"Researchers were conducting a study comparing the views of men in their 20s who had never been exposed to pornography with regular users. But their project stumbled at the first hurdle when they failed to find a single man who had not been seen it. “We started our research seeking men in their 20s who had never consumed pornography,” said Professor Simon Louis Lajeunesse. “We couldn't find any.” Although hampered in its original aim, the study did examined the habits of those young men who used pornography – which would appear to be all of them."
- RAPatton
"Single men watched pornography for an average of 40 minutes, three times a week, while those in relationships watched it 1.7 times a week for around 20 minutes. The study found that men watched pornography that matched their own image of sexuality, and quickly discarded material they found offensive or distasteful. Prof Lajeunesse said pornography did not have a negative effect on...

I was going to say something similar, Sarah. Try the Amish, or maybe some Hasidic Jews?

The Amish just keep it in the community, usually via sexual molestation of underage females, because they'll be treated harshly if they speak out. http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Headline is a bit misleading. This was an attempt to study 20 men, which were to be divided in two groups, porn-watchers and non-porn-watchers, and they simply couldn't find any to fit in the second group. Doesn't sound like they surveyed thousands of men.
- Louis Simoneau
"All men watch porn." ...although we only studied men in their 20s, we'll go ahead and assume that they represent men of all ages. Good call.
- Fleagle
yeah, no to both, IMO. lists like this just skew the field, IMO. it's not friendly, but i say "once you join up, you're on your own." if someone wants to "host" a list of suggested users, that's cool.
- MikeAmundsen
I think providing such a list is highly productive. Especially for new users who may be intimidated by social media.
- Benin Brown
I'd like to see example posts, rather than users -- pick the ones you "like," and a list of the posters (and people who liked the post) could be generated as a quick-start. Heck, that's how I find people half of the time by hand.
- Jennifer Dittrich
No, if they don't tell what they're *interested in*. Popular is such a dumb idea, seriously. aside, this is exactly why I humbly created SocialWhois: http://socialwhois.com
- directeur
Jennifer, that's an interesting idea.
- Kol Tregaskes
directeur, so the list(s) should be based on the users selected interests? Yep, I like that too. Then we need to improve the group and/or group search: http://ff.im/5avWj
- Kol Tregaskes
How about they are directed to a search form and asked to type in a keyword representing their interest. Immediately they'll be shown posts on that topic as well as people who are posting about that topic - and they can subscribe, comment, etc from there.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Kol, exactly! Recommending someone should be based on what he's interested in. You won't recommend me "Britney Spears" knowing that I'm a jazz lover, would you? :) LPH: http://www.socialwhois.com/tag... :)
- directeur
I wouldn't recommend you Britney Spears ever. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes, Kol, I meant "no" to both. I think it's much more important to provide new users with a screencast or a set of pages with screenshots that suggest how to get started. Suggested groups or users skews everything, as Mike put it. *Show* people how to find groups and users, but don't *tell* them which ones to find.
- Laura Norvig
I'll disagree with most and say yes: They should be recommended the Friendfeed for Beginners Group and a specific FF staffer's individual account, whose sole purpose is to interact, welcome, and share -- for the purpose of demonstrating the process and modeling the etiquette of the FF community.
- tollie williams
I was thinking that they could analyse the first few posts that someone imports, to try and match people, but that'd be useless if the new user still hasn't imported anything. Still, forwarding them to FriendFeed Feedback or some sort of "Welcome Room" would be a good idea.
- Tyson Key
I think new users ought to be subscribed by default to FF-News, FF-Feedback, a specific Welcome to FF! group (DIY self-help), and that's about it. The last group should have a periodic, perhaps every other day repost of "what to do after you've read this" suggestions, with previous instances of it deleted by some internal script after each new one has been posted. I like you're idea about a 'Welcome' group and should be given the option to sub to the News and Feedback group. The blog should be highlighted too though.

Hmm, when the user opts to create their account using another service, why not give them the chance to import their feed(s) from it at the same time? I don't see why it shouldn't be possible with Facebook or Twitter, and it gives something to start with.
- Tyson Key
(After all, FriendFeed already have their credentials to perform the initial account creation)
- Tyson Key
From someone who's just started using Friendfeed recently, I recommend giving users both the options. Some users would not like to be overwhelmed with groups, while others would like to get going straight into the action. I think there are a lot of users who migrate (upgrade?) from Twitter, for whom the concept of users is familiar unlike groups. For others migrating from FB or other networks, groups may be preferable.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
yes, if those user recommendations can be based on something meaningful, such as popularity among imported friends

I started with XMBC and thought I loved it but there were quite a few quirks that I really was getting tired of. Most of those quirks seem to go away with Boxee. Also, the scripts/apps in Boxee actually work! I have had much trouble with the apps and scripts in XBMC. One thing I wish Boxee did that XBMC does is allow settings on how it updates the library. Boxee seems to think you shouldn't have anything to do with that process. plus for Boxee is the social element, which is basically optional.
- Josh Haley
hmmm I have an old out of date version of xbmc on my xbox, I might have to look into Boxee
- MikeDeal / ZoneDancer
Well, if I had to choose, I'd probably have to come clean and admit that I have no idea what either of these things are, and therefore no idea which would be better for you. Using 3 year old child logic, the choice is simple - Boxee. It's really fun and easy to say. So go with the Boxee. Yay! Boxee! Hooray Boxee! Hooray Beer!
- Morgan Haley
You will please to excuse my brother. I have not had a chance to show him the new htpc yet.
- Josh Haley
And please excuse MY brother for assuming that I know what htpc is. My techie knowledge is actually quite minimal. Did you guys know that they keep updating things like programs and devices? I have stuff that I still need to learn how to use, and it's considered obsolete already. But I'll try to catch up with the masses eventually. This weekend I'm going to set up my new TRS-80 and try to write a chess game program. The maybe play some PONG. Yeah baby. R2-D2 ain't got nothing on me!
- Morgan Haley
OK, start over... Anyone want to weigh in on this?
- Josh Haley
I like Boxee because it seems to be gaining support from the industry and has some money behind it, unlike XBMC which is a "hacker project" these days.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
I didn't realize it was actually funded. That does help a bit, huh.
- Josh Haley
Honestly, I wasn't aware of XBMC until after I used Boxee. On my end, the social aspect keeps it ahead.
- Christopher Harley
I prefer Boxee too. I gave XBMC a try for a few hours but didn't enjoy the interface very much. I think Boxee does the right things most of the time.
- Juan Pablo González
i gave xbmc more than just a few hours. I used it even with the fancy Aeon interface for months and still, Boxee can do more. Don't get me wrong, the Aeon xbmc is quite amazing in how it looks butbin the end, functionality is the main thing for me. I don't think Boxee is especially "pretty" but it does flow rather well. Using on windows 7, btw.
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
Been using XBMC for years (both on Xbox and PC). Haven't used Boxee because wasn't available for Windows until recently. Just signed up and plan on trying it out though.
- Matt
I'm curious (and maybe I should go and try Boxee finally), but what is great about it, besides social features? I don't really care about social features for my media... I agree with Josh, I wish the scripts for XBMC were better organized and maintained. As for it being a "hacker" project, maybe so, but it is also one of the most well-organized open source projects out there.
- Tim Hoeck
Tim, forget about the social side, as it is not intrusive at all. Try it for the excellent scripting organization and usability. They almost all work, which is the opposite of what I am used to on xbmc and manual installs, etc. It's definitely worth a shot. You just have to give it time to create the library, maybe overnight, once you set up your media folders. I wish it showed a status on that but it does indeed do well with scraping, art, info, etc. let me know if you like it Tim.
- Josh Haley
Boxee. There's only 1 reason behind this decision, even though I haven't used it: HD video. The only reason why I say this is because I use XBMC on my Xbox, and it can't handle HD video at all.
- Matthew Horton
Right there with you Matt. I retired my Xbox running XBMC when I got my HDTV. It just couldn't handle the video.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
I like them both from a concept perspective but neither of them are exactly what I want. Maybe I'm old school but I like the interface design of a TiVo menu or even Miro. I want the ability to know about every online video service but my main focus should be shows that I know I enjoy and to know that new episodes are there. I also prefer whenever possible to pre-download those flags series to prevent network congestion while viewing.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I use both. Xbmc on my xbox for one room and Boxee on a computer in another room. I prefer boxee for streaming/browsing online content, but use miro to pre-download content that I always watch. Then I stream the downloaded shows to the other room w/xmbc.
- Chris Goulart
media library and podcast RSS playback are important features, which work pretty well in boxee

Phil - Actually, during the early part of the last century (during that huge wave of immigration from Eastern Europe), there were many "Americanization" programs aimed at those immigrant groups. Many were run by local civics groups and libraries, and some visited job sites to offer English instruction. The fear of immigrants ran high during that period, something eugenicists took advantage of.

One minute they are all in Friendfeed professing their love for it and the next they are moving over to Google Reader just because they may not agree with the future direction of the other site. I have always been more of a Reader person than a Friendfeed person. I don’t know why but I feel more comfortable with Reader. Maybe it’s because it is tightly integrated with Gmail so I can email things to myself, maybe it’s because Reader has a really nice user interface so I can whiz about from post to post. I can’t pin it down but Reader has always been my preferred app. Say what you like about Google but they always instinctively seem to know what is good for the general net user and what works / doesn’t work. As a result, they have built an app which is primed to benefit from any disgruntled Friendfeed users if Facebook messes too much with it."

"Yet, a quick search of Flickr found the following: Why wasn't Flickr or Time concerned with copyright issues involving these parodies? It's clearly NOT a TIME cover. Simple. These lawsuits are about misidentification and/or association of the brand name in question. - Roberto Bonini

Roberto, that Time cover with that dog Andy, very much could be real, looks pretty damn official to me.
- Thomas Hawk
More seriously Roberto, there are many Time Magazine coves on Flickr that could be taken as real and would provide a possible misidentification of the Time Brand. Here's one that's up right now critical of President Bush: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Thomas Hawk
With no headlines???? Nothing remotely newsworthy on the cover either??? Time is known for thier covers. And thier covers + the TIME logo hence define the magazine. Ergo. This cannot be a TIME cover becuase it bears none of the hallmarks of a TIME issue. The Obama one, in stark contrast could easily be mistaken for a real TIME cover. Hence it reflects badly on TIME magazine, seemingly putting it squarely on the side of Obama-haters, birthers and the like.

I don't know Roberto, Shirley's photo that i linked above looks pretty official. There are others too.
- Thomas Hawk
The thing is that you are right. There have been others. Taking a portrait and paroding TIME is not new. If I had to choose, I'd avoid the multi million or even billion $$ law suit which Flickr are justifiably concerned about in such a charged atmosphere. There is a fine line between expressing your views and asking for trouble... Personally I would never have posted that, like it or...

Roberto, maybe, but I doubt it seriously. Only one actual attorney that I'm aware of has chimed in on this yet and thier opinion was that the image in question was fair use. Another law student chimed in with that same conclusion. It is *very* difficult to pursue almost any charge of copyright infringement when it comes to political satire, parody and criticism. To the best of my...

I'm not saying it wasn't fair use. Of course it was. I'm saying that Flickr either heard from TIME or had reason to belive they'd be hearing from them about it. The question here is does ANY site where user generated content appears have the right to protect themselves from litigation??? Flickr lawyers + yahoo lawyers = Ultra conservative, aim for zero risk company.

"The picture, distributed through Flickr and virally, through hard copy printouts pasted on lamp posts in Los Angeles, was pulled down by Flickr on account of possible copyright infringement (since the substrate image reproduces an original Time Magazine cover). However, as noted photographer Thomas Hawk, who among other things is also voting democrat, puts it, this looks like censorship: “Personally, I think it’s unfortunate that Flickr would embark upon yet another act of censorship when an image was so clearly parody and fair use. What bothers me even more is that this is still another example of Flickr censoring users who are critical of President Obama and his policies. In June Flickr deleted the entire account and photostream of Flickr user Shepherd Johnson after he posted comments critical of the President on the Official White House Photostream. Now I’m actually a Democrat who voted for President Obama and am super happy to see the President using Flickr. But while Flickr’s...

I've had three RRODs on the same Xbox. So far.
- Leo Laporte
Do they normally send you back the same box? Or just refurbs?
- Paul Grav
Of course your NES still works. You can't compare 1980s console hardware to stuff made today.
- Alex Knight
Consoles of today run multi core CPUs with massive hard drives that have many moving parts. Failure rate is going to be far greater.
- Alex Knight
No RROD for me and I've had mine since day 1. Lucky me, I guess ;-)
- Steve Lacey
Paul, mine went a few weeks ago. I bought it from a friend and he was never able to find the receipt for it. I've been told that the warrenty has been changed in such a way that they don't even ask for one anymore. Is this true? I hope so!

Hasn't Microsoft officially addressed these failures in the latest revision of the XBOX hardware?
- Alex Knight
One day when SSD capacity and pricing comes down, I can see consoles using them.
- Alex Knight
The problem with the XBox isn't the hard disk, it's a poorly designed clamp that can't take the heat generated by the console. It's a design flaw. Also, consoles already use solid-state drives of a sort. The Wii has 512 MB of NAND, and there's no reason you can't put an SSD in your PS3 (any 2.5" drive will work). The PSP uses NAND by way of MemoryStick Duos, and the DS now takes SD/SDHC...

I had one RROD (initial batch), but no problems since then with either of current Xboxes (Premium and Elite).

I wonder if you can swap out the current Xbox hdd with SSD. It uses a SATA controller doesn't it?
- Alex Knight
I am on my ***FIFTH*** 360 in just over three years. To Microsoft's credit, they have replaced each one at no cost to me and the process has been quick and painless every time. Of course they have replaced so many, they should have it down pat by now. To answer Paul's question, they send you back a refurb box, not the same one you sent in.
- Todd Walker
So could that mean I'd get one with a newer chipset. One that's supposedly less prone to failure?
- Paul Grav
Its that time again - I want friend recommendations! I don't care if they're popular or any if that as long as they're interesting and actually use FF! Go forth!
I'm looking at you,Tina! There must be some of those 1800 folks that you think would make beautiful Internet music with me :)

Well, I like your expression. I'll be your friend. :)
- Ayşe E.
A suggestion or two: 1) Take a look at those I subscribe to. 2) If you don't already follow them, then subscribe. (A related request to those I follow on FF: Please follow me!) :) BTW, I hope you find my feed interesting. ;)
- Dennis Jernberg
Telling me to look at your list of subscriptions isn't the correct answer as it effectively transfers the laziness from me to you and that's not the goal here! Give me names or send them to me using the "Recommend Friends" link! I beg of you!

"The unemployment rate in the U.S. was still 9.4 percent in July, but some cities are better than others to look for a job. Of the top 50 metro areas, Washington, D.C., is the easiest for unemployed workers to find a job, while Detroit is the hardest, according to a new Job Market Competition index put together by job search engine Indeed. The index ranks cities based on how many unemployed people there are compared to job listings."

I thought Austin was in slightly better shape than that. Also, I wonder if those D.C. numbers reflect D.C. residents only, or D.C. AREA folks who are unemployed. Thinking maybe there's something up with that...
- Call me Bronco
To be fair, it does say "metropolitan area" in the fine print. I'm just wary of statistics until I drill down to the raw data and check out who conducted the research, etc., etc.

I can feel why DC is on the top, but what could be the reason for Jacksonville?
- Mahmood Padura
Not many tech or manufacturing jobs in Jacksonville, mostly service sector jobs, which probably have not been hit as hard.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Jacksonville is a deep water Atlantic port that can still expand and a growing force for logistics & distribution for imports/exports. It doesn't have the delays/congestion found in Miami, for example. Jax produces building materials for the US and abroad. It's the third largest military town in the country and the city has substantial medical facilities & med research. Combine those assets with a ridiculously low cost of living, temperate weather and zero income tax....
- Kevin Donahue
Don't do it. First you adopt a sheep, then you end up taking the "what literary period are you" quiz and spamming your results to Akiva. Again.
- Sparky
Oh, I've already done that. And the quiz got it wrong.
- joey
YAY, welcome, Mr. Sheep, you have a new family.
- Liza
At least it is Facebook and not a real sheep or it would be all 'BAAAAAAAAH' up in here. Wait, maybe that's what happened to Rochelle.
- joey
Last month there were rental sheep in the area and I'd bike by them and BAAAAAAAAAAA back at them. Also, I work with a kiwi, and they just make sheep-sex jokes. If we were playing word-association games, I think I'd say "VELCRO GLOVE" if you said "SHEEP"
- Wirehead
Well, it turns out that it's cheaper and more environmentally sound than lawn mowers and herbicides. Too much brush = fire hazard during the summertime, so you need to clear it out. But you don't need to do it regularly, because it won't grow all summer without the rain. The sheep eat the grass and the goats eat just about anything, but really seem to love nasty invasive species.
- Wirehead
My brother tried to get me to adopt a lost cow. I didn't. In fact, I refuse to play Farm Town. Or Mafia Wars. It'd take up all the time I'd otherwise spend on Twitter and FriendFeed. ;)
- Dennis Jernberg
I got a Cute Kitten today and Facebook tried to guilt me into sending something back OR YOUR FRIEND WILL THINK YOU DON'T LIKE THEM.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I actually refused a "relative request" from my mother a while back. I felt like a bad daughter.
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
That actually might be better than a sheep trying to get you to adopt a brother.
