Robert - any more thoughts about timzon? - Tobin Truog
Tobin, nah, I have to use it to see what I think of it. - Robert Scoble
Now on stage is "Next Big Sound" http://thenextbigsound.com/ measures the growth and popularity for bands across major web properties and sells actionable insights around that data to band managers. - Robert Scoble
Wow, Next Big Sound is example of a trend: getting data out of social networks and presenting this in new ways so that people can make better business decisions. - Robert Scoble
Is there something specific about "Next Big Sound" to apply it just to bands? Can it also track brands? - Kevin Krewell
Kevin: I'll ask. The whole shtick and UI, though, is really focused around music analysis. - Robert Scoble
is there a ustream for this stuff? - Darren Stuart
Thanks. - Kevin Krewell
they are doing awesome stuff - andy brudtkuhl
Vanilla rocked. Cool new forums. - Robert Scoble
SendGrid is on stage right now, they are improving email for email marketers. - Robert Scoble
Spry gives you insights to software projects. - Robert Scoble
Thanks for documenting this, fun to see you, have a great time in town! - Andrew Hyde

I'm uninstalling Outlook 2010. Why? I need it to sync with Google Calendar and that doesn't work in new version.
you can't just view the iCal version of your Google Calendar as described here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us... ? that works fine for viewing your Google Calendar in Outlook. or are you saying Google Calendar Sync doesn't work with Outlook 2010? - Karim
never mind. if you just want to view your Google Calendar in Outlook 2010 (1-way sync), the iCal version should work just fine. if you want 2-way sync (i.e. enter calendar items in Outlook and have them move to Google Calendar) then you probably want Google Calendar Sync, which, it turns out is hardcoded by Google to not work with Office 2010. http://www.markwilson.co.uk/blog... - Karim
Karim: right, I need two-way sync. - Robert Scoble
I gave up on Outlook and use a mix of Thunderbird and Google Apps. - Chris Abraham
I cut Outlook out of my life months ago. There are some downsides....but not as many as the upsides, IMHO. - Curt Mercadante
Google can do 2-way Exchange syncing for contacts and calendar: It's how I sync my iPhone: http://m.google.com/sync - Richard Hodgson

If @dahowlett wants to argue my (or his) credibility it will have to be here on friendfeed so we can do it in real time without pissing off our readers.
He says he's credible because he has a sponsor who pays him. Hey, I do too. http://www.building43.com is paid for by Rackspace. - Robert Scoble
So what about it Dennis? He's here: http://twitter.com/dahowlett - Robert Scoble
Money and/or sponsorship does not make one credible. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob: exactly right. And I'm not going to do a Skype interview with him. I will only fight him here on friendfeed. - Robert Scoble
im credible and i don't have money OR sponsorship ;) - Tyler Gillies
Dennis says that he's willing to take me on, but so far has been chicken. He already has a friendfeed account here: http://friendfeed.com/dahowle... - Robert Scoble
Credibility is to some extent gained through approval by others. Commercial approval is not the easiest kind to get. So to a certain extent I agree. However, having sponsorship for your blog does not make you uber-credible. - Ian Holton
Ian: usually sponsorship happens because you have an audience, not because you are credible. - Robert Scoble
"A Fool and his money are soon parted" and I have seen plenty of writers who have foolish rich friends. That does not make them more credible. You gain authority from your readers. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
But isn't an audience large enough to make you worthy of sponsorship not a sign that a certain minimum amount of people think you are credible (in what you are saying/doing)? - Ian Holton
Why is fighting so important to you? And telling who's wrong? Exchange opinions, learn from eachother. Don't fight so much! - erwin blom
agree with erwin. no idea why this has to be debated at all. - geoff hines
I have to agree with Erwin. You always take "attacks" to a new personal level, Robert. - Ian Holton
I have no sponsorship, my credibility is based on my reason, judgement, and writing. I had been under the impression that sponsorship implied something else (Robert said it, audience/reach) - Mark Essel
I'll get you at recess! - BryanSchuetz
Credibility doesn't share a corollary relationship with volume or ferocity. They're unrelated. - Ken Camp
What started this fight? - David Lloyd
Erwin: I'm passionate and some things are worth fighting out. - Robert Scoble
And anyway I didn't pick this fight. Dennis did. - Robert Scoble
what about the readers who are already pissed off? - Zachary Adam Cohen
Zachary: they can come here and say why. - Robert Scoble
That's true, he fired the first shot thats for sure, unprovocked too according to twitter history - David Lloyd
i dont know how you replied to that so quickly, im not pissed off by you, go get em tiger...i was pissed off before - Zachary Adam Cohen
An audience !(=>) [does not imply] credibility - even Michael Jackson will tell you this. However an audience does imply marketing ability which is what makes the $$$$s. - Shaf
I'm passionate as well, and i'm a Scoble fan. But i don't think making things black and white so often gets us anywhere. - erwin blom
Zachary: friendfeed is real time. - Robert Scoble
Hope it's a good argument (one you can mutually learn from). I had one today with a good friend about an absolute reference frame/guiding laws of nature vs. local relative patterns. - Mark Essel
erwin: black and white all the time doesn't work, but sometimes we must adopt this template of absolutes - Zachary Adam Cohen
Erwin: I'm actually a lot more into the grays of life than you might know. But saying things clearly and definitively often gets a conversation going that I learn from. - Robert Scoble
Robert - You'd me more credible and accurate if you said FriendFeed is "very near realtime". I'd concur with that. - Ken Camp
Exactly right Erwin, also I think that this is purely a stab at eachothers ego. Nothing more than that. - Wim Mulder
Wim: yes, and I want to engage with Dennis. The fact that he isn't showing up here says volumes. - Robert Scoble
I just had the pleasure of 3hours of rational debate, discussion and arguments today. Reductio ad absurdum is an effective tactic one friend often uses, which generates polarized comparisons. I try to balance the debate into "regions of stability". We're rarely at the extreme boundaries we often use in our discussions. - Mark Essel
what was the debate? representing a fair point of view on a sponsor's product? That could be interesting :D - Mark Essel
I'm not sure the fact him not showing here says volumes other than to say if you look at his history he doesn't use FF for anything but a feed dump. That's what I see when I look at his profile. I would never expect to see him engage here over this. I think you know that too Robert. Go for neutral ground, but you calling him into your turf isn't something he's going to go for, and that... more... - Ken Camp
Robert it doesn't say volumes - he's being sensible. I like what Dennis writes and tbh doing 'this' is a non brainer. - Shaf
Mark: no debate. He just said that I wasn't credible. I called him out and asked him to come here and explain himself. - Robert Scoble
Ok, this whole issue just took a turn into schoolyard for me. I'm off this thread. Lost all interest. - Ken Camp
Ken: it was schoolyard from the very beginning! :-) - Robert Scoble
Me too - I'm out ... $15 wasted just like pay per view. - Shaf
WAIT ! Robert can you ask your sponsor to refund me the $15 ? ;) - Shaf
Shaf: heheh! That's what friendfeed needs: pay-for-participation rooms! That way Dennis and I could start a fight and get some money like professional boxers! - Robert Scoble
I was hoping for some good debate, my xbox360 just got 3 red rings and after some powering on and off , and looking up the problem it'll cost me $99 to fix. Somehow I thought this was covered (its 4 years old). I sent an @Microsoft_Xbox asking about it - Mark Essel
Robert - Pay per tweet ;) Take care gentlemen - Goodnight - Shaf
@scobleizer I enjoy all your posts and they seem very credible to me - p_poarch
Dennis recommended a conversation via Skype video. How about using tinychat? You guys can debate the credibility issues and others can join in chat. - Debi Jones
speaking on which. anyone know software that you can record video of two people? - Tyler Gillies
Debi: no. friendfeed is perfectly fine for having a conversation. - Robert Scoble
Robert: it's like Ken says. Why not choose neutral ground if the conversation is important? No one would enjoy having their credibility challenged, but not sure if the conversation environment is the point you want to engage. - Debi Jones
Debi: neutral ground? Yeah, like calling me out on Twitter is neutral. :-) - Robert Scoble
I do not want to have this argument in private or somewhere else. Thanks. - Robert Scoble
stick to your guns robert...dont let the shift the debate onto where to debate or method in anyway, that is a distraction.... - Zachary Adam Cohen
I think that credibility means one thing to an accountant and something very different to a community of people fanatical about the internet. Dennis admits that his problem is that he can't wrap his head around what you do. Robert, your ability to embrace ambiguity is part of what makes you so good at what you do. - Matthew Schrock
who is this guy? he has sent me msgs in the past too. seems like a bit of a troll. - sean percival
I'd pay $15 to see you box Dennis. It wouldn't make either one of you more credible though. Of course, I don't always agree with you, but you always seem credible to me. - RobinDotNet
He's tweeting that you guys are good friends, but you're pushing folks to FF when they don't want to do that. Can't people just not go to FF if they don't want to? Are you twisting anybody's arm? - RobinDotNet
sean: he is a troll and RobinDotNet Dennis is a hypocrite. He pushes people to his web site all the time. - Robert Scoble
interesting that he thinks you're friends; do you think you're friends? - RobinDotNet
Every single day, and I mean EVERY day I get a follower or two like this http://twitter.com/MoneyMakers who link to posts on their blogs such as "How twitter can make you $2000 a month" and "Get 40000 followers in 30 days!". At least I don't get this crap on FF :D - David Lloyd
RobinDotNet: no, I wouldn't call us friends. Especially after the way he's been acting online and he refuses to come over here and explain himself. - Robert Scoble
Of course they are "social media experts" etc ;) - David Lloyd
He doesn't seem like much of a friend. If I make an accusation, I'm either going to apologize or explain myself. It's a stand-up thing to do. - RobinDotNet
Children... take a deep breath, walk outside and smell some goddam roses. Life is really too short for this kind of BS - Ben Kepes
If you have to argue your credibility... well, there's everyones answer... - Ian Wright

Twitter Is Down: 15 Alternative Things To Do
required reading once again - MG Siegler from Bookmarklet
I'm surprised no one has created a site yet that tracks Twitter outages and builds community around that. :-) - Jesse Stay
It's a TweetDownTwitastrophe! Everyone hold your tweets! - joebrooks
It's called Friendfeed, Jesse. :) - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
"When Twitter is down, it's even harder to explain to people" :D - Jérôme Flipo
17. Hang out with your cats in an awkward social silence wishing you could share the moment with your followers - Jay Cuthrell from BuddyFeed
Adam, awesome, but they could totally do better - I want graphs with dates of when Twitter is down, places to discuss, things to do when it's down, etc. - Jesse Stay
Actually Jessey, that site doesn't work anymore. http://istwitterdown.com takes you to an index of files. yes is one of them. I agree that a site dedicated to that would be fantastic! - Adam Jackson
So much for that whole "support the situation in Iran" thing! Too bad FriendFeed is blocked by the sekrit polees as well! - Stephen Foskett
a tip we just got: "You're TechCrunch. You probably already know. But just in case, Twitter is down right now. For the record, I'm just completing Step 7 of MG's 15 things to do while Twitter is down list." - MG Siegler
wonder if twitter's down because iran is attacking? - bbebop
No, Iran is attacking its people because twitter is down. - jcunwired
Nope, a North Korean missile just hit Twitter HQ. - Gabe Rivera
not sure if twitter is doing the scheduled maintenance right now...but, when you get sensational headlines like this http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009... , you're pretty much gonna go down with the ensuing traffic spike. - mike
@bbebop - I was thinking the same thing. LOL. Just take out the data center air conditioners and the whole thing cascades into Fail Whale. - Rob Sterling
I shaved and do look fantastic now. Kind of. :-) - Zalt Woo
Does anyone else think that Twitter will go down unintentionally soon after it is back up due to all the pent-up and back-logged tweets? Let's hope it does not, but I get a feeling from reading all the posts, comments both here on FF and elsewhere, that in couple of hours after it is back up, we will see a fail-whale. - Dilip Dand

How hard could it have been to prevent creation of trademarked names, without verification from the trademark holder? Easier than it's going to be to straighten out the mess. It's got to be part of the planned hype, with built-in controversy, and ongoing coverage. - Gary Etie

One thing I have noticed is that in any ovie, v show, etc where anything odd happens, the English are always portrayed as standing in place saying something like "This can't be happening" or some stupid thing like that, when it clearly IS happening. Is this some sort of national trait? I like to think that if, say, the dead rise and turn on the living, I would fight back + run to safety FIRST and worry about the ontological implications after. - Neal Jansons

Louis - I've been a slacker this week posting to my own blogs and have been meaning to do a unique post on this. The Beta made it much more obvious. The RC is trying to be a little less confusing. Here's just a few asst ... By all means, the Media Player. Techie stuff: From Start -> accessories -> Resource Monitor (New GUI is nice). Keep this brief ... Go the the control panel and click... more... - Charlie Anzman

How are you rewarding those people who link to your blog? Here's what I do:
Since the beginning of 2008, I have been bookmarking links to my blog on Delicious, tagged "coverage" - Louis Gray
You can see the thousands of links here: http://delicious.com/louismg... - Louis Gray
I add secondary tags for the subject, like "blogging", "friendfeed", "twitter", etc. - Louis Gray
The delicious bookmarks get shown on FriendFeed. - Louis Gray
Good idea - Bwana ☠
Now, I set up my settings so that every delicious bookmark I make goes to Twitter via FriendFeed. - Louis Gray
So if you are linking to me, not only will everyone here see it, but everyone on Twitter will see it. Guaranteed exposure. - Louis Gray
And in theory, it gives more exposure back to me by making it look like my blog has a higher rate of visibility. - Louis Gray
Love it Louis. I rt those who have linked to me: http://twitter.com/brianso... - Brian Solis
Very good idea..my delicious bookmarks all go to Facebook as well. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Great idea! - Craig Huffstetler
I like them in friendfeed. - Robert Scoble
briliant, thanks for sharing - anna sauce
Robert, I try to do the same, assuming they are here, but FriendFeed is not yet the superset. I also tend to share them in Google Reader when possible. - Louis Gray
Hmm Must add Friendfeed to my blog - Lindy Asimus
And we know the power of a Scoble "Like!" - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Plus sometimes you strike up conversations with the bloggers, freely sharing ideas and explaining. That impressed me way back when... - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
That's a fantastic idea. Think I'll start doing it. - Paul Balcerak
Yes, Mary. It always makes sense to make comments and engage with those discussing your content, if you have the time. - Louis Gray
Nice. Encourage people to link to you by linking to them in return. Not a new concept but definitely an innovative way of doing it. - Mark Bockenstedt
Great idea Louis. You have become my social media constant, I have to hang on to you so I don't get LOST. - Matthew
new strategy: link to louis in every single blog post... muwahahahaha - andy brudtkuhl
I used to do this a lot but then he got me all caught up in this 'new adopter' stuff and I couldn't get anything done (Louis rocks :) - Charlie Anzman
I got the idea from Louis awhile back, but here's mine: http://del.icio.us/jessest... and for socialtoo: http://del.icio.us/jessest... - Jesse Stay
those that link to vertical slice I tend to thank, I'll even come to them and offer to involve them in the show production at times by offering to involve their articles or creations. Sadly there's only one guy that does post some episodes to his blog that I'm aware of. - alphaxion
Louis, what discovery tool do you use to find those linking to you? Google Alerts? - Rick Bucich
We reward those who give our comic what we call a "Mighty Link", with a nice link back under the comic... http://www.geekculture.com/joyofte... - Snaggy
PS - that question goes out to everyone else as well. I love the idea and use it to a degree but never in a systemic way. Do you think http://delicious.com is the ideal platform? - Rick Bucich
Mike Fruchter started the same: http://delicious.com/mfrucht... - Louis Gray
@Rick i prefer diigo... it allows you to build communities around the links - andy brudtkuhl
Rick, Google Alerts are okay (not perfect). Technorati actually still does a better job. - Louis Gray
Dang, I didn't even think of doing that, ok - off to go link love people. thanks! - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
But, i used to do the same thing back when i was a delicious user - http://delicious.com/48web... - andy brudtkuhl

Does Technorati work for websites not on a blog platform? We have both - Rick Bucich
Andy -- for example, should I bookmark this one? http://billolearysblog.blogspot.com/2009... Knowing that it will get redistributed, I'm less likely to. But I may comment there instead. - Louis Gray
I'm going to do the same - Was thinking linking tweets as well, but then that would be too much... - Bwana ☠
I love this! Way to rally the community! - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
A most valuable conversation thread indeed! - tony obregon

Great Idea! Luis, how do you know who is linking to your Blog? I just linked to you ( http://bit.ly/4webways ) - frank barry
I got really excited when I noticed a link from louismg in delicious. I wondered why, as I don't write about anything social networking related. When I figured it out I started doing the same thing: _both_ sites which linked to me have some shiny delicious.com love from me. Heh. - DGentry
i make cupcakes for each link and mail them to each person - Allen Stern
I so never got my cupcakes! Maybe you should email 'em Allen ;-) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)

I delicious people who write about FriendBinder: http://delicious.com/rythie... sometimes I Twitter about them too or Digg them. - Richard Cunningham
joined in with this idea too http://friendfeed.com/alphaxi... - alphaxion
now if only i had my delicious bookmarks all organized like that. - Alfredo
It's not too late Alfredo :D (or is it) - Bwana ☠
Yeah your tags are ... how do you say... scattered :( - Bwana ☠
aye, looks like you struck into the problem I did - you can't have multiple word tags unless you take out the space and bunch it into a single word. Not even quotes works - alphaxion
Great strategy Louis, I am going to start doing a similar thing at http://delicious.com/garinki... only I am going to tag the Blog with whatever category it belongs to instead of "coverage" - Garin Kilpatrick
Sounds like a plan to me! Will start implementing today! - Mike Paul
So that's why one of my posts got a tweet from Louis Gray! That puzzled me a lot. Only now that I remember that I've linked to Louis in that post. Sweet! Nice touch. ",) - jan geronimo
I stream my ego feed on Twitter - Beth Kanter
I do something similar. When I notice incoming links, I share them in Google Reader. This ends up on Friendfeed, of course, and gets shared with the few folks who follow my GR. I have a sidebar feature on my personal blog set to pick up the gReader bookmarks and parse them as HTML, which Google indexes. Finally, I pipe my gReader shares to Twitter via Twitterfeed. - Chris Baskind
Help! What about posting to SU vs. Delicious? i don't want to submit 2 things to my feed....ideas? should i just use delicious? - Lawton Chiles
Lawton: I have accounts with SU and delicious but recommend using delicious because I find it more efficient, especially when used with the Firefox plugin. - Garin Kilpatrick

Well they spelled my name wrong on the link danmerrill but the rest of this is pretty much so what I write about. Depending on where they get it. This is not an authorized copy of what I write about, or where I write it. Linking for posterity --- I am worth being ripped off, awesome. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag

@Sun should not push Yahoo Toolbar through @JAVA update down users throat - should make it opt-in instead of opt-out
Sun - stop pushing the software. let us opt-in if we want something, we will get it. - Vic Podcaster

Dunno, just got a bit of mail with subject "I want to have your babies" that got through GMail's SPAM filter. What is GMail thinking?
They're thinking that you want someone to have your babies? - David Worrell
Ask them how much they will pay you! lol - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Maybe other folks get non-spam mails with that subject? - Yuvi
I gave up on Gmail years ago for precisely this reason. They pass on mail that only the insane or dead would think wasn't spam. I believe that most spam should be caught at the server and never seen by the end-user. A spam folder with 1,000 messages in it shows, to me, gross incompetence on the admin's part. - Akiva Moskovitz

DEFINITELY pursue Yuvi... this is worth a LOOK! I must say having a College degree is important, but sometimes you have to find other ways to get to your goals. You can get a degree later too. Strike while the iron is hot! - Susan Beebe
My experience coming out of University after four years was that I was four years behind the guys who just went and did the job straight from school. I think only now, ten years later am I getting the benefit of my degree. It not what you learn at university....it's *that* you learn. - Chris Nixon
