what do you like better about feedly then friendfeed or others? just curious. I'm trying to cut back, not add more tools, great s they might be. i'm exploding!
- washwords
Can I like this 3x. Thanks for a GREAT recommendation, Bwana. My new fave Firefox extension.
- Leo Laporte
Wow, even the screensaver function is cool...I might be leaning to feedly and away from greader...
- Anthony Farrior
Revisited based on a few 'endorsements' here on FF. Wow. Easy, fast, just cool.
- Charlie Anzman
What are the implications of "no thanks"? Same as "Mark as read"?
- Andrew Smith
@cecily if you get a chance, go to the feedly dashboard (through dashboard link at the top right of the screen) and click on the star next to the sources you like the most and see if the what's new page looks any better. The other option is to click on the "cover" icon on the top left on the nav bar and see if that view is more diggestable. If you have specific ideas on how to make the interface more appealing let us know!
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@andrew no thanks = mark the article as read + let the feedly recommendation engine know that you did not like this recommendation. This metadata is then used with other criteria to unfluence future recommendations.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
I installed and uninstalled all in 1 minute.
- Aaron Myers
Erhan, thanks :) I need to learn how to utilize it properly before I screencast it...it's coming soon though, I love this thing
- Bwana ☠
Looks promising, but I'm always suspicious of extensions that don't come from Mozilla addons site...
- João Almeida
What do you guys say to the folks who say Feedly crapped all over their Google Reader (adding feeds to it)?
- David Risley
It's in this thread David: http://friendfeed.com/e... We asked for a bigger warning since the one there is easily missed, the Feedly guys chime in as to why they did it that way. It doesn't "crap" all over your feed, it does create new folders, but they are easily removed. They are working on an undo procedure as well.
- Bwana ☠
I'm really liking Feedly as well. We'll see how it goes
- Shey
iGoogle has been my home page for well over a year and what I have found is that via widgets its generally there for me to either click on gmail or to go into google reader - the other widgets are generally worth an odd glance but thats about it - I've put feedly as my home page and will see how this works out - but first impressions is a clean easy to use interface even if you have a few hundred feeds to juggle..
- Jican
Feedly is awesome: I had a few hiccups after installation, but I re-installed, and it has been a real help in 2 ways: 1) motivated me to clean up my feeds and sort them into a major category 2)motivates me daily to actually skim through and read the content that is closest to my current interests. well done!
- Terri MacMillan
Not dissing Feedly, but didn't experience anything that made me want to give up Google Reader when I tried Feedly a few months ago. Anyone care to explain why I should try again?
- Chris Stevenson
I don't work for them, so I don't see a reason to convince you. Some people like it, some don't.
- Fleagle
Hi Chris: feedly tries to provide a magazine like summary of your google reader. Some users only care about productivity and find the magazine like interface a step backward. Some users like it and use it in concert with their google reader. Some people prefer using the magazine like interface only.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
We've been acquired by Facebook! We are really excited about joining the Facebook team. (Note: FriendFeed will continue to operate - see the blog post for details)
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We're still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team." Those are NOT encouraging things to read as a FF user.
- S of 2C
Sniff... not sure if I'm excited about this. But I have enormous respect for the FriendFeed team... so, I assume they believe in the move as more than an exit strategy.
- Michael Leggett
Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes!
- Ben Hanten
Who would have thought that after Facebook were shamelessly being "inspired" by FriendFeed, the inevitable would have happened?
- Tyson Key
Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make.
- Hector
yes you have just failed at failing, no it is not a double negative.
- Bahriye
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward.
- Harry Wolff
Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>(
- Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again.

Bravo Bret! Been following your successes ever since we had the opportunity to work together on the YellowPages.ca / Google Maps Canada deal. Congrats!

It could have been Microsoft, which would have been worse for everyone. :(
- Tyson Key

- Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger.
- Joe The Sausage
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck.
- Joey Gibson
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them.
- Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/
- Tyson Key
I will reserve judgement, i don't like or use FB but if FF maintains it's current goodness i don't care who cuts the checks.
- SteVe C
I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though.
- Jay 'Farmington'
@Philipp: until the new masters start flexing their muscles and bringing in their own people to enforce their own vision.
- Joe The Sausage
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL
- berchman
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.
- dgw
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;)
- Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?"
- Brian Bommarito
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin?
- Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........
- Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.
- Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this...
- Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now.
- Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team!
- Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me.
- Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us
- Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting.
- Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed...
- Tyson Key

- Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see...
- Daniel Morgan
I don't know, Like it? or dislike it?
- Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether?
- Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step!
- Robin Barooah
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users.
- Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends...
- CannonGod
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on.
- Akiva
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- zio bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.
- Vicarbott
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything.
- zio bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future.
- Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?
- paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though.
- JCunwired
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching....
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Just great. I'm certainly not very happy about this. Let's just hope FB doesn't ruin FF. Ugh.
- axolote
Who cares? Nothing's gonna change in our pitiful lifes.
- bluretina
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.
- Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties?
- Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team
- Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.
- tollie williams
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.
- Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends!
- Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother.
- Don Faulkner

I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good.
- Ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr...
- Kemal Y.
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.
- Ken Sheppardson
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?
- Flavio
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.
- Andy Bakun
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

Please say that facebook.com will be shutting down, and the combined company will still be called FriendFeed... I bet it won't happen, though.

"Regarding FB/FF - Here's how it's [probably] going to work. Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Paired with your team's excellence in realizing features that succeed in pleasing the geekiest of Web 2.0 affine individuals, I think you are steering towards exciting waters :)

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. cacarr: updates for FB have progressed rapidly in the past, count how many months since new features such as api calls and site redesigns have have been implemented
- Mike Chelen

Congratulation to the FF team! You guys deserves this. I just hope that Facebook does not change the directions of FF.
- Vinko
I hope this means better integration: liking here will auto-like on fb and such :D if that's the case, I won't mind the ads *wink* *wink*
- Friendfeed's Francisco
Franc, cant stand facebook ads in their current format, hope they will be fixed eventually :P

Grats, dont spend it all in one place.....
- Robert Higgins
congrads. I think it will be good for BOTH companies.
- Logan Lindquist
Congratulations to all the FriendFeed team. I hope you'll be able to keep the FriendFeed spirit up at Facebook. Kudos for all the great work you've been doing.
- Paul Papadimitriou
I use FriendFeed and Facebook so it would be awesome to see FF features in Facebook. Congratulations!
- krzychukula
from IM
judging by the nearly 600 comments as i type this, including my own earlier one, FF could use a Don't Like button as well. or would, if we were going to be using it much longer.
- kelly
Nice, i like to wish you all the best for your new job (and it's really hard, i know). I'm happy, but... don't let die FF!!
- ''Ignobile''
Hope FriendFeed remains open. Love the spirit of FF
- Bernaldo Barrena
Seriously, what a coincidence! Just on Saturday I claimed to be both twitter- and facebook-free. I loved FF product and personally helped to bring at least a dozen of my friends into the community. I'll stick around for a while though.
- ✔ ǝuǝƃnǝ
This deal makes sense, now fb developers do not need to figure out how ff does it because they can just ask! Congrats facebook and ff!
- Garin Kilpatrick
I suppose Facebook had to do it, with Twitter and Google Wave as competitor...
- Alexander Kruel
I am noticing a lot of people going to re-esumate their lifestream.fm account now!
- Flavio
I don't think FB acquiring FF is bad. But I don't think it's good either. We'll see. :-) In the meantime, keep up the good work!
- Alexander Gieg
How long until ex-FriendFeed employees start jumping ship from Facebook? I wonder...
- Tyson Key
Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.
- Penny Power
:( Happy for FF people, sad for the service. Was going to move from fb to ff this week..
- Martynas
Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.
- Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.
- Ru Viljoen
I don't understand why everyone is so negative about the situation?
- orionstarr
@orionstarr - it's like Starbucks buying your neighborhood coffee shop and saying it still cares about the customers. You know it's just not going to be the same as what you've come to love.
- Robin Barooah
Presumably FF will go on the back burner - and the team will try and "fix" Facebook.
- Tim Tyler
I've watched Facebook morph from a relatively organised and well implemented social networking tool into the hulking mess it is now - and I really, really hope that a similar thing doesn't happen here with the inevitable changes this will bring about.
- Leslie Moore
Come on guys, out with the long-term game plan, this is tedious.
- Andrew Eglinton
Teach Facebook how to be FriendFeed. Let the small but fast teach the big but slow. Don't forget what Paul says - don’t be evil.
- whatidiscover
Friendfeed is not as huge as Facebook but you're doing such terrible work on it. Friendfeed is facing so many many problems these days though facebook doesn't seem to have one. Why?
- Sing For Absolution
Finally I can forget to add the "beta" before typing friendfeed.com and no longer be surprised when I see an interface I'm not expecting.
- Brian Chang
I hate it. I love it! I haven't even scrolled down to the bottom yet. Hold on.......ok, it's good. :-)
- Jeff Eddings
Cheers Bret & team - it's feeling pretty good so far (which includes initial gut reaction)
- Christopher Galtenberg
Nice job. I can at the very least say it is a big improvement aesthetically. I haven't finished checking everything out yet, but so far so good.
- Rolf Schewe
I miss the ability to have a Firefox sidebar setup that just had my list of items scrolling past and nothing else along the side like this view: http://friendfeed.com/realtim...
- Justin Yost
Reshare will be back. Just an artifact of beta-testing, didn't make it in for this morning
- Bret Taylor
Our settings vary to prevent things shuffling around excessively. We bubble up when someone you are subscribed to comments.
- Bret Taylor
also wish i can add links/pics/embed in the "comments"...for example, i'd like to include an image of my email from http://www.emailcover.com, but it only shows up as a link
- brainno722 (Peter)
Can you open an existing conversation in a new window?
- Barak B
1st look is good, like the real time...didn't make it to the bottom the first few minutes. Also the comment box drops down as I am commenting now...message got off screen ;)
- Sanne Buurma
please add keyboard shortcut for play/pause feed
- Ouriel Ohayon
Agree with Andy, dislike the fugly grey
- Sally Church
Barak: click on the timestamp to open a conversation in a new window.
- Kevin Mohr
Barack B : you can click the time and select open in new window.
- Simon Wicks
refresh the page would move up the item which have newest comment?
- Tony
sad grey: why don't you let everyone choose the colour of the background?
- Davide Leonelli
Grey or not, rather think about what the beta has to offer in functionality
- Sanne Buurma
Please, bring back service icons near each post — it's very hard to scan information flow without them. Also hope you'll do something with new subscription module — it's unuseful while managing a lot of imaginary friends.
- Yury Vetrov
Wait, is the frequent shifting up and down of items I'm reading (i.e. the items in view) really supposed to work out well? I suppose you guys tried it for a while and you just got used to it?
- j1m
Peter, yep but thankfully the Cleaner FriendFeed GM script still works in Chrome and FFox, which does this for you.
- Kol Tregaskes
Don't like: broke my Blocks list, Block not available from Hover Menu
- Will Higgins™
Why Will Higgins have a superscript of "TM"? how typed in?
- Tony
it keeps the bad low-contrast grey on white text for comments that deters me from reading it. You made the main text bigger, now make the comment text black.
- Kevin Marks
Will: block will be back, just missing today, but it is not something we are removing (just something we didn't get in for this morning)
- Bret Taylor
I think you guys should really embrace the idea of hashtags. Let us add them to other people's posts, having various services auto-tag imported items, let us search on them using filters. Tagging is one great way for us to get a handle on the volume of information here.
- Kevin Kuphal
What's with the orange and the green on the side? Its a bit ugly if you ask me. Also, is there a way to change this, as well as make the beta permanent? (I like living on the cutting edge).
- darnell
I too like the orange and green. It's the blue I'm not sure about. :-)
- Daniel Dulitz
Yeah, but it clashes with the logo. Either Friendfeed needs to change their logo, or get rid of the colors. Or (even better) allow users to change the colors. :-)
- darnell
Looks horrible to me, I think we should have a customizable interface more like iGoogle, I like the idea though, just more customization, like sidebar customization, friend lists, realtime widget, chat widget, all movable and arrangeable, there sure is enough space etc...
- Kyle Weller
I'm with Kyle and Darnell - I like being able to customize my GMail colours, and having that feature on FF would be cool
- nouhad
Ignoring 71 previous comments... I really like the new design! One request: allow the pause button to follow my cursor as a scroll down the page!
- Chris Messina
+1 Chris Messina. That would be an awesome feature.
- Beau Liening
Add a floating "COMMENT" feature at the bottom of each thread, so I don't have to scroll up to click "comment"... this is a weird experience in new beta UI
- Susan Beebe
@Ari: This is why I really think tagging is what they need to focus on. If we could each add #ffbeta or something to our own posts as well as others, you get the trending and other features that twitter already has. Combine this with filters and you really get some killer information management features.
- Kevin Kuphal
I really like having one UI instead of different modes (normal, realtime, miniwindow), but to support the old "mini window" experience, perhaps allow the right hand side bar with filters and subscriptions to be collapsible?
- Karl Rosaen
@Karl: API is key here. Twitter isn't massively popular because their website rocks. Twitter is massively popular because there's a massive layer of applications built on top of it. Build that for FF and you have the same potential growth
- Kevin Kuphal
I wish it could use more of the screen real estate of my monitor, given my normal window size, it has large amounts of unused space on either size of the content due to the fixed layout. Maybe a multi-column mode?
- Ray Cromwell
@Krishnamoorthy rooms I believe have changed to feeds beta.friendfeed.com/[room_name]
- Lou Paglia
the new design works better for me. I am sure there will be glitches, but so far so good.
- Sharon Hurley Hall
Is there a way to change my prefs over to to the beta so I don't have to keep entering beta.friendfeed...?
- Ryan Stanley
UI suggestion: there's a link to expand all comments, there should be one to collapse them as wel.
- Ryan Stanley
UI suggestion: after expanding comments you scroll all the way to the bottom reading the thread, then you have scroll all the way back up to click the Comment link. Why not have it at the bottom of the thread too.
- Ryan Stanley
Feature suggestion: FF needs a built-in way of referring to people publicly, just like Twitter's @. Perhaps use the same convention. But there needs to be a way people to address each other in public threads, so a user can make sure to be informed when people are talking or referring to them.
- Ryan Stanley
going to read through faq - roadmap of what made beta & what's going away would be nice - big concern for me is the lose of ability to expand lists to see individual participants - i find that one of ff's strongest features - that and block but i see from earlier in this thread that its will make it in later in beta (whew)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
A Pause button that follows you on page scroll could be more distracting than it's worth. But how about something like it appears upon a white space mousedown/mouseup event.
- Micah
Hmm, I tried to read this thread, but I never got to the bottom, because the unexpected shifts of the text just became too much after a while. Fundamentally, if the page keeps shifting up and down unexpectedly, it's hard to see how anyone's ever going to read it -- hence the many requests for a floating pause button, which would help. You could also imagine pause on hover. Being able to read down the page without having the text disappear seems to me like the #1 use case of ff.
- j1m
Of course, it's not really like you want Pause -- the real-time updates are great when they're below wherever the eyes are :-)
- j1m
Bret - Great job! There are certainly things to clean up before this interface goes to the main page. Rooms should REALLY be on the subscribed list on the right hand column. I would LOVE to be able to put Blank Lines in comments. I don't care if they count for a whole lines worth of characters (as opposed to a more common one character for the cr/lf) Blank lines make comments more legible and clear than just a runtogether paragraph.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I don't like how the interface STILL loses my place if I subscribe to someone while posting a comment (or even reading it!) I should be able to subscribe to YOU while I read YOU and not lose my page place. The Page should need to be refreshed to reset everyone because of the new subscription.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I don't know about the queued items, I like the real time feed, having selectable speeds instead of "over-caffination required mode" would be good. Most discussions this is irrelevant, but the discussion on tis new beta this morning (i.e. on scoble's feed) showed how insane that can be.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The real-time-only feed in the beta is causing Safari 4b on my MacBook use up a lot of CPU cycles, hence depleting the battery faster. I'm sure FF3 will too. Please consider an "ECO Mode" similar to the current standard mode, which only refreshes once every few minutes, for those running their machines on battery power. Without such an eco-mode, and with the rapid-fire pace of live updates, I fear that I won't be using FFeed much at all. Certainly not leaving that tab open for hours on end like I used to.
- Siddharth Deb
I don't know if I've done something, or you guys did, but when I look here, I only have a few services setup in the account, when I go to the old interface I have a LOT more -I'm not certain that everything is feeding through? (i.e. I have Digg and Disqus set up, I see the correct list of icons on the old interface, but on the beta "settings" popup, No Dice. Even if this is irrelevant to the actual data flow, please fix this to make me sleep well at night. ;)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
One more thing - Could we have a character counter in the comments? It would be REALLY nice, if my account is setup to post this comment to my twitter account, and it's going to post the link to this discussion, please Add the number of characters in the link (plus a space) to the total character count. That way I won't be truncating the comment and/or the URL when it gets to twitter.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Another thing: I used to be able to click the "More" next to a single discussion, and "Link to this discussion" Where is that? If this is an outmoded way of thinking please let me know. Otherwise, um...can we have that feature back?
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob: the timestamp ("9 hours ago") is the permalink
- Benjamin Golub
do you need a techno dunce to help the average joe make sense of this?? haha...i love it...
- Lauren Shanahan
Very twitter like. But better due to nice conversational.
- xia
I actually kinda like the grey... though it does look like it's an opportunity to let companies brand the background in some way.
- Frankie Warren
For cc to Twitter functionality, can the number of characters be a count-down instead of a count-up?
- Winston Teo
I'd like to second the notion that there should be a way to address an individual within a thread...the agreed upon "Rob:" works great, but maybe could be clickable so that there's no confusion as to which Rob or which Scoble you're talking to ;) (i.e. maybe a CTRL-Click or something on the person's name after their comment to start a new comment with their name at the beginning? )
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The grey background looks kinda dullish, and it looks like someone ran out of ideas for colours..
- Winston Teo
IMO avatars occupy way too much real estate now, I liked the smaller ones better.
- ✔ ǝuǝƃnǝ
thsi is nothing on the new design, but after being on here all night with no attention to a down twitter, I am reminded of this: It would be nice if I could set the post to twitter for comments and likes a) permanent b) off or C) on a per comment/like basis -twitter users say this "yeah, when ppl I follow flood me with FF spam ... I usually unfollow ... even block if it irritates me enough." And I would like to be able to be easily selective of what gets put through, and it would get more GOOD attn for FF
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
please, for the love of god, move the "comment" link to the BOTTOM of the list of comments. seriously, am I the only one who can't believe this hasn't been fixed for so long?
- Dossy Shiobara
Great stuff! :-) FriendFeed does it better than Facebook. Please go real-time all the way for subscription requests and confirmatoions too.
- Nenad Nikolic
from twhirl
I dont like nofollows on friendfeed and links are moved to urls very bad :(

It's not bad, but I prefer the smoothness of the old one to the lines and edges in this new one.
- scott willeke
I love the new letter-counting post widget in the beta though.

This thing came out of left field. I hadn't seen or heard about it until now. Love how fast we're moving lately. Woo hoo!
- Michael Leggett
I found out about it when I was looking thru the code and saw an experiment with a useful sounding name. We'd talked about adding something like this a while ago -- thank you to Jeremie for just doing it :)
- Keith Coleman
I love these Gmail Labs addons, but I really wish non-Googlers could write them. :)
- Ray Cromwell
The Gmail platform, when it arrives, is going to be amazing :)
- Ashwin Bharambe
Who was it that said all software expands until it supports email?
- Amit Patel
But now it's "until it supports Google Maps"

@amit, Jamie Zawinsky, but he didn't say anything about email supporting word processing

"We just heard that Howard/Baines will be releasing an Adobe AIR application for FriendFeed in the next week or so. So far all we have is the screen shot and a confirmation from Baines that his team is working on it. The application will be called Alert Thingy." I like the name :)
- Bret Taylor
Now if someone could just combine a FF / Twitter Adobe AIR app -- making sure that tweets weren't duplicated -- that'd be super! Otherwise, it's annoying to feel compelled to run both (and no, I cannot convince all my friends on Twitter to sign up for FF, nor do I feel like creating Imaginary Friends for all of them).
- Adam Lasnik
Thing is, I love the simple web-based FF interface. Too slick to make the switch. FF + Fluid + Fluid plug-ins = winner
- Aviv
I don't feel the need to abandon the FF interface. In fact, I see myself doing other activities from within FF - http://ffapps.com/tabs/
- Aviv
Can't wait for this! It's going to be awesome.
- Brandon Titus
Its about frackin' time. What took so long? :)
- Tony Hung
Yes! My continuous partial attention does a little jig!
- Ashton
@Noah: Better than twhirl? I've never had issues with it.
- dgw
Twirl has not has issues, it just happens to rely on the twitter api being up, which is the unreliable part. As long as the FF API can keep up with demand an Adobe Air app that works as good as twirl would be sweet.
- Christian Burns
THX 4 invitatiojn- guess my computerallergy holds me away from all this kind of internet friendship thing. Somehow too much letters...u know what I mean? Maybe it takes some time to come into that stuff. Virtual??? Prefer real air, trees and touch...talk soon NOAH.
- Natascha Engelmann
@possible248 labs.adobe.com/downloads/air_linux.html btw ive been running adobe air through wine for over a month here is how you install it with wine www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2008/03/howto-adobe-air-and-xdrive-desktop-lite.html
- Kyle Weller
@defcon: I'll bet he'll like that link. I pointed it out over Twitter, but you never know; twhirl supposedly has some issues on Linux platforms that aren't fixed yet. Wine might take care of the problems. And BTW, links are automatically, er, linked if you start them off with http://
- dgw
@Slippy: I used to think that about Twitter, until I discovered twhirl... But don't let me influence your decision. ;-)
- dgw
@Jeremy: Sweet program! At least, the looks are good and it appears to have all the functionality of the site. I won't pry for a release date. :-)
- dgw
Just got drag and drop image uploading on share... getting real close!! (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
You coders just constantly amaze me with your ability to whip this stuff up!
- Phil Ashman
can't wait to see the final product - you don't need some more beta testers by any chance, Jeremy? :)
- Frederic
@Frederic: I considered asking, but figured the answer was obvious. @Jeremy: So, do you? :D
- dgw
Those lucky enough to be at the adobe AIR Tour - London yesterday would have seen a demo of the app plus a demo of a couple of bugs we need to fix :). The launch is currently being held up by thawte who we are waiting on to issue our digital certificate! Once that is done we are good to go. Thanks for all the offers, we have enough beta testers on windows and mac for now, but would be interested in anyone running AIR on linux! (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
...and if you want to follow me and the kinds of apps we build then please subscribe to me or follow me on twitter (jeremybaines) (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
@Jeremy: Will all comments posted via Alert Thingy have that tagline? Oh, and I believe @possible248 on Twitter (and here) is running AIR on Linux.
- dgw
@Voyagerfan5761 yes they will. We think it's ok to ask for a bit of PR if we are giving you an app free. What do you think? It would be nice if there was a proper place to put the "via...." link, like on twitter, but the guys at FriendFeed have not provided anything like that for us yet! Bret.. are you listening??? (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
I would prefer to have the "via Alert Thingy"-tagline independent from the comment itself. I second that request.
- sebmos
Ok that is 2 of us - Is that enough to change the API Bret? How many votes do I need? :)
- Jeremy Baines
Of course, some of us might feel that reading a few words of advertising along with each comment is, you know, not exciting.
- j1m
Adding the source to entries and comments from the API makes a lot of sense. I will think about it and take a look at what Twitter does, and come back with something.
- Bret Taylor
@Jeremy - would be happy to try it out on Linux :)
- Frederic
I seriously seriously want this! but agree w/Adam - combo app would ROCK
- Sarah Perez
Regarding the attribution for comments, how about adding a conditional "from %APPNAME%" tag wrapped in <small> tags after the name? It would be displayed only if there was a valid source for that comment. Thumbs-up? -down?
- dgw
Just installed! Could do with customizable opacity, but otherwise it's just figuring out how to use it right now. w00t! (And making Enter save the comment...) (via Alert Thingy)
- dgw
Is there a central location for feedback/suggestions? (via Alert Thingy)
- Bwana ☠
you can send us email - help@alertthingy.com (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
Yeah, seriously way too transparent with no settings control. Other than that looks great.
- Marston Alfred
We hear you on the opacity thing. Good point about scroling up when writing a comment (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
Anybody for marking items as seen, a la twhirl? It seems that would be useful for keeping one's place.
- dgw
tried it out; seems just like a web browser... NEEEEDS functionality for me to re-consider using it
- The Product Guy
It is cool. But: turned off sounds and they are back. Window scales, but not the text size. very small! oh, and while I was writing a comment in a tiny box an update came in and my comment so far just vanished... (via Alert Thingy)
- Alex von Halem
@ Alex von Halem thanks I have added those to my list :) (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
@Jeremy Baines thanx. restarting stopped the sounds (perhaps just a note, that saving settings is not enough). Liking it more and more. Just a wee thing: when you hit the "comment" button: shouldn't your cursor start flashing in that field instead of having to click into it as well? Keep it up, it's going to be a winner! (via Alert Thingy)
- Alex von Halem
Also good! they make the list ;) - not actually sure when we will have time to finish everything on the list! but nice to have one so we know what needs doing ;) (via Alert Thingy)
- Jeremy Baines
Just installed it. I don't like it (alert thingy)... much prefer the FF interface. But kudos to you on the "remote key" -- solid idea.
- Michael Leggett
I don't think it hides the entries set to be hidden on FF. Anyone else can confirm this?
- Turker Keskinpala
@Turker: I wrote about that this morning, so yeah, I can confirm. It's still showing my hidden stuff as I type this. I think the fault lies with the FriendFeed API, though. So far as I know, there's no indication of hiding status available.
- dgw
Turkey and Voyagerfan5761: I will work on this today. We are not passing the "hidden" bit through to the API properly.
- Bret Taylor
@Bret - can you look at the hide issue.. we are getting the hidden stuff showing in the API
- Jeremy Baines
Thanks Bret. FF web interface is so fast and usable that it is not easy to switch to a desktop application. Nevertheless, good work Jeremy Baines.
- Turker Keskinpala
It really is a nice piece of work, but I find the whole dark/translucent thing too hard to read. I also miss the collapsing of long comment threads (like this one). In fact, I didn't realize how nice a feature that was until I didn't have it and had to scroll and scroll to get to a new comment.
- Chris Johnson
Can someone explain to me, in 42 words or less, why an app like this is better than just accessing FF over the web? Color me seriously confused. I'd try it myself, but I get an error anytime I try to download it (and yes, I have Air installed).
- Adam Lasnik
@Adam Lasnik - Firefox can't handle a lot of tabs (non beta) and I'd rather use Alert Thingy or bTittleTattle then leave FriendFeed open in Firefox. (via Alert Thingy)
- Corvida
@corvida ahh but, FF3 beta is solid and handles a wealth of tabs with great aplomb. :) I've got my eye on AT, but for now it taketh more functionality than it giveth. I suspect with all this attention, though, it will soon giveth a lot more!
- felix
Corvida, or you could do what I do when I want to keep one or two tabs open persistently and easy-to-switch-to (e.g., Pandora): open them in Internet Exploder. What I was hoping to hear was that this Air app offered intriguing / helpful "extras" that one doesn't innately get in the web version. For instance, I use Twhirl because it aurally alerts me to direct messages AND displays all messages to me in chron order on one scrolling page -- something not offered on the Twitter web page.
- Adam Lasnik
@Felix I FF Betas crash on me way more than FF2 and that's more important to me. @Lasnik I don't have IE installed =P Don't want to keep 2 browsers open anways, it's defeating the point in a way. I'm still wasting resources, though I think Alert Thingy is less of a waste.
- Corvida
Okay, just tried it on another computer. Not for me. I find it much harder to read/scan stuff on it vs. the web page.
- Adam Lasnik

- John Spencer
I moved onto alerthingy from friend feed, stricly based on aesthetics. ...via AlertThingy
- Osize Om
That's a good point. I'd say that I left Facebook lately much in the same way that LinkedIn and MySpace drove me away -- it just wasn't giving me any relevant and current information that I cared about. Having an activity stream of your friends is a little more like actually keeping up with them.
- Justin Ward
I think the Facebook newsfeed just fails to tell me anything relevant. Letting me know that someone updated their profile picture is useless to me. That said, I think one of the biggest draws of Friendfeed is that the conversation is happening here. I never used to comment on blogs because I would forget to come back and see if anyone replied. Friendfeed does a great job of updating me on conversations in which I participated.
- Christopher Sacca
@sacca i agree that the discussion on friendfeed is great and its even better that i can send to back to twitter where the dick started this
- Fred Wilson
Would be great to add all this in blogs, don't you think?

Fred- The Twitter use case you cite above though doesn't appeal to me. As much as I want to have a conversation with my friends on Twitter, the experience breaks down. Replies often don't make sense because recipients have different notification settings. Also, conversations don't end up in one place and require clicking to separate pages to get the proper context. If I were to create a 140 char version of this comment right now and send it back to Twitter readers of my page would have to work to catch up.

I still use facebook so that I have my address book codified somewhere, but FriendFeed has killed any interest FB's newsfeed

DavidAlvarez, see http://disqus.com. (On that url, why do i always see and think “disgust”? Does this happen to anyone else?)

When I talked to Bret today he mentioned that they want to see what outside developers will do with the API - I don't think FF will develop its own desktop apps
- Frederic
I fully expect Adobe Air apps to come out of these APIs, and all kinds of crazy widgets.
- Adam Posey
+1 for wanting a FF AIR app that can just hang out on my desktop and keep me up-to-date.
- Charles Hudson
Unlike Twitter, which has very simple text messages, FF has rich messages with photos, videos, links, comments, etc. You'd have to replicate large parts of a browser to make a standalone app. So maybe Mozilla Prism is the way to go.

Founders will soon be household names at current growth rate. Scoble is everywhere (in the forefront of developing tech news).

Paul's going to take finding friends next, so that leaves me with search :)

btw, where is my dual homing t-shirt :)

On my desk :) Pick a day next week (other than Wednesday), I'll stop by the FF HQ sometime after lunch.

I'm too security-conscious to import my address-book except by exporting it first. In other feature-request news, shouldn't ff also coordinate my gaggle of status messages: e.g. having a status that gets updated whenever I update my twitter or gmail status.

search now live! (done by Jim and Bret) :)
- Sanjeev Singh
Done by Jim actually. I did the HTML, doesn't count :)
- Bret Taylor
Sweet! You guys should add an RSS Icon with the URL for the feed at the end of all search result pages. This is great.
- Mark Krynsky
How on earth is the FF search so fast ! These little details make FF totally usable.
- Zoltan Szendro
There's no reason for search to be slow, in any app. Are you listening, gmail developers??
- Amit Patel
You can always make search fast as long as you're willing to give up on things like freshness or relevance or latency. That's not a trade-off that most users really don't want to make.
- Adewale Oshineye
Gmail ranks by date, which inherently makes the problem much easier since your posting lists and results have the same ordering. I agree with Amit :)
- Bret Taylor
The best thing is you people have done very good subtle things in UI. Which time and again makes me say 'Wow'. You are almost there now.

"Yesterday we were linked from the Yahoo home page as well, for this story by Duncan Riley on Japanese ISPs blocking file sharers (see image above, click for larger view of how the links look). The link went live at 5:45 PM PST as one of the bottom four links in the news box (these send less traffic) and was up through the day. Despite the fact that yesterday was a Saturday (slowest traffic day of the week) and that it was up only 1/4 of the day, we had our highest traffic day ever and over 1,000 comments were left on the post."
